IIRC in wild weasel with manned planes they use radar lock-on signatures to determine the location, not the actual rocket. Still really fkin scary idea, but at least theyre not literally dodging missiles.
In the early days of Wild Weasel in Vietnam they did sometimes use visual identification of launches/missile trails and dive bombed them with dumb bombs when not using HAARMs. When they were available, a radar lock was indeed sufficient.
To the best of my knowledge, this is not a repost. There have been 2 more similar videos posted from different drones in the past week, but this one is newly released.
And western media bites on it with "unconfirmed reports that Russian missile took out a Ukranian fighter jet and a UAF batallion yesterday"
UAF commander within hours: "Total Russian misinformation" (as usual).
Western media next day" "A Ukrainian commander stated that Russian misinformation has publicly stated a missile took out a fighter and battalion, but we can not confirm UAF reports.".
This really does happen, daily.
After a year of UAF confirming over hundred of thousands in Russian losses, western media is barely confirming those number are very close or correct and barely now putting in their headlines "cannon fodder" and "meat grinder" (kudos to those who called it from the beginning and stuck with the truth and that even includes Putin supporters). But then again, there are still western military 'experts" who stick to the USSR Cold War "their weapons are better" bs, which will go down with top 20th Century world history crappola like American "Trickle Down Economics" that still claims to this day that less taxes on the rich make the world go around.
Most air to air missiles never “hit” their target - they get very close and explode when their sensor tells them to. These missiles can be aimed at drones, but don’t know when to explode, so they whizz past.
I've seen compilations of Ukraine downing Russian drones with Strela-10. It's clearly doable. My guess is they just are not super consistent in tracking or exploding when it comes to small targets. Also I've no clue how close they have to be for proximity fuse to trigger, but these drone camera perspectives can easily fool you to think the missile is closer than it really is.
I don't know if this is substantiated but I heard a rumour that the Russians were hitting the drones fine using an air defence system, but they changed it due to premature detonations possibly damaging the system, so they modified the sensitivity and since then they've been a number of drones watching missiles fly past while everyone laughs.
I don't know if there's any truth to that?
RF proxy fuzes have trouble with very low RCS targets like drones and cruise missiles because the radar returns are below the radar filter threshold at some angles. This is why the latest Strela 10 9M333 ('latest' being relative, they're from the 90s) missiles have laser proxy fuzes. I'm guessing this was one of the older missiles from their stock without this
I suppose katsaps were not aiming at a civil drone with a Strela-10 and it would actually had been better if the drone "intercepted" it instead of a close call.

Now we know where the anti-aircraft system is.
By now: was.
You'd think they'd try to make smokeless propellant.
No, Valodia told them to smoke less.
This is the first half of wild weasel in a nutshell. Can't imagine piloting a plane and doing this intentionally.

What the hell I dont know, i genuinely just dont know how to react to knowing that now.
I'm also confused at how an F-105 can carry enough payload for gravity bombs AND the pilots massive ferrous balls.

Could be a German donated drone, or Ukrainians just for fun wrote "Luftwaffe" as a screen identifier
I can't stand it when they use words from ww2 germany. I seit all the time, very irritating
…what do you think they call the current german Air-force?
And in Russia they declared this a hit for 1 drone, 2 F-16, 1 F-22 and 3 Abrams Tanks
Don't forget they also took three prisoners with just this single missile
And sunk the entire Ukrainian fleet
Awe making up enemies just to kill them.
And a starlink satellite.

Russian anti-air is only good at shooting down Russian jets.
🤣👍 cool comment
Now X marks the spot
Small and nimble is key. Juke the missile.
Faulty proximity fuse?
There missile are made to hit something bigger like helicopters they see a drone they still gonna thing the target is far away so juked 🤣

The footage in this war is fucking insane
if you listen closely, you can hear the drone operator laughing his ass off.
That is fast.
I love to see LUFTWAFFE wrtten...
Warum!?
DARUM!
Ok. Lass mich
I can vouch for this. In Project Reality, I often launched Strela missiles at enemy CAS, and they always missed. The enemy CAS never did.
Project reality is a video game
You take that back.
Sorry please forgive.
Aren't AA missiles supposed to explode next to a target rather than hit it directly?
Yea if I had to guess the proximity fuse didn’t get a large enough return on the drone to detonate so now it sails off into a field somewhere
Imagine sending a million dollar missile (or more, idk) to destroy a $500 drone. Ukraine completely changed the whole game...
I also think drones will be the reason why we will 100% see lasers be introduced in warfare in our lifetimes.
They already are. They have a role limited to dazzling and hitting low and slow ISR drones, but they’ve been in use.
Show that to every warthunder guy who says strela cant be dodged xD
We all made the sound effects when the missile flew past
What costs more, the missile or the drone?
Even if it does hit, is it cost effective? Now they expose their location as well.
Did a fresh target of opportunity just present itself to the drone operator?
Wow, this video is wild
Bye bye AA System
lol love it, each missile is with dozens of drones.
The drone probably has far too little metal to trigger the rocket's proximity fuse.

Meanwhile the [Missile](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xNkJ8Dis4E)
That was surprisingly close for such a small target. Didn’t know you could target drones with missiles.
FU orc biatch!
That is cool - who'd have thought we'd be looking at that.
The speed they travel at is incredible.
PATRIOT missiles don’t miss! Russian military hardware is garbage!
Patriot do miss but a lower rate. Ruzzia military is something else
The only thing Russian Air Defense Systems are good for is shooting down civilian airliners.
And ruzzia helicopter and plane
And private jets flying to Moscow.
Prigozhin will be miss
Well the missile sure didn't
Not really.
