They should have tagged Gensler in that tweet...

jamesstrogg

Maybe I will

notyouraverage420

DO IT

buyandhoard

South Korea rocks

ku20000

It's not that simple. SK stock market is very easy to manipulate due to it's size(small). Individuals can also manipulate it with social media and pump and dump with enough dough. Add short selling to that, you get a highly manipulated stock market with only selected players win. Much more than US markets. And it makes the market too volatile to invest long term.

pho-huck

lol as if that shit doesn’t happen in our market due to billionaires and VC’s doing the same shit even in our larger market

WalksTheMeats

I think you underestimate the level of corruption in SK. We meme about corporations in the US exerting soft power to manipulate things for their advantage, but in SK they are fucking brazen with their attempts at maintaining advantage. A great Reddit-centric example would be the closure of Twitch Korea. SK's big 3 telecoms basically just said "No thanks" and jacked up data rates arbitrarily. Didn't even try to hide it, they just did it completely out in the open, because the SK government has no power to stop them.

pho-huck

And I’m stating that I think you underestimate the level of corruption in the US. The very fact that SK can put a law like this in place, speaks to their willingness to fight that sort of corruption. This sort of thing would be dead in 5 minutes in the US.

Apprehensive_Pea7911

You're factually correct about Korea but not about the relativity to the US. The US corporate corruption is thoroughly entrenched in many sectors. Haliburton can dictate foreign policy. Marlboro man can dictate health policy and a competitor like Juul's fate. Meta can force the sale of Tik Tok. Elon can manipulate the price of doggecooin in collusion with Mayo and SNL. Amazon can cellar box retail companies with hedge fund friends. These examples are literally world famous stories.

KamuchiNL

Incase anyone forgot why South Korea is important: Semi conductors and some of the biggest companies on the planet, aka Samsung, NXP and LG https://companiesmarketcap.com/south-korea/largest-companies-in-south-korea-by-market-cap/

whoisbh

As an American that’s lived in SK during my time in the military I can say that place is absolutely amazing.

Ascertain_GME

In what sense? Genuinely curious. I work for a S. Korean based company and they seem pretty chill aside from the higher ups having god complexes. Makes me wonder how much Chaebol plays a role in their society.

BenwaBallss

In every sense (except maybe work). The culture of respect, safety, and care will blow your mind away. As Americans, it’s very “me vs the world” and that’s just now how Koreans function. You want to make a friend: talk to someone like a friend and get to know them. People are open, respectful, and full of joy in Korea. I’m sure the nation and population have their complaints about their own society, but as an outsider experiencing something new, it’s amazing.

whoisbh

My experience there was good. People were nice and friendly to me the girls love American soldiers. I enjoyed learning about the history and culture I took it all in and enjoyed the experience fully. Now the rest of the stuff sucked as far as military training was concerned 😂

Pinochet1191973

It seems a sensible approach. Level playing field and no shenanigans. The liquidity argument does not really stand. No major stock exchange has liquidity issues, and stocks that are heavily shorted normally have enormous liquidity.

Cereal_Frio

All my homies love South Korea

Gotrek5

They should extend warrants world wide so those cucks shorting can't travel to Their beautiful country anymore.

South Korea has more morals when it comes to investing than USA. Let that sink in!

thisisafakestory

That wasn't a high bar you set

scatpackcatdaddy

All well and good, but we already have a history of not enforcing laws already on the books so 🤷‍♂️

ANTS!!! ANTS!!! ANTS!!! ANTS!!!

RealPropRandy

Imagine that. Punishing the parasites pawning other people’s stuff.

Livinsfloridalife

What’s punishable by life in jail in South Korea is SOP here in us….we are a fucking joke

jentravelstheworld

Fuck yeah. Go South Korea!!!

jessimae888

This seems like a direct result of many South Korean apes not being able to direct register their shares from their brokerages over these few years. I’m sure the regulators became aware as to why they wanted to direct register in the first place. 👀

Hedkandi1210

Wen Kenny

Newbs2u

Day Dream: SHF's flights get diverted to SK, upon landing they are jailed. US becomes a beacon of light and wealth is redistributed from Fegate, Cayman and Panama back to the Citizens. Aahhhhh

whoisbh

South Korea likes the stock

Dagamoth

But has anyone there thought of the poor liquidity fairy??

don_kong1969

We should be asking Gensler and the SEC why this isn't something the US should do as well. Make them answer for why it's allowed.

BlakByPopularDemand

God Bless Korea

hotDamQc

Kenny not moving to South Korea ever

etherrich

Then they make shorts as long.

[deleted]

This is spicy

grixxel

Looks like I’m moving to South Korea with my money

ttongko

대.한.민.국!!!

MelvinDeezNuts

stirfriedaxon

We'd never do anything like that in the US...freedom and capitalism bombs be dropping err'where before we clean up our own house.

_Awakened_Warrior_

I wonder why through March 30th rather than just permanently?

sistersucksx

LIFE IN JAIL HOLY SHIT

MahlNinja

It's pretty clear the leaders on both sides of the political spectrum don't give a fuck in this country.  They want the payoffs.

batmanbury

See, it’s not hard when there are actual boundaries in the upper echelons of government.

data-artist

Short selling is a scam - Brokerage houses “lend” your shares of stock without your permission to short sellers so they can make money by lowering the value of your stock. This is theft and they have no right to do this.

rayrockstar

US policymakers should learn from South Korea

bausell845

Yeah sure. banning short selling is a direct result of declining birth rate. Look! A squirrel.

LookBeyondLandR

First - it was sarcasm that they did this because of them extincting themselves.. I guess it was not the most obvious sarcasm for actual regards in this sub. Second - they are extincting themselves and they are not the only country. It is pretty well-known if you do any research regarding populations/birth rates.. which is why I made a joke about them doing something for the people.
