When I was five years old I ran away from my mom at a shopping mall in Sao Paulo and sat on the an escalator on my way down.
The best surgeon in town reconstructed my tiny hand and I got a few stitches in my butt too... I was lucky not to have lost any fingers!
I've pulled a kid off of the bottom an escalator seconds before he met this fate. The mom kept walking and the kid ran back to her like I was the Boogeyman.
39 years after my incident, my mom still remembers a woman well dressed in white clothes, she grabbed me without doubt, got blood all over her clothes and took me to the mall's emergency room.
My mom was busy with my older brother and my younger brother on the stroller, so when we finally could try to reach this woman was gone, but she's always been grateful for that loving gesture!

I've never heard of a mall-based emergency room (not sure if they have them here in the US, but I've never seen them). Are they affiliated with the mall, or are they like a private urgent care?
Here in Brazil it's common for shopping malls, specially the bigger ones, to have an ambulatory care room staffed with a paramedic, usually outside of people's view.
I went to one after feeling dizzy during a movie session many years ago.
We have emergency room in malls in my side of the world. For smaller malls, it's usually staffed by a junior doctor or an emergency nurse. The bigger ones usually has more staffs or even affiliated with clinics or private hospitals.

I have the same story! Crowded mall department store. I was four. An entire escalator full of people came to an instant stop. I ran off to Mom, she took one look at my face and said "Let's go!"

The physics are crazy weird. The first show just suddenly stood up on it tip for absolutely no reason. The second shoe sits sideways on the escalator without moving forward for several seconds as the first shoe goes away. The shoes also vanish far too quickly at the end, several inches just disappear.
Nah I'm afraid of these machines. Once watched one of these fail in a Chinese video. The metal sheets at the end of the stairs have in and a woman fell through and was crushed to death. At least she managed to pass her kid to a shopping mall employee but that shit stays rent free in my mind and I'm always a bit afraid when going towards the end of the escalator.
It's funny how when the effects are really good, we just take for granted that they should just work

A few months ago we were at the mall and saw an out of order sign on an escalator from a good distance. My kid said “isn’t that just stairs?”. Then we got closer and NO. It was a giant hole. And just a little sign on a cone. If someone wasn’t paying attention they could have fallen VERY far.
I was at an airport (I think it was Chicago or Vegas) a great months ago that had those flat "escalators" to move quicker than just walking. There were 3 or 4 in a row, with maybe 20 feet between each set. One of them had one out in the middle and it was a gaping hole. They had like 2 cones and that was it before a pretty high fall. That was scary to look at in the middle of an airport.
Reminds me about the video in a Chinese mall where a mother and child fall inside the escalator.
Apparently the mother, just in time, pushed her child up to (with help of others) out before being pulled into the machine.
That video haunts me.
They can definitely be non functional as stairs while appearing as such. If the mechanism that holds the track in place when there's no power were to break, you wouldn't be able to walk up the escalator, your weight would just push the step you're standing on down to the base, sort of like an inside out hamster wheel.
Listen, not a year goes by, not a year, that I don't hear about some escalator accident involving some bastard kid which could have easily been avoided had some parent, I don't care which one, but some parent conditioned him to fear and respect that escalator.
My mom warned me about escalators once I was too big for the stroller. She told me about kids getting hurt on escalators to make me be cautious but it completely backfired because I became terrified of them. I would *not* go on them. I can’t tell you how many memories I have of my parents yelling at me to get on the escalator while they rise to the heavens. It’s so funny now but the fear was real and I was 16 I think by the time I got over it but was still anxious. As of now, I’m confident and practiced with escalators.

