I just wish they'd choose something as the "official" way to write it. When I started working here, I only saw it written as "UVA" from marketing content and on the website. But after a bit, I started seeing faculty writing it as "UVa".
I don't care either way, but it should be consistent when it comes to official university communications and publications.
I have worked at the University of Virginia since the early 90’s. I’ve notice an institutional change from UVa to UVA in recent years. It was for many years UVa only. Writing UVA was like saying campus instead of Grounds…haha. Now I see UVA on all official communications and never see UVa.
As much as I would love to use this as a way to dump on VT, it seems like it is more often done by folks outside of the two schools. Tech has gotten a bit more exposure because of football, and is larger; they may also be more likely to hear UVa than Virginia, and often hear Virginia Tech more than VT or VPISU.
And yet, plenty of people don't see that. The efforts as the flagship school of the commonwealth to be able to simply say Virginia hasn't worked, at least for some people.
It needs to just start being referred to as Virginia (even outside of sports).
All our peers work that way (UMich is Michigan, UC Berkeley is Cal, UNC Chapel Hill is Carolina, etc). The only one that isn’t like that is UVA and UCLA (which makes sense bc Berkeley takes California). So Virginia is rightfully UVA’s and don’t gimme that shit about VT. Its not as old or as elite and widely known as UVA no matter what Tech students say.
Just trying to be special. WM does the same. I remember advisors stressing the importance of writing William and Mary as “William & Mary” on my resume as it looked more impressive with the “ampersand”. 😂
Need to brand the first years with the correct initials to prevent this from happening. You heard me, not the merch but the actual person so this issue is resolved. I’ll be the first in line.
That's interesting. There aren't really any flagship universities that reverse the University of State order. West Virginia University, Colorado University, Are there any more? I know Colorado flip flops between the two, and there is NYU but not sure if that counts as a flagship. Ohio University is there but it definitely isn't the flagship.
Isn't UVa the official way that the Cav Daily styles it? For some reason, I remember that from my time as a news writer.
Yes
No, Cav Daily style is U.Va.
Ahhhh yes I felt like I was just slightly off. Thank you for correcting the record!

They could go the style of UC Berkeley since it's the flagship. Start calling it "Virg".
I’m pretty sure UVa was the official way for years, but they then realized that UVA looks a helluva lot better.
I believe it’s because the states used to be abbreviated with only the first letter capitalized. Like Va, Tx, etc.
But also the Cav Daily sucks
[What about UV?](https://youtu.be/SlUrwzMRsZk?si=MPQXhRlvDFMPWv3u)
Dang it, you beat me to it
Is that a thing? Ive never seen it thankfully
Wait until you see U-Va.
I hate that too! The Post does that. They need to cut it out.
That's garbage. There's no dash in the fully spelled out name, why add it to the abbreviation?
Welcome to the problem

compromise: UvA
That is Universiteit van Amsterdam
This looks like a call of duty clan tag
This would've done insane numbers on yikyak
Not nearly as bad as saying "Virginia" and getting a reply back involving Tech.
Was wearing a V Sabre shirt in an elevator today and someone unironically asked me if I was a hokie…
And yet some people think having a losing football program doesn't hurt our brand
Oof, yeah, this is even worse than what I was talking about. They couldn't distinguish the logo?
In fairness, that’s about the level of literacy we can expect from a vt student

Virginia is literally how UVA (especially the sports) is branded though, is it not? And aside from football, UVA has a way larger reach
And yet, plenty of people don't see that. The efforts as the flagship school of the commonwealth to be able to simply say Virginia hasn't worked, at least for some people.
Every time I am asked where I went, I always say "the University of Virginia". I don't know why. I could say simply "Virginia" or UVA, but I don't.
Wait till you see the abomination that is UofVA or UofVa

You're wrong. Sorry, I won't apologize for this.
[if you postmark something to Va they won't send it](https://pe.usps.com/text/pub28/28apb.htm), capitalize that shit
Nowhere in your link does it say they won’t send it
I like UoV
😂

I love that about that name. You can get really creative styling the ampersand when you are writing freeform.
Clearly you haven’t seen this video from president Jim Ryan. 😉 https://twitter.com/uva/status/1642150337795506181?s=46
I hate that when i google some UVA related info and then they bombard me with VT stuff i have zero interest in.

Then there is UvA -> University of Amsterdam and Uva -> https://www.uvanyc.com/. People just can't have enough of this combo :v
Uva must be a wine bar. You know, "grape"?
how 'bout UvA?
UVA UVa UvA uVA uvA
Why? Do you write it long-form as University of VirginiA?
UVa is what Boomers used to call it
You mean Virginia University?

How about just The University 😎
