Showed the snap-on guy, thinking I might get some crazy reaction cause he was younger.. Nope, he said, "Can't do it, but I can take a few dollars off a new one."
"Nah, I'll keep using a square bit to change the settings."
I told the Matco guy in passing, and he was like, "Let me borrow it, and I'll see if one of my buddies can repair it.
The next week, he came in, and it was fully functioning. It is still one of my favorite tools to this day cause it was a gift and it's smaller for tighter spaces.

Cold forging high-grade steel is VERY difficult. Low carbon mild steel when cold is pretty damn tough to do anything with hand forging, and you cant even make an effective hobby grade auto tool with it. High carbon, chrome vanadium, high alloy steel can't even be dented by hand. It requires heavy machinery just to do the work, and the dies required to get the right shape tend to wear out quickly. Even hot forging is tough with this material.
Cold forging introduces internal stresses that act in tension to make the tool stiffer than if it were hot forged; good for tools but not for other things.
Diesel mechanic here. Everything is bigger in this world nuts and can get as big as your average arm. The torque Spec tractor trailer wheels alone is 500 ft lbs. High quality tools make the job easier and faster. And easier and faster typically mean more $$$ in your pocket.
I would assume the reason not everything is cold forged is the same for any other industry in our society: it costs more upfront to make better quality things and you’ll make more money over time selling shitty products anyways. Snap on probably doesn’t have anywhere near the amount of repeat customers as craftsman or dewalt.

Well, Snappy's profit margins have gotta be in the multiple hundred percentage range, based on what they normally charge. They're probably still making a pretty normal amount of per-unit profit for any other tool company, selling at 1/4 their previous price.
Company I work for pays \~$3000 a season to rent a $2000 quicky saw. Then half of them get stolen, so we probably end up paying for the whole saw again. We rent about 5 of them a season.
A lot of our shit is old and has one foot in the grave, but we'll spend thousands extra on renting quicky saws for no good reason.
The highest markup I saw was on this tiny set screw that was almost impossible to find anywhere else, a local business used about 30k of them a month, and it had a 1500% markup, cost was like 1.3ish cents, sold for 20 cents a piece retail, negotiated price was 12 cents a piece.

I was an Army aircraft Mechanic with proto tools back in the late 2000’s, the proto stuff was SHIT. It was constantly broken and took forever to get replacements. I don’t know about the snap-on the army ordered but I’ve been using the same snap on stuff in my personal box for a decade and other than the odd ratchet rebuild or rounded Allen, the stuff has been extremely durable. I once went through 3 proto ratchets in a single deployment, so I don’t think highly of them.
Snapon stuff grows legs. Gets worse once it’s deployed bc it “gets lost in the sand”. I used to sell tool kits to the military and was told by many contracting officers to offer anything other than snapon when the prints say “or equivalent” otherwise it will get passed over for consideration.

You can’t specifically state “snap on”, it has to describe the tool in detail.
Odds are, most of those contracts are “lowest price technically acceptable”. So as long as it meets the buy American act and other laws and regulations, it won’t matter the brand. And no KO (contracting officer) is going to file a justification and approval to purchase just snap-on exclusively as that’s an easy way to get an award or solicitation protested.

Agree with everything you said except for one clarification. Socom KO’s almost always file the sole source J&A to justify the name brand (snapon, etc) when requested by their customers because sometimes the “or equivalent” just isn’t up to terms of quality when buying LPTA.

Just a 5 stage cart, air impact driver, set of sockets for 1/2" and 3/8ths, pliers and screwdrivers, a master funnel cost me 466 from Harbour freight. And I still feel like I'm just barely scrapping by where tools are concerned. Matco ran me my first week for a digital psi Guage, tread depth Guage, brake depth guage, filter clamp, and pen light for relatively the same price. All in all avoid the tool trucks if you can. That case full of all that for 120 is a great find, those tools will last longer than you and I. Better to have and not need than to need and not have. Trust me

If I can sell this for (let's say) $1000. Would I pay $1000 to buy this (if I didn't already have it)? If the answer is "no", sell it. If the answer is "yes", keep it.

