A lot of these are fake, I doubt this one is real, it seems too, out of pocket. A manager cant approve and remove pto after just like that, there regulations, he would have to go through HR with the employee and discuss, and regional, he can ask if the employee can come in but not force, if someone is sick he can ask if other person wants to come in but it should not be forced, atleast for all jobs I have been in... i guess things are different elsewhere. I know sometimes they force you to go in sick but PTO approved is different.
But a lot of these seen so made up and front, but oh well well never really know lol.
Well maybe if he was told he could listen with headphones *only* this would be a valid arguement, but he was specifically told he could listen to his music at a *reasonable volume* from nine to eleven. He had permission, so his issue is valid.
Damnit dont make me burn this place down.
its never the "bad guy" in these things that makes me think they are fake, unless they just take it to an absolutely absurd extreme or que up the poster for the ultimate dunk/catchphrase/pun etc.
its usually OP. they always say the dopamine releasing thing we all wish we could say but we never do because the cons outweigh the pros 99% of the time, youre not going to randomly quit because your boss asked you to come in on one holiday and upend your entire life and wellbeing. its ridiculous. unless you have an absolutely dogshit job and can easily get another one before your bills pile up youre probably not in the position to talk like that to anyone, which is why its satisfying to think you could.
in reality most people just dont have the power to do this, so its weird seeing 500 posts exactly like it every day.
that being said, i hope they are real. i hope people are taking back control over their lives and refusing to comply with bullshit demands like this.
My company recently attempted to institute a very invasive policy that a decent portion of the staff were very unhappy with. During a meeting in which it was clarified in exactly what way this policy worked. I made it incredibly clear that I would under no circumstances continue my employment with them if I was forced to abide by said policy. The threat wasn't that I would quit immediately, it was that they would be looking for someone to replace me shortly after implementing the policy. Ergo, I would find another job and leave. Fortunately for both myself, and them. The policy was never implemented, and I even got a raise a few months later. Based on the texts above. It's reasonable to assume they didn't mean immediately quiting. More that they would find alternate employment leaving the company high and dry for the coming holiday season. This has been shown to be a repost. But there hasnt been a better market for employees in probably 30-50 years. If there's ever been a time you could leave a job, and get another one quickly. It's now.
i 100% agree with all of that, this post in particular isnt that absurd but there are a lot of them out there with the classic "I QUIT" and then the manager is like "no pls. ill suck your dick pls i love you wait dont go" type of shit and its like can i sit here and say i know for a fact its fake? no. but can anyone convince me that none of them are fake? absolutely not.
that said, i encourage people to quit their jobs almost daily. job hopping is definitely the move.
Especially if it’s just a shitty job. Employers have gotten used to being able to change people’s schedules at the last minute or just jerk people around in general because they knew that most people desperately need their next paycheck.
For the time being (and I’m sure it will be short lived) employees are in a position where they can easily quit a job one day and start a new job a couple days later.
Also, one of the most awesome things about the stimulus payments that went out is that a lot of people that were just barely keeping their head above water by working multiple jobs were able to pay off some of those bills that forced them to work a second job. A lot of families (mine included) took a big chunk of that money and tucked it away for emergencies. Knowing that you can weather a missed paycheck or sudden expense is extremely liberating.
When r/antiwork skyrocketed in popularity these types of posts were every other hour it seemed. Always screamed fake to me but reddit eats them up. Bonus points if OP came back a week later with an update about how they got their new dream job making 5x as much.
Tbh, while this does seem scripted for internet points, this isn't entirely unreasonable.
There's plenty of workplaces where the environment is nice and cozy and there's little pressure due to good management and so on and so forth.
There's just as many if not more, workplaces, where this is the exact opposite. People leaving can be a vicious cycle if you can't keep them there due to shit like this.
So, IMO, this situation is entirely plausible. Maybe this person already had issues so they lined up for another job interview, after which they got accepted? They could literally just ignore the boss and move on if they already had another job lined up afterwards for them. It's not like this person is literally flipping off their boss.
The only real issue with this stance is that normally, finding a job when you don't already have one is much harder. So, if they don't already have an alternative, it's kind of not a good idea to do it openly like this, you would probably need to be more sneaky about it.
