Me too. At first I didn't like the 2003 show because it was different from the 87 one. I remember seeing Hun and wondering where Bebop & Rocksteady were. I also remember looking at Shredder with those red eyes and thinking to myself "Why is Shredder so serious and scary? Why is he not funny like the 87 Shredder?" lol As I get older though I prefer shows to be more serious, I can't get into shows with more comedy as much anymore, even though I do laugh some times at some funny scenes. I respect the 87 show for giving me good childhood memories though.
Did you skip over the original 90's movie because I have more memories with that than the 80's Turtles despite both being apart of my childhood and Shredder was always a scary SOB from then on.
87 is pure nostalgia, old school Sat morning cartoons
03 is more mature storytelling
2012 is an awesome blend of the Mirage comics and 87 cartoons
2018 is not for me in the slightest
I just found it to be too much like a kid's show entirely for what I am looking for. I had similar issues with Mutant Mayhem but I get why people are into those. My kids love both, though, so I'm happy they have it.
I fucking loved Mutant Mayhem. I think that Splinter might be my fav one. He's so odd. lol Something about the art style and the music really did it for me in that one. I just worry what they're going to do with Shredder.
Oh man, that version of splinter is probably one of the reasons I dislike that movie so much lol to each their own. I really hope they don’t drop the ball w/ the Ronin film.
yeah, that would be pretty cool. Would be awesome to get an animated series set in the Ronin universe that went through the timelines. I like that TMNT can have different stuff for lots of groups.
Cause that's what some of your peers do... I don't down vote except in rare occasions everything like this is just opinions bro and no one is right or wrong in things like this.
Gave it a shot a couple times; overall, it's super early 2000s in tone and style; seems like it's trying to hard to be serious, but not in a way that was landing for me.
This 100%. 87 got me hooked but adult me loves the perfect blend of comedy and dark themes that pop up in 2012. Mind you, not every character in 2012 is my favorite iteration but looking at each as a total package 2012 takes the cake.
Agreed like the 80s is a better kid show then the others and 2012 have by far the worst Casey in my opinion but everything else is amazing I love leatherhead and all the turtles are all different type of teenager Leo is the anima/manga and is the self righteous teenager raph is the emotional loving/ hormonal teenager Mickey is the ADHD silly teenager and Donnie is the nerdy teenager. And splinter is at his prime he’s a good father and a good master
Yes to all.
87 is for me when I need to turn my brain off and just watch some funny little turtles beat up a giant can opener and a talking brain.
03 is when I'm feeling nostalgic bc it was the first iteration that I saw that introduced me to tmnt
12 is when I want to see some funny little turtles go through their adventures that sometimes ends in my heart being ripped out
Rise is when I just really need a good laugh and those boys really do it for me.
That's true, but Rise isn't as weird with certain aspects (Ex: April) and unlike the anime, it actually has a very good storyline and fantastic animation. Give it a chance, I'm sure you'd like it.
(Then again I might be biased bc I was introduced to TMNT by Bayverse and later 2003/2012)
There were moments in Rise which made me laugh and it did have some nice action scenes. At least Splinter comes round eventually, trains the turtles and starts to care for them. Find it amusing that the guy who voiced Tiger Claw does the voice for Splinter in Rise. Hoon Lee does a really good Shredder voice, gives me the chills just hearing his voice.
I did like the call back with Donnie saying that it would've been cooler if Splinter was a Tiger or something lol. That and the fact that 2012 Splinter was the voice for the Hamato scroll ancestor.
03 always seemed like a good balance between my entry to the franchise with the 87 cartoon and some of the more mature stories the original comics tried to tell.
87 or 03 and its not even close. Cartoons today suck. Everything has that cartoon network, fairly odd parents, super square look to them. When you watch stuff like GI Joe or the real ghostbusters or TMNT or he man, it's quite clearly much, much better looking than any cartoon I can think of since like the 90s or maybe early 2000s. Everything is so samey and homogenized now.
I got a question, I grew up watching the 2003 series, and i'm a hardcore 2003s fan. I recently started watching it again and its been great.
I've been wondering though, what other series is worth watching?
I didn't like from observation how the 2012 and mayham turtles look, they feel childish and not as badass as the 2003 ones, maybe its the white eyes or so, I am not sure. This all is just from seeing pictures and some clips.
