"Swallowed" isn't the right word here. Humpback whales can't swallow large objects. Despite their immense size, their throats aren't much larger than those of humans. I'm sure it was an absolutely terrifying experience, but it was probably an accident on the whale's part, and they were in no danger of being swallowed alive. Humpbacks are usually gentle creatures and pose no threat to humans.
Maybe Jonah really was swallowed by a whale. Though it says "great fish". Perhaps he was swallowed by Leviathan, "The Bloop" that happens in the ocean.
