Makes perfectly sense. 18 inch is the way to go for my winter tires. Will keep the 19 inch geminis in summer

Xcitado

👍 We put 235/55R18 on ours and switch the GUI wheel settings. We have the Martian Wheels though. Wish there were wheels that looked like Ubertines but in 18s. Ride is so much better according to wife.

BootFlop

Do you happen to have pictures? Is this a YP or LR? The reason I ask I was considering the Sailun Erange line, and that’s closest to original diameter they have for R18. It’s .2” taller than the stock 19” wheels. Have you noticed an impact on Wh/mile? Typically it’ll improve w/narrower tires (less wind drag).

I highly recommend going to Discount Tire and adding aftermarket insurance on each tire for $25. Trust me. Something happens, discount will cover it at full cost. Unless Costco covers that.

[deleted]

22 years in America .insurance in any kind, hasn’t covered anything(except traffic accident insurance) They’ll always find an excuse to get out of it.

davinmma

I’ve used discount tire insurance and they have covered it 100%. And I’ve had tires flatten on me, nails, blow outs etc. Been using them since 2016. Have NEVER denied me. In my 20+ years driving, discount has been the only vendor that nailed it with the customer service. Fantastic. I see the Costco warranty has 5 years. That’s fantastic. Then nevermind on the discount. As long as you got them covered. That’s all that matters.

thereddituser2

Did this increase your range? Or wh/mile.

lXlGame0verlXl

Just tripped 1k miles with them. With 21’ I had a 303wh/mile. Now running about 283wh/mile. weather conditions have been fairly crazy though so I certainly want to put about 5-10k before getting a solid measurement.

thereddituser2

Nice. Thanks for letting us know.

Too soon to notice. Only been a few days :)

TechRabbet

Looks nice! I put 18” to do a family road trip (4200 miles) just for the added comfort of ride. I’ve been running them on my MYP for about 30k miles now. They definitely served their purpose. Where I do agree the ride is much better than the 21”, the performance takes a significant hit. Once I wear out the AS I have on the 18”, I’ll be looking for a new set of rims probably in the 20” range. Even the 19” winter tires I have are markedly better in performance than the 18” (I.e., less swishy feel around corners). However, if I was just going for ride comfort (and life time cost), 18” is the way to go.

Poby1

How much was this and can you just go to a Discount Tire or Costco and say I want the TS5 18"?

I experience the same thing with my model X. I went 19" for my model X and it feel so much more cushion over the stock 20".

whowutwut

I got the same set!!! but on a LR and with snows tires…. I like them a lot …will be super sad when I put the Gemini’s back on in the spring …

cayman987

Sell the Gemini and buy another set of 18s!

whowutwut

Ohh… 🤔. Don’t put these ideas in my head. 😅 On a 60 mile drive it seemed the snows were only using 5% more energy so not too bad.

awrcks

Just got them in today with Falken Wild Peak tires! Pretty excited to put them on with Eibach Lift Springs

Exceptionally more comfortable. Essentially, it’s not going to change anything regarding the suspension. But it does however SIGNIFICANTLY soften the blows of road bumps. As I said in the post, both my wife and I feel it’s on par or better quality than a Camry, as just a comparison.

You got the wheels from Costco as well?

angreysquirrel6999

What tires do you have on them?

lXlGame0verlXl

Michelin pilot sport all season. 245/50 ZR18

VillageOfTheWolf

Remember if your brittle and soft asf... or drive like trash the ride is supposedly rough. 1.5 yr in with the MYP drive is smooth with the uberturbines.

swimm89

Pizza_n_noodz

Are u going to get the luxury coilovers from unplugged performance ? Heard it’s better with those 18s

lXlGame0verlXl

I’ll have to look into it

Walkingplankton

They’re like $4k 😂

Pizza_n_noodz

Looking to get the same wheels when my 20s wear out lol

UnderstandingNo5785

Aren’t they a little small? Does it affect cornering with the smaller rim?

JsPerfomance

Did you also lowered it ?

lXlGame0verlXl

Nope

JsPerfomance

VillageOfTheWolf

For a second, I thought you were driving on old school spare tires. That's how terrible they look to be with that said and everything being subjective... if you like it, I love it

Alarming_Fan_6455

Not a fan. But congrats?

Doodoonole

No one gives a shit about your opinion. Congrats?