I've been thinking of watching Rise after 2003, I kind of liked the clips and pictures and the designs of the turtles, but I am wondering what more experienced turtle fans can tell me and maybe can give me some advice (:
I grew up with the 2012, and lemme tell you these turtles get pretty badass! I rewatched it recently and sometimes I had to pause it because it shocked me that much.
Rise is also really good! It is a lot more comedic, but there are some really cool moments that are really cool.
Both shows are good and I would give both of chance. If you want something more serious 2012 is better at that, but Rise is still great just less serious!
A lot of veteran TMNT fans don't like Rise because they changed quite a bit about it. They changed some tropes, some roles, and some overall character personalities (kinda). Also the story is retconned a little bit so watch out for that too.
As someone who hasn't seen any of the other TMNTs and only watched Rise. (because i was never drawn in by TMNT before but Rise had a special shine about it that I was curious about it) I would say that Rise is pretty solid on its own
Also 2012 TMNT had apparently set a really high bar that Rise wasn't able to slingshot past from what i've heard
Hey, I've watched all the TV iterations of the turtles, but grew up with 2003 (it has a special place in my heart, I adore that series). Rise is great! Allow me to ramble: It feels like a huge what if of the tmnt world. In my opinion it is 3 what ifs in 1. I can't say one of them without spoiling, but the other two are this: what if Splinter was once human, and raised the turtles while both struggling with his past and believing his boys would be safe with only some light training, and two, what if Leo grew up without the mantle of leader upon him, because by virtue of age one of his brothers became the leader? (At least, at first).
I find the second what if really interesting, especially since 2003 Leo always had the heavy weight of leader upon him. He would make cheesy jokes but tried to be calm and serious, emulating his father best he can. He had that moment of crisis in 2003 over his role as leader. Also might I point out in Same As It Never Was he totally dressed up like Neo, the nerd. He tries to be cool!
I see a lot of that in Rise Leo, but turned up because his father is not a serious, calm role model to emulate. Leo doesn't have to be strict because he's not the leader; he can relax and let his older brother take charge. But this also means he doesn't have as well of a defined role, and you can see his insecurity in that. He's still excellent at reading a scene and battle analytics, still has cheesy jokes, and still tries to be cool, but there's a different sort of spin on how he handles the world because of his lack of leader role and it's really interesting to me.
Donnie is probably the other radical difference from 2003. It's like 2003 Donnie gave up ushering his brothers around and went full mad scientist, and I am totally there for it. Very '2003 Donnie panicked and ripped the head off the robot' type vibes. April is a force of nature and Raph had to put a lid on his temper from a young age because he could literally crush his siblings. It's just a fun exploration of characters and they try and be fresh with the villains. It's not as serious as 2003 for quite a few episodes, but they're fun and by the end of the show/movie it does get pretty awesome and serious. The movie was definitely inspired by Same As It Never Was.
2012 follows more along the 2003 path, but has a sort of emo edge at times, in my opinion. It doesn't feel as mature as 2003. I'm not a huge fan of 2012 Splinter compared to 2003, some of the ways he handles issues is just not for me, especially regarding Karai and Leo. Also a certain pairing in that show makes me cringe so hard.
It's still enjoyable if you ignore those parts, though! The way they did the Kraang was interesting, and Dimension X.
I LOVE TMNT rambles haha.
I really appreciate ur effort, I think I will watch 2012 then rise, it feels like a nice slow change from '03.
Imo tho, '03 for me will forever be the best representation of my lil TMNTs.
'03 is great and you have good taste! Haha. I might be biased, though.
Just a heads up, since 2012 is edgier there's a tonal whiplash between 12 and Rise, which leans more into lighthearted.
If you don’t like MM because it looks childish, I doubt you will like Rise or 2012. Rise has some beautiful fight scenes but the overall tone is much more childish. ‘87 is what I started on but it’s not easy to watch going back. There’s some good episodes but overall, it’s cartoonish. 2012 has a bit more adult-ish tone but Mikey is very kid like. He is a bit too exaggerated sometimes. None of them are edgy like 03. Personally, I think they all have their merits and warrant some level of watching but, if being teenagers is throwing you off, you got what you want already.