Yeah, people won't jeopardize their livelihood just because they are asked to work a holiday, but those that have savings and aren't in the risk zone would never deal with this kind of bullshit unless they were kind of tight with their manager i.e favor for a favor type of deal.
Exactly my thoughts as well. I never trust this stuff on Reddit. It's all for karma. 🤦♂️
But like you said, it would be great if it was real. More than likely it's not though.
I think everyone has worked with a guy who complains about the job and talks tough about quitting. But in the end doesn’t say anything to the boss, sucks it up and keeps plugging away. Those guys have the internet now.
That's exactly what I thought too. Reason being is that the grammar and punctuation for the bosses' second message changes. Usually people don't capitalize letters in one sentence and not capitalize them in the next, since that is usually handled by the phone's autocorrect function. They either have that turned on or turned off, but not on in one reply and off in the next.
My guess is retail or fast food. I've only ever been given this kind of crap when I was a low-skill low-pay worker. The business treats you like a disposable diaper because that's how they see you.
I'm glad it's slowly changed over time and workers are starting to push back on this nonsense. You're my employer and I'm not your slave.
Low pay workers usually have low skill managers. I know because I was a low skill
manager. Had zero training and very little experience when I started managing a shop of 30 people. I wasn’t the only manager there, or even the one with the least managerial experience. I tried my best, but I definitely sucked at it, and I made some decisions that I hated myself for and that I still cringe to think about. Never pulled any bullshit like this though. I don’t do management now
I went from being a low skilled worker to managing an office full of high skilled workers when I founded a startup with a friend (I've since left).
Imposter syndrome is real. I felt like everyone there was better than me and I had no business telling any of these people what to do. I thought none of them would want me to lead them. I learned over time though that while some people want to handle things on their own, others expect an outline to follow nomatter who you are, they don't care if you know less than them as long as you give them some direction and treat them with respect.
I did my best.
As a young Tradie trying to climb the ladder I worked my ass off with little or no recognition. Decided to just be a barely functional worker, couldn’t remember what I was told to do or finish on time, in other words about even with my peers. Less then a month later I was running a crew, after that a small job or two, then larger and larger more complex projects. Why you ask?? I was told I was just too good a worker to move up but when I slacked (and boy did I slack and sandbag!) they thought it was a good time to move me up! Did I know how to do the work? Absolutely!! Did I know how to manage 3 then up to 20-30 tradies? Hell No! Fake it until up make it, the older fellas had more than a few chuckles at my mis steps, the younger ones didn’t know the difference. It came down to just being reasonable and fair, open to changes and if you were a dick to anyone don’t be surprised we you get dicked back!
Neil Armstrong also had impostor syndrome, I'd say you're in good company. Managing the anxiety that you don't know what the hell you're doing as compared to your peers might just be like understanding that different people learn and grow at different rates, that these other people are often at different points of their career and trajectories compared to you, and that you should give yourself more credit to what you already know than you might perceive.
Personally I'd find more meaning doing something that challenges me day to day as compared to a coasty life where I do the same boring thing every single day, and that might look like a job where I put myself in those uncomfortable positions of being the dumbest guy in the room. I can say it doesn't always feel good, but at least I can convince myself I am growing somehow.
I worked at a restaurant in college and worked Christmas day my senior year. The genius of an owner scheduled one cook, one bar tender, and one server (me) to come in at 2pm. He also scheduled the restaurant to open at 2pm, so there was zero prep time - fryers and grill were cold, no ice in the bar, etc. We were practically full almost immediately because we were one of the only places open and were right across the street from the movie theater. (This was right after Avatar came out). Luckily I was able to convince my then-gf, who has previously worked there as well, to come in and help out until the next server could get there.
Mother fucker had the gaul to complain about leaving his kids on Christmas because he couldn't staff or plan his restaurant properly.
That's what I'd bet on. Fast food and chain store management are *usually* trained to not act like this. But gas stations and convenience stores are often independently owned with pretty much zero input from whatever corporation is on the place's sign.
