Austin’s- at the original location with the funny booths. I would get milkshakes there as a kid and was always so pleased to get the milkshake PLUS the mixer with all the milkshake that didn’t fit in the glass.
Edit to add: Zachary’s. Was in Chicago last weekend and the pizza I had there made me think of Zach’s for the first time in a long time.
Zachary's also had an amazing beer list for it's time. You could have a slice of pizza with a draft of Corsendonk or some other obscure Belgian beer. So good... Ah, to be back at U of A in the '90s.
Yep I thought those lanes were so cool, always loved how the waitresses would just cruise around in their private little aisles serving the booths. I also loved the lighting and the stool seats and soda fountain. I remember when Austin’s left that location and opened in what I think was an old JB’s restaurant- all the magic was gone and suddenly it was very ordinary.
Lord did my family love Austin’s. I always got the egg salad sandwich with tomato soup and a mocha chip milkshake. It was a staple when I was growing up and a bygone era
Yes! Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!
The old owners daughter is writing a cookbook and will have ALL the recipes from the restaurant, and more obviously but the important ones are the green chili, the Albondgas soup
The original Sanchez Burrito Co on first Ave. First thing I’d order would be the number 11 (bean, and cheese and rice), and of course I’d get it Sanchez style.
at least they've been immortalized in cinema.

The Bagel Bakery on speedway. In the 80s it was a hardcore New York style Jewish bagel place. It was fantastic. To this day, I've never found a bialy as good as the one that they had there. Their bagels were amazing. I really miss that place
I remember going there every morning before biking to work. A cookie, salad bar, or knish with my coffee while I read for a bit. Such a perfect chill space.
The Good Earth was awesome! I was just a kid, but have great memories of going there on occasion with my parents. It seemed very fancy and grown up to my 5 year old brain.
That place was one of many unique restaurants in Tucson that I miss as an adult living in Washington. There's nothing fun up here – everything is fast food or hipster restaurants that take themselves too seriously and are overpriced.
There's really nothing like Trail Dust Town or Hidden Valley Inn anywhere I've lived.
Fronimo’s! A Greek restaurant on Speedway that used to be across the street from The Loft. My family ate there nearly every week and, sadly, the landlord wouldn’t let them renew the lease during covid, so they had to close. The food was great, but the employees really made it a great place to be.
I moved away from my hometown about 6 years ago and I was so bummed when I went home for Christmas last year and learned it had closed :(
Edit: Greek, not "Green"
Oh man. Me too. Everything about it, from its grittiness, to its sketchy bathrooms, to its delicious food. It was an experience to go affer the bars closed.
Technically a relocation of the most original restaurant on Scott between Congress and Broadway.
When Suzanna first opened a bigger Cafe Poca Cosa just up the street at the Hotel Santa Rita, her dad and sisters kept the old spot going as the Little Cafe Poca Cosa.
Then the Santa Rita got razed, so Suzanna relocated Cafe Poca Cosa to the Pennington spot, and then the OG spot on Scott got razed too, so they relocated to the Alameda spot and renamed it The Little One since there'd always been too much confusion between the Cafe Poca Cosa vs. the *Little* Cafe Poca Cosa.
I still get sad thinking about this one. I’d go every year for my birthday. The food was amazing and their salsa was also underrated. Can’t find anything close to their flavors.
Yes! I loved the thrill of not knowing what you were going to eat until they brought it out, and everybody at the table sharing.
One time I got these banana-cream tamales and they were MAGICAL! Never found anywhere else that had anything even close.
Gee's Garden for Dim Sum, 100%
On Speedway & Alvernon, I grew up eating there, doing saturday dim sum brunches with my Mom, and after she died my aunt and I would go there to remember her.
When it closed down during COVID, I was distraught. I know there's a dim sum place in midtown, but they don't have my favorite dumplings and I'm pretty sure they buy a lot of theirs frozen.
Meanwhile, at least there's [Slice & Ice](https://sliceandicetucson.com/), started by one of Eegee's original cofounders a few years ago, and about as close to OG Eegee's as we're ever gonna get.