The ash tray doesn’t cost $10k. The government contractor with people who are cleared to look at plans for said aircraft, and the manufacturers that are cleared, and the suppliers that are cleared, that whole process is $10k. Cleared civilian personnel don’t come cheap.
I’ll give you an example. One day, the lock broke to the secure room we worked out of. We all had to stay behind to safeguard the room. The locksmith charged $4k to come and replace the lock. Obviously, the lock didn’t cost $4k, but his top secret clearance did.
We've had stuff like this stolen by airline baggage handlers when our mechanics fly commercial. It's a whole process getting the airline to reimburse the military. Non-zero chance this kit was stolen.

I buy stuff all the time from govplanet. Individual locations are hit and miss. Chambersburg and Nevada are the most organized and easiest to deal with. Have picked up at about 8 locations.
Because that's how auctions work. Op got lucky and none of the people bidding were that excited about tools to jack up the price. Happens all the time. I've gotten great deals at auctions just because the crowd was old or has very specific interests and didn't give a shit about what I was bidding on.

It's a General Mechanics Tool kit. Would be issued to any of the Army 63 series MOS's - Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic, Heavy Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic, etc., as well as any other MOS doing vehicle maintenance.
I don't remember exactly when it happened, but I'm pretty sure they went from the 63 series to 91 sometime between 2008 and 2010. I remember they condensed the Sierras and Bravos together into all wheel vehicle mechanics instead of light and heavy.

Well, skimpy until I had to drag that, my kit bag, my 240H, 400-1000rds of ammo, my ALSE gear, and the log book (laptop/case) to the aircraft by myself.
This made me laugh thinking back to deploying to the Gulf in 1990.
Had my tool box, two foot lockers full of spare parts, my duffle, ruck, lbe, flack vest, helmet, protective mask, rifle, an M2 barrel and four sets of night vision googles. Was able to put the tools, spares parts and my duffle on a pallet, but everything else I had to keep with me. Climbing the ladder on a C5 up to the passenger compartment with that shit was a nightmare. Then sitting in a seat designed for a toddler for 12 hours with all that stuff made it the worst flight of my life. On top of that, the plane was loaded front to back with munitions; mostly small arms and land mines. If we had crashed the whole plane would have just been vaporized.
Was with the 101st ABN, 2nd BCT advanced party. I had just PCS'd into the unit a week before. Nothing like getting settled into a new unit by deploying by myself. The rest of the battalion (and my shop) didn't show up for another three weeks.
I went from Basic to AIT to Germany to Iraq. Got there in January 2004, so I missed most of the deployment, but then got hit with the extension.
I reenlisted to GTFO of Ft. Drum. I got Ft. Lewis, but they were also mid-deployment. I barely got my HHG in storage before my boots were back on the ground.
Fortunately for me, all I had was two duffels, and a bugout bag. Aviation had its perks.
The only time I got to ride along in strat air was for training. The Air Force politely told my unit they would not loan us C-17s to fly to JRTC. I may have mentioned to my XO that the Russians were leasing AN-124s… Lo and behold, that actually happened. 5 Blackhawks and half the tool room in each. The passenger compartment in those things was insanely cold. I had winter gear on and a blanket and it was too cold to sleep. 🥶
That's laser cut foam to keep track of your tools, so nothing goes missing. I would not remove it since it has function and value. Very expensive to buy or to get done custom

Just a 5 stage cart, air impact driver, set of sockets for 1/2" and 3/8ths, pliers and screwdrivers, a master funnel cost me 466 from Harbour freight. And I still feel like I'm just barely scrapping by where tools are concerned. Matco ran me my first week for a digital psi Guage, tread depth Guage, brake depth guage, filter clamp, and pen light for relatively the same price. All in all avoid the tool trucks if you can. That case full of all that for 120 is a great find, those tools will last longer than you and I. Better to have and not need than to need and not have. Trust me
He could sell it for way more though and buy stuff he needs or even buy the same tools different brand for 1/4 the price.
My rule of thumb for items that I consider selling: If I can sell this for (let's say) $1000. Would I pay $1000 to buy this (if I didn't already have it)? If the answer is "no", sell it. If the answer is "yes", keep it.