I'm one of those kids introduced to the franchise by the 1987 cartoon. I eventually found my way to the Mirage comics as a teenager, and 2003 came out while I was in college. I will always love those three versions of Turtles the best, along with the 1990 movie.
I haven't really enjoyed very much since Nickelodeon bought the TMNT in 2010. But that's okay, they're making new content for the next generations of fans, and I still have all the stuff I loved to continue to enjoy.
We don't all have to like each version, we just need to understand that some of it is for each person, and some is not. :)
2012. It was the first series I watched, and I genuinely believe it was the perfect balance between everything that came before. 2003 would be the best, but if we're judging these shows fairly, that means Fast Forward and Back to the Sewer have to be included with 2003, and they really bring 2003 down. 2012 will always be my favorite.
2k3 is my childhood and I still think it’s the most accurate depiction of the turtleverse as intended by the original writers.
But Rise is my comfort show with the most creative and compelling story of any of the turtleverse.
Hard choice. Honestly depends on my mood at the time as they are all good in their own ways even the best. 87 if I need some kindless entertainment as they know they were a cartoon and just had fun with it. 2003 has excellent storytelling but gets pretty intense at times and I need to focus on other stuff at times so I can't just sit down and enjoy as easily. 2013 good mix of story and fun and I can put in most of it and not need to focus too much on it to get a understanding of what is going on and time my breaks for the big fight scenes. Rise a great mix of comedy, found family and adventure that I enjoy watching for something different than the rest in a good way. I mean I don't think they did a City at War which is covered in both 03 and 13 in different ways, and though I love it I need change to keep my story listening interest.
Once I took a look at 2018 as it's own version of turtles I absolutely loved it. Fish and ladders is still one of the best animated action sequences ever seen
It's a toss up between the 87 series and 2012. 2003 sucked, sorry. Never saw the 2018 one.
Okay - "sucked" is a bit harsh. I just personally didn't like it
I'm a '87 guy. For nostalgia reasons. Rewatched it recently, it's definately not up to par to todays standards. But it was fun nonetheless.
Designwise I also like the '07 TNMT.
03’ but 87’ and 2012 are both really foot too…. As for Rise I haven’t watched it but I have seen bits and pieces I have seen it doesn’t look like something I would be interested in
2012. Grew up with it, so there might be bias towards it, but most of the characters were very good.
Keyword being “most”. Casey was a clown who had absolutely no impact on the plot, April was a defenseless princess for most of the series and, in my eyes, Raph was way too unlikable.
Others, however, were excellent. Leo's character arc in learning to deal with responsibility might be a bit cliché, but the way it was written worked very well for his character. Splinter and Shredder were masterfully handled, in regards to both their backstory and their present-day dynamic. Mikey was hilarious, yet could actually take things seriously when push came to shove, and Rahzar still remains the quintessential “Foot Clan thug” to me.
i’m old… 87 will always win. That said, the new st movie did the best job at making them seem like teenagers. The old movies and show had them feeling more like late teens/early twenties imo.
Entertainment wise, 87 Story wise, 03
87 knew what it was and leaned into it hard. I enjoy it more as an adult for this quality than when I was a kid.
Fr whenever I need something mindless to watch when I'm feeling down I just pop on 87 and let the chaos consume me
When I do my treadmill walking, I started watching 2003 for about a season when I realized "I need to pay attention to this!"
The looks of the turtles in both are stellar - just very different takes. It then got very cartoony and then whatever the hell 2018 was.
I agree
2003
Yeah 2003 all the way
Only right answer imo
2003 & 2012
I grew up with the first 2. The 03 series is definitely my favorite
Same here. Nothing compares to it.
2012?
Me too. At first I didn't like the 2003 show because it was different from the 87 one. I remember seeing Hun and wondering where Bebop & Rocksteady were. Something about him being so neurotic sorta tickled me. lol
I wish we would get another show like 03
yeah, that would be pretty cool. Would be awesome to get an animated series set in the Ronin universe that went through the timelines. I like that TMNT can have different stuff for lots of groups.
I agree 100%. I love 2012 myself but 2018 has a killer theme ngl
Couldn’t have said it better haha!

