My guy was up to date on his vaccines and caught “canine cough” that turned out to be pneumonia. It responded to antibiotics but it did result in three vet visits in two weeks. He went back to day care after and was fine. I called it “woofing cough.”

Tacoby17

Our dog came back with a lagging cough that is slowly disappearing from a few weeks ago. He was up to date on kennel cough.

Altruistic_Range2815

I’m sorry your doggo got sick!

Tacoby17

He is thankfully doing better, just a few weird coughs here and there.

FYI, bordetella vaccine is like the flu vaccine in humans. It only protects against certain strains. There are many different strains, so they can get one that the vaccine may have unfortunately not protected against. This happened to my pup a few years ago. She barely showed symptoms, but we got the boot from daycare for 2 weeks, just to be safe.

Not specifically related to what you're asking, but my vet stated they had not received any patients with it. I think some caution is good, but a lot of signs are pointing towards this being a bit overblown.

fozroamer

Starting with my source - my wife is a vet. Very overblown by the media, as you note. No need to worry about it. We have not changed our doggy daycare routine.

shade__thrower

I have a drop in rover instead. I haven’t done kennels, daycares, or dog parks in a month.

Ours came down with a bad cough after going to an agility trial. Both dogs are up to date on the bordetella vaccine. Both recovered after a week or so.

Lespuccino

Nobody catches anything until they do. The best way to ensure they remain healthy is to keep them at home. The risk has been made apparent- if you choose to take the risk you roll the dice. 🤷‍♂️

curly1022

We’ve sent our dog to sumner vet a few times for their daycare with zero issues

CC_206

Overblown or not, I lost a dog from a sudden illness a few years ago and I know what it’s like to see a young healthy dog get sick and die over the course of a week and I’d never risk my current dog’s life on liver a dog daycare visit no matter what. Nobody’s dog dies till they do. Why risk it? It’ll subside in a couple months.

BoonesPassPuke

I work with a vet school closely for my job. From the mouth of the director, the illness is being overblown in much the same way Covid was in the initial month or so of the pandemic. It’s not that it’s not there, but it’s at a much lower level than being portrayed and causing much less issue than being portrayed as well. For every hundred*x dogs that have it, 1 has issues. Mainly sick and old dogs. Media is using as a view driver at the moment.

CC_206

Covid that…killed a fuckton of people literally in our region first was overblown in the *first few months*? And you want me to take your advice for my dog? Ok.

BoonesPassPuke

Yes, in the initial month they estimated it to kill 10-25% of people infected. IFR. It killed somewhere just north of what the flu does to the general population and about 2.5 times that in elderly and sick folks. You can chose to not like what I said, but it’s true. The media publishes all the cases of reported sick dogs, but are not publishing anything about the 100,000’s that are and have been sick, and not having any issues. When and if every dog is to get this virus, some will die, some will get sick, and the majority will be totally fine. As with most other respiratory animal viruses. It is majorly overblown and not a threat to just about every dog. Asses if your dog has cancer or is near the back 1/4-1/5 of their life and make a decision from there.

Notorious_mmk

We send our pup to Biscuits and they're taking extra precautions so hubs and I feel comfortable still taking him there. They haven't seen any cases yet, but have been having less dogs come in and our pup is UTD on his "doggy flu" shot as well.

Altruistic_Range2815

That’s where I’m wanting to take my dog! They sound great!

ResponsibleCulture43

I can second biscuits! I took a foster dog there for specialized training while she was with us and they seemed great. I take my dog to paws play and I love them, in case you're looking for a backup.

ResponsibleCulture43

We take our pup to paws play and they're always very communicative if there's every any signs of illness in any of the dogs and have been taking it very seriously it seems like, my dog has stayed for a few days at a time multiple times in the last month and been totally good. We've actually been taking him there since they opened and he's never gotten sick, vs his old place where he'd come back with something each time.

frostybosgirl

My dog has been going to daycare no problem. They keep their facilities clean..

NameLife348
