The V8 is so good. I had a Tundra, went to a Tacoma and was so disappointed in the engine. Lacked power, poor gas mileage. Went back to the Tundra and for the first month, I couldn’t stop smiling at the power.
Hard disagree. Test drive both and went with the 6.2 Sierra. The hybrid V6 was very underwhelming to me. So much so I preferred the non hybrid version more, even though that was underwhelming as well.
And this is coming from someone who has owned exclusively Toyotas for the last decade.
Bonus feature for the 6.2L is the active exhaust. That shit is awesome.
As a former Tacoma owner, that 3.6L V6 is the worst V6 I've ever driven with. A complete turd of an engine paired with a stupid transmission. No amount of tunes can fix that horrible torque curve and poor gearing.
The Tacoma never came with a 3.6l. It did come with the 2.7l 4cyl and the 4.0l 6cyl. They used to have a 3.4 years ago. The 3.5TT makes more power than the 8cyl and the powerband is much better.
The 3.5 replaced the 4.0. Not a good move on Toyota’s part. The 4.0 in my 2017 Frontier has plenty of pep with its old transmission. I’ve heard the 4.0 tacoma was better in feel than the 3.5 that came later with the different transmission.
Lol ok, physically speaking the transmission is probably sound. It just breaks your spirit ever time you drive it. Getting a tune helps it. But even the incline of a speed bump makes that thing downshift. This again goes back to the stupid torque curve and peak @4600rpm. I believe one of the dynos I saw shows at cruising speed the engine is running at about 130lbs ft of torque when sitting at 1600rpm.
Jesus, that’s bad. That’s how I felt in my Colorado, it felt so underpowered for what it was. I don’t doubt the Tacoma feels worse off cause of how old the engine is
What makes it not a work truck? Just curious. I went to pick up mulch a couple weekends ago with my ‘23, and told them only 2 tons. The guy must have heard two buckets because I went over the scales at a shade over 20,000 lbs combined. I almost shit myself but they had it loaded okay so I just drove home. 45 miles at 55 mph, truck had zero issues with power or braking, it trailed well, I do have Timbren overloads which may have helped. I wouldn’t do it again of course, it wasn’t built for this, but it did everything I asked with no sweat.
when did it go from "work truck" to "not a work truck"? It's different, there are some things I don't like as much, there are some things I like more, but it's not a completely different rig with completely different use cases
I wouldn't get too bent out of shape on it. Everyone wants to gate-keep what a truck is. When I got mine my friends lost their shit.
"You don't need a truck..." It's my money fuckers. I wanted a truck.
For real you say anything about that engine blowing up or the turbos, or the build quality they downvote the shit out of you, but hey they got a $1500 lemon payment I mean truck payment 😂
I can totally understand why they’d be upset after dropping home down payment level sums on a vehicle. However, it becomes a hive mind situation when if you mention anything about reliability of the “refreshed” engines, you’re downvoted into oblivion.
It’s only $10k-$15k more than the v6 and so much more tech… Toyota does know their loyalist fools. I was almost one of them until I saw the price and engine specs I was like you did what with what to only get a few more mpg.
I'm pretty loyal to Toyota but I got a nice used 21 instead of the Gen 3 as soon as I saw the blown motors reports.
People get so butt hurt about "their truck having a problem", then they defend it saying "but they're taking care of us with the recall!" No shit, they better.
The fact is they paid a lot of money for something that could grenade and they act like it's totally fine because they got a recall and "will be taken care of", they don't even say how it's going to be addressed yet.
I still own both. The only thing 5.7 has over the ‘22 is the noise. My 22 has more acceleration, better towing, and better MPG. Like I said I love them both, but trying to act like the old v8 is better at anything other than nostalgia and the roar of a V8 is playing pretend. I’ll live through the growing pains of the new gen just like I did with the GEN2. Still an absolutely beautiful truck even with the outdated tech.