Cause that's what some of your peers do... I don't down vote except in rare occasions everything like this is just opinions bro and no one is right or wrong in things like this.
2012 all around. Grew up with the 80s turtles, couldn't get into the 2003 series, absolutely love 2012.
why couldn’t you get into the 03 series?
Gave it a shot a couple times; overall, it's super early 2000s in tone and style; seems like it's trying to hard to be serious, but not in a way that was landing for me.

03.
2003 obvi
2003 Leo, April, and Splinter 2012 Raphael, Donnie, and Splinter 1987 Shredder All Mikey’s are my favorite though Rise is my least favorite
2003 series
87 but I’m old!
2003 for sure.
Leo: 2003 or 2012 Donnie: 2003 or Rise Raph: I like all of them equally Mickey: 2003 Splinter: 2012 Shredder: 2012 April: 2003 Casey: 2003

Honestly, I'd say Rise is just Modern '87. It doesn't take itself too seriously, it knows what it is and just has fun with its concepts.
Why would you say something so brave and yet so true
87.
2018 shredder looks like he was inspired by [aku](https://samuraijack.fandom.com/wiki/Aku)

Well yeah in 2018 Shredder is apparently just a straight up demon…no seriously I’m not joking
2003
2003
2003
2018 all the way. I love Rise to death Though I really like 2012 too
Yeah
Happy cake day
'87 all the way down!
Gonna be honest, I know this is a hot take but I genuinely love the Rise series
I haven't even seen any of Rise yet, but I definitely need to check it out eventually.
If you like anime, you’ll love Rise
The actual TMNT anime (how many people have actually seen that?) is a wild ride of nonsense.

I did like the call back with Donnie saying that it would've been cooler if Splinter was a Tiger or something lol. That and the fact that 2012 Splinter was the voice for the Hamato scroll ancestor.
1987 Raph is the best
2012
Grew up with the 2003 version, could not get into the others.
2003 all the way!! I'll check out 2012 pretty soon.
2003
2003 eaaasy
Gotta go ‘03 across the board myself
2003 is my eara.
2003
2003
I rewatch 03 every few years. It has the best storytelling by far. 87 is great to throw on in the background for fun
2003 will always be my Ninja Turtles. That show started my love for the franchise 🙂
2003 for sure, part because of the show but mostly because of the game. Absolutely adore that game!
2003
03
87 then 03

03
2003 is pinnacle peak top tier.
2003. For everything.
2003 hands down
03 always seemed like a good balance between my entry to the franchise with the 87 cartoon and some of the more mature stories the original comics tried to tell.
2003
2003, it’s the version of TMNT that I grew up with.
87 or 03 and its not even close. Cartoons today suck. Everything has that cartoon network, fairly odd parents, super square look to them. 1987... always.
Only right answer
‘03 Shredder is so bad ass
03 that’s where I grew up on
03 for literally everything but specifically Shredder on 03 just hits different. Like that laugh man terrifying.
'03 or bust, nothin' personal y'all
Rise all the way
2012 and rise
I've only seen 2012 so I don't really have much of a say but the bits and pieces I've seen of 2018 it looks absolutely epic
Grew up with 2012, got to love Rise later.
2018 was killing it. So good!
In 2012, April became Scott Pilgrim
James avery was the best shredder

2012 is legit. That first fight against shredder is absolutely amazing
2012 is a must watch. Arguably the greatest adaptation of the turtles ever.

