Seen a few people mention this on Reddit, but it’s honestly not that bad. I was in Japan just before visiting Thailand, and the difference was shocking. I never really had to carry trash for a long time here. In Japan I would have to carry my trash for over an hour sometimes. Almost no bins other than 7-Eleven.
Japan’s lack of trash cans is because of terrorism as well. There was a sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway.

Same situation as in the UK. IRA started using them as bomb depositories, also left luggage lockers.
Both have largely disappeared from British transport terminals.
When you’re coming from the United States and “bins everywhere” means every 6 feet along the front of every strip mall and at the top and bottom of every escalator in every mall and coming out of parking garages at malls and… I submit that “bins everywhere” may not quite be as accurate as you think. I have yet to see a single bin at a mall in Thailand, and I’ve scoured multiple in bkk, uth, Pattaya, and so on.
Lotus Ayutthaya, Central Ayutthaya, Central Udon, Central Pattaya, Central World, Icon Siam and a few others whose names escape me atm. Would wear out my shoes before I’d find a bin, that’s a fact.
This shows up all the time and, really, I don't get it. It's not Disneyland so there's not a bin every 10 meters but they are easy to find if you look around.

No, it was terrorism related in Japan. There was a sarin gas attack by a Japanese cult.

In the US bins are colored consistently. When I first moved here I thought there weren't any, too. They just use wire frames and put a clear bag in so it blends in and you overlook it. In time, you'll know where to find them. Like others have said: every convenience store, every BTS station, every mall escalator.
No bins? There are bins, at 7/11, Lotus's and BigC, failing that, puts trash in carrier bag, takes it with me to nearest bar, buys a cold drink, leaves bag of trash on table, leaves small tip for bar, and the bar places my trash in their bin, problem solved, I haven't found a bar yet that has objected, they clearly know you have to discard it somewhere, and it's best if it's not in the street (soi), almost all hotels also have bin's in their lobbies, or outside they're back door, or behind reception, ask them if they'll put it, in the bin, for you, and they'll usually happily oblige, failing that, take it with you and place it, in the bin at your residence, it's not difficult, too many bins, means too much time spent emptying and maintaining bins 🙈
Same with Japan. Japanese are trained to take their trash with them. Ergo: streets and sidewalks so clean you can eat off of them. So, not so bad, if Thais & tourists can learn to do the same. 👍
They do that in Japan because some genius local sect decided to set-up some nerve gas attack with the gas canisters in the bins… Doesn’t mean not having trashcans is the civilized way…
Millions of people on this planet lack food and clean water or live in war torn countries under bombs, misery and rape, but your problem in life is the lack of public trash bins ! Poor you ! Better luck in your next life.
I see some Thais place their foam food container and plastic cups next to a tree trunk or in a plastic bag along the curb. Maybe this is socially acceptable since public trash bins are usually not found along sidewalks in cities.
Bin is so foreign to me. I love seeing everyone say bin. Majority of my life I've heard trash can. But I've also never left North America yet.
This post has made me feel very uncultured 😥 time to book some flights.
There's usually one outside every 7-Eleven. Otherwise it'll be just inside the door.
If only there were a lot of 7 eleven’s everywhere 🤣
Yeah right 👍 ... I can't see any 7 eleven ...... 😂
Think there’s a 7-11 for every soi dog
They have 7-11s in Thailand?
Oh yes there is
I carry my gym bag so I just stuff it all in there. If not I pocket it till I see a bin. 7-11 or mall escalators.

Yes, I read about that recently but I don’t really buy it. I think it’s mostly for economical reasons, but the attack is a good excuse to justify it.
there were no bins long before the Sarin incident
I wonder how it compares with Taiwan. This sounds the same
There used to be, then someone put bombs in them so bye-bye bins.
Same situation as in the UK. IRA started using them as bomb depositories, also left luggage lockers. Both have largely disappeared from British transport terminals.
the OG Al-Qaida
That was the dumbest reason EVER for removing the bins... They are really REALLY dumb.
Outside every 7-11, every BTS every mall at the escalators. Bins everywhere.

What malls did you go to?

I have been to all the Central and Icon Siam and they all have bins next to each escalator
I’ll come back to this thread next time I go to the mall. 😁
There are more bins than you think. Nearly every shop or food vendor has a bin.
There are plenty of bins. Go to Japan and you will experience the real no bins situation
Adapting or complaining…. Reddit was your choice

Just take a small bag and bring it home. That's what everyone in Japan does.
That is so annoying. Why do they do that? Is it because of recycling?

Do you really generate so much trash just walking about, that this has now made it to reddit?
I live in Bangkok and I see bins everywhere.

I found that a problem while I was visiting Thailand, this past February it really was annoying
They preferred not to have bombs in them. But in reality there are blue bins everywhere.

Correlation isn't causation. That's a bullshit story.
Exactly. I traveled Japan extensively pre-Sarin-gas-attack. No bins either. 😉
People can down vote me as much as they like. I know the facts, same as you do.
If the city gave out a contract to put waste bins around, the company's top people would just pocket the money and buy themselves luxury cars.
Not as annoying when you realize the true reason they did away with bins across the county.
One of the first things I noticed years ago. Still drives me crazy. I guess I took the availability of trash cans in the US for granted

Thais can get away with that but don't try it as a farang. It's littering.
The lame ass goverment is using the same lame excuse. Failed solutions for a failing state.