I moved over to the 5.7 Tundra from my older ford f150 4.6.. it was good but OMG this Tundra is amazing and so incredible pulling my 6000 lb travel trailer 😍
The tech in the new is pretty great, but I personally prefer the lower tech with a solid platform. I’ve got a ‘21 Trail in Cement color and love it, although only 8k miles on it 😬. Still breaking it in..
I’ve got this same Morimoto lights, and that’s possibly the best upgrade I’ve done, along with their fogs.
I need to get that pro grille. Did you purchase through dealer? I’ve read that’s the better route to go. Mine is chrome 😡, no idea why they black everything on the Trail, then throw the chrome grille on it.
Yeah I did some dealers are cool and some are not when ordering TRD pro parts. You may have to shop around a bit or look in Tundra Forums for latest advice. I did it 3.5 years ago
I need to do similar. I got a little sub behind rear seat & amp, but haven’t upgraded the head unit. Will do some research to get that going soon. How many miles in your ‘07? My dad is approaching 300k on his.
Very nice! I bought my first Tundy a month or so ago (2018 Limited). Man I am so in love with the truck. Ive already pulled a camper with with and it performed so good. I dont care about the mileage honestly. The ride it provides on the interstate is well worth it. I want to put some Bilsteins on eventually to level out the front some, so I am open to suggestions.
I got a 2014 4.6L, it’s still a great engine. Slapped some flowmasters on it and it sounds like a race care. Love my truck. I’ll replace engine before I get the 3rd gens
About to do the same thing but nothing to do with the recall. Thought I wanted a new truck with new tech but I just don’t care about the tech enough to pay for it every month. It’s a great truck and I’ll miss it, comfortable and plenty of power.
Ooh! I got a TRD Sequoia 21 in the same color. Got it brand new and currently at 60,000 miles. Perfect for roadtrips. Love this hood though. Thinking about converting my Sequoia OEM hood to this instead.
Nice truck! 👊🏽
Hell ya, GREAT choice!! You will be so glad you opted for the 5.7l V8 over this deplorable V6 that you can hardly mod, and gets WORSE gas millage. I got 20mpg on my 5.7 V8 driving in the mountains..
The sales guy gave me what I originally paid for it, I told him that was the only way I was going to do the deal. It took a little back and forth to get it sorted out.
I was in the same state of mind when I did my swap and would have been willing to be a little upside down just for that peace of mind and the whole "how is the recall going to play out and how does it affect the use of my truck while it's being worked on". Good luck!
Not yet. Still contemplating. There was a 21 with 29k miles for $42k. But it was gobbled up quick. I’m kind of particular in needing crewmax which further limits. I’ll keep searching. And maybe by time remedy gets out if it’s crate and extra warranty I ride it out. Just trying to not get into a worse predicament by rushing. But I’ll keep eyes out for one that makes sense in the meantime
I heard things about the engine problems in the new 2024 tundras it's all true? Damn!. I have 2021 ram rebel and was thinking about switching to tundra but maybe perhaps I should reconsider..

Possibly most manufacturers have issues at first when changing to a different platform. I have 9,000 miles on my 24 I got on Black Friday only issue so far was a weird software issue they fixed. But so far the dealership has been great on keeping up on the maintenance plus a 100,000 mile warranty
People have short memories. There were lots of problems with new Gen2's back in 2007. The Toyota faithful to the Gen1 Tundra's were up in arms and seething with anger that Toyota had ruined the Tundra and their reputation for reliability. History is indeed available to curious minds.
V8 tundra is a blast to drive, I have a 2012 and it always puts a smile on my face when driving. the days of throaty V8 engines are going by the wayside with the push toward more fuel efficiency blah blah blah.
And the hysterical fact is the new V6 trash tundras get THE EXACT SAME or WORSE gas millage then a V8. I have off road tires and both a front and rear 1/4" steel powder coated custom bumpers that are close to 200lbs each, I get 14.5mpg in STOP AND GO 30mph local driving...
