Like all of the bachelorettes have curly/wavy hair so i kinda get straightening one of theirs..but Maru?? Not my first choice for straightened hair lmao. Maybe she’s the only one who looked right with it??
I think someone else could’ve been the straight hair one, the thing is, Maru is mixed, so it would’ve made sense to make the mixed character have curly hair.
I think Abigail could pull off straight hair. It might take a tiny bit of tweaking to her face to make it look exactly right but I still think it’s easily doable
I always assumed it didn’t jell with her personality, so he changed it last minute. Maru's old design feels more open and friendly, in contrast with her stoic personaility.
The old Maru portraits had more of a Leah vibe in their designs, with a little Penny in some of them.

You are correct, that was a poor choice of words on my part. I edited that comment a lot because it didn’t feel right but couldn’t put my finger on it.
I meant it more that they feel like they belong in different spots on the introvert-extrovert spectrum and the newer designs feel closer to Maru’s place on the graph. Old Maru gives off a slightly more stylish, social butterfly vibe. Like, she’s shy but still puts herself out there, while the newer designs all feel content and happy with their smaller social circles. Also, I don’t get the impression the old designs would convey excitement as strongly as her current happy portrait.
Yeah, Maru isn’t stoic. I think “reserved” might’ve worked better, but it doesn’t fit, either. She may not interact with many villagers in her off time, but she’s invested in the interactions she has. I’m not sure how to describe that vibe in a few words. She’s not shy like Penny, and “introverted” still describes the old portraits to an extent. My vocabulary failed me on this one.
As someone that used to do pixel art on a very small scale I always assumed it was because making curls like the ones in old Maru designs but on her overworld sprite would've been hell to get it to look good. Eric is the sole creator of everything in stardew, so there isn't another designer to pass her to if he was struggling so bad with it. That's just my theory though, I definitely could be wrong
see i thought that too, but if you go to her wiki and click the dev update and scroll down, he had a sprite for her curly haired portrait that looked fine, it didn’t look completely accurate but almost none of the other characters sprites are that portrait accurate either
Where can you find that? I don't remember seeing overworld sprites of characters with unfinished designs on the wiki, but I definitely could be mistaken

That's what I've always thought. Her mom has wavy hair, her dad appears to be a Black man. I would expect her to have curly hair. And she doesn't seem like the type to spend her time straightening her hair.
Maru is confirmed to be the child of Demetrius and Robin, while Sebastian is confirmed to be step child of Demetrius and child of Robin. They have dialogue about it. Although I’m not sure Robin has dialogue about Maru so maybe she’s from another marriage of Demetrius’s? I don’t think so though, and it’s never mentioned that Demetrius had another relationship at any point

I used to use a mod to change her back to this look, but the one I was using hasn't been updated in years, since before they added in the summer outfits, so it's not really viable now. I've been looking for another that turns her back into that, but updated for the current patch, but without any luck. There are some different ones people have made that are like a combination of her current look with that beta one that aren't bad, so I might just compromise and grab one of those.
I know a few black women who chemically straighten their natural hair because it's easier for daily maintenance. We work in an industrial setting so I can see the point. Of course there's other women who do different options- braids, short hair, etc.
We see her wear a decent amount of makeup, so it's not like she doesn't care about her looks, it's just not the main focus. Also that hair color is not natural, so she dyes it as well. Being nerdy and a tinker doesn't mean she can't like doing her hair, especially if she just likes it this way.
We are talking about a world where magic is real. I’m not the kind of person most people would think would bother straightening my hair yet sometimes I do
I use a portrait mod for her so had to actually look it up cause forgot what the original was and.. Ya I remember why I didn't like it.
It isn't.. Bad per say, just always been surprised by how straight it is. I figured out of all the gals she'd be the one to have the most texture to her hair, not Haley with her beach waves.
Maru revised on Nexus (along with this mod creator’s other revised mods) is my favorite for this reason.

I think the style's fine, but something is weird about the colors in her portrait...like is it me or do they kind of bleed together? Like everything is kind of purplish.
I like the idea of her having microbraids but it just looks like straight hair and it bothers me so much since she's the only black girl and poc within the romanceable cast :/ As much as I love SV, diversity isn't a strong suit in it

Yeah her portrait looked fine but I was talking about her overworld sprite. It has a lot smaller of a canvas to work on than the portraits
