Funny-Plantain3647

I'm going to miss that location, part of my childhood. Giant Toys R US, Canadian tire. The world is always changing! (Also RIP A&B sound)

flay88

Don’t forget Future Shop!

TimethTwoShoes

Don’t forget the A&W that used to be right there too.

junkdumper

It's gone now too?!

ttwwiirrll

Long gone. It's condos.

HARDCOR3_HERO

That one relocated to king George station.

GolDAsce

KMart, bought my first Canucks jacket there.

Funny-Plantain3647

Zellers!

DN1097

Zellers is coming back. Sort of?

AltruisticStandard26

My first job was at Kmart!

InsouciantSoul

Oh shit that was Toys r us

Abject-Hornet5355

And K-mart

shaun5565

Loved a&b sound

El_Cactus_Loco

Buddy of mine rocks a a&b sound tshirt, always gets comments on it. People miss that place!

shaun5565

I have never been to any in BC as I lived in Alberta when they were in business. My friend was really good with stereo equipment so we would go buy some speakers and cds and he would install them for me. They had an awesome stereo section there. Really miss that place.

Natus_est_in_Suht

That's a loss for Whalley. The nearest locations are down King George in Newton or across the Port Mann Bridge to the Coquitlam location off Lougheed Hwy. I normally shopped at that Canadian Tire every two months or so. It was a decent store and much better compared with the Newton location. I'd guess the entire parking lot will soon be blocked off. I wonder how long the Save-on-Foods and Canadian Tire buildings will remain standing?

LordYoshii

The newton location SUCKS.

North-Philosopher-41

I don’t know what you mean I goto the Newton one on occasion and never had a bad experience

LordYoshii

There is no space whatsoever to move anywhere in that store. Aside from that, I’ve had multiple problems trying to return faulty products only at this Cdn Tire. Their management is trash.

TCHuts

They sell things in already opened packages at the same price as untouched product then refuse to do anything if there is a problem, claiming it’s “used”

LordYoshii

Yup. Scummy.

North-Philosopher-41

Understandable have a nice day

LordYoshii

You as well

chloe38

Everything in Newton sucks lol. Every store is always so dirty and messy and gross. I go out of my way, to go to either Fleetwood, South surrey or Cloverdale for all my shopping.

LordYoshii

I live in Fleetwood, and the closest Cnd Tire & Costco is Newton 🥲

krustykrab2193

In Fleetwood too, usually just go down to Langley Costco and South Surrey Canadian Tire. Langley is a little further but it has a gas station

Orqee

Fudge langley Costco, there is no parking like ever

quaywest

Both Surrey and Langley are nightmares. They need to get on with the South Surrey Costco already.

Orqee

I few years back Costco guys told me that they wanna build bigger Costco, but there is no space.

quaywest

The story I heard is the city wanted underground parking (like Superstore and Walmart) and Costco refused. This goes back a decade, probably more.

the_greatest_fight

I live in Fleetwood too! Same boat here!

Notsurewhattosee

That’s what we do too, Newton stores are gross and mismanaged, plus rude store staff

bockscar7

as someone who grew up in newton, who *literally worked at the canadian tire* at KG & 72nd in the late 2000s, gotta say - it's true. surrey's gross. there're shops i like, restaurants i like, but still - overall, surrey is uniquely gross. i've lived and worked throughout the lower mainland and the island, and it only becomes more apparent. frankly, i think a lot of it comes down to the city being a suburbs-centered "way-point" - there's no meaningful sense of community, no meaningful sense of "ownership," and that (as well as other factors, obviously) contributes to a local culture where folks really don't give a fuck about contributing their fair (small) share to making the city an appealing, welcoming, thriving space.

Orqee

Surrey is immigrant city,… a large bunch of people here came from overseas, I would like to believe it will take some time but they will assimilate.

Former-Amphibian-875

I have been here for 22 years , the assimilation never ends, you just keep on rude folks every year more in number than last. As an immigrant and POC myself the rudeness astonishes me.

Orqee

You’re probably right, what really bugs me is that they keep bringing more and more people who never had any notion of becoming part of the culture here, they live in geto communities. Some of them don’t speak English what so ever.

Dollarbill1210

There is no assimilation unfortunately. This country is so weak that it does not have its core value and it does not has the ability to forge a culture that brings everybody together. Instead of assimilation or naturalization they now colonize. Surrey is now another India. As matter of fact, Canada is becoming a 3rd world country.

BobBelcher2021

And the Coquitlam location is tiny and doesn’t have the same selection as Whalley.

LordYoshii

Yup. I went into Whalley on Thursday to get a vacuum cleaner and was puzzled why everything was 50% off and even more puzzled as to why it wasn’t advertised!

Civil-Package

There\\s one at Scott Rd and 80 Ave

Kybothegreat

Closest one is Newton though. Much easier to get to

Kybothegreat

As far as the Canadian Tire, they start demolishing the auto service area mid July to do the environmental work and remediation of the soil and start the rest of the building in September, so it will happen very quickly!

