Thanks for sharing this info, and I'm sorry about your windshield. I was actually wondering what Tesla charged for this.

SignificantWarning5

No worries. Insurance is going to cover it less the 250 CAD deductible. Not so bad.

tsirhcho

May I ask what insurance you have? I have AllState and I need both the windshield and passenger side window replaced.

SignificantWarning5

Aviva. I’m in Quebec

classix_aemilia

Tbnk j'y va demain pour la même affaire mais pas certaine que je veux claimer les assurances, j'ai déjà eu un hit and run l'an passée

SignificantWarning5

KlutzyAd9112

ICBC just told me that they only cover half of the labor if done by Tesla themselves. If you go through one of the ICBC Tesla Certified shops they’ll cover all the labor. Might be different in different provinces.

ViperPilot2020

good lord my deductible is 1,000 so my cracked windshield is going to be 100% on me to pay for.

Johnny-Cakes

For Americans: I paid ~$700 for a windshield replacement in the US, handled by Tesla.

KGB44

Same. $1100 in San Diego. Luckily they determined it was a "Stress Crack" as there was no chipped impact, just a crack at top center of windshield that kept growing down the middle. They replaced for free after that. Might be helpful for anyone else reading this.

SirhckLondon

Can confirm that I JUST got my windshield replaced last week and it was indeed almost 1300 bucks… $1295.11 to be exact.

Johnny-Cakes

I don’t know if this will be your case as well, but as I remember it I was also quoted a figure approximately near what you’ve shared, then when it came time to pay they reduced the amount to what I posted. I believe the reason they gave was because I have Tesla Insurance I was eligible for a discount on the windshield. If anyone has a similar experience to mine and better recollection of what happened please correct me as needed.

GrapheneScene

How did you get a $1200 Tesla windshield replacement for $700? Do their prices and serivice centers vary that much?

TheSirOcelot

Go though the comprehensive portion of your auto insurance.

Torch22

This. Have to remember majority of Reddit is from outside USA.

Ryanchri

Ehh depends on the sub. Roughly half of reddit itself are Americans, and most non English speaking users tend to stick to their respective subs meaning Americans dominate English speaking sections of reddit.

BRK_B

Which US state?

Johnny-Cakes

California, in Fremont.

Itchy_Accountant1056

Same here in AZ

dumpsterfire911

$1100 in Colorado

joanfiggins

Does Safelite do Tesla repairs? I recall them being substantially cheaper than the dealer when my old car has a broken rear window.

brookhouser

Not according to the guy I just called.

Him_Jong_Un

My $100 deductible says otherwise

meepstone

In Florida it's the law that windshield replacement is free, no deductible or anything.

longboringstory

Same in Kentucky. If we didn't, half the cars in the state would be driving around with literal holes in their windshield.

Scripto23

One of many reasons I’m sure that car insurance rates in Florida are crazy high

GrapheneScene

Yep, moving out of Florida made me realize the windshield was on me…. Of course with the lower insurance premiums, it eventually washes out.

snark42

I have a high ($1000) comprehensive deductible, but a $50 glass deductible. With never having a comprehensive claim, I'm saving money is what I'm doing...

kghyr8

Same. High deductible with $0 glass.

rocker_01

Hello fellow Canuck! Does claiming this hurt your future insurance premiums? Guess it's very province dependent too

SignificantWarning5

My broker said a claim is a claim. But they said it won’t hurt as much as having a collision at fault for example, since I replaced my windshield due to a rock on the highway. She also specified that many windshield claims could hurt my file. But in general it shouldn’t be a huge increase. We’ll see next year when I renew!

Nerdballer2

Did your rates go up?

joanfiggins

Ymmv but rear window was broken twice in a previous car. I have 0 dollar deductible glass coverage. My rates never changed.insurance fully paid both times including a new windshield wiper motor and blade and new controller for the rear defroster. I had Geico and then a local insurance company. Both didn't increase the premium at all. Both of them had me go to Safelite too.

BlahblahblahLG

>Safelite thank you for posting this. I just had my rear passenger window broken and made an appointment with Safelite for tomorrow. Phew it’ll be okay. Your post here helped me

Matt_NZ

Nearly all insurance companies here in NZ replace glass with no excess and no hit to your premium.

laberdog

WTF dude? Always has been free for me covered under insurance

vendeep

depends on insurance. I have no deductible glass coverage. Any glass surface is covered (roof included).