It's really not. There's one issue that was caused by stupid workers. Has nothing to do with the engineering of the engine which is actually better than the V8 In every way

These models def look better than the current gen. I thought they’d grow on me like other trucks and cars, but man that thing is dogshit ugly. The grill, the pin stripe tail lights just the whole thing. But last gen are giant and gas guzzlers so pick your poison I guess.
Same. I thought they'd grow on me, and some do look really good (with a lift and larger tires). I think the Sierra AT4 and Ford F150 Tremors are the best looking fullsize trucks now. The 3rd gen isn't close to them IMO. And each of them has problems. At this point I'm just going to pick whichever drives best and trade before warranty is out.
Congrats! I have the exact same truck. Can’t go wrong with the Lunar Rock, and it sounds like you got a hell of a deal, as well. Any issues installing the Wescott sliders? Or did they bolt right up without any modifications?
To each their own. I still have a 5.7 for work that I love but the ‘22 SR5 TRD Sport I have is just a nicer ride all around. More HP, more towing, better acceleration, better tech. The ‘20 still looks and sounds meaner (to me) but that’s all it has over the newer model, well maybe an inch of headroom too it feels like.
No I have been. But a recall is making it right. Everyone on the sub makes it seems like it's every truck in the new gen. I traded my 21 in for a 24 recently and won't look back. Shout out toi a warranty.
Yea people are just a bunch of Marys. The new Gen is better In every way. Statistically you prob won't have an issue with a new one and if you do it will be remedied. People are just scared 😱
It’s a nice truck, but the 3rd gen is better in almost every way. People will forget the recall in a few months and business as usual for Toyota. Plus, recall is a good thing, u know it’s fixed now under warranty. Way better than blowing up after the warranty is over. More cars should do it, like teslas.
I mean, it also has better payload, better towing, more power, more offroad capability, better ride. Sure looks are subjective but in nearly every other metric the 3rd gen is superior. Yea 1mpg is a big increase in efficiency when you get that big of a boost in power
For me it is. Hate the 2nd gen body roll, brakes are absolutely terrible. Don’t like the looks, this is subjective. Interior is outdated, don’t have single issue with the tech in the new one, I have a Prius with the new tech also and not a single issue there either. Cameras are great. The only thing I would say is the AC is not as strong as the older Toyotas, and this seems to be the case with the new Toyotas across the board. Plus, it’s more comfortable too. What’s there to hate. Toyota will fix the ones with the issues, and you’re good.
Nobody cares about gas mileage if ur getting a truck. You’re not gonna get anything close to what I want regardless old or new.
What other issue is there besides some asshole screwing up at the manufacturing plant??? That doesn't change the reliability or longevity as a whole, it's a singular issue. Yall are wild bro.😭🤣🤣 there's literally nothing better about the v8 that's been proven yet...
That color is sweet
I’m more partial to fords shade of that color with cactus grey but it’s still an awesome color nonetheless
The V8 is so good. I had a Tundra, went to a Tacoma and was so disappointed in the engine. Lacked power, poor gas mileage. Went back to the Tundra and for the first month, I couldn’t stop smiling at the power.
Smiles per gallon
Gallons per smile
With all the recalls with the new tundra, the 2nd gen never felt so good to drive...!
I’ve never kept a car more than 3 years. I’m keeping my 2020 5.7 Tundra for the long haul. It’s a great truck.
miles n smiles
I use to have a 6.2 sierra, and I love the hybrid V6 much more.
Cool. We were singing the praises of the V8 but thanks for your input.
Yeah no shit. The V8 in my sierra would put the tundras to bed. Still love the new hybrid.
K
Hard disagree. Test drive both and went with the 6.2 Sierra. The hybrid V6 was very underwhelming to me. So much so I preferred the non hybrid version more, even though that was underwhelming as well. And this is coming from someone who has owned exclusively Toyotas for the last decade. I have a 6.2, hope you bought the extended warranty!! They love to blow up!
As a former Tacoma owner, that 3.6L V6 is the worst V6 I've ever driven with. A complete turd of an engine paired with a stupid transmission. No amount of tunes can fix that horrible torque curve and poor gearing.