Coolguy6979

The Save On in Whalley is expected to be shut down soon, I work at the company and there are plans to shut it down sometime in the near future. It’s just a matter of time at this point.

19JTJK

Going to say someone working at the company would have know that it’s long gone.

Natus_est_in_Suht

The Save-on-Foods at that location shut down over a year ago. The new location down the street at King George Hub replaced it.

Coolguy6979

Oh I haven’t been to that area in a long time, I knew about the Hub location but thanks for letting me know that the Whaley one shut down a year ago.

BrownFox5972

YOu're forgetting the scott road location.

Cultural-Chemical449

One at Scott Rd and 80th ... In the Surrey side

cburry99

scott road location is fairly close as well

[deleted]

wtf... this is the one i always go to no!!!!!!!

yzraeu

> Used to go to Fixed that for you

Thrownawaybyall

*ahem* Apparently... yes.

brophy87

No new locations will be opening nearby

bockscar7

is it already closed? like, is it literally not going to open up monday morning?

brophy87

I believe this is the case. Its been known for a long time that this would get torn down and a bunch of apartment condos and a town square would come in. Current stock will likely go back to their distro center.

Kybothegreat

This is 100% accurate. Close yesterday at 8pm and will be demolished once the inventory and fixtures are gone. All of the inventory is going down the street to the Newton store.

PotentialFrosting102

Right on, now we will end up with more overpriced low-quality condos.

LebaneseLion

I hate it here, I miss 2010

reddits2much

Yeah I think people who’ve been here a while know the ‘good ol’ days’ while newcomers don’t know the difference and are sucked in by the newness of it all. Eventually the reality sinks in when they’re late on rent or sleeping with 5 other roomies

PotentialFrosting102

Probably won't be any ranchers or "starter homes" left in the area within 5 years as well. Half the new condos in the area are a joke. Not sure who is actually buying into this garbage.

reddits2much

Sadly you are right on the money. Looking forward to the day when I get to sleep in a solarium for $1000 a month..

mrdeworde

Investors. Why would they care about the quality of their 1 bedroom, 200 sq foot ($600,000) shitboxes when they'll never be living in them?

mysticode

Unrelated... but /u/brophy87 have you heard about Vlassis Greek closing down? I see "Deily Beily" in their location now?

Sparkle_And_Shine_04

Yah, I ordered for the last time at the end of May and the owner told me they were closing down, I think, the 2nd week of June. They said rent for the building had absolutely skyrocketed and they couldn't make a go of it any longer. How sad. They had good food. I asked if they'd be opening elsewhere and she said no.

Aquafish14

Sadly their last day was June 12th. The owner has decided to retire.

stylezLP

Awe that's a shame too. I didn't know that and always wished we could give more of our business but their prices did skyrocket significantly after lockdown. :(

brophy87

Nope

[deleted]

They would always take my bag at the front. Surrey was wild in 2015

brophy87

They did right up to the end.

[deleted]

God I hate how polarizing Surrey is. South Surrey / crescent beach was gorgeous growing up

NextTrillion

I just walked right past them with my bag. If they complained, I’d just say call the cops and continue on. I’m not leaving my camera with them.

WineCheeseNStimpacks

The Newton location still does this. Last time I went in there they took my bag at the front. Bit of a tangent, but I went in there to buy a bicycle. I'd previously bought bikes from Walmart twice that had air in the tires when I bought them. So my plan was to just ride it home, But at Canadian Tire I didn't realize they just leave them with almost no air in them. I got outside and realized only then there was no air in the tires. so I wound up walking back in to buy an air pump so I could ride it home.

[deleted]

God forbid you steal the air

esobofh

this location has been poorly operated for a long while now.. bad inventory control (obvious theft issues), online orders always fail because the stock reflected online never matches what's in store. No returns are accepted.. lots of product is opened and in poor condition. just generally a crap run store and won't be missed.. i generally hop over the coquitlam if i need something from crappy tire.

Retrofires

I remember when it was a Kmart back in the day.

brophy87

I'd go every day right after watching Matlock

stylezLP

>right after watching Matlock Did you know there's a reboot coming with Kathy Bates? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-t4faVu48A](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-t4faVu48A)

TCHuts

They sold great hotdogs at Kmart cafe

Electrical-Finding65

What will it be replaced by? A high rise?

Xraylasers

https://youtu.be/f574Kdzl6iU

mysticode

Yes, been in the cards for years. Multi-phased tower community.

pinchymcloaf

lame, gonna be replaced by highrises i'm assuming?

Used_Water_2468

Why would they relocate? So the area crackheads can steal from the new location too?

Doobage

As much as this sucks, if there was competition nearby for the auto-parts market this store would have been closed a decade ago. The service there sucked. To get a bike tire tube it was behind a locked gate, 4 employees said they would be back in a minute, 20 minutes later nothing. Found another employee and he helped but said "ya people here don't like working here, I don't like working here." Another time trying to find something one employee sent me to one corner of the store, couldn't find it the person said oh no it is over there, way at the opposite end, and in the long run both were wrong. It is an inconvenience to not have it. But my shopping experience will get better.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Doobage

Hahahaha! I needed a multimeter it was behind locks. They unlocked it and said it would be a till #1 when I was done shopping. I got to the line up and the exact same multimeter was on the shelves in the line for the teller!