For Mexican food: Leruas (yes, I know about el torero, but when I was a kid back in the late 70’s and all through the 80’s, my grandparents and then my father had businesses literally a block away).
For memories of my teen years: Coffee Etc.
For the best focaccia in the world: Pronto.
For that amazing smell and those bread rolls: The Good Earth
And just because the space meant so much to me through every business that was there: Cafe Quebec / Cafe Q / Shot in the Dark.
Honorable mention to the short lived goth cafe / venue that spun off from The Fineline, Gargoyles.
El Mezon del Cobre - was on First Ave. where Berraco is now. It was my favorite Mexican Restaurant. Their salsa was the best, and the basics like beef/chicken enchiladas or Chili Colorado could not be matched.
The Bum Steer, omg. My mother used to take us there for lunch in the summer. As a kid it was endlessly fascinating. Don't remember a thing about the food but the decor was ... wow.
Old Pueblo Grill. How I miss their southwestern mac 'n cheese! And the atmosphere - classy but cozy, none of the concrete floors and bare walls which are trendy today.
Top places I miss are Old Chicago, Mamas Hawaiian, and The Auld Dubliner.
I see The Auld Dubliner is back to being a pub though. So, I'm going to have to check that out. As of July. I did like the Irish dishes though.
The food wasn’t great and the beer was ok, but I really liked the crappy “family dining” vibe of a mall restaurant but it’s actually a local brewery. Thunder Canyon at the Foothills Mall for me.
I was lucky enough to have Cactus Moon during all my college years (and a couple after). Those Wednesday Ladies Nights with 25cent drinks were my church lol. I moved out of state for a bit and they closed while I was gone, went back when I was visiting town and it had changed to Denim and Diamonds and it was so depressing, like all the heart was gone from it. Never found another bar/club quite like it
a little surprised to not yet see any mentions of the big A (where trident on speedway currently is) and east coast super subs (now a food truck, but not the same). before frankie's arrived, they were the only place with proper hoagie sauce.
Wilco-- locally sourced beef cheeseburger was the absolute best I've ever had.
The grill--so many 3 am chain-smoking hangouts with other 3rd shift workers.
The original Caffe Passe-- kaiserschmarm with a nice German beer at 10am to start a nice weekend day bar hopping downtown with my doggo.
Gee's Garden had the absolute best weekend dim sum
The original Fatman Kitchen--before it was bought out and Americanized that place was incredible.
I forget it's name but there was this old Vietnamese lady that had a Bahn Mi store on Campbell and speedway--i went there all the time and she was just such an old unfiltered Vietnamese momma. One time I walked in and she looked at me and loudly declared "you have too many pimples drink this" and handed me basil seed tea and told me it would "fix your face."
The Tack Room. It was cool to have a legit 5-star dining option in town. Out of my price range 99% of the time, but I think it elevated the whole dining scene and I feel like a lot of other "fine dining" adjacent places went downhill after they closed.
There was a highly mediocre Italian joint that was on the Southwest corner of Speedway and Arcadia, where the O'Reilly auto parts is now, but I don't recall the name right now. The owner traded meal credits to my parents for doing yard maintenance at his house so we ate there a lot as kids. I'm not sure they need to come back, Tucson has no shortage of mediocre Italian, but I was sad when it closed (in the mid-90's, I think).
Bobby McGee's on Tanque Verde. Loved the costumes the servers wore and the soup and salad bar. My brother and I called it "man in the bathtub" because of the sign out front.
I really miss Swensens/Sullivans from when it was under the original owners. My family went there on Fridays for the meal deal at least once a month, and knew all the staff and servers by name. It wasn't spectacular food, but it was comfortable and dependable. The new owner screwed up everything that worked about that place (changed ice cream recipes/ingredients, got rid of the meal deal, gave up on customer service), then ran it into the ground. I miss my no-frills burger, steak fries, and single-scoop Fridays.
Pistol Pete's Pizza, Sir George's all you can eat, and ice cream cones at Thrifty's. Y'all got me hungry now. Really miss Pancho's and fun fact, I used to run the dinner shift at Thunder Canyon at the foothills Mall when the vibe was always good times!
