There is something about flying to and landing in Thailand, walking out of the airport and it’s the combination of the warmth, smells and people. It’s instantly relaxing even before you get near a beach, have a beer and eat the amazing food.
I know that feeling exactly. The first time I traveled to Thailand I was with a friend who, in general was, very up tight. We walked out into din, tumult, people, vehicles of all types and sizes, smells and what seemed like chaos - but, it wasn’t. It was beautiful. The stress we entered with had somehow been washed away and we reflexively acquiesced to its magic - instantly.
It is special. I get to the hotel, have a swim and a beer and the weight of the world lifts. Sleep is better. And then it's the day before you leave and you start to feel a little sad
I feel like Thailand would be the last place I'd move to if I were trying to get sober. Something about tropical beaches and cheap beers makes me thirsty.
Seriously good on him though.
I love Thailand for the amazing food. Western food has been taped by corporations and is making people sick and fat. Food in Thailand is the healthiest food in the world.
Down in Ko Lanta where I got up when i wanted, a little later than planned due to following the wind the evening before, sharing stories and sinking beers with strangers from across the globe, enjoyed a coffee and a chat with the owner of my accommodation before waving bye to him and his kids as I went out for the day on my scooter, to wherever I wanted, out in the sun, with no particular place to be at all.
I agree, you get up go out and if you smell something tasty go check it out. Hear cool music, go see what’s going on. hear an interesting conversation, join in if you won’t be doing so rudely. Ask a bartender or street food vendor where they are from or why they came to Thailand. Appreciate the people and culture (working girls and homeless alike) and you will fall in love with the country
Mine was my 40th birthday night, Muay Thai at the stadium, which had free Leo all night, by the time the 4 of us left I was very drunk. 4 of us in a tuk tuk, music pumping through Bangkok then back to a bar for pina coladas.
Sort of a scene from the hangover, but I’ve never had a birthday party so it was great, everything I wanted.

I'm from Thailand. Almost killed myself there. Now I'm abroad. I guess the feeling of travelling is powerful to make us all feel different in a good way.
Is this still true? I first visited Thailand in 2004 and the word was that Chang's quality control was very poor and the alcohol percentage varied from bottle to bottle. It was known for giving terrible hangovers. Also, I don't remember it tasting the best.
But on my recent trips to Thailand, Chang tastes pretty much the same as Singha and Leo. Chang has become my go-to and I never have any I'll effects.
The alcohol level was higher than other beers but it was reduced to be in line with Leo and Singha. Chang Cold Brew is OK which they are heavily pushing.
It's not the quality, it's the cHangover.
They use a preservative (other brand would simply use more hops) that give a massive headache. If you think the headache is because of the alcohol, it's just milder with other brands.
Adding preservative to a beer like this or any beer for that matter makes no sense at all, and a quick search suggests it's a myth..once upon a time Chang was 6.4% ABV, which would cause a headache, maybe that's where the myth originated? There are other stories too it seems, like Chamg contains amphetamines.
Now I want one… there’s a high end liquor store near me in Koh Phangan maybe they have it. I found backwoods wraps there the other day.
Which seriously if anyone is traveling here from America please bring me blunt wraps I will make it worth your while
After working in the metropolitan area of BKK, I decided to retire in the quiet countryside of NE Thailand ( only 20 minutes from a regional airport, shopping mall, 4 star hotels, boutique cafes and other comforts).
Chang is the worst Thai beer, and they ain't good 😂
Beerlao is sweet nectar compared to all Thai beers, I don’t mind Singha but they are all trash compared to Beerlao
Thais try to make beers to have our own signature by using different ingredients. If you want beers that are similar to Western countries, then it's beer Lao. It's subjective. It's like saying Starbuck is better than amazon café? I think locals might disagree with that.
I don't even like beer, objectively Thai beers are NOT good.
Best country beers I've had was Club Colombia and Beer Lao. Cafe Amazon is objectively better than Starbucks both in coffee and price.
80-90% of tourists order Thai beers again.
Starbuck coffee is not bitter while amazon café has strong caffeine taste, which locals like, that's why I said it's subjective.
Literally everything. I enjoyed every minute of the 2 months I spent there (2 trips, one month each, a year apart). I would be living there now if I didn't have a dog. He is too large to travel that far with. And DONT even think about saying get rid of your dog, im not that kinda person.
Tuk Tuk ride to party at a Issan bar to the wee hours after my fill of beer Lao and sushi at a Japanese restaurant. Stoping along the way for a pot brownie for desert. Life is good.
Helped my wife fighting depression, having a decent lifestyle despite her low-class origins and building her own recycling business from scratch.
My only pride
Ate dinner with my girlfriend in Bangkok with one of her old Thai friends. They started home but we realized we were an hour+ of walking away from the hotel. She twisted her ankle while we were in a downpour, had to carry her a bit and then hitched a ride on a Tuk-Tuk. We returned wet and exhausted to the hotel. I then drank Chang as I sat on the balcony looking over the city in the pouring rain. Super cathartic and felt like a movie.
Also we went to a pingpong show and my good nature prevented me from not buying shots for girls who “hadn’t had a shot all night”. Lot more to this, but basically I had to leave before strippers became prostitutes. I realized my gf might be Bi at this time, lmao. Good times.
Been coming to Thailand since the 70’s and I’ve seen and experienced most of the tourist hotspots and had some wild times with my Thai friends but the memory of a hike up Hang Nak mountain near Au Nang, Krabi is the stand out for me. I had to pull and push my partner most of the way up, witness a French couple getting attacked by a swarm of bees, had monkeys trying to piss on me from the tree tops and remained ever mindful of the tourist brochure warning for pit vipers. But once we reached the summit, the spectacular views made the challenge well worth it. Wooden staircases were under construction back then, so its probably lost some of the nature appeal now but still a good fitness test.
Walk without destination in the alleys in Bangkok Chinatown. I found the Timo and Tintin coffe shop.