My 3.4 with a supercharger can chirp the tires in 2nd gear. Wayyyyy slow naturally aspirated.
The Tacoma never came with a 3.6l. It did come with the 2.7l 4cyl and the 4.0l 6cyl. They used to have a 3.4 years ago. The 3.5TT makes more power than the 8cyl and the powerband is much better.
My bad, that's a flub of my fingers. I meant the 3.5L of the 3rd Gen.
The 3.5 replaced the 4.0. Not a good move on Toyota’s part. The 4.0 in my 2017 Frontier has plenty of pep with its old transmission. I’ve heard the 4.0 tacoma was better in feel than the 3.5 that came later with the different transmission.
They should have kept the 4L for dclb the wheel base on the base models forced them to downgrade the engine for a bit more fuel economy.
The Chevy Colorado would like to talk to you about your v6s extended warranty and way better transmission.
Lol ok, physically speaking the transmission is probably sound. It just breaks your spirit ever time you drive it. Getting a tune helps it. But even the incline of a speed bump makes that thing downshift. This again goes back to the stupid torque curve and peak @4600rpm. Jesus, that’s bad. That’s how I felt in my Colorado, it felt so underpowered for what it was. I don’t doubt the Tacoma feels worse off cause of how old the engine is
The old Tacoma or new?
It’s all relative. Yes the V8 is more powerful but the tundra weighs more than

Awesome. This is my grail truck.
You saw the light!!!! Welcome back brother….
Good call. Now you won’t have to worry about the engine locking up or the related safety recall released on May 30, 2024.
As a former 2007, current 2022 owner the recall helps - they got to the root of the issue and are fixing it - isn't that what we want from Toyota?
Yes and lots of people are happy with the new Tundras, but it is no longer a work truck for the masses.
Yup exactly
That and lower prices.
V6 owners are downvoting you. They’re seething 🤣

For real you say anything about that engine blowing up or the turbos, or the build quality they downvote the shit out of you, but hey they got a $1500 lemon payment I mean truck payment 😂
Stop speaking the truth you are making way too much sense. You will start to scare people who over paid for their trucks!
So true. I forgot truth is bad on Reddit 🤣
I can totally understand why they’d be upset after dropping home down payment level sums on a vehicle. However, it becomes a hive mind situation when if you mention anything about reliability of the “refreshed” engines, you’re downvoted into oblivion.
They’re still upset and downvoting me
Should see the vehement folks on the Tacoma forums desperately defending the new 4 cylinder turbo.
TuRbO go brrrrrrrrrrrrr
The new 4s , especially with the snorkel, do have some Sweet turbo sounds and wastegate flutter
It’s only $10k-$15k more than the v6 and so much more tech… Toyota does know their loyalist fools. I was almost one of them until I saw the price and engine specs I was like you did what with what to only get a few more mpg.
May as well just supercharge a v6 3.5l have a better truck cheaper..
I'm pretty loyal to Toyota but I got a nice used 21 instead of the Gen 3 as soon as I saw the blown motors reports. People get so butt hurt about "their truck having a problem", then they defend it saying "but they're taking care of us with the recall!" No shit, they better. Lot of people that just threw down $60-70k don’t like this, but you are 100% right!
Oh I’m right there with them, I don’t like it either.
Bad ass!!
Gen 2 are just better vehicles.
I still own both. The only thing 5.7 has over the ‘22 is the noise. My 22 has more acceleration, better towing, and better MPG. I’ll live through the growing pains of the new gen just like I did with the GEN2. Still an absolutely beautiful truck even with the outdated tech.
Fair enough. I trust the 5.7L to have a longer lifespan
Yeah you can’t trust a turbo motor to last 300k miles.
Excellent choice!!! The 5.7L is the most reliable modern V8 ever made. 👍
Now these are the kind of posts I wanna see
Smart move
I moved over to the 5.7 Tundra from my older ford f150 4.6.. it was good but OMG this Tundra is amazing and so incredible pulling my 6000 lb travel trailer 😍
This photo screams Az, nice ride man
100%
The only Tundra to buy.