Plenty of regular dining restaurants too. I worked in the industry for 10 years, but luckily am both skilled and don't take shit. Like "Oh, you're going to treat me like shit? I guess you can train a new guy instead of having one of your strongest people on for the dinner rush"
Fuck you where's part two where the boss begs them to 'be reasonable', grants them the day off, and asks to call/have a meeting to smooth things over?
Give it to me, I need it.
Thank unions in America for:
✅ Weekends
✅ Holiday Pay
✅ Overtime Pay
✅ Social Security
✅ Minimum Wage
✅ 8 Hour Work Day
✅ Child Labor Laws
✅ 40 Hour Work Week
✅ Collective Bargaining
✅ Workers Compensation
In addition:
Union workers on average make 30% more than non-union workers.
92% of union workers have job-related health coverage versus 68% of non-union workers.
Union workers are more likely to have guaranteed pensions than non-union workers.
Idk why you were downvoted for this comment. Unions are super important and one of the most powerful tools we have against oppression and tyranny. We need another worker’s movement.
Unions are striking in the UK because of Stagnant wages and rising costs of living.
I fucking love Unions, someone needs to stand up for the little man
I’m on the verge of walking out of my current job, my manager pulls similar things and texts us. It’s so unprofessional and I’ll leave before being forced to work on agreed upon pto. I’m planning a vacation and I’m going whether she approves it or not, but we’ll see.
The problem with most blue collar factory/manufacturers is *management* treating shop employees like they're stupid. I'm a welder and my company absolutely loves to think I'm stupid, easily replaceable and non skilled....when most welders are 100% opposite.
Management seems to think their excel skills out weigh welding, fabrication and math skills. I'm not an idiot....I just don't like to sit at a desk all day and pretend like my degree is makes me better than an extremely skilled fabricator or machinist lol.
We're not stupid, we're just tired of people acting like they're better than us because they went to college. Hell, I probably make more money than most office workers in my company. Yet we're constantly treated like children because we don't have a degree lol
I’ve declined a management position before even though it was salary and paying more that what I used to make. But I know the previous managers left because they were overworked and stressed and expected to cover shifts. Salary is good but it means you don’t get a day off anymore.
Just go. Never threaten to quit.
Inform your employer of your availability, and let them fire you if they want.
You'll gain nothing from sacrifice or argument, trust me

This really pisses me off because I'm a manager at a retail store and it seems that a lot of young kids are super quick to quit over the most minor requests and no surprise, its because this is what they expect us managers to do.
This manager is a complete shithead for denying PTO that was put in 3 weeks out. Its understandable if they ask, but requiring is total bullshit and its shit like this that causes new young employees to come to our store and quit for stupid little things.
Last week we had a new employee and at the last second, she changed her availability even though the schedule was made so my boss did the right thing and apologized but asked if she could just do these two days this week and from there on out she wouldn't schedule her for those days. She agreed so that was that...she never showed up and quit because she probably assumed my boss was a lying sack of shit who would go back on her word, which she wouldn't.
But I get why she would make that assumption because there's too many shitty managers who would do that. Fuck those people.
As a manager too, I could think of many better ways of asking/enticing the worker to come in, without threatening. Plus, Thanksgiving is almost three months away and this manager could hire and train a couple new people in that time. It has to do with respect.
Well, first, I agree with everything you said except you didn't read my post. My boss didn't fuck up at all. The new hire did by changing her availability right after the schedule was released. That's fine, we can adjust it going forward. When we asked if she'd still be okay taking them, she said yes before completely ghosting us on the day of. We didn't make her do anything and would have made the necessary adjustments if she said no. We even told her this!
She, like you, are making a huge assumption about my management team. Yeah, the pay is shit, but you of all people know we can't do anything about that. That's corporate. So we do what is in our power to make our team feel welcomed and appreciated and part of that is honoring availability and time off. This, on the other hand was totally her fault and she screwed us over that night. She didn't screw corporate over. She screwed over barely above min wage workers who need the job.
And no thanks. I don't want advice from someone who doesn't take the time to read and understand what a guy stocking shelves is going through and makes assumptions about my team who are all great people...minus one but we won't go there.
