My mother in law was proud of her efforts scrubbing my cast iron, but because of the humidity, by the time she'd found me to brag, they had turned red.
Part of the process of using cast-iron pans is seasoning them with oil. It adds flavor, it preserves the pan, and keeps the food from sticking, among other things. Removing the seasoning not only takes away from the flavor of the food, but the soap or whatever chemical used can remain on the pan no matter how well you try to rinse it.
Improper cleaning loses the natural non-stick properties of the pan. A great pan can fry an egg without sticking. When you improperly clean the pan, it loses it’s natural non-stick properties
Usually to clean them, you just wipe it with a wet cloth.
If it’s bad, just soak it in some water then throw some salt on it for a light scrub and wipe it with a wet cloth.
There’s an entire process to reseason them, head over to r/castiron for the right methods. Also some great videos of people finding old cast iron pans, rusted and unusable…they throw them in an industrial ultrasonic or pressure wash them. Once they’re done, they’re probably seasoned. After some hard work they look brand new and ready to go
I think I just took psychic damage
I hate it. Have my upvote. You sick freak.
Now this deserves an award. But that shotgun sound I hear..you may wanna run, dude. Grandma's not playing with you.
