The winning Dot chooses.
When I toured the stadium before it opened during the COVID season, the tour guide said the magic window for roof opening was 70-80 degrees. A narrow window. Obviously other factors are in play and I’m sure they’ve tweaked it since then.
Doing some googling and I'm seeing 65-80 and sub 50% humidity as the numbers. But in the end it's probably a human decision up to the whims of whoever's in charge of the roof
The first (and only time I’ve been to GLF, I’m from Michigan, was in a business trip in Dallas last year) the roof was open and it was honestly a great experience. Like Evan said on Sunday, the stadium feels so much bigger with the roof open
They explain it on the stadium tour of Globe Life. There’s a certain temp and humidity threshold they have to be under to open it. Our tour guide told us that when the stadium first opened they didn’t factor in for humidity and they had a ton of people slipping on the slick concrete in the walkways. Didn’t want the headache of lawsuits on their hands. I think the temp is somewhere in the 70’s and the humidity has to be fairly low.
There are specific weather conditions including humidity that determine if the roof is OK to be opened, I don't think they have been released publicly. I'm sure they would love to have the roof open and not have to pump the building full of cool air if they didn't need to.
Closed if there's any inkling of a chance of rain, or Temps above the 80 line, plus other factors like humidity, wind, air pressure, and wind direction.
Basically if it's not perfect, we won't open the roof
I’ve been twice when it was open. The first time it was way too windy and needed to be closed. The second time was last Friday. It was nice, but it was overcast the whole time so that was a bummer. I want to make it to a sunny Sunday afternoon or a sunset game at some point. I miss baseball skies!!
I guess I've never given it much thought (fan from OR). How many games has it actually been open? Based on the comments, it sounds like the cost of a retractable roof may have been a waste?
Just looking at this season, Globe Life Field has:
v Red Sox (exhibition): closed, open
v Cubs (opening series): closed, closed, closed
v Astros: open, closed, open, closed
From a financial perspective, probably a waste. From an experience perspective, hard to put a price on it
I think a lot of fans in DFW like air conditioning and being comfortable. Baseball fans will take the imperfections of the day and the experience as part of it but entertainment fans want to be comfortable. The Cowboys do the same thing.
I don’t like it and kind of wish we never got a roof.
For national broadcasts I believe it's up to MLB Officials.
I don't know anywhere that the official policy is listed though.
Edit: left my original up but I was wrong.

Broadcasts don't officially have anything to do with it. MLB rules state that if a stadium has a retractable roof, it's the sole discretion of the home team during the regular season.
I think it has to be a certain temperature as well for them to get the okay from MLB. At least that was what my tour guide mentioned when I toured the stadium
There aren't any "rules", probably not even any policies. As said by others, if it's a national broadcast it's up to MLB officials. Other than that, it's up to the home team.
Same as the balk rules
Look, you can just go up there doin’ a roof open and closed like that.

That’s what I was told on my tour as well. And once it’s open it has to stay open for the duration of the game so they err on the side of caution.
They can close it once during the game if needed. That happened on Opening Day 2023.
Wow I completely forgot about that, seems like so long ago.
They opened it the last game before the season started. Afternoon game, and sunny, but cold unless you were in the sun. It sure wasn't 70-80 that day!
The real actual rule is when I’m at the stadium, the roof is closed. Dozens of games there and we’ve never once seen it open in person.
The first (and only time I’ve been to GLF, I’m from Michigan, was in a business trip in Dallas last year) the roof was open and it was honestly a great experience. Like Evan said on Sunday, the stadium feels so much bigger with the roof open
I feel like they prefer it closed for louder crowds.

So sad because the final year at the Ballpark they were touting how frequently the roof would be open during the game countdown segment.

I remember reading this in 2020, I cannot remember where but I will look
Temp was over 75 at game time yesterday.
The rule is that if it feels like anything other than Surprise, AZ, it stays closed. Lol

Based on other comments, it sounded like it was a rare occurrence. I concur, the experience is unrivaled.
Above 80F, closed. Below 65%, closed. Above 50% humidity, closed. Also closed if the forecast for the next day breaks any of those.

All regular season games it's at the discretion of the home team per MLB ground rules
Yup, I type corrected. I bow to you're superior knowledge. ![gif](giphy|Rsp9jLIy0VZOKlZziw|downsized)