I just thought of 2 more.
Wings over Broadway (before if went downhill)
Thunder Canyon Brewery when it was still at the Foothills mall. They had such a good happy hour and it was a really fun vibe.
Greasy Tony's. Oh lord, amazing grinders. Pizza that looked like it should have been on TV. Extra grease was always free.
El Taco. There were a couple scattered around town. Crazy yummy cheap tacos.
Maria's. Amazing Mexican restaurant just across the street from the VA. Best carne seca chimis. I miss them so much.
Does anyone remember that old 50's style diner near TMC on Grant? 5523 E Grant Rd. I remember going when I was a kid in the late 90's. They would give you free popcorn and they served it in a little cardboard 50's cadillac. I can't remember if the food was any good but I would bring it back just for the nostalgia.
Opa’s made a gyro salad to which I have found none comparable.
Frankie’s -when under original ownership was amazing
Brushfire Grill -same as Frankie’s. It’s just not as good now under new ownership.
Dagwood’s- though Bumsted’s is great too
In early 2000s my favorite restaurant was City Grill on Tanque Verde. Really great fish.
Furr’s was our first stop right after we got off the plane to come for a visit. There was a wonderful lady named America who worked there.
And it wasn’t a restaurant but The Chocolate Iguana was my favorite store to visit as a kid in the 90s. We’d go to the old Children’s Museum and then would pick out chocolate band-aids and candy afterwards. It wasn’t the same once it was sold in the late 90s.
Bentley's on Speedway. So many good memories during grad school and after. Good dates, bad dates, ok dates. Family memories. I was gutted when they closed. Also Tallboy's, even though it wasn't open for as long. At least their spirit lives on in LaCo!
Monkey Burger, which should be coming back, has been infinitely delayed on their remodeling and rebrand to Iron John's tap room. I just want a fucking burger, okay? PLEASE?
Sir george's smorgasbord. I loved their cast iron corn bread when I was a kid.
East coast subs! Great little neighborhood bar, and I loved their Shreiner sandwich, and their homemade potato chips.
Tino’s pizza was great, when you were in the mood for that type of pizza. It survived the pandemic only to close down entirely after the ownership no longer wanted to operate it. I’d love to have them back.
I saw Gordo’s elsewhere in the thread, that’s be great to see a come back too.
I have a few fuzzy memories from when I was super young, but there was some great fun at Pistol Pete’s Pizza too.
Gordo's, no question, because I really like chimichangas, mine with green chile con carne which was deep and rich, and we went most Tuesday nights before my Scout meetings.
The Grill for late nights and their bacon and white cheddar cheeseburger, made to order rare-to-medium-rare, tots with pesto-ranch for dipping, and, of course, the haystack, which has already been mentioned.
The Tack Room - 2800 N Sabino Canyon. Yes, it was overpriced - but the dark, rustic atmosphere and attentive service made it so very charming. My family celebrated a few very special occasions there. I miss getting dressed up and going out for a nice dinner to celebrate a significant milestone …..
Zachary's pizza was legendary.
Zachary's also had an amazing beer list for it's time. You could have a slice of pizza with a draft of Corsendonk or some other obscure Belgian beer. So good... Ah, to be back at U of A in the '90s.
ah, yes. the 90's from the big A to Z's...
Z’s was my pick!
Oh man! I loved Austin’s! Especially the lanes they had for waitresses by the booths. They had really great French dips.
Austin’s was the “special treat” restaurant of my early childhood (thanks to my grandmother) and I still miss it.
Oh man I miss Austin’s. That totally brings me back to my childhood 🥹
Lord did my family love Austin’s. I always got the egg salad sandwich with tomato soup and a mocha chip milkshake. It was a staple when I was growing up and a bygone era
I miss Austin's! (The original) their burgers and shakes were my favorite and my grandparents used to take me there all the time as a kid
Fronimos.
I miss their lemon rice so much
100% Casa Vincente. We don’t have a good Spanish place since they’ve been gone
Damn, would have loved a good Spanish restaurant as well!!