Reminds me of that one Chinese video of a mom and her son who got on an escalator going up at the mall, they get to the top and as soon as they do the it starts to collapse, mom in her quick thinking pushes the kid forward and out of the way, ended up sacrificing herself. Nearby store workers grab the kids and watch as the mom falls in, later it mentions that’s firefighters came, shut it down, and the mom was beyond the point of saving when they found her, she fell into the escalator shaft and got mangled up apparently.
My gf at the time kept her shoelaces untied. We went onto an escalator and I warned her to tie those up so they wouldn't get caught. She didn't listen, and sure enough, her shoelace got caught and she hurt her ankle as it got squeezed by the shoe. She always kept her shoes tied afterwards 🤷♂️
I worked with a guy who used to maintain and repair escalators at airports. He told me of when a coworker turned the power off to the escalator at the breaker box but didn’t put the lock 🔒 on the breaker box. He proceeded to get inside the escalator and work on it. Someone else flipped the breaker and flipped the switch on the escalator and it started back up with him inside. People standing by heard him cry and scream for a few moments before he was crushed to death. Whatya gonna do, boys will be boys. Live and Learn 🤷♂️💀

One of the "sillier" things I've had to do over my career was guarding an escalator. Do you have any idea how many people with loose clothing will sit on an up escalator? Or plank across it? When I was a kid our dentist office was in a building that you had to go up escalators. They had framed pictures of little kids playing on playstructures, each with missing fingers/toes at the top as like a general warning, don't fukc around on these. My son literally.got his toenail ripped off by an escalator a few days ago... when i was in HS a friend had the toe of his shoe pressed against the raised section of the step in front... it chopped off the toe of his shoe... the only yhing that saved his toes was he had them curled up inside the shoe.

This just happened to me! I was wearing crocs and it sucked in my foot. If I didn’t rip my foot out in time it would have eaten my foot! Then I had no shoe in LA, and the place where it happened wouldn’t replace my shoe till I threaten legal action. I had to walk to my car barefoot and got new shoes the next day.

Look carefully as the last shoe is "ingested". You can see the top of the shoe go by on the top plate. As if it was a clipped texture in CGI.
For me it was how "clean" it obliterated the shoes, and so quickly. Also the sound effects were pretty obvious.

My gf at the time kept her shoelaces untied. We went onto an escalator and I warned her to tie those up so they wouldn't get caught. She didn't listen, and sure enough, her shoelace got caught and she hurt her ankle as it got squeezed by the shoe. She always kept her shoes tied afterwards 🤷♂️

I worked with a guy who used to maintain and repair escalators at airports. He told me of when a coworker turned the power off to the escalator at the breaker box but didn’t put the lock 🔒 on the breaker box. He proceeded to get inside the escalator and work on it. Someone else flipped the breaker and flipped the switch on the escalator and it started back up with him inside. People standing by heard him cry and scream for a few moments before he was crushed to death. Whatya gonna do, boys will be boys. Live and Learn 🤷♂️💀

One of the "sillier" things I've had to do over my career was guarding an escalator. Do you have any idea how many people with loose clothing will sit on an up escalator? Or plank across it? Or run down an up escalator? These things are dangerous. Before I started, an intoxicated gentleman tried to run down and absolutely shredded his face and abdomen.

When I was a kid our dentist office was in a building that you had to go up escalators. They had framed pictures of little kids playing on playstructures, each with missing fingers/toes at the top as like a general warning, don't fukc around on these. I was terrified of losing a toe on an escalator for years so...mission accomplished?

My son literally.got his toenail ripped off by an escalator a few days ago... when i was in HS a friend had the toe of his shoe pressed against the raised section of the step in front... it chopped off the toe of his shoe... the only yhing that saved his toes was he had them curled up inside the shoe. You need to give escalators healthy respect. Things can go south very quickly with them.

As a kid one of my friends sat down on an escalator step while wearing a skirt and her underwear got sucked in. No joke. Since then, that’s what I always think of when I use an escalator.

This just happened to me! I was wearing crocs and it sucked in my foot. If I didn’t rip my foot out in time it would have eaten my foot! Then I had no shoe in LA, and the place where it happened wouldn’t replace my shoe till I threaten legal action. I had to walk to my car barefoot and got new shoes the next day.
Ive seen videos of people get shredded by these things. I always take the stairs… I slipped on the stairs two years ago and have rods and plates in my spine. 🤷🏻♂️
