I don’t really like the idea of Amiibos in the first place. They’re effectively physical DLC/Paywalls. Worthwhile content could be gated for many players. For Pokémon, it wouldn’t feel right if scanning an Amiibo made specific Pokémon appear in your game that weren’t normally accessible without them

Galgus

I recently bought the Ivysaur amibo because I like how it looks, but I agree that gating content like that can be lame. Playing through mainline games late, there’s always a sour spot when I learn about another event or timed exclusive content that I’ll never get to experience. Edit: There is something appealing about the figure being your AI fighter though.

FatJesus9

I would be willing to buy some but I literally NEVER gone in a single store and found an Amiibo on the shelf. They are always sold out before they even arrive, or if one is there, its some really obscure lame character from a lame game I haven't heard of and there's like 3 of the same one. I one Amiibo, a generic Bowser, that I happened to see at GameStop, they had a whole section for Amiibo but only 3 ones in total, all the same Bowser. I live in a pretty big American city too...

They were making Amiibo cards for Animal Crossing, which were cheaper alternatives to actual Amiibo's, that took up less space. They could just do that It would work especially well for Pokemon, because of how many Pokemon exist

coolwali

Yes, it could work, but I'd argue it wouldn't be a good idea. How likely are you to get a specific card? The most popular cards are likely to get hoovered up by others and get jacked up in price. There are hundreds of Pokemon that are potentially obtainable. Not to mention it will only make the Amiibo compatability charts even more confusing to navigate in the future.

Ender_Skywalker

Just use the actual existing Pokemon cards, at that point.

[deleted]

They don't have the NFC chip built into them, so they can't

Ender_Skywalker

I meant new cards produced in the style of Pokemon cards with the functionality of the Animal Crossing ones.

[deleted]

Didn't even think of this, tbh. That would be a good idea Though, Pokemon cards and the TCG is a lot different than how Pokemon/Pokemon battling works in the videogames

Ender_Skywalker

How they battle would be irrelevant. The point is pokemon thing in your hand equals pokemon thing in your game.

[deleted]

I picture the Pokemon cards having exclusive moves, Hidden Abilities, certain EV's/IV's/natures, ect. Obivously, the TCG doesn't have most of these things

Ender_Skywalker

As it stands, most of them are very unsubstantial things that could be framed more as a bonus for owning the figure than the figure being a paywall for the content. That said, there are some exceptions like Wolf Link in Breath of the Wild.

maxk713

I wish the figurines from Pokemon Duel on mobile could have been made into amiibos. Or maybe the other way around. Amiibos could be used in Pokemon Duel. Not sure how that would work with NFC, but an idea is there.

RBGolbat

My wish is that the tower in the Wild Area could have been able to scan Pokémon amiibo and use them (once per day) to trigger a Dynamax raid of any Pokemon with an amiibo. Obviously Mewtwo would only be allowed to captured once per save file. Maybe using a non-Pokémon amiibo would trigger a dynamax raid from an other list of uncommon Pokémon?

cobblecrafter

I’d prefer no company ever lock important mechanics behind a paywall. Amiibo should never unlock quality of life improvements or new mechanics. Amiibo should provide nice but not necessary things like cosmetics. I think breath of the wild handled amiibo best.

Hot-Watch-1932

I wanna use my pokemon amiibos like a skylander

second_to_myself

Amiiibo are so awful. They won’t even let you buy the content as DLC. Instead you have to wait for something plastic to be manufactured that’s just gonna sit on a shelf and get thrown away in a decade. The expansion pass was already frustrating, if they start locking stuff behind amiibo that’s not just cosmetic, I’m out

Torgo_the_Bear

This is just me wanting a new type of high quality official figure for Clefable and Shuckle

BabiTigerWoods

I'd always just assumed that they'd use the Pokemon Series Amiibos for costumes/outfits based on the specific pokemon amiibo being used in the game.

dbull10285

From the moment the Animal Crossing Amiibo cards were announced, I've thought it was a missed opportunity to not have some TCG packs, even if they're just the larger deck sets, come with one Amiibo card. Even before the cards started trending thanks to YouTubers, this seemed like it would be a slam dunk way to sale cross-platform, as I've had no interest in buying a pack of cards in years. Especially in the world of Magearna being the first always available mythical given QR codes, a whatever year anniversary celebration promoting mythical or simply random event Pokemon distributions through the card tins (where the Amiibo is shown so it's not random) that were a 1-time per save code deal seemed like a really cool way to sell TCG fans on the video game and vice-versa.

metalflygon08

I wouldn't mind it if theu worked similarly to BoTW a random chest with some minor look spawns in. Maybe some clothing based on that Pokemon, but have that clothing available in game naturally too, but post-game, so the akimbo just gets it earlier for the played.