It wasn't gourmet, but I have so many fond childhood memories from eating at Gordo's. "I mean, if you REALLY like Chimichangas!"
"Come to Gordo's! On Broadway, just west of Kolb."
Absolutely Gordo's before they sold and the new owners destroyed the menu. ( THEY OBVIOUSLY FAILED)
Yes! Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! The old owners daughter is writing a cookbook and will have ALL the recipes from the restaurant, and more obviously but the important ones are the green chili, the Albondgas soup
I need that!
Beat me by ten minutes but I posted for Gordos anyway.
Oh, how about Pancho's? The buffet line and when you wanted more you raised the little Mexican flag at your table.
Gordo's! Gordo's! Gordo's!
I’m not sure if this is the best pick, but the first one that pops into my head is Shari’s Drive-In.
Underrated burger!
Well, I like chimichangas. I mean I REALLY like chimichangas….
Austin’s on Broadway and Country Club. I was a kid, but those cold milkshakes with a club sandwich were just the best.
Zachary's! Their service was shit but the pizza was fantastic.
The original Sanchez Burrito Co on first Ave. First thing I’d order would be the number 11 (bean, and cheese and rice), and of course I’d get it Sanchez style.
B Line. Their biscuits, burritos, and deserts.
I legit cried when that place closed down. Their desserts were the best in town.
The avocado dressing in the salmon salad :(
Their pie was my favorite
Oof, this one hit hard. Loved this place, good choice.
Greasy Tony’s
at least they've been immortalized in cinema. https://preview.redd.it/t93a76s6zpnb1.jpeg?width=797&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=979d43603278fd195021e447fc3b5cd306c44152
DaVinci's on Ft. Lowell
The Bagel Bakery on speedway. In the 80s it was a hardcore New York style Jewish bagel place. It was fantastic. To this day, I've never found a bialy as good as the one that they had there. Their bagels were amazing. I really miss that place
Hot Bagel Bakery was the name. I miss that place.
The original Frankie's
OG spot has been vacant ever since. Serves the greedy landlord right hoping to squeeze more rent out of the tenet and getting zero rent instead.
Lordy. This one hit me HARD. One of my faves, so surprised it closed. Always seemed so busy!!
The Campbell location is closed, but there's one on Thornydale.
Leruas across from the Safeway on Broadway. I hated when the city tore it down.
The owner is now running El Torero and they have many of the same things like the green corn tamales.
Rumor is that they are coming back, but that was right when they started the Broadway revitalization project. Not sure if it is still part of the plan
[удалено]
I remember going there every morning before biking to work. A cookie, salad bar, or knish with my coffee while I read for a bit. Such a perfect chill space.
Shakey’s!
La Fuente, The Good Earth, and Austin’s are all missed
The Good Earth was awesome! I was just a kid, but have great memories of going there on occasion with my parents. It seemed very fancy and grown up to my 5 year old brain.
The Good Earth 😩
Does the little old lady who stood outside Bookman’s selling fresh tortillas and tamales count?
Hidden Valley Inn. Worked there with my dad fixing miniature displays, and other things, when I was a teen. Free steak dinners all the time!
The miniatures that survived the fire are at the Mini Time Machine Museum, and it is so cool to get to see them again!
I remember the tiny trains!
Fronimo’s! A Greek restaurant on Speedway that used to be across the street from The Loft. My family ate there nearly every week and, sadly, the landlord wouldn’t let them renew the lease during covid, so they had to close. The food was great, but the employees really made it a great place to be. I moved away from my hometown about 6 years ago and I was so bummed when I went home for Christmas last year and learned it had closed :( Edit: Greek, not "Green"
The Grill. They actually had great pesto.
Bowl of captain crunch at 2am… fuck yeah
That has a special place in my heart. And the tater tot plate
good answer. loved the grill!
Oh man I miss the haystack
Oh man. Me too. Everything about it, from its grittiness, to its sketchy bathrooms, to its delicious food. It was an experience to go affer the bars closed.
Nice. I’ve heard a lot of good things about The Grill. Alas, I’ve only been in Tucson for 11 years so I missed out by about a year!
