Agreed. Some great picks here. Squarepusher and Autechre take me back. No RDJ though?

theugliestgreen

Aphex is overrated as hell, I like some of his music but I feel as if the only reason he's so popular is because he was the first and most prolific IDM guy. Selected Ambient Works is boring, I Care Because You Do is 3/5ths filler, Come To Daddy is just not a very good song.

majortom12

Hard disagree - also impossible to imagine Oneohtrix Point Never, Wax Stag, Dorian Concept, Bibio, Prefuse 73, most of Warp Records in general even existing without Aphex Twin creating an entire genre.

theugliestgreen

That's what I'm trying to say - he invented the genre, but he is very far from the best at it.

philbill2112

I'd have to disagree as well, but each to their own I guess. SAW has some of my favourite electronic songs ever on it and Come To Daddy is a classic. Have you given the Richard D James record a spin? Or Drukqs? Some great tunes on those. The piano pieces on Drukqs are gorgeous. Also, if you like IDM you might like Venetian Snares. Some of his stuff is pretty wild. Edit - just noticed he's on your list already!

reallyfunnycjnot

I agree with the points u stated but some rdj projects are really nice i think (Syro, Druqks, the RDJ album)

Indeed, check out Arca's music if you haven't already. Her Mutant era comes highly recommended (given your taste). the Entrañas mixtape in particular i feel you'd dig alot, plus it's pretty short jus in case you wanted a small taste of Mutant's sound. Doopee time (1995) is another you should check out. If you liked the more Loungey- Doo Wop aspects of California and you wanted more of that but more J-poppy and in the form a tongue n cheek concept album about a love sick alien going through a break up, this is the one. Also real creative production and if you're into deep intricate samples this is a must listen. It's also very weird and really experimental, so that's a plus Also Brotherhood of the Bomb (2001) by Techno Animal if you feelin like getting fuggin your face melted off or sum idk (also very bassy 🔊)

theugliestgreen

Will pass on Arca. Absolutely cannot stand vocals in my electronic music, and I have nothing but disdain for that glossy, hyperpop-y(?) sound popularized by SOPHIE et. al.. And that cover art... gross. I keep seeing Doopee Time come up every now and then, but the whole "J-pop" and "lovesick alien" thing sounds like a big turn-off to me. I dont like romantic lyrics/subject matter in music. I guess that makes me an incel? Lol

TheGreatPigInTheSky

Well good luck for you because Mutant era Arca is very much not hyper pop at all, very, glitchy, epic, frantic, chaotic, freakish, and genuinely unnerving IDM/Glitch/Club is what ud describe this era. Most of the vocals are hardly even distinguishable because how distorted n fucked up they are. Pls don't pass this up, early Arca is something completely different. Though you may not enjoy Doopee Time I'd atleast recommend their producer, Yann Tomita. His work is genius and comes highly recommended, seeing how you like Ground-Zero an sample based music, you should def check out his solo work, he's also iconic for working with the Steel Drum, expect to hear that frequently. His album with Seiko Ito is Japanese Hip-hop cult classic, and a overlooked masterpiece. Crazy production for its time too, if you liked Paul's Boutique, you'll like this too (I hope)

1000Patte

Holy shit insanely based. Please seek help immediately Go listen to stabscotch, boredoms and impossible nothing

titgod98

I like Zach Hill too Liars - They Were Wrong So We Drowned Big Black - Songs About Fucking

jmd2125

Dont recognise quite a few of these, apart from King krule, do nothing, midi, black country, swans and Mac. Where do find most your new music usually?

theugliestgreen

RYM, mostly. I crawl through some of the longer, more esoteric discussion threads and try the ones with the most interesting cover arts. A lot of these are Zach Hill/Zach Hill adjacent, I adore anything hes on.

M1cropow3r

I guess so