Get on a plane to Hanoi. Vietnam has so much more authenticity than Thailand it's hard to know where to start explaining it if someone hasn't been there. I love Thailand, but it is the Mexico of Asia now , everything is designed or directed towards the life of foreigners. It's very difficult to experience Thailand as a Thai culture . It's harder to find Thai food than Indian food some places.
Snorkelling at a beach off Koh Phangan, looked into a large piece of hollowed out coral and saw a blue dotted grey sting ray hiding with a tiny puffer fish!
Heard all the stories about out Chang but ended up drinking it every day for 2 weeks earlier this year and never had a bad hangover or adverse effect from it.
In fact it’s my new favourite beer and I just wish the export they sell in the UK was the same percentage alcohol.
It’s just doesn’t taste the same at all :/
You might have to ask but they are pretty widely available. Some shops keep them under the counter as they are more of a legal grey area, the plant is totally legal but "extracts" over 0.2% THC are not. I guess an argument could be made that by the time it's in a brownie or cookie, it's well under 0.2%. But somewhat grey area, which the plant isn't.
Maaan… i had it the other week Phuket.
They are easy accessible if you ask.
It fucked me up for 24h straight. For 10h i felt like im a vegetable. Then the weed shits…damn..
Lol, my first time ever. I spent the whole night having vivid dreams and laughing it was good time. The following day I was fucked for s good portion of the day, just like spaced out. Luckily I never got the shits
Man I live up country and my buddy is a retired military officer and pretty straight laced. Wouldn't smoke any weed or anything. Anyhow his girlfriend moved to a smaller town Nikom Kam Soi and he would go visit her a couple nights a week. They had like one bar in this town. In this bar he met this guy named Mak Mak is an entrepreneur of sorts farmer computer tech . Shade tree mechanic. He also makes his own Lao Khao grows his own weed and harvests honey locally, all of which are the ingredients of Lao Khao Mak. I been sober for more than 30 years so I can't verify it myself but my buddy is a believer 😁😁😁
Best thing I did was trying to solve a Thai family there many disputes amongst themselves. Just cause I wanted to eat dinner with all of them after new year. Happiest day to see them all show up and have a good night. Nice location as well baiyoke tower outside private terrace. Everyone had to bring a gift and number it. All the numbers go in to a bowl and you get a random gift. My hamburger t-shirt will be worn with pride haha.
I was able to have an incredible experience with the elephants 🐘 which are my favorite animals, I fed them, put mud on them and bathed them. Undoubtedly something I will always remember.

This is exactly the way I explain landing in Thailand, every single time.
Thailand saved my life too 🙏🏽
Thailand’s good for a second wind
Uncle was a fierce alcoholic. Should have died three times over. He moved there and spent his last 12 years happy and sober.
Sober in Thailand is a rare achievement, well done!
I feel like Thailand would be the last place I'd move to if I were trying to get sober. Something about tropical beaches and cheap beers makes me thirsty. Seriously good on him though.

That is definitively a take.
Thai food is amazing but it has a ton of sugar.
Not the healthiest in the world. But yeah food in the USA is a lot of yikes.
Lmao no
Yep, same here.
Me too.

Thank you! I did a lot of cool stuff when I was in Thailand, but I found the beauty in the simple stuff the most memorable

Seem unique to me. I would never bring a woman to thailand.
Your future wife?
I don't even/especially bring my now wife.
I recently did the same! Perfect on the beach.
chang 'o clock.
Nope, personally I drink Beer Lao. Friends don't let friends drink Chang (J/K)

Beer Lao really is the best cheap drop you can get in SEA……..
Amen brother
Chang hurts my head!
I really liked chang but I noticed they made me feel more bloated than other beers.
Thai beers are always third choice behind San Mig Lite and Tiger
Is tiger the one they also have in Sri Lanka? There’s a great beer there
Lion 🤗
Now I want one… there’s a high end liquor store near me in Koh Phangan maybe they have it. I found backwoods wraps there the other day. Which seriously if anyone is traveling here from America please bring me blunt wraps I will make it worth your while
Tiger is Malaysian, not sure about Sri Lanka
Ok. It’s a big cat of some sort Edit: LION, it’s really good anyone know if I can get it in thailand?
A nice Phillipino Beer and a Maylaysian Beer (at least by name) I would agree that those two are very good.

Thank GOD for your opinion!!!! I dont know what I'd have done without it. PLEASE continue to share your valuable wisdom
Aaah yes, Chang, made from the finest Bangkok khlong water and filtered through a katoey's underpants.
Fool of a Took. That’s Leo.

It’s either you don’t know or you are the marketing team of that err… foot washing water company.