PrimeskyLP

Way less than i expected

noblek44

$100 with auto glass Insurance

rklurfeld

In September 2022 I had my windshield replaced by Tesla. Cost of windshield was $700 and the cost of the Sealant was $25, USD.

heartfailures

thank god i have a $100 glass deductible phew

victoryboii

I just paid $800 for glass and labor in San Diego. $900 if I wanted OEM but I quickly realized this won’t be the last windshield I’ll replace. I had to go out of pocket, I reduced my deductible for the next one.

faksnima

Where did you get this done in San Diego? Which glass did you end up using?

victoryboii

PGW glass is the brand of aftermarket glass, just as good as Tesla oem but just doesn’t have the Tesla symbol. Majesty auto glass

faksnima

Hey there, thanks for the reply! Under the PGW sticker/logo, is it DOT 563? I'm in a situation where I had my rock chip repaired by a local company for $95. Then I got hit with another two days after. They are willing to reduce my $95 from a $575 + tax installation of XYG/PPG/PGW glass, which I think all falls under DOT 563. Pre 2020, reviews for DOT 563 produced glass has been garbage. I haven't seen any new reviews. Did you have any issues with your rain sensor (I know this is done via camera) or autopilot after installation? Do you have any distortions or warps in the glass? Any issue with the glass turning white during the rain? Did it fit perfectly? I should've probably just PM'd you, lol. Thank you! Edit: Sent you a chat request.

dub_soda

I worked on VW/Audis for 15 years and never replaced a windshield. In the single year I worked in a small Tesla shop we did at least 3-5 every single day. Wild

slayernfc

I live in Florida, free replacements.

How

snark42

Florida requires it be covered with comprehensive. Basically everyone with comprehensive gets (and pays for) a $0 glass deductible in Florida.

DeuceSevin

The skeptic in me is wondering if this is a great consumer protection law or something the insurance companies lobbied for to drive up premiums? Florida, so you know…

Affectionate_Rate_99

In NY, full glass coverage is optional, but the option is a pretty low cost, so we have it on all our cars. Definitely comes in handy, considering we have had 4 windshields replaced in the past 10 years. All repairs were done by Safelite with zero deductible. The most expensive was for our MB E-class. The windshield has a special sound proofing coating on it, so Safelite had to order the replacement windshield from Mercedes. The replacement cost was nearly $2k. I had asked the tech if windshields now are that expensive and he said that he's seen even more expensive. He said the most expensive windshield replacement he had seen was for a BMW 7-series and it was over $5k. Asides from the windshields replaced, my son's car just had a windshield repair a couple of weeks ago. His windshield was replaced last year and a couple of weeks ago we noticed a small little star crack on it. Safelite repaired it a couple of days later and the repair was fully covered by insurance.

[deleted]

Well, it’s Canada…so.

liuhanshu2000

Which is why I have a $50 comprehensive deductible

SignificantWarning5

My 250 deductible is the minimum. Can’t go lower unfortunately

[deleted]

Yeah that is why I am waiting to buy my third one until winter is over. These windshields are like magnets for rocks.

[deleted]

Is this through Tesla or safelite etc

SignificantWarning5

Tesla

techsupportcalling

Interesting, I made an appointment on the service app and was then informed that they don't do windshields (Oakville, ON). They referred me to a local collision place and the cost was virtually identical to yours. And the collision place was full of teslas.

SignificantWarning5

I’m in Montreal. I booked my appointment on Monday and changed it on Tuesday. They even gave me a loaner

techsupportcalling

Sounds like better service than I got. But then I'd rather they outsource it if they don't have the skill set to do it properly.

Nole-Body

I will be on windshield number 3 for my first year of ownership after it gets replaced here in the next week. Either I’m unlucky or the Model 3 has some sort of voodoo magic attraction to rocks.

hoppeeness

I am convinced it’s AP/FSD. People pay less attention to details like gravel or debris in the roads. Even 10% less attentiveness would increase what you don’t avoid. Same theory with people getting flat tires either from nails or potholes.

some_douche

Yeah at 80 mph, I can see 1 inch gray nail on the gray asphalt and avoid them easily. Those rocks that a big rig thats going 70+ miles per hour getting flipped up at me are also totally avoidable because I just swerve erratically into oncoming traffic. Let's see autopilot do that! /s

hoppeeness

It’s not nails. It just rubbish/dirt or stuff flying off cars.

dqontherun

I have a small chip outside my viewing area. I'll wait to see if it spreads and if so, get it replaced through my insurance. It's more of a hassle for me since my windshield is tinted, but it hasn't spread at all in over a month.

uxor-moecha-amans

Most insurance companies in the US would seal the chip for free.

dqontherun

They have to remove the tint to do that.

Dave_Marsh

Isn’t the film on the inside of the glass?

dqontherun

Yes, I was told by Safelite they need to remove the film to use a pressurized tool to fill the chip with resin.

