You put the defenses on switches or sensors. Solar roofs are pretty nice except for having to build with brick or concrete which can take a hot minute. Op is also using mods
I play without mods and solar roofs are great when paired with alot of generators. I basically don't worry about power ever. You get more out of solar roofs vs solar panels due to spacing. Panels require access to it in order to repair it if it malfunctions where as solar roofs never malfunctions and generates more power since you are using the entire roof. This is assuming you are not using improved solar or granphene solar.
I have a base built where all roofs are solar panel roofs, and my warehouse has 6 batteries with 9 windmills up top for the night time and solar eclipse
