It's not 1977. Punk is a broad spectrum, even broader influence at this point. Real punks today don't dress like "fashion magazine punk" and the real punk culture is that everyone should be free to do whatever the fluff they want. Is this guy doing it for the likes? Probably. Do you dislike likes? Probably not.
Adolescents be adolescents and grumpy old people be grumpy old people I guess.
The couple of parts I can read are the Disturbed and Filth portions, and both are from t shirts. Looks like he cut up shirts and sewed them onto some lace up pants.
I mean if he did that I am super impressed, but I know they sell stuff like this (although I've never seen something this patched).
Back iny hay-day youth I would peruse the odd goth/punk store.
I’m with you. If anything, this kid is keeping punk alive and new. If you try to gate-keep Punk you become Authority and Establishment and thus automatically disqualify yourself from Punk.
> "Posers were people who looked like punks, _but they did it for fashion_. And they were fools..."
- Stevo, SLC Punk
Feel free to choke on the irony of using that movie to quote from, too.
I’m with you. If anything, this kid is keeping punk alive and new. If you try to gate-keep Punk you become Authority and Establishment and thus automatically disqualify yourself from Punk.
It's fashion punk presented via the most popular social media using the most conformist editing.
Yeah, being punk means different things to many people but to me even the fact that they film themselves at all means that this is not real punk. I've seen normcore people more punk than this.
I kinda disagree, the punk mentality should necessitate spreading the same mindset until everyone is on the same page. I dunno if this video is doing that, but punk needs to adapt to the times. Social media is fucked up but that's the way Gen z communicates and it's a powerful thing.
-drunk old punk
Yeah I mean there have always been punks interested in being seen and getting their look just right. Doesn’t necessarily mean this guy is or is not “real” punk.
Not at all? Not even a little bit?
"...spreading the same mindset until everyone is on the same page....", "adapt to the times"!
Sounds a lot like what I said he said, but what do I know?
He doesn't say he is the author of the mindset. He specifically said he doesn't claim what the kid is represents the mindset. Only that punk is a mindset and should be spread. However people personally subscribe to it and recognize it in others is enough.
So it literally isn't anything like what you said.
I'm flummoxed. Are you reading a different comment?
He said "I disagree" to someone saying "punk influencer" is an oxymoron, and proceeded to tell us that we need punk influencers to get us all on the same page.
What could be less punk than all being on the same page?
Agree to disagree I guess. 🤷♂️
An influencer is just a modern day content creator. Saying we shouldnt have punk content creators because it might influence someon3 is like saying we shouldn't have punk music because someone might sing along.
No social movement exists in a vacuum. It is an exchange of symbols and ideals that become collectively agreed upon. The nature of punk is a mindset of anti consumerism and nonconformity. Someone isn't not punk for not adopting the symbols so long as it is from an individual desire to do so and not a capitulation to social pressure. So long as the message of noncomformity is maintained the symbols and ideas can and should be spread in ways that adapt to modern communication mediums.
If punk became about furries and unicorns as a means of establishing noncomformity that would still be punk.
I'm going to skip past the nonsensical first sentence. Before the Internet, the only "content creators" were authors, musicians, movie makers, etc. If you're going to conflate what those people do with what "influencers" do, then we're not even speaking the same language.
But after that... You said it for me.
Punk is anti-consumer.
Influencers are the face of modern consumerism.
I'll add:
Punk is anti-conformism. If you're doing exactly what someone else is doing, you ain't punk. (See below for more on this!)
Influencers are, by definition, attempting (for money) to influence others to behave as they do. It's gross, and it's 100% capitalist/consumerist/conformist garbage. (That doesn't mean I don't watch it. I just know what I'm swimming in.)
Also here's an interesting wrinkle to the discussion I just saw earlier (despite it being years old.) Check it out:
https://www.technologyreview.com/2019/02/28/136854/the-hipster-effect-why-anti-conformists-always-end-up-looking-the-same
You do bring up a good point that "influencers" in their most common form are as consumerist as they get. As far as my first sentence you say in nonsensical. It's pretty straightforward. Influencers are how social trends propagate in the modern context. If that's unintelligible to you, perhaps we are speaking a different language.
I do disagree than any act of social media influencing is inherently pro consumerism. You can be anti consumerist while using the material of consumerism to advance your objectives. Even the OG punks had to do something to make a living.
Keep in mind that a lowercase influencer just means to influence. And any art that is performative is influential by definition. It influences you to think dance and shape your view of the world.
I'll clarify that I, nor the original commenter I was or championing what the guy in the video was doing. We were only saying that to reach modern audiences you need to do so using modern channels.
Yeah man, I kinda agree too. I’m an older punker, and yeah these kids are doing their thing, but I gotta say, I like the style. Looks cool as shit.
Makes me a bit nostalgic.
I just.. I feel like we can’t judge kids on shit with social media like this. Social media didn’t exist when my mother was a punk, and it didn’t even exist yet when I was. Now it does, it’s the thing all kids have. So I don’t judge em on it, we should be grateful we didn’t have it to record everything dumb WE did.
I could talk all day about how punk clothing didn’t start in music, they grew together, and what being a “punk” was, was never JUST the green mohawk/safety pin through the nose style. Punk fashion has always changed and developed. I mean hell, adults gave me shit as a teenager, I’m not gunna give them shit for doing the same shit I did.
Used to hang out with a group of "punks" we all dressed in the uniform. I moved away for a while, grew my hair out and stopped spending as much time obsessing over clothes. Just simplified my wardrobe really, couldn't be arsed with the DIY stuff.
Immediately was condemned, teased and somewhat outcast.
"We're non-conformist, but you can only join if you're non-conformist in the same way we are." so dumb.
As a 90s gutter punk kid….I mean it may not be my flavor of “punk”. But if keeping with tradition he looks like he is doing exactly what he wants. Regardless of societal “norms” or what the “real” punks say. Pretty punk to me….
Maybe this has entered the realm of MetaPunk. What is more punk than annoying the gatekeepers of what punk is? /s
But seriously, just looks like harmless fashion cringe or cosplay that can be easily ignored.
It's cringe and the person's priorities aren't in the right place but it is punk to be fair
If you can look at Jello Biafra and Billie Joe Armstrong: they're both punk, just different flavors, styles, and generations
James Hetfield Vs Oliver Sykes
Hell, let's even call Bob Dylan alongside Jonathan Hùlten for folk music
Ngl he’s just cringe. His fit kinda hard and he ain’t hurting nobody. If you don’t think people being punk in the 70s was also cringe you’re fooling yourself.
The punkest thing you can ever do is wear whatever tf you want and not care that people think you’re posing cause we are all a bunch of gd posers anyways.
🤘
Yeah and I'd bet at some point you were there too. And that's coming from a kid that did this same kinda shit back in 88-89. A lot of kids start out this way, most grow up a little and realize putting all that shit on is kinda exhausting and mostly unnecessary. If ya dig deeper into who those bands are and what those songs are about (to the band, the crowd, and you) you can find the person that you want to be in there. Leave the gatekeeping to MAXIMUMROCKANDROLL. They've been the industry leader since I was in grade school.
Assumption is correct. I work with a bunch of kids who don’t even know who nirvana, Rolling Stones or sublime are but still rock the shirt. Let alone Conflict, Filth, Doom, etc…
King of punk not at all. Did I dress like this. Not at all. Did I listen to these bands, yes, every single one of them. Did I know people that dressed like this 100%, did I break their chops about it 100%. Did I wear patches in my clothing, yes but not like a walking billboard. Would I have a 40oz with this kid if he were of age and talk music 100%, and you best bet.. I’d break his chops.