Dave_Marsh

I’ve had several windshield chips repaired by Safelite over the years, and they’ve never even touched in the inside of the windshield. The windshield is two layers of glass with a sealant between the panes. My chips have never penetrated beyond the top layer.

dqontherun

Thanks for the info. I’ll have to stop in and talk to them. This was just a phone convo with some random CSR.

SignificantWarning5

Mine spread enough to reach the middle of my windshield. From the middle to the left side/border

Toastybunzz

Permatex makes a single use repair kit that's cheap and easy to use. It's a lot cheaper than waiting for it to spread.

azidesandamides

>Permatex For a little bit more money most people will fix rockchips $50 and they have better resins and tools to drill the hole. if you have a 97 corolla sure go ahead with permatex 2022 niro EV or Tesla sure... go right ahead it's your car.

doom1701

I paid $950 USD two years ago, so this is in line with that (and inflation). (Replaced at the service center because Safelite was predicting a 6 week delay in getting the windshield. And my insurance reimbursed me everything other than $50)

[deleted]

$140 through my insurance lol

and_cari

For those in the UK I was charged about £850 two years ago (London Tesla Centre)

dafazman

Its about $1700 to $2000 USD in the USA. Its free if you have a pressure crack where the crack has no rock impacts... because Tesla is well aware of the poor quality of its factory original stamped glass by SGS (Known factory defect in the glass). In the USA we can get free glass coverage with auto insurance (like in Florida) or from some providers pay a special small fee for glass coverage with no deductible and it doesn't count against you to use the insurance. If none of that is available, you can get a low COMP coverage like $100 and thats the at most out of pocket you need to spend for new glass.

Goencz

I was quoted over 1800 in Ontario. Tesla doesn’t even do it here they sent me elsewhere. I just went to a third party place and got a third party one for 1100 cash.

casmium63

I paid $670 at woodchester autoglass in Mississauga

SuperDerpHero

and this is why my insurance dropped me after needing 4 replacements in 2 cars in 18 months in AZ

Odubhlaoich

Just had mine replaced here in Texas $1194.80.

SeventyFix

Quebec pricing? I replaced mine with Tesla in Dallas a few months back. About $950 USD.

SignificantWarning5

Yeah Quebec

VANIOUS

I got quoted 745 CAD from a non tesla auto glass shop. So I'd say that's not bad at all.

SignificantWarning5

I was quoted 900+ tax from Vitroplus but since insurance was covering it, why not get the original parts

teisentraeger

I paid 1100 USD for a model y replacement in Georgia.

Akademikk

Geezzz thank god they broke mine and replaced it for free when they were fixing the defrosting of the back window 😂

[deleted]

[удалено]

SignificantWarning5

They don’t know it was covered by my insurance. As you can see in the picture it says: mode de paiement customer pay. Method of payment customer pay. Tesla here in Montreal for some reason doesn’t deal with insurance companies. I paid with my credit card and sent the bill to my insurance. They’re sending me a check.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SignificantWarning5

Yeah I see what you mean. I actually did get quoted 900 CAD from a known local chain. But he was honest with me, he said it’s not the original parts. That kinda threw me off. What if they mess up the cameras and the sensors. And since insurance was covering it, might as well get the repair done at Tesla.

ubring

Mine was $1,700

GunplaGamer

Mine was hit by rock, had to lay $1100 US upfront, got 1050 back

mmdeerblood

Which state are you in ?

Grim_Asparagus_3674

For my 21 RAV4 XSE hybrid, it cost $1500…

Suspicious-One-133

$980 for mine last year

jaredthegeek

Mine was $975 in California done by Tesla.

KingCrabSlayer

About to pickup a M3P. Haven’t even looked into this…does insurance not cover it? I’ve never had insurance not cover a cracked windshield for whatever the reason.

SignificantWarning5

Mine did

atandytor

$100 with Tesla insurance

FrdrVa

I had my M3 windshield replaced by the Tesla dealer in Richmond, Virginia for around $1,000 US.

DontDeleteMyReddit

$1,196.35 USD

TSLA-M3

50% off with Tesla Insurance :). Got mine $600

KamKorn

Yes … paid around that and received a check for that amount minus 50 bucks from my insurance.

MuchCoolerOnline

Holy shit. I paid $500 for a new windshield by Safelite and I thought that was a lot.

zwiepdoge

Pretty normal in the Netherlands for any windshield of any make (modern) car. If it was cheap, no one would ever extra insure windshield damage.

System777

Florida law allows 1 free windshield replacement per year.

BodyPossible3566

Thank you for this, took a rock on the edge of the roof glass, chip then Crack in the cold weather here in QC... shouldn't be too much more for the roof glass... Tesla in Canada is pretty good, had a Model X loaner for my last repair and Model S this time as they are replacing the front seat!