can we all agree that rise shredder is the most HORRIFING shredder in the franchies? hes a straight demon
Definitely
dont even get me STARTED, ON THE RISE KRAANG. they were dedicated to DESTORYING theses teenagers
Terrifying. I can't believe they were allowed to do that
Yeah Rise Kranng is definitely my favorite versions of the Kranng everything just worked perfectly with the Rise version of Kranng
2003
2003 design
All of them. No matter what version they always make it an interesting banger
03 is a classic… but ‘87 April O’Neil can *get it* Also why did they make Splinter look like a furry Uncle Iroh clone in 2018 😭
2003 > all
All ‘87 but with Splinter I also include 2012.
It took Shredder 30 years to finally smile 😫
Yeah but seeing that the smiling is when he’s an actual fucking demon maybe it’s a good thing he didn’t smile before
03, and 07
1987
012 is the best none are even close
1987 for me, 2003 is a close second. What happened to shredder in 2018?
1987 all the ways
Always 87, followed by the first and second live action movies.
Definitely 1987
2003: Leonardo 1987: Donatello 2012: Raphael 1987: Michelangelo 2003: Splinter 1987: April 1987: Shredder 2003: Casey Jones
87!
1987
Where is Casey? You know the guy that's been in everything as much as the turtles
2003 and 2017
2012 for splinter, 2019 for everything else
2012 and 2018
Why does Rise Shredder look like Aku from Samurai Jack?
Wow !!! That was 2018 Schredder ?.....
2012.
Shredder just looks so funny. It's like the evolution of realizing you stubbed your toe.
2012 that's the only one I know
Why did Shredder suddenly become a robot?
2k3 is my childhood and I still think it’s the most accurate depiction of the turtleverse as intended by the original writers. But Rise is my comfort show with the most creative and compelling story of any of the turtleverse.
2012 is my favorite but I also like 2018 aswell (after I got over what they did to master splinter
I grew up on 87. Hate that my children started with 2018. 2003 was cool. Soft spot for the live action show that's not on the list.
12, easiest choice of all time
Shredder went from looking like Samurai Jack (1987 version) to looking like Aku (2018 version) in design
I'm still salty we didn't really get to see the Shredder fight in Rise 😭
18 my beloved
Fish and ladders is still one of the best animated action sequences ever seen
i actually like 2018
It's a toss up between the 87 series and 2012. 2003 sucked, sorry. Never saw the 2018 one. Okay - "sucked" is a bit harsh. I just personally didn't like it
2018, fight me
1987!!!!
Who was running the show in 2018? What the hell?
For more randomness and fun scenes I’d go with 2012. But for good action and story I’d go with 2003.
2012
I may have grown up with 2012 but I like Rise much more
2012 all the way.
87 all the way
I'm a '87 guy. For nostalgia reasons. Rewatched it recently, it's definately not up to par to todays standards. But it was fun nonetheless. Designwise I also like the '07 TNMT.

2012
2018. Fills me with joy
I didn't like 2018 at first but it really grew on me and now it's my favorite.
Donnie 2018
03’ but 87’ and 2012 are both really foot too…. As for Rise I haven’t watched it but I have seen bits and pieces I have seen it doesn’t look like something I would be interested in
1987
Grew up watching 87 as a kid, didn’t know about the 03 series as a teen, so I missed that boat - m but found and loved the 2012 series.
1984
2018, I want whatever the Design team was on when they designed Rise Shredder.
2012.
Is it just me or does the 2018 splinter look dumb as hell
Lol yea he looks like a guinea pig on acid
He is supposed to. Character development happens
rise (heavy bias)
03 for all turtles and shredder. 87 for April. 12 for splinter.
This drawing isn’t a great comparison.
87 all the way
2012. I love piebald Splinter!
2012
2012 forever.
87,12
2018 is beyond garbage
They said, without watching it
Yes
‘87 for turtles (but you can mix that with a bit of Raph from ‘03), ‘87 for April, ‘03 for splinter and shredder
2012 is the best, 2nd best in 2003
I know some will judge me but 2003 won me for 21 years *"Mutant chain reaction! Livin underground! Ninjutsu action! Its a shell of a town!"*
