Most importantly, the real reason behind this change is that it's using Tifa's design from Crisis Core Reunion from what I can tell. Remake only used that design in an extremely brief flashback where they just probably threw something on her existing adult model. This is my hill. Tifa is a character designed primarily by adult men. I can let it slide that her adult character design is serves as some kind of sexual wish fulfillment. That always makes me laugh because of how successful the game was. There is an argument to be made about Japan (over)glorifying "youth" though, ngl. To the point it becomes creepy sometimes - japanese idols are essentially active and popular from their teenage years until their mid twenties at most, as an example. They retire early because they do not sell well once they're adults, as early as 20yo. With how strict japanese work environments are, maybe the average japanese person does kinda wish they could live back their younger years. Just food for thought. Obviously shonen and similar manga sell well because their target demographic are high schoolers, that I fully agree with.
Yeah, this is not a new argument being made by one guy on KIA, the idea that Japanese adults are obsessed with high school has been one going around the internet for over a decade. Usually not in defense of pedophilia though, like you said, it's about how the work culture in Japan is incredibly stifling and the amount of freedom they have in high school makes it their equivalent to the American college experience. That doesn't mean that shonen stuff is targeted primarily at adults, but there is definitely media targeted at adults that still uses the high school setting for the nostalgia of it.
This is hilarious, because the target audience is literally in the name - "shounen" simply means "(young) boy". It features mainly teens because it's aimed at Japanese highschoolers (who are really nostalgic about their high school years, surely). It's not targeted at sweaty 30+ weeaboos drooling over mass-produced schlock for teens because it's deep Art from the Glorious Nippon.

Everyone's all hung up on the nonsense about "15 year old with the body of an 18 year old", "500 year old with the body of a 12 year old", "is it even pedophilia if it's a fictional character?". But let's put that all aside, and imagine that the game developers had given a marginally more modest outfit to a 25 year old woman in a cutscene where she's mourning her father's death. Anyone complaining about the change would still be deserving of mockery.

As an actual father I'm very confused about that myself. My kids are grown, but it hasn't been that long since they were 15. I would have had no issues telling them what to wear if I'd wanted to. Also since I was buying the damn clothes I literally controlled what they wore pretty much completely.

But for this outfit change specifically, yeah, I would think you were a bad guy if you said "woah daughter... do not allow even a hint of cleavage to show." Now on the other hand, if you as a father (or a person in society) were upset that a 15 year old CHOSE to cover up, and were talking about how she's giving in to censorship and is a woke freak... Idk man, I think I would probably ALSO think you were the bad guy, perhaps even moreso. And sure, the character isn't making a choice one way or the other, but if we're going to resort to a bad comparison between "company changed outfit for reasons" and "father reprimanding daughter", might as well do it both ways.

I got sucked into a Mens Rights rabbit hole when I was in my 20s, and this was one of the things that helped me first see the flaws in my logic and start crawling out of it. Someone pointed out that the people I was upset about didn't exist, that I was making up a person to be mad at, and then controlling what that fake person did and said in order to make myself as mad as possible. Eventually I realized that of the people I thought were this big group ruining my life, I'd never actually met any, I'd just been told they were a problem and they *would* say this, if they were here! If they don't have a valid opponent to criticize, they *invent one*.