You know, they will always take advantage. My girlfriend is a person who just can not tell no. It hurt me bad to see her hurting because of exactly stuff like in your chat. I told her so many times that she just has to say no. As long as they can find a yes-man they will not look fpr another way!
Same thing with my wife. She's likely their strongest member of the team and she let's them walk all over her. I constantly remind her that she needs to stick up for herself but all I ever hear is her complaining about the new thing she has let them do to her.
It's the "standing up to the boss" part that makes people believe it's fake. Reddit is comprised almost entirely of the nonconfrontational. Whether that implies that the rest of the world is similarly spineless, or just that people can't see themselves doing something like that and thusly believe nobody else would either is anybody's guess.
"Reddit is comprised almost entirely of the nonconfrontational" based on what? lol. This isn't the 90's and early 00's where only recluse nerds frequented the internet. There's millions of people on here of all demographics and personalities.
Want a real answer?
Firstly, if it's real, including this in the original text is a very strange thing to do: "Don't be shocked if you have to come in during christmas eve and day too"
You're trying to get an employee to come in on some days they have off. Why would you "threaten" to make them come in even more? If your true end goal is to have another employee on Thanksgiving, you wouldn't even bring up Christmas.
Secondly, this line from OP is just way too justiceporn-y: "if you ask again I will not be working for you at all anymore".
It sounds like something a teenager thinks would be cool to say. Threatening your boss to quit is a surefire way to get let go. It doesn't even make sense. Them asking once is fine, but asking twice is *way over the line*?
Lastly, it seems fake because there's hundreds of exchanges like this that get posted online of which many have turned out to be fake. I get there's some people out there who would be like this, but honestly who in the world gets this confrontational with their boss over text?
I can relate to this. A place I used to work at gave me a written warning for something I said that had nothing to do with work (I'd gone out to eat with my wife, someone was being rude to a waitress and I put a post on Facebook about how people shouldn't be arseholes to the ones serving them) but a co worker starts being a c*nt to my wife, stealing chocolate from her bag while she was in the toilet, running off with her medication knowing she couldn't follow (she's a wheelchair user), chucking her hat on a ledge then telling her to stand on her wheelchair to get it back, things like that. She complained to the manager about his behaviour only to be told it's her word against his as there was no CCTV footage! Bare in mind this was a bingo hall and my wife used to sit near an emergency exit so I find it hard to believe there was no security aimed at a door. Anyway I said to an assistant manager because of all this it's either the c*nt of an employee or me. He said "don't threaten me" so I clocked out, and said I quit. I'd rather become unemployed then have anyone take the piss out of me or my family
Good on him for sticking up for himself. 90% of employers and management I’ve had will work you dry without a second thought. (Miami service industry for context)
This is more than likely rage porn. (fake)
I've worked a ton of jobs over 40 years and have never had a manager or supervisor ever communicate like this - even the ones that are terrible. If it is real, it's so out of bounds of normal that they'd quickly be replaced. If I was OP I'd call their boss and discuss the situation and tell them I'm willing to take over the supervisor position and cover those days but if not, I'm expecting the supervisor to work those days that they need coverage.
“We’re short because Sarah quit” is the problem for me. We’re short because you aren’t replacing Sarah. Then overplaying their hand bites them in ass which is pretty satisfying. Unfortunately not everyone is in a position to just tell the employer to fuck off and that’s what they count on to exploit workers.
This was me all the time at my last job but I have so much anxiety I always just did it. I ended up having a mental breakdown and quitting. No one should be treated like that.
This shit doesn’t make any sense to me.
Boss: we have a shortage of workers so I’m gonna have to force you to work even more.
Employee: I quit.
Boss: *surprised pikachu face* nobody wants to work anymore.
What's insane is you idiots believing this shit. r/antiwork is notorious for posting bullshit fake conversations like this. In fact this is probably one that's previously been put on there.
Be better.
Fuck yeah Brandon, that's hilarious! You tell that twat how it's going down if you have to work a holiday that you requested off! And go kick Sarah in the cooch for not putting in a 2 weeks notice.
Am I the only one who finds it weird that people text their managers?
