Oh whew, just tax evasion.

AtlasPJackson

And not even, like, hiding income or structuring her business illegally. She just didn't have the energy to file. "She prioritized her deadlines." Girl, I've *been* there.

ToastyMozart

Supposedly not even intentional evasion, just tax procrastination.

Neil_O_Tip

What a fucked up situation, where you hear a Mangaka got in trouble for crimes, and you go "oh thank god it's just tax evasion" because you EXPECT worse

TransendingGaming

The same way I reacted when Jirard the Completionist was caught with charity fraud: “oh thank god he didn’t r*pe someone”

cielrayze

how real adults do adultery

zyberion

To clarify this is the artist for the manga adaptation of Apothecary Diaries not the author of the original LN.   She pleaded guilty, and claims the misreporting was due to stubborn ignorance rather than any intent to skip paying taxes owed. (She had a habit of filing multiple years of taxes at once and prioritized her work above all else)  Assuming Japanese tax law functions similarly to the States, she'll be responsible for back taxes owed, plus a fat fine, and her finances are going to be combed through by auditors for years. Unless something else sketchy appears, or there is evidence she intentionally tried to defraud the Japanese government on owed taxes, that'll be the end of that. Remember kids, if you're such a workaholic you can't be asked to filed your tax returns. Hire someone to do them for you.

Amirifiz

Noooo! I thought it was the author to the LN not the manga 😭

MindWeb125

Man if only they could like, just do the taxes themselves instead of making them do the taxes, then doing the taxes themselves to check against, and then fining you.

Muffin-zetta

The first time was the log horizon author

Ryong7

If I recall, this is such a common occurrence with mangaka randomly getting rich and having no idea how any of this shit works that there's some sort of support group to teach taxes to mangaka, BECAUSE of the log horizon author.

Away-Issue6165

It reminds me of that one tax service that exists explicitly for furry and/or porn artists, because handing over an itemized income sheet to HR block might be a little awkward when 5 of those entries are Renamon inflation art and the rest is an anatomically correct CG set of someone's MLP fancharacter.

DonTori

Isn't that the 'we're stuck in an mmo, let's make an economy Ft occasionally stop slave trades and despot guild leaders' manga? Because if so that's kinda funny

Boulderdorf

Watch as she gets the book thrown at her harder than the mangaka with CP or SA charges

warjoke

Ironic because that feels like something Maomao would actually do

Muffin-zetta

There is a huge part of spice and wolf where holo comes up with a plan to get away with tax evasion

warjoke

I just love our anime hustle queens!

mrsirgrape

She was too busy tasting poison and solving mysteries to do taxes.

jitterscaffeine

Japan takes tax evasion rather seriously, don't they?

Muffin-zetta

Every country does, it’s what the us government got Al Capone on

Fostern01

WHOOOOAAAAH-

alexandrecau

We're talking 47 million yen, that's almost 300 000 US. Not exactly an unserious amount

warjoke

Every country should, actually.

Root_Veggie

When are we getting a Manhwa about ascending to the throne of the God-Emperor One Above All Creation and None Before Them to escape the IRS?

adeadperson23

using that ufotable strat

roronoapedro

Pay your taxes if your country doesn't fund oppression and actually has a welfare state and shit, but a *little* tax evasion is still somewhat based. I assume that they are now paying taxes so it's a haha kinda story.
