Even better than what they asked for
Edit: after reading some other comments I guess I don't see it since I'm a noobie, but to me it looks like a really sick tattoo and a better execution than the first pic š¤·
You gotta go to people who specialize in niche stuff like this if you want quality. Asking a random a shop to do high quality work or shopping based off price will always result in disappointment
Most people think because the design seems simple with minimal shading that itās an easily done tattoo, but anything with fine lines and geometric shapes requires a specialist in those areas. Op sadly got a very wonky tattoo
Have you even looked at the honeycomb on the bottom of the tattoo?? It looks like someone tried to draw a 3d shape without knowing what 3d shading is supposed to look like š¬
They literally just copied the outline. So much so that Iām willing to bet that the artist asked if they could put their own spin on elements of the design and OP said āNo I want it as isā, bc the bad 3D shapes are directly transferred over from the design OP assumedly created
I thought the āwhat I asked for vs what I gotā was about sharing your reference/inspiration photos and the actual tattoo you got.
OP: so did you draw the tattoo?
Line work is rough on a design that requires perfect line work. The moons arenāt very circular either. Looks okay at a glance but problems start when you look at it properly. I wouldnāt return to this artist
Iāll be the oneā¦ I canāt find a single, actual straight line. Every radius is rough and every circle is worse. Its not good! Itās not even good for an apprentice! The artist is obviously not into the design or just canāt pull it off!
And those fine lines and dotsā¦ bad, bad and bad! As for the fine line trend, have you seen a tattoo after 10 or 20 years? I knowā¦ that was then, now artist are soooo much better?!? Lol! Good luck dude
I wish artists would be more open and honest about what they can actually pull off. If straight consistent lines arenāt your thing, punt to someone that can
I donāt understand the 3D effect they were trying to do with the honeycombs.
I honestly donāt hate this tattoo though. I think it looks pretty sick concept wise, I just hope they didnāt charge you an arm and a leg for it.
A note to artists of any kind: if you aren't 110% confident you can do concentric curved lines on a paid commission and your art form doesn't allow for takesie-backsies, for the love of God don't do concentric curved lines.
And *sure as hell* don't volunteer for them when they aren't part of the brief.
Itās nice. Could it have been better? Maybe. The moons are especially troublesome but I see the vibe you were going for and love the concept. This will need touching up after a few months so I would maybe look for someone who specializes in super precise fine line work to even out some of the wonky parts. Overall it looks nice though. Itās not as horrible as some people are saying.
For a tattoo like that you need a good artist. You wanted a lot of fine lines and perfect circles. Those are hard for people to pull off. I always look at their portfolio and try to see if they have done a compass š§ or something along those lines to see if they have smooth line work or wonky line work
Just from being on this sub for some time people are going to bitch and moan about how the thin lines are going to blur over time but I just want to say don't let them get to you. The only person who's opinions matter is you!
I see the point to what everyone is saying but It's not noticeable unless your staring super close. For first glance and anyone not super examining each line, I think it looks really good. But I do see ppls point, could've been better but I really like it as is.
I'm still trying to figure out what this subgenre of Reddit post is about. You asked for a cool design and got a cool design - really well done. When I saw this type of post at first I thought it was to share horror or humor stories ("I asked for this and can't believe I got this!"). Some are crazy sketches and brilliant tattoos, which is fun too. Anyway, no real point I guess but an interest variety of posts on this subreddit. And a great tattoo.
Not well done. The point of the tattoo was symmetrical angles, straight lines and exactness. None of which are in the finished product. āNo one will notice unless they look closeā this is the exact type of tattoo people get close to examine because the beauty of them lies in the fine detailing. Going for geometric tattoos is kind of elitist by nature because perfection is the point and the aesthetic the concept is predicated on. Iām sure the artist is capable of some cool drawings, but this finished product is embarrassing for the artist and the person who has to wear it for life.. itās screams āI wanted to look like I can afford an expensive tattoo without spending expensive tattoo money and I FA&FOā
Geometric tattoos are FOR TATTOO SNOBS. The goal and aesthetic behind geometric tats is āperfectionā or as close to it as achievable. Thatās as elitist as it gets.
Iām someone who would get a Pokemon tattoo from a homeboy with a tattoo gun for 40$ to help them get their start but I would never ask the same dude for a Mandala
Looks like you got what you asked for

been watching my mom tattoo since i was born and i don't even see it
never mind i see it now that's it's been pointed out
Or even better

The more you look, the worse it gets
Looks okay at first glance. Then you can see that the artist is not good : blowouts, symmetric issues, wobbly lines, different lines weight, etc
Most people think because the design seems simple with minimal shading that itās an easily done tattoo, but anything with fine lines and geometric shapes requires a specialist in those areas. Op sadly got a very wonky tattoo
I just zoomed and wow..
Itās really not that serious. Are there issues? Yes. Is it a bad tattoo? No. Itās solidly mid.
Wtf are you talking about? This looks really good. Those are really fine lines, they donāt need to look perfect under a microscope. Get a life dude

Good from far but far from good. As someone else mentioned the straight lines are super shaky.
Did you ask for no straight lines?
Is the first picture the stencil the tattoo artist put on?
Yes
I thought the āwhat I asked for vs what I gotā was about sharing your reference/inspiration photos and the actual tattoo you got. OP: so did you draw the tattoo?
Yeah I was looking for this comment. Iāve never seen someone say the stencil the artist drew is āwhat they asked forā lol.
That honeycomb is atrocious. The artist did not really understand three dimensional perspective
great idea, not the greatest execution. still looks super cool and i can tell what kind of vibes you give off from it

It aināt great
I'm sorry you wound up with chocolate chip cookies instead of moons...

The one to be an asshole about it, got it.

Oh my that line wobble though. Was dude half drunk? Cool tattoo, execution could have been much better
Some of those lines are rough
Some?
I canāt stop looking at the bottom blue line and how the gap gets so much bigger to the bottom
Itās not geometric and those imperfections would drive me absolutely insane. Epic design, awful execution

It's a great tattoo As long as you don't look at it for longer than 2 seconds š¬
They tried
The 3D honeycomb looks pretty bad imo.

Oof

Looks cool
looks great?
Literally.
Looks great
It looks amazing
Not perfect but overall very well done. Looks good.
Fine line is going to fade a ton anyways. Looks good
Absolutely stunning. The 3D effect of the blocks top left can be fixed - not a big issue at all. This is gorgeous!
Looks great
The 3D honeycomb looks really good