Poca Cosa
They still have The Little One (original restaurant before they expanded to the closed location) open by the library, highly recommend!
Can’t find anything close to their flavors.
so good. my spouse worked front of house there 2001-2002. ran into susana last year and she still remembered us...
Yes! I loved the thrill of not knowing what you were going to eat until they brought it out, and everybody at the table sharing. One time I got these banana-cream tamales and they were MAGICAL! Never found anywhere else that had anything even close.
I never got to eat there before it closed and I feel I missed a great opportunity.
I miss their tamale pie every day
Got lucky and got to try once before it closed. Good choice.
Downtown Kitchen
Gee's Garden for Dim Sum, 100% On Speedway & Alvernon, I grew up eating there, doing saturday dim sum brunches with my Mom, and after she died my aunt and I would go there to remember her. When it closed down during COVID, I was distraught. I know there's a dim sum place in midtown, but they don't have my favorite dumplings and I'm pretty sure they buy a lot of theirs frozen.
Kings Table - I used to love the all-you-can-eat buffet.
King's Table and Furr's. Lots of fond memories from my childhood regretting those last several slices of pie I shouldn't have eaten.
The Solarium
Eegee’s.
This was gonna be my pick. It’s just not eegees anymore
Meanwhile, at least there's [Slice & Ice](https://sliceandicetucson.com/), started by one of Eegee's original cofounders a few years ago, and about as close to OG Eegee's as we're ever gonna get.
Anyone remember Brawley’s Breakfast Diner… you used to get whole plate of food for like $2.25…
This moved to pantano wrightston and almost closed but now opened with some skilled crispy bacon making cooks, last I checked
For Mexican food: Leruas (yes, I know about el torero, but when I was a kid back in the late 70’s and all through the 80’s, my grandparents and then my father had businesses literally a block away). Aw this person Tucsons
1702 on speedway- the pizza was amazing and they always had a fresh new brew- I miss them
I miss Delectables on Fourth.
Midway Molina
💯💯💯
El Mezon del Cobre - was on First Ave. where Berraco is now. It was my favorite Mexican Restaurant. Their salsa was the best, and the basics like beef/chicken enchiladas or Chili Colorado could not be matched.
Check-it out Burger Mary’s Lucky Dollar Café Poca Cosa Grandy’s
Grandy’s!
How has nobody mentioned the French Quarter yet?
Fuddruckers on speedway near wilmot
Best ever.
80s fuddruckers = all-time
The Bum Steer Shot in the Dark Cafe The Grill
The Bum Steer, omg. My mother used to take us there for lunch in the summer. As a kid it was endlessly fascinating. Don't remember a thing about the food but the decor was ... wow.
The Atrium on Tanque Verde. Too bad it burned down.
Solarium?
Here are some super oldies: Ye Old Lantern, Ports O'Call, and not as old but El Parador.
Old Pueblo Grill. How I miss their southwestern mac 'n cheese! And the atmosphere - classy but cozy, none of the concrete floors and bare walls which are trendy today.
Szechuan Omei Restaurant
Shot in the Dark. This city is in desperate need of safe places to hang out in for night owls who aren't into the bar scene.
Keaton's Lots of family memories there
Yes! Their zucchini bread!
So many I'd love to have back: * Da Vinci's * Austin's * Jano's * Ho Wa * Japanese Kitchen * The Bum Steer * Diablo Burger
Nonie’s on Grant, it was close to Kingfisher. Gordo’s is a no brainer
Top places I miss are Old Chicago, Mamas Hawaiian, and The Auld Dubliner. I see The Auld Dubliner is back to being a pub though. So, I'm going to have to check that out. As of July. I did like the Irish dishes though.

May's Counter, I miss my chicken and waffles :(
Nimbus bistro!
I really liked the original brewery and I miss the Monkeyshine

a little surprised to not yet see any mentions of the big A (where trident on speedway currently is) and east coast super subs (now a food truck, but not the same). before frankie's arrived, they were the only place with proper hoagie sauce.