[deleted]

As much as it's a pain you do understand why though right? It's a hardware store in the heart of whalley, the theft that went on in that place was ridiculous, the had a literal cage to hold people. The reason it's not locked at the till is because there's always a cashier there and it's much harder to steal when you're surrounded by other people or someone who's constantly watching/waiting in that spot.

throwaway26578426832

Isn't it illegal to hold people in a cage unless you're the police/law enforcement?

[deleted]

I guess not if they're caught stealing or something, police would come and get them from the cage so... It's not a dog cage, it's like a jail cell could probably have fit like 4-5 people in there. It probably falls under citizens arrest or something, so long as they don't rough them up, etc they're probably allowed to legally hold them there until the police arrive.

[deleted]

Not a big loss. It was the shittiest Canadian tire in the city (tied with Newton). Why do I say these stores suck? Because they lock every $5 tool behind metal grates to deter thieves. I like to pick up and hold tools before buying them. I dont like asking an associate to open a display case for every little item.

stylezLP

Awe why didn't they have a 'location closing sale' ?! Sadness to lose this location for the convenience on the odd household item or car part. I wish they'd find a spot once the new developments go up.

hausautt

I wonder too.

mrdeworde

Someone mentioned above - why sell at a loss when the stock can just be moved to other local stores in the chain?

[deleted]

I Remeber when kmart was in this location

Upbeat_Discussion_38

Homeless people loss another source of income.

bwoah07_gp2

Once I desperately needed the toilets, so I used the Canadian Tire here. The freaking bathroom (toilet, floor, and parts of back wall behind toilet) were smeared with someone's poop. Goodness me, I had to squat above that mess. A dreadful experience. And don't get me started on Whalley McDonalds! That's a dump too!

dyoung62026

Where will the crack heads steal from now?

MantisGibbon

Your house.

billhbob

Anyone know what's going on with the best buy?

console3232

Last I had heard was a 30ish story office tower. Possible mixed with some residential use

femmefatality__

Which one?

LebaneseLion

The surrey central one lol

604zaza

When?!

GrayAtNight

What a pain! I was really hoping it would relocate, the area really needs something like this.

beemitch

Ugh. Now where will I get my pool filters from. All the other locations around are trash.

TwilightReader100

This is one of the locations that never wanted you to bring any bag bigger than a Ziploc snack baggie in with you. /s With that in mind, good riddance.

ttwwiirrll

They once made me check a bag of produce from Save-On next door at the service desk. Dude, I just paid $10 for these grapes. I'm not going to hide stuff in this bag and risk crushing them. Meanwhile there are obvious crackheads with backpacks wandering through the store.

TwilightReader100

Yeah, they always wanted me to check my backpack. I don't trust their employees with my stuff anymore than they trust me with it. Or they were always wanting to check it before I left. They have to have had somebody watching you put unpaid items in your bag in order to check it, they can't require you to show them inside otherwise. I knew they weren't watching me because I never put anything in my bag, sometimes I don't even take it off. And they were checking everybody with a backpack. So I'd just walk out. After a few times of that, I just stopped going there and it didn't exist anymore, for me. The Cambie Street store doesn't do it but that's the only one that I know for sure doesn't.

Notsurewhattosee

Oh noooooo , my favourite store, now I’ll have to go to the newton one on King George

Vikings8411

All the retail stores are closing in that area. Say hello to the new downtown.

[deleted]

:((((((((

Interesting_Scale866

scam company.

CEOAerotyneLtd

Judging by all the security barriers in front a great idea

Original_Shopping_64

☹️☹️😔😔

_SomeBrownDude_

Source?

GreenStreakHair

Actually says online too. Just google it.

ulitmosparc

so glad I will close soon. At the end the service wasn't good anymore I am used to and more and more pricy. Customer service is wful. For regular car inspection I paid 132 Dollar. I hope smaller businesses will be set in near future.

babbanmavali

Where to return the product which was bought 2 weeks back from this store? Can I return the product in any nearby Canadian Tire store?

brophy87

Yes

Psychological-Box100

Nooooo!!!!!

Aggressive-Park9455

it was small but great store

whatabento

Well, here we go with a walkable city that has a low scale Walmart and specialized grocery stores. Guess the McD is the next to go now that the one on 128th and KG is built. And since the bus only runs once an hour it's the car and shopping in Burnaby at Marine Crossing Way. Save-on, Cob's, London Drugs, Kin's, Canadian Tire, Reitmans, Marks. Thank goodness we are getting a new bridge.

TranslatorRadiant495

I was waiting for the closing sale and to here about where their new location would be. I never expected neither to happen. They should look for a new location and be a large one cause newton and coquitlan are both small. I'm a little sad cause i remember when this was Kmart plaza with Home town and canadas 2nd McDonald's and how busy it once was.