Alarming_Fan_6455

I dunno. You responded. So you just might. Yay?

congp

Are these tires smaller than the stock tires? They seem smaller to me.

lXlGame0verlXl

Not sure what you mean by smaller. They are way thicker than the 21s.

lXlGame0verlXl

Review a direct comparison with my new against my old, yes they are indeed smaller overall

BootFlop

Shorter? By how much?

When did you originally get your MY? I'm trying to assess what suspension version you have.

lXlGame0verlXl

March 2022 MYP.

Oversoul225

First I've seen of these, and I have to say, the grey is very appealing to me. Looks great on yours!

greatauror28

Make sure the 18” wheels has the correct capacity to support the axle weight of the MY as they’re heavy vehicles. Also I would calculate the offset needed as going narrower tires affects the overall track width of the Y.

moccoo

what a steal of a deal recently found out that a full set of tires for the uberturbines was well over $2100 what did the full set of Michelin tires cost you?

lXlGame0verlXl

For 21 Inch tires $1.6k via Costco. For the 18 inch Michelin, $800 via Costco

AnnualEagle

So $800 savings per tire change… that’s like 4 tire changes to break even on the cost of the wheels and tires… if you include the original tires you’ve got to go through 5 sets of tires to break even…. Not sure how much savings there is over the life of the vehicle unless you keep your cars a very long time.

Doodoonole

It's ~1500 for the rims. So 2 tire changes would pay for it.

AnnualEagle

The TS website shows $3300 for the wheel and tire package with the Michelins. If you buy them as soon as you buy the car that’s $3300 for the first set of tires vs. $0 for the tires that come on the car already. When you replace the first set of tires if it’s $800 for the 18s then you’re at $4100 total vs. $1600 for the 21s. When you replace the second set of tires you’re at $4900 for the 18s and $3200 for the 21s. When you replace the third set of tires you’re at $5700 for the 18s and $4800 for the 21s. When you replace the fourth set of tires you’re at $6500 for the 18s and $6400 for the 21s. So even after 5 sets of tires you still haven’t broken even.

Doodoonole

Well seeing as the OP has 27k miles on the uber turbines... It's not being replaced immediately. But go ahead with your math if it makes you feel better. Lmao Here's basic math for you: He can buy new 21" tires for 1600 Or buy rims for 1600 and tires for 800. It will take him exactly 2 sets after that to break even. Did I dumb it down enough for you?

AnnualEagle

Sure… if we use your numbers and assume he moves over the TPMS sensors and so forth (rather than buying the package from TS that includes the sensors and has everything ready to snap on the car at home) and gets 27k miles out of the tires and uses the factory tires until they need to be replaced before switching to 18s then the math is: Second set of tires: $2400 for 18s vs $1600 for 21s Third set of tires: $3200 for 18s vs $3200 for 21s So even with the two changes like you say you are just breaking even after 81k miles. I can see why people want to swap to the 18s but I don’t think doing it because it will be cheaper in the long run is a valid reason unless you are keeping the car a very long time. And I think most people will want to swap to the 18s right away for the thicker sidewall and more comfort, not wait until the car has 27k miles on it.

purge00

One can usually sell the set of Uberturbines for about $2k, and these 18" wheels likely net him about 10% more efficiency compared to the stock 21" Uberturbines. Coupled with the increased comfort, it's a fairly easy choice for those who don't prefer the looks of the 21" wheels.

AnnualEagle

Yeah… I wish Tesla would just let you choose the 19s or something with the Performance model. I personally don’t want the 21s either but I also don’t want to sell the factory wheels as people tend to want the original stuff when you go to sell the car.

purge00

Same dilemma here, haha. Will probably get the Martian MW03s at 19", but dunno what to do with the stock wheels.

Zealousideal-Milk907

But you sell your OEM wheels for $2,500 bucks.

moccoo

yupp.. just checked 1.6k for Michelin Pilot All Seasons... holy

homertool

why is it lower cost over life of car? you pay for new 18” wheels, but the 18” tires are cheaper?

bawss

Are all 4 of your tires the same size and width? I ordered a LR two weeks ago specifically because I didn’t want the expense of having to change out 21in tires constantly. But after seeing a YouTube video and your post, I just may change it to a MYP and change them to 19s..

kewboo

Look really nice. Newby here, but I thought lowest you could go on the wheels for the performance Y was 19"
