Yeah, we did a collab with Fast Fashion when they had one of the first crops of it and it was straight watermelon jolly rancher to me. Others got slightly nuanced notes of tangerine or white peach. I dug it but don’t think it could stand alone in a single hop beer. Just my $0.02

GhostShark

Is it similar to El Dorado? I get a lot of watermelon jolly rancher out of some lots. And I agree, good in tandem with a complimentary hop but I don’t want it all by itself

ChrisPLagerboi

Very similar to El Dorado.

BeerSux1526

I have been hearing the watermelon candy, and that just seems wild I like it. I was wondering what it would work with, if anything.

BeerSux1526

Also, nice to see another one brewer bouncing around.

ChrisPLagerboi

I think we paired it with a 2021 Citra lot (god-tier orange zest) and Amarillo. It was definitely a fruit salad of an IPA haha.

Pbr0

Did you brew this a while ago or are you purposefully using an older lot? Asking because I’m always interested to hear people’s opinions about not current crop year hop lots.

longlistofusednames

Why would older crop years be a problem? As long as the bags are unopened and had been nitrogen flushed and vacuum sealed you won’t notice a difference. The BB date is 5 years from processing. We have large breweries still taking their contracted 2018 volume. If the bags had been opened and resealed like at home brew supply shops you may not want older years.

Pbr0

They’re problems when they start to show signs of degradation, which still happens in that best by window. I think hop companies are incentivized to prolong those best by dates for their personal interest. I still have some very great 22 and 21 crops, I’m just always interested in what other people’s cut offs are and when they start to see a decline in quality. I think it varies greatly by hop company as well.

MovingGoofy

Any lead on where to buy some, are they just on spot?

I have had an American Pilsner hopped with Anchovy from Barrique Brewing in Nashville. I enjoyed the 4-pack, and ended up getting a second one. It was just a solid beer though, nothing really stood out as incredible or very unique in terms of hop flavor - more of a solid blend of noble qualities with a touch of bright fruitiness of a newer American style hop. (Just looked up beer and realized it was WP with Motueka) Also realized I just had Extra Anchovy from American Solera - no description of hop content besides Anchovy. It was meh, not a hop to be used in an IPA solo. If I were to brew a beer with it I would definitely be going for a Pilsner.

paulora

Had it there too. I thought it worked really well in a modern pilsner. Probably my favorite beer of that night. I definitely got the fruitiness: berry almost like tart blueberries and strawberry.

ChillinDylan901

Barrique is killing it with their lagers and west coast IPAs!!! I’m excited to visit them for the first time this Sunday after the TN State Championship Criterium (bicycle race). I usually go to SG, Living Waters, Yazoo, Fait la Force, etc.

TG5BBL

Barrique is legit

hot-side-aeration

Have only used a *very small* amount of it overall for one single hop batch a while. Honestly, was one of the best hops I have ever used. Definitely worth using if FF offers you some, imo. I doubt everyone will enjoy it as much as me, but if you regularly brew with hops like galaxy, peacharine, nectaron, etc then Anchovy at the very least is on par with them.

Exotic_Succotash_226

Yee in a west coast and cold IPA. Tbh, love it

HordeumVulgare72

So, wait. You're telling me it's not that this hop *tastes* like anchovies, it's that they *named* it "anchovy"? I'm on the making side, rather than the marketing side, for very good reasons, so there might well be something my brain just ain't wired to catch, here. But what the hell are they thinking??

hot-side-aeration

It's a small in-house hop breed that they sell to a small group of people. Fast Fashion brewing is connected/owned/partnered with (not sure specifically) The Masonry Pizza. So, the hop name comes from that. Not sure if it is really meant to be more than a passion project.

MisterB78

Yeah it’s terrible branding. People who see a beer labeled as “dry hopped with anchovy” will never buy it

ChrisPLagerboi

Understandable but, in my experience so far, this has not been the case. Discerning IPA drinkers see the name Anchovy and want to know what it’s about. Obviously it’s impossible to tell how well it would do if it were named something cool or metal like Hop Throat Punch or Terpine Lightning Bolt. But yeah, it’s less of an issue than you’d think.

istuntmanmike

I have an IPA w Anchovy, Simcoe and Idaho 7. Many, many people see Anchovy and say "Ew, I don't want to even try that!" I just took the hop names off of the tap board and put tasting notes, now people aren't put off by the name of the hop. While it is a novel approach to naming hops, it definitely causes issues with people who are not discerning IPA drinkers, which is the majority of my customer base. I have to explain that it's not made with fish, literally every time I mention the hop. "It's *Anchovy*, not *anchovies*!"

Cinnadillo

The name is an immediate turn off to me. if somebody told me a beer was made with the "anchovy" hop I'd wonder what kind of hipster circle of hell it manifested from and if I could burn it all down.

itchman

I tried to make an anchovy beer probably 15 years ago. It wasn’t good.

Szteto_Anztian

I had in [this](https://i.imgur.com/FANBjhi.jpeg). Kind of hard to judge the hop on its own as the kale made it pretty vegetal, but it was nice. Pretty similar to hull melon, except watermelon instead of cantaloupe to my palette.

EskimoDave

Hey a local! Too much kale for sure. Anchovy didn't seem special any way but again not the best reference point. Im not sure there is much Anchovy out there to even worry about it

oldharrymarble

I was not a fan of the smash beer. Probably shouldn't be used for bittering.

Leading-Crab-3526

FINALLY SOMEONE IS TALKING ABOUT THIS HOP!!! I’ve been wanting to try it so bad especially because it’s named anchovy 🤣🍻

rylock28

I tried a few beers with it (monkish was one), but it was from a crop 3-4 years ago when they had the wildfires. And they had a slight smoky quality to them due to that. Great hop otherwise lol
