You must be a relatively new player then. In version 1.0.3 the devs resprited and changed the armour sets to look like what they do now. In version 1.2 they introduced the old sprites back as the seperate "ancient" armours as more of a vanity thing. That's why they do the exact same thing. Cuz they are the exact same thing. Any ancient version of a pre hardmode armour piece is just the pre 1.0.3 sprite for the armour

I'm fully aware that's what the originals used to look like, I just think it was weird how the ancient ones are STILL just duplicates of other armor, the cobalt is a duplicate of jungle armor if I remember correctly

Yeah it makes perfect sense. They are the same armour therefore they do the same thing. It's a cool legacy thing for nostalgia not an entire new armour set. In my opinion it would be dumb if they made it do different stuff

Yeah. And once I had that I used spiky balls and molotov to kill him. It was still tough despite weapons that would normally cut him like a hot knife through water falling through the air. Ftw is awsome, I love it.

Ancient shadow armor will sometimes drop from eater of souls. Alternatively, you can get it by technically fighting, but not beating a boss by just getting one or two shadow scales to drop from the eater, then leaving the corruption so it despawns.

There are a couple ways to do this: - Firstly, given the definition of "fight" is lacking, one can simply snap off a few EoW segments and craft shadow armor - Secondly, as numerous others have explained, one can also shimmer ancient shadow armor - Thirdly, there are a plethora of glitches that allow for instant item generation (e.g. Transmutation), so if that floats your boat, you can do that as well

oh yeah on higher difficulties, eaters can drop ancient shadow pieces that you can shimmer to normal shadow armor.

As far as I know this has 2 answers depending on how you view it. Both are yes but for slightly different reasons. A: yes because if you look at the ancient shadow armor set dropping from eater of souls, and I’m pretty sure devourers too at a low drop rate, can give the set with what I think have the exact same stats with only the difference being in appearance. B: the previous answer but with the extra step that you find the shimmer biome allowing you to turn each armor piece into its non ancient counterpart.

Ancient shadow armor, yes. Regular requires shadow scales from Eater Of Worlds, although demonite can be mined pre-boss with either the shark pickaxe or platinum/gold pickaxe. Edit: Just looked around; you can shimmer ancient into normal, so that works, you just can’t craft normal pre-boss.

I don't know what was up with my luck, but each piece dropped within 15 minutes of each other and I wasn't even trying to get them.
