If you are like really new to drumming then I would suggest shelving Tool for a little bit and coming back with more experience. If you must play one of these for whatever reason, then Stinkfist is the most achievable.
Yeah, Tool is not the place to start. You need to learn to crawl before Olympic sprinting, and The Grudge is one of the hardest songs ever recorded. Looking back on the things I did wrong, you should really work on rudiments and getting the basics right first.
But when you are ready, Stinkfist is one of the more manageable tunes.
Danny says The Grudge is one of the hardest to play
Rudiments will unlock a lot of these songs, but do not put yourself on a deadline. It’s not fun to think about, but there is a very real chance you’ll NEVER be able to play some songs properly
Learn rudiments, learn how to nail simpler 4/4 grooves, and practice with a metronome. All of this is going to bring the hard stuff closer to you
Yeah, that's trying to play Polyphia songs on guitar your first few months... It's not efficient, and you're going to have an unnecessarily long and difficult time learning those songs.
Come back to Danny's stuff when you've got the basics down so that you're not struggling to deal with polyrhythms over the top of learning how to stay in time in general or learning to hit all the heads in the proper places to achieve certain sounds.
I admire that Danny is your goal, though, and if you keep working towards that, I see great talent coming from you as long as you really love playing.
I know right?! I wont be starting with Tool, its more of the inspiration, gotta learn 4/4, train the body and mind, will probably try Sublime like someone else suggested and listen to my teachers.
Can't fill a cup that is already full! I just want my cup to be Tool shaped.
Thank you for the support stranger!
If you really want to get your chops up before getting to Danny, I highly recommend old smashing pumpkins records. Jimmy Chamberlin doesn't do a lot of odd timed stuff, but he is one of the greatest of all time. He studied rudiments and jazz music heavily when he was first starting out.
Learn to walk before you try to run. Trying to learn anything by Danny, especially as a beginner, is going to be incredibly difficult so learn the basics and fundamentals first before anything else.
I have been playing for 30 years on and off and can now only just get through schism, ticks and leeches and a couple more (and it's still not perfect). I don't want to discourage you, but it's complex music to play.

Nice, thank you for the insight, I shall hold my horses!
I can’t believe this needed to be said, lol
Like, maybe start with Mary Had a Little Lamb.
This is good advice, maybe start with some AC/DC. I played for a couple years and could barely make it through Stinkfist.
I've been playing for 42 years and can't play but a few seconds of a few songs.
This is like a post on r/Primus asking what songs to learn on bass for a new player in 6 months

Yep, and some of those needed rudiments aren't all that rudimentary lol
That's for sure.
Pneuma or The Grudge. But not today
Rudiments

Thank you! Im trying to think of short, middle and long term goals. wont hold a grudge to the grudge being boss level
Smoke on the water..Duh!!!

AC/DC
When I learned about that I couldnt stop thinking about it for weeks...
What?
Every song is the same maybe?
Lol more or less
You probably want to start with stuff off of Opiate and Undertow or else you're gonna learn to sink before you learn to swim.
Yep. Learning to swim is when you get to ÆNIMA
Don’t focus on plying note for note- have fun and interpret the music yourself. Parabola is a good place to start when you have some 4/4 beats down
Uuuu good tip good tip, Parabola is so fucking good
Rosetta Stoned should be just fine. Learned it my first week of drumming!
TY!
The main pattern of Reflection is tricky but easy enough
Noted!
First song I learned on drums was Wrong Way by Sublime.
Duuuuude sublime is such a good ideaaaaa fuck yesss
Ticks and Leaches
That one sounds so fuuuun, bet it will take a while to build the stamina for the whole thing XD
Oh my sweet summer child. The stamina is the easy part. https://youtu.be/gOLIaJrXiew?si=tcaKJDU5TZasbToL
Sober , other than like 2 fills ,song is rather easy as it reuses parts
That's great to hear, it's one of my favs
Something by the Ramones.
Short and sweet. Love it, TY!

Flood is fairly easy compared to Danny's work. I learned it about a year into my drumming training.
Thank you!
Focus on learning the basics. Also, it’s best to decide on your own what you think you should learn when that time comes.
The Grudge is super duper advanced. I'd suggest a simple version of Stinkfist to learn. src: am drummer
Gotcha! TY this is the kind of detail Im looking for
7empest
Heart of the Sunrise
War pigs
Try Metallica. Learn one song, you’ve learned them all. For the record, I fucking love Metallica.

Try one of their covers like "no quarter" or "you lied". However, they both will be pretty brutal to learn for a beginner.
pneuma 😈 just kidding try something easier like Jimmy perhaps?
