Not a dentist/doctor but the same happened to me. It was a hard, tight fitting mouth guard on the lower teeth which was so tight it would squeeze my teeth and cause pain. Dentist said this was normal. I noticed wearing it was making me grind even more, and actually clench so hard that I broke some teeth at the top back. I don't know why these things have to be so uncomfortable 😅 Anyhow, stopped wearing it and found a new dentist that does a soft mouth guard. It protects the teeth and isn't painful to wear. (Bear in my mind there are splints and mouth guards. I've never had a splint which is meant to be hard)

You maybe have seen my posts about Theraflex RX pain relief cream. It works!! Please see the website: theraflexrx.com. And, I have a splint that sits only on the front teeth. This enables the masseter muscle to finally relax!! Extremely important!! I think the worst pain is from the masseter muscle spasming. Horseshoe splints never helped me. Splints that sit only on the front teeth work on the same principle as the NTI, which you can get at a providing dentist. But, it costs about $500. The OTC Brux splint is one of them that sits only on the front teeth. ($59)