I understand if you both have company phones and such, but it sounds like this isn’t the type of job which would issue them.
Don’t text your employees or employers, folks.
This sounds like an Office Space parody. "I Was Told That I Could Listen To The Radio At A Reasonable Volume, From Nine To Eleven."
"I'll burn this whole building down."

That’s a yeah, nah from me lol

i see what you did there
I just watched this movie and it’s frickin hilarious. Directed by Mike Judge too which was a pleasant surprise
Feels like someone texting himself as wish fulfillment maybe I’m just cynical

I've been offered to move into a manager position on multiple occasions and I turn them down out for probably these same reasons.
I was thinking convenience store? Not a ton of places open Christmas day.
Whomever it is, is really planning ahead for the holiday season.
Yeah, but not planning on hiring another person to replace the one that quit. Looks like the boss will be working overtime.
They have to make sure *they're* at home, with their family.
God forbid they do any real work and let their employees have days off, maybe thats why the other employee quit.
You're God damn right. This is not a pto request. This is me telling you I won't be there, figure it out.
"You should be glad I'm even giving you a heads up"
I got this bullshit at my last management job that paid $25/hr.
[удалено]
An industry in which the person with the authority must be too stupid to realize the job they're offering is not worth putting up with this shit.
I’m not even convinced it’s real tbh I know this type of shit happens but there’s zero evidence to corroborate this story. Could likely be made up
It’s called: fake screenshots to get social approval on Reddit.
Fictional text industry, very lucrative for karma
Fuck you where's part two where the boss begs them to 'be reasonable', grants them the day off, and asks to call/have a meeting to smooth things over? Give it to me, I need it.
I need it too. Especially the employees retort telling the Manager to “fuck off”.
Just make it up, I'm sure you're just as capable of imagining fantasy scenarios as OOP.
Thank unions in America for: ✅ Weekends ✅ Holiday Pay ✅ Overtime Pay ✅ Social Security ✅ Minimum Wage ✅ 8 Hour Work Day ✅ Child Labor Laws ✅ 40 Hour Work Week ✅ Collective Bargaining ✅ Workers Compensation In addition: Union workers on average make 30% more than non-union workers.
I fucking love Unions, someone needs to stand up for the little man
Good for them. I hope they get what they want or at least a reasonable compromise.
As a student, the idea of working 40 hours a week for like 40 years sounds like absolute hell. It’s crazy to me that it use to be significantly worse.
8 hour day and 40 hour week are still way too long
Bootlickers downvoting you can get fucked.
There's over two months to hire and train a new employee... is this text from this year? If so, that makes the management here even worse.

I saw it too, but not as easily.
[удалено]
Well, I'm easy and I saw it. Does that count?
saw so hard
It's worker revenge porn. People make this because everyone eats up it like it was their last meal, no matter how far they stretch the details.
I'm sure you're right.
I’m on the verge of walking out of my current job, my manager pulls similar things and texts us. It’s so unprofessional and I’ll leave before being forced to work on agreed upon pto. I’m planning a vacation and I’m going whether she approves it or not, but we’ll see.
[удалено]
Are you white collar? I do the same but I’m white collar and it seems harder to get away with this in a blue collar job.
[удалено]
Remember you read this the next time someone says "college doesn't matter".
Just say you had to drop the text feature of your phone plan cuz you couldn’t afford it

The greatest (and only?) perk of a minimum wage job is that you can quit today and have a new job at the same wage tomorrow.

[удалено]
"I need you to work on Thanksgiving." "Well, now you know what it's like to need, my dude. Cope."
"It's over two months away, are you sure you can't get someone by then?"
Antiwork power fantasy that never happened
Antiwork? Lmao, what are they, anti-money too? Who's paying for their electricity to use reddit?
I'm homeless and never used electricity
I really don't get why people always assume these are fake. I've seen plenty of bosses in the restaurant business who were just like this.
Visit /r/antiwork and you'll get some ideas.
This isn’t insane
Yeah I thought it was antiwork
You know, they will always take advantage. My girlfriend is a person who just can not tell no. It hurt me bad to see her hurting because of exactly stuff like in your chat. I told her so many times that she just has to say no. As long as they can find a yes-man they will not look fpr another way!