The tech in the new is pretty great, but I personally prefer the lower tech with a solid platform. I’ve got a ‘21 Trail in Cement color and love it, although only 8k miles on it 😬. I have a 21 Trail Army Green. Original owner at 30k miles. Color matched front end and swapped in TRD pro grille.
I pad $1200 for a double din Kenwood head unit with voice control/car play/bu camera and the steering controls work.....for my 2007 lol.
I need to do similar. I got a little sub behind rear seat & amp, but haven’t upgraded the head unit. Will do some research to get that going soon. How many miles in your ‘07? My dad is approaching 300k on his.
Only 130,000ish. I only drive it for truck stuff 👍
Is that the 2021?
Yes sir
Congrats. Gorgeous Pro!
About to trade in my burnt orange 2015 TRD Pro with 77k due to needing a 3/4 ton for work. Not very happy
You might be leaving a lot on the table with trade in on that thing. Just my .02 if you’re in New England I’d buy it!
Tell me about it, if they made a 3/4 ton or bigger tundra with DRW, that’s what I would be driving. Can’t complain about my 2500 though
I want it!!!
Cummins
Very nice! I bought my first Tundy a month or so ago (2018 Limited). Man I am so in love with the truck. Ive already pulled a camper with with and it performed so good. Have the Bilsteins on the front ICON add a leaf rear 2013 Sport DCLB 100k miles definitely nice ride with the Toyos.
Thank you for the information!
Love the color
I got a 2014 4.6L, it’s still a great engine. Slapped some flowmasters on it and it sounds like a race care. Love my truck. I’ll replace engine before I get the 3rd gens
Niiice👍🏼
This is the way.
Wise choice. Wise choice.
I’m proud of you
You saved yourself a headache! 🥳 the new gen is trash. Just get a whipple now and you will eat them up and have reliability. 😂
Can those engines even take a whipple? Honest question because I’ve never heard of it.
Whipple does have a kit now, tho I have yet to have seen one installed.
I'm jelly
About to do the same thing but nothing to do with the recall. Thought I wanted a new truck with new tech but I just don’t care about the tech enough to pay for it every month. It’s a great truck and I’ll miss it, comfortable and plenty of power.
Ooh! I got a TRD Sequoia 21 in the same color. Got it brand new and currently at 60,000 miles. Perfect for roadtrips. Love this hood though. Thinking about converting my Sequoia OEM hood to this instead. Nice truck! 👊🏽

Hello.... Arizona
Hell ya, GREAT choice!! You will be so glad you opted for the 5.7l V8 over this deplorable V6 that you can hardly mod, and gets WORSE gas millage. I got 20mpg on my 5.7 V8 driving in the mountains..
Beautiful truck! I love the hell out of mine!
Lunar Rock is such an awesome color. Pops so much in the sun.
Smart
Congrats!! Bought the nicest tundra ever made!
I did the same thing about 3 weeks ago.
Can I ask about how much you got for trade in? Contemplating doing the same for my 24 sr5
The sales guy gave me what I originally paid for it, I told him that was the only way I was going to do the deal. It took a little back and forth to get it sorted out.
Wow that’s really cool of them! So you went back to the dealer you bought from for best results it seems.
Yes, same dealer and it worked out fortunately.
Was yours a 24? Making it easier to get to original price? I’m in a 24 sr5. With 900 miles on it
Yes, '24 Platinum, around 2000 miles at the time.
Good to know thanks! My trade in they are offering is a bit less I’d be eating about 5 grand. But man it’s still tempting. For peace of mind
I was in the same state of mind when I did my swap and would have been willing to be a little upside down just for that peace of mind and the whole "how is the recall going to play out and how does it affect the use of my truck while it's being worked on". Good luck!
Did you do the trade to 2nd gen?
