Yeah, it's pretty good, but only if you happen to like fishing a lot, and I do.
I didn't use this method before 1.6, because it wasn't worth the effort even for me. But now with fish smokers, it's a different story.
Could have caught way more, but I missed the entire first day due to getting the quest late at night. Also, no fish mastery yet (could've used 2 tackles).
Unironically just fish more, it gets wayy easier with time
You can also add tackles to the fishing rod, i recommend the trap bobber if you're struggling
Crab pots give fishing experience, so you can "cheese" you way to level 10 and then it should get like 90% easier except for a few agressive fish like sturgeon, lingcod and such. It doesn't matter what you catch in the pot so you can craft a few to have on your farm and harvest them everyday.
Go to the sewer and fish off the platform. The only fish there are the Mutant Carp and normal Carp, the latter of which hang out by the bottom and are very easy to catch. Fishing tackle and fishing buff food can both increase the size of the fishing bar, after a certain point you won't have to do anything to catch regular Carp.
Or just do crab pots if you don't want to fish at all.

You couldn't pay me to go through the pain of actually catching that many of those

Luckily, >!fishing mastery makes it a lot easier, since you can then add more bobbers to help out!<

Throw on a quality bobber and you can make them iridium for even more.
How do you have 14of them? I thought it was 1 per save?
The Legend is 1 per save. But that is the Legend II, which you can fish repeatedly when the Extended Family Quest is active.

To add to your suggestions, eat food that gives +fishing! It makes the bar much larger, it's pretty awesome