The Grill and Shot in the dark. Potatoes maximus and pesto tots. Potato supremacy.

I moved away from Tucson a few years back and this thread keeps breaking my heart more and more as I keep scrolling.
Mother Hubbard’s on Grant. Best breakfast in Tucson
Absolutely shocked no one has said this yet but… Cafe Terra Cota
I have very distant memories of going to Furrs with my great grandmother
Omfg 🤣🤣🤣 had a joke with my friends about dressing our best when we went to Furrs
It was my Grandpa's favorite restaurant.
I really miss Swensens/Sullivans from when it was under the original owners. My family went there on Fridays for the meal deal at least once a month, and knew all the staff and servers by name. cafe poca cosa 😭😭😭
Sweet tomatoes. I'd bring them back in a second, didn't even have to think about this one.
Well a private equity firm is resurrecting that company so a sweet tomatoes is coming back, in some form.
I heard they’re coming back! https://www.kgun9.com/news/local-news/broadway-sweet-tomatoes-to-reopen-under-new-ownership
Asian Sofrito for sure. They had some of the best fried chicken and plantains I’ve ever had.
Pionic! It was a make your own pizza place on campbell (similar to MOD) but had the best toppings including buffalo chicken
Poca Cosa
Keuken Dutch
Pistol Pete's Pizza, Sir George's all you can eat, and ice cream cones at Thrifty's. Y'all got me hungry now. Really miss Pancho's and fun fact, I used to run the dinner shift at Thunder Canyon at the foothills Mall when the vibe was always good times!
The Good Earth!
The Olive Tree, Larocca’s, Austin’s
Lunt Avenue marble club
4 Seasons 😭 they had my fav Thai food
The original Cafe Poca Cosa
I just thought of 2 more. Wings over Broadway (before if went downhill) Thunder Canyon Brewery when it was still at the Foothills mall. They had such a good happy hour and it was a really fun vibe.
La Fuente! Best Mexican food, best buffet, and magical atmosphere!
Cafe poca cosa
I would bring back Don Juan’s Taqueria (and the rest of the old El Con Mall)!
May's Counter! Best chicken and waffles. i crave it to this day
Oof, one?! Carlos Murphy’s, Scordatos, Lotus Garden, original Chuy’s
Senai Thai bistro

Cafe poca cosa. Rotating menu, quality food, upscale but not pretentious. Had rehearsal dinner there
The original sushi garden at Broadway and Alvernon
Grimaldis. I know it’s a franchise but I love the pizza.

OH NO. We took my aunt and uncle there and found an actual cockroach cooked into one of the potato skins, and a long hair in my burrito, 😩

Melting Pot, anybody? (https://www.reddit.com/r/Tucson/comments/6e0qxq/anyone_know_what_happened_to_the_melting_pot/)
Las Margaritas 😭😭
Monkey Burger, which should be coming back, has been infinitely delayed on their remodeling and rebrand to Iron John's tap room. I just want a fucking burger, okay? PLEASE?
Gordos!
Fronimo’s!!!
Austin's on Broadway and Country Club.
May's Counter.
Nonie’s Cajun!
Greasy Tony's. I just want one last meatball sub
I have a few fuzzy memories from when I was super young, but there was some great fun at Pistol Pete’s Pizza too.
another one i'm surprised to see no mention of: the french quarter
Gordo's, no question, because I really like chimichangas, mine with green chile con carne which was deep and rich, and we went most Tuesday nights before my Scout meetings. The Grill for late nights and their bacon and white cheddar cheeseburger, made to order rare-to-medium-rare, tots with pesto-ranch for dipping, and, of course, the haystack, which has already been mentioned.
La Fuente off of Oracle and Grant. They had amazing Mexican food.
Nimbus 🙉
The Tack Room - 2800 N Sabino Canyon. Yes, it was overpriced - but the dark, rustic atmosphere and attentive service made it so very charming. My family celebrated a few very special occasions there. I miss getting dressed up and going out for a nice dinner to celebrate a significant milestone …..
The grill in all it's grimey glory. Bring back the gravy tots.
FURRS!!