I'd never get rid of it. I've had one for years, easy to transport in a trailer or the back of the truck and you have a little bit of everything you need. I used to bring mine in the race trailer.

The ash tray doesn’t cost $10k. The government contractor with people who are cleared to look at plans for said aircraft, and the manufacturers that are cleared, and the suppliers that are cleared, that whole process is $10k. Cleared civilian personnel don’t come cheap. I’ll give you an example. One day, the lock broke to the secure room we worked out of. We all had to stay behind to safeguard the room. The locksmith charged $4k to come and replace the lock. Obviously, the lock didn’t cost $4k, but his top secret clearance did.

I'm old. It was 63 series in the 90's. I was a 45B, which is now 91F. Don't know why they changed them all, but they did.
I don't remember exactly when it happened, but I'm pretty sure they went from the 63 series to 91 sometime between 2008 and 2010. I remember they condensed the Sierras and Bravos together into all wheel vehicle mechanics instead of light and heavy. My guess is a full bird put together an elaborate power point presentation that would last several days on changing things up so he could get his star.
I enlisted in ‘09 and they told me it had just been changed. Not 100% sure, but some of my paperwork had 63B on it and the rest had 91B. So maybe ‘08 at the earliest?
Dang, I was a 67T/15T, my toolkit was a skimpy little thing compared to that. Well, skimpy until I had to drag that, my kit bag, my 240H, 400-1000rds of ammo, my ALSE gear, and the log book (laptop/case) to the aircraft by myself.
This made me laugh thinking back to deploying to the Gulf in 1990. Had my tool box, two foot lockers full of spare parts, my duffle, ruck, lbe, flack vest, helmet, protective mask, rifle, an M2 barrel and four sets of night vision googles. Was able to put the tools, spares parts and my duffle on a pallet, but everything else I had to keep with me. Climbing the ladder on a C5 up to the passenger compartment with that shit was a nightmare. Then sitting in a seat designed for a toddler for 12 hours with all that stuff made it the worst flight of my life. On top of that, the plane was loaded front to back with munitions; mostly small arms and land mines. If we had crashed the whole plane would have just been vaporized. Was with the 101st ABN, 2nd BCT advanced party. I had just PCS'd into the unit a week before. Nothing like getting settled into a new unit by deploying by myself. The rest of the battalion (and my shop) didn't show up for another three weeks.
I went from Basic to AIT to Germany to Iraq. Got there in January 2004, so I missed most of the deployment, but then got hit with the extension. I reenlisted to GTFO of Ft. Drum. I got Ft. Lewis, but they were also mid-deployment. I barely got my HHG in storage before my boots were back on the ground. Fortunately for me, all I had was two duffels, and a bugout bag. Aviation had its perks. The only time I got to ride along in strat air was for training. The Air Force politely told my unit they would not loan us C-17s to fly to JRTC. I may have mentioned to my XO that the Russians were leasing AN-124s… Lo and behold, that actually happened. 5 Blackhawks and half the tool room in each. The passenger compartment in those things was insanely cold. I had winter gear on and a blanket and it was too cold to sleep. 🥶
C-141 was like that too. Did a training mission in Russia back in ‘94. The plane ride there was the coldest I’d ever been.

That's laser cut foam to keep track of your tools, so nothing goes missing. I would not remove it since it has function and value. Very expensive to buy or to get done custom
I designed the diagrams for these. A lot of the cost is in the design and engineering to get all of those tools to fit securely in one box. I would love to have one toolbox with a place for everything and everything in its place. They were definitely over $5k new, but they run about 10% of that used. If you piece the sets out on eBay you should be able to make over a grand I'd think. I've sold several wrench and socket sets and each one goes for $150-$200. The ratcheting wrench sets should pull $300 each easy. Dunno about the screwdrivers and adjustables and all that but there's no way I'd let this box go for $500-800. I'd buy it for that!