Not yet. Still contemplating. There was a 21 with 29k miles for $42k. But it was gobbled up quick. I’m kind of particular in needing crewmax which further limits. I’ll keep searching. Who knows, but my '24 has been awesome so far
Not as bad as some would lead you to believe. Do your own research
It’s on the 22 and 23 tundra not the 24
A couple 24s are trickling in on the tundras forum and spreadsheet. I’m in a 24 SR5 so it’s got me closely watching lol

Already at 30k 🤷♂️
How much you pay for it? And what year?
2021. Paid 45k
Tacoma owner here and know nothing about tundras. $45k seems like a steal for a TRD pro tundra with 18k miles, right?
I paid 43K for my 2018 with 12K miles so yeah its a steal.
I would consider adding trans cooler Just because.. prob overkill
Holy lol
Smart move
Yup! Did the exact same thing. Feels good even thought I carried negative equity. If that says anything
How much did you pay for it?
The ultimate upgrade!! Serious buyers should take note.
At least you can trade that V8 for the 2026 or 2027 TTTRDPro whenever they fix all these issues. That’s a nice good looking truck.
best Tundra ever in the best color imo…you’ve got great taste🤙🏼
Where did you find a 21 pro with such low mileage? I have the same vehicle but I have 70k miles on it already.
Got lucky. Some old guy had it in his garage. Probably drove it to church on Sunday!
Good choice! Have the exact same truck. Purchased with 17K miles last year. Although, it's a shame you didn't get it with the OEM Pro Wheels
Love my trd pro. This color is the tits man
Out of curiosity. About how much did you get for your trade in? Contemplating the same on my 24 SR5. Just for the worry. Even though it on recall yet
Did you change shocks ?
Congrats! I have the exact same truck. Can’t go wrong with the Lunar Rock, and it sounds like you got a hell of a deal, as well. Any issues installing the Wescott sliders? Or did they bolt right up without any modifications?
Thx. Everything bolted right up with no mods
Just going to leave us hanging as to why you went back!?
Any issues with tire rub with this setup?
I have a hybrid Tundra. Power is great. Can you compare them?
What made you ditch the V6 for the V8?
To each their own. I still have a 5.7 for work that I love but the ‘22 SR5 TRD Sport I have is just a nicer ride all around. More HP, more towing, better acceleration, better tech. The ‘20 still looks and sounds meaner (to me) but that’s all it has over the newer model, well maybe an inch of headroom too it feels like.
Hell yeah! Consumer debt!
Why did you trade in the gen 3?
Have you not been paying attention?
No I have been. But a recall is making it right. Everyone on the sub makes it seems like it's every truck in the new gen. I traded my 21 in for a 24 recently and won't look back. Shout out toi a warranty.
Whatever dude. It's your money. Enjoy.
Yea people are just a bunch of Marys. The new Gen is better In every way. Statistically you prob won't have an issue with a new one and if you do it will be remedied. People are just scared 😱
EXACTLY!! and if not Lemmon law me and I'm still buying a new tundra 🤣🤣 and I'm taxing because I got the 1794 limited edition
Fax bro
Pros outweigh the cons a ton.
Turbos suck! Toyota is going the wrong direction
Tacoma upgrade to Tundra Tundra Six upgrade to Tundra V8 Tundra Turbo V6 upgrade to loaner
This is the way.
Lol, no it is not. The 3rd gen doesnt even LOOK better. Oh yea, it gets 1 whole mpg better.
Smart move! And to think some idiots people think a tiny engine with turbos will perform well hauling all that mass around! SMH
Fail. Say goodbye to that diesel level torque curve!!! 👍😏
With Kia-like reliability/longevity.
What other issue is there besides some asshole screwing up at the manufacturing plant??? That doesn't change the reliability or longevity as a whole, it's a singular issue. Yall are wild bro.😭🤣🤣 there's literally nothing better about the v8 that's been proven yet...
Oof.
No answers? Kay.
Arguing with a…. It’s a fruitless endeavor.