Nope. It's dead. That all reads like cope.

Or Jojo Siwa
We stopped saying "poser" and then MGK happened.
Why not just welcome him to the scene? Kids are gonna be kids.

For as long as there’s been punk styles or any counter-culture trends, there’s always been posers.
The fact that there is a punk "uniform" tells you that it's always been posers.
All subcultures are just glorified cosplay.
It's easier than coming up with an original concept or system of belief.

Came here to say that punk has always been this
How do you know this dude is a poser. He might be about that life.
Bc he’s literally posing.
Nah dude, he's twerking to punk music. Very punk rock, indeed.
Punk started in fashion. So there is that.
That's indeed easy to forget, especially for the ones that didn't live those times (me included)
Tumor is actually a cool guy I’ve spoken with him. He made everything himself
This is what punk always was. That’s why ppl started hardcore in the early 80’s
The stillborn. I'll start a band
Puts on sunglasses They’re gone by the next shot less than a second later They do not reappear for the rest of the video Cool fashion tho!
He clearly absorbed them, you're just not punk enough for that to happen with your sunglasses!
He's having fun and doesn't give a fuck about what others think of that, seems pretty punk to me.
Na I like that guys style. But the whole aspect of flaunting it on socials isn’t in the punk ethos.
Yes, Punks are very serious about following these ‘punk rules’ xD

Very expensive punk isn’t punk.
I mean how expensive could it be the entire outfit was only like 1 square yard of material…
Not sure if it’s true or not but what I gather from other comments he made it himself instead of buying it which is a pretty big part of punk.
If so then big props
He's only one Taco Bell run away from regretting the belts!

If you’re clowning this kid because of his digs trying to prove how he isn’t “punk”. Or how you were the “real punks”, you missed the point.
Glad to see that Thompson twin is doing well tho👍
These kids today with their hair and their music

Had me scared in the beginning. I thought I was in the wrong punk sub again

I don’t know much, but I do know that this isn’t punk, and nor is it in the metaphorical way he thinks it is.
Kids got a neat style. Punk police isn’t happy in the comments though I guess. Gatekeeping losers lol.
Honestly I want these pants and a belt, how are these called?
