While we're here, did anyone else listen to the audiobooks and get wildly thrown when Stephen pronounced the s in Deschain and the ch like Charlie the Choochoo? There really shouldn't be an s in there at all, des chain is grammatically incorrect. Anyway, I have a Des Ch- name, and it's pronounced Desh-, probably not the exact correct French pronunciation, but at least we dont say the s! It's his world, but I've decided he is simply wrong on that one. George Guidall's pronunciation was spot on in my American-with-Québéc roots opinion.
In one of his intros or books or something, I believe he says that part of Roland's inspiration was the eponymous Shane from the old Western, which has always solidified the pronunciation (to me) as De-Shane.
Coming from Maine it’s usually pronounced Du-Shane (duh or doo) so to hear it pronounced in a way that isn’t what I would expect king to use threw me for a loop!
Eh that's not correct though, that's just anglophones not making the distinction between des and du. When people pronounce my name "doo" I find it very annoying.
Im not great at typing phonetically, but in the audio books it’s something in between “mare-linn” and “mayer-linn”.
Personally, I read it as Mare-linn.
Same.
Piggybacking. I agree with rabbidplatypus. I favor the second. I like the way it rolls off the tongue.

I’ve heard Stephen King say it both ways and that makes it worse!

I hate how King says it like dez Chain. Deschain as in De-shane is correct and just sounds more badass/cooler.
My French is so bad. Can you phonetically spell out how it should be pronounced? Please
Like DeShane
Thank you!
Let me take a guess, is your name Deschamps?
Nope
How can he be wrong if he made up the name? This is silly.

I Just Say Merlin Lol
I always thought it was like "Mayor-lin"
I read it as a Latin spelling of Merlin- so the same as our Merlin
You're supposed to say Merlin, but I read it as Mare-lin, lol

I always read it like MARE-lin. It reminds me of the show Supernatural and the way Rowena says "FAIR-guess" for her son Fergus 😂
Muller pronounces it Mare-linn on the audiobooks. But he also pronounced Mejis like Mage-iss, and I think it’s supposed to be May-hee.
Stephen King also says Mage-iss, I believe in the introduction to wolves of the calla, where he addresses Calla being like Callahan.
King says "may-jiss".
It's basically like a Scottish or Welsh person saying Merlin.
I always assumed it was Merlin since King Arthur and the line of Eld is mentioned many times throughout the story.
