Life was so much simpler back then. These days you cant go try to drown yourself at the beach without some weirdo in red trunks trying to drag you out of the water.
These may have been members of the hopefully not prophetically named "Suicide Club":

But they may have been just another group interested in shallow water diving in homemade helmets which became popular in the depression:

I used to volunteer at a VA hospital and you’d have these old, old guys telling some really wild stories, and of course sometimes it’s all too easy to brush it off as an old man exaggerating or getting confused. “Me and the boys used to make our own diving bells from hot water heaters!” Mmm sure. Good reminder that maybe some of that was actually true.
It’s just the angle. From the front, biceps aren’t wide at all. Turn a little and then you’ll see triceps adding to the width. That’s what you see here
Man, I’m not sure it’s just the angle. The entire arm from the shoulder to the hand looks smaller in every way. The forearm is twice the size as well. The proportions are just way off.

1970s: Some teen in my neighborhood went to the lake with swim goggles and a garden hose and tried creating underwater. Obviously he went down deep enough he couldn't get the air in his lungs because of the pressure. so his next plan (he had an accomplice) involve attaching a bicycle air pump to the end of the hose to form the air into his lungs.
I know he didn't die. But I have no idea what happened to this kid. He was pretty crazy, drove like a maniac, stole stuff. He was several years older than me so I didn't know him well.
They used to run these things here in Bermuda out of Flatts; don't know if they still do lol. I'm sure they wouldn't pass any safety inspections or guidelines nowadays.
It's still out there - wow haha. I wonder if they're still using whatever equipment they had back in the 1960s, a scary thought. And yes, that always worried me, as I can see someone tripping and not being able to get back up haha.
Also, someone was operating tour boats since the 1950s which were navy surplus PT boats from World War II. A lot of fun to bomb around in as their engines were monsters as you can imagine.
Is there any source for this image? It looks like AI… Look at the arms on the first guy, legs on the second person, the spacing of the ribs on the hose on the third guy.
Yeah, so they can’t bend over to look at anything, which would be a primary reason to do this. Also suck to lose your air supply suddenly at the bottom of the lake from one wrong maneuver.
Well you will notice two glaring things in this picture, one is the air hoses, so these helmets will be constantly flooded with air. And the other is that when you are down there you will easily see a few feet in front of you because that's how windows work lol. Also think about a long cup in water upside down, you can tilt it back and forth a good degree without losing all of the air, combine that with the constant air flow from the hoses and this works actually pretty dang well. I mad one with an old water bubbler container attached to an air pump when i was a kid, it's really fun and pretty safe in shallow waters. But also this was in the old days, if you wanted to see the sea floor at all you used this.
"bye mom, me and the guys are gonna go drown at the beach"

Big government meddling in our lungs and what liquids we put there
Nannystate bs. Let a homie drown!

I can say I saw something new today. That for sure.

I thought you were quoting Men of Honor for a sec there.
What’s up with the dude on the left? His right arm is twice the size of his left! Blacksmith? Archer?
Polio. The infection. So common back then.
Hes a time traveling tennis player from the Infinite Jest timeline.
Professional meat beater.

I’m betting it’s from Polio.
Did any of them survive diving with those on? 🥺
OceanGate’s first attempts.
Number 2 is a girl…
I'm not going to gender someone 90 years after the fact, but number 2 is definitely wearing a late 20s/early 30s men's swimsuit.
That’s a man. He has a man face man arms and hands. He’s wearing a long t-shirt and Speedo …
Right? Like a girl wouldn’t show off a diving helmet she made with her friends.
And apparently a very tall one, or those are all short guys.
Ok thank you because I've been staring at the picture for like 5 minutes thinking......"four.....boys?"
Not only that, the boys are men.
Sounds like the Dating Game
Buzz, your girlfriend…woof.
Who are you, who are so wise in the ways of science?

Right? I remember seeing it in Bermuda last year advertised. I would think it’s too heavy on your head lol

The new fallout season looks great!
They're just water heaters. No one needs to heat hot water.
If they want to keep it hot they do.
Yes, there is. Same reason why you keep pushing on the accelerator in your car when you're already going the speed you want.
Three of them drowned that day
men from the 30's on top
Guy #1 right?
good way to die
Normalize swimming belts again.
Where they able to go 20,000 feet under the sea?🤔
It’s a water heater!! If the water was hot you wouldn’t need to heat it.
Count Binface's ancestors, no doubt

Looks like one girl. Also, feller on the left has a massively larger right arm.
2nd one is a guy?
Pretty sure second left is a girl btw, which is even more cool
How do they stay air tight? Seems like they are just sitting on their shoulders.
Grab any cup and hold it upside down and lower it into water, the air is trapped inside. You can't tilt the cup or the air escapes.