Same thing with my wife. She's likely their strongest member of the team and she let's them walk all over her. I constantly remind her that she needs to stick up for herself but all I ever hear is her complaining about the new thing she has let them do to her.
Updates!!!!!!
You can't have updates when it's fake
Why does everyone assume it's fake? I spent more than a decade in the restaurant business and I have met a ton of managers like this.
Firstly, if it's real, including this in the original text is a very strange thing to do: "Don't be shocked if you have to come in during christmas eve and day too" You're trying to get an employee to come in on some days they have off.
Because people are liars and this shit is free karma.
Why’s that?
Hasnt gotten around to posting them yet
And the boss doesn't care, he just moves on to the next sucker he can intimidate into working shifts they don't want to work.
And then complains on Facebook that no one wants to work anymore.
It's not Sarahs fault they're short staffed. It either the GMs fault for not hiring or the owners for not allocating funds to hire.
How is this insane? Just sounds like someone quitting their job...
Lol fake and gay
Had to double check that this wasn't r/antiwork lol
Yup, fuck that place. If they can't retain employees they don't deserve employees.
Seen few of these now. This idea of texting workers is great, because screenshots can prove the level of management arseholery.
This sub needs to figure out a way to start verifying these
AS LONG AS YOU LIVE UNDER MY ROOF YOULL ABIDE BY MY RULES

Sounds like they’ve already fucked up multiple times in the past.
what's *insane* about this? I'm sure this convo happens every day in variety of workplaces.
This is more than likely rage porn. (fake) I've worked a ton of jobs over 40 years and have never had a manager or supervisor ever communicate like this - even the ones that are terrible.
Not really seeing what's "insane" about this.
This was me all the time at my last job but I have so much anxiety I always just did it. I ended up having a mental breakdown and quitting. No one should be treated like that.
Seems staged
Someone had shitty parents.. I'm talking about the manager
Right, can’t understand that they gave their employee the green light of vacation time already. 🙄
I know a lot of redditors love to pounce on blaming parents, but... this is odd
"im not asking im telling" "because I said so" Hallmarks of bad parenting
I actually like working Thanksgiving and Christmas Day time and a half baby.
Can’t imagine why nobody wants to work for some companies /s
YES!! Good for you
"fuck around and find out"
THIS is why people are silent quitting. “Oh you’re not working hard enough? Boo you!”
"Umm... yeah... It would be great if you had those TP reports ready for me today."
r/antiwork
Yeah, easy to tell this is one of their fakes
This shit doesn’t make any sense to me. Boss: we have a shortage of workers so I’m gonna have to force you to work even more. Employee: I quit. Boss: *surprised pikachu face* nobody wants to work anymore.
What's insane is you idiots believing this shit. r/antiwork is notorious for posting bullshit fake conversations like this. In fact this is probably one that's previously been put on there. Be better.
Perfect response homie
Brandan, good for you!!!
this guy was clearly already on thin ice and kept pushing it
I wanna see the rest of this.
Complete lack of self awareness. Fool of a boss
Good for this guy
Chad move
I love that. "Sarah quit unexpectedly", well now Sarah AND I quit unexpectedly. peace out!
Swing and a miss
Love this employee
Ya’ll are so gullible
r/thathappened
So this sub is sharing fake texts from r/antiwork now?
I wonder why sarah quit?
This is so fake
This was better 3 years ago
Tell him to eat a fat bag of dicks
Now just who in the fuck do you think you are?
Fuck yeah Brandon, that's hilarious! You tell that twat how it's going down if you have to work a holiday that you requested off! And go kick Sarah in the cooch for not putting in a 2 weeks notice.
Now he has to call the next employee and tell than Sarah and Brandon quit, until he ends up calling himself.
Get fucked, boss.
Am I the only one who finds it weird that people text their managers? I understand if you both have company phones and such, but it sounds like this isn’t the type of job which would issue them. Don’t text your employees or employers, folks.

Sarah is a freakin instigator! 😆
That's how you do it, no income, but pride by the truck load.
