I lived in Guatemala for a while as a Mormon missionary. One of the places I lived in was a little town near the Mexican border. Ironically, the town was pretty nice, but that was only because of the narcos. Most of the people were extremely poor. I met a family while I was there where the mother left her two daughters so she could go to the US to be able to feed and take care of them. She came back after about a week and told us what happened.
She had been locked in the back of a tractor-trailer with 20 or 30 other people traveling through Mexico to the border. Along the way, some people (cartel?) came along and shot up the trailer. More than half of them died. She managed to escape unscathed but had to flee back to Guatemala.
These people are risking their lives to give their children a chance at making it work. We should at the bare minimum show them basic courtesy and understanding for the situations they come from.
My Mother fled a war with me in her stomach. I was supposed to be born 2 days after she arrived to sweden, but I was kind enough to let her settle down a little over 2 weeks. Its incredible what some people can do.
Every person in a position of wealth and power salivates at the thought of having a population willing to split their rent 10 ways so they can afford the ludicrous cost of living because it's still better and less crowded than where they came from.
It's definitely not the fault of people leaving third world countries for better prospects, I'd do the same thing in their situation for the sake of myself and my family. Some governments allow this to happen to suppress wages and enrich their corporate landlord friends at the expense of people with a high standard of living.
In a perfect world the global south wouldn't be so fucked up that people had to illegally migrate en masse.

There are systems in place to make it fair and just, border hoppers make getting legal immigration harder. The direness of a situation doesn't supercede another's just because you can walk there.
The funding na recourses used to detain and hold and process all of these people when and how they are found. All of that could be used for allowing verified families from other countries.

But they’re not, and it’s a problem. 200,00-300,000 cross the border every month, most of which claim asylum and get a court date which can be in 2030 and beyond, and until then? They can go wherever.
Republicans swing to the extreme end of the spectrum by trying to demonise them while many democrat politicians haven’t seemed to see it as a priority. It’s a completely untenable situation and a humanitarian disaster.

It’s been historically a marginalised issue by the left while the right continues to demonise migrants and say we aren’t tough enough. It remains a humanitarian disaster and untenable and there’s no meaningful new progress on legislations because, as you note, the latest bill was just killed.

The NET outcome of Mexicans into the US is in the 100k/year. How many that get to stay and how many are leaving has to be accounted for. As shocking as it sounds Mexicans are also leaving the USA, willingly. Also if you account for the declining birthrate of American Citizens then the number of immigrants isn't that high after all.
That wall is honestly terrifying to see. Not like a jumpscare is level of terrifying but just in its symbolism and ominous energy. It’s something you would see in Jurassic park. I think it makes us look weak as fuck tbh for that reason
So I don't know enough full context about this video to make a definitive statement, but unless these are drug smugglers or human traffickers, they likely want to be caught by Border Patrol.
They deliberately seek out Border Patrol after crossing the border peacefully so that they can begin an asylum claim. The only ones who wouldn't are the ones you should be worried about. Basically they're coached by coyotes to say specific things that will put them in the asylum process, at which point deportation is not an option until their asylum cases are concluded.
That being said, I don't suspect this dude to be aware of this and he probably was trying to snitch.

The only thing the border patrol will do now is process them and likely informally deport them back to Mexico while their cases work through the system.

There are fewer illegal immigrants in the US now than during the Bush administration, and the "evasion" rate is now hovering in the low teens. There's a reason why Obama got the moniker "Deporter in chief," and Biden is very much following his lead.

Right, I was friends with a number of international kids at my school who had to go back when their student visas expired. If they had stayed, I imagine they would have been prosecuted in some way. Some got around it by finding employment, others didn’t.
One of my residents’ work visa expires in a few months. They have 2 more years left on the residency. It takes 2 months to renew and they would have to return home. They can’t take 8 weeks off. Not sure what will happen there

Irony is, i used to be kind of against this type of crossing, and when i say used to be im talking, 5mins before i watched this video when it was a largely abstract thing. After seeing that family and that little girl, who is my daughters age, i feel the complete opposite. We need to be helping these people, not hurting them. My heart hurts that those kids don’t have a roof over their heads, a bed to sleep in and are not sure where their next meal is going to be.

They very likely would have sought out the Border Patrol on their own. They *don't want to be illegal immigrants*, they want to be processed through the system. The system is just so outdated that getting arrested is faster than waiting for someone in immigration to start a file. That's why the US needs serious immigration reform, but the House GOP shot it down, just like they do every time. The only thing the border patrol will do now is process them and likely informally deport them back to Mexico while their cases work through the system. This is part of the reason why individual "encounters" at the border are so inflated compared to the number of illegal immigrants that actually *enter* the US. The number of that is again inflated by errors like overstaying a VISA or bureaucratic errors like giving someone an unreachable court appointment. The border patrol has gotten very good about catching people regardless. There are fewer illegal immigrants in the US now than during the Bush administration, and the "evasion" rate is now hovering in the low teens. There's a reason why Obama got the moniker "Deporter in chief," and Biden is very much following his lead.

One of my residents’ work visa expires in a few months. They have 2 more years left on the residency. It takes 2 months to renew and they would have to return home. They can’t take 8 weeks off. Not sure what will happen there
