Mustelids are actually more closely related to bears than they are to rodents if I remember correctly.
Correction, I *was* remembering wrong. It's seals they're relatively closely related to, though they are still more closely related to bears than rodents as Mustelids are still members of the order Carnivoria while rodents have their own separate order.
I've always called them tube rats, knowing full well they aren't rodents, I was happy to pick up limosine rodents as a new name for them. Now I get Noodle Bears as well, talk about a double win!
Cat snake is still my fav term. I’d love one, but we don’t have them in Australia, just a wider variety of chickens. Eg; giggle chicken or stilt chicken, bastard chicken or even crackhead chicken.

Ah, common mistake. Young beavers can look a lot like groundhogs. But that, actually, is a sea ottor! They look very similar to beavers, but they are not good carpenters. A beaver would have built a ladder to escape.

Thank you, I should have qualified that the one that fell into my dryer vent and eventually into my dryer was a baby. You are correct the adult mink in the brook near my house are much bigger. I've never seen a skoat, maybe we don't have them in Nova Scotia
We have them in NY and Colorado but they are typically very shy and like higher elevations. Most I’ve seen was working at ski areas and ski areas have a difficulty not getting infested by mice so the stoats figure out where their food is at. Like probably against the health code but hey they eat the mice so we leave em be.
Yeah but then those 2 cats may become friends and then you gotta send in a 3rd and so on. I mean unless you had an unlimited supply of cats I don’t see that going well.
Someone in my community has one of these living in his house.. said he wondered why his mouse problem just stopped… went in to do maintenance this little guy was running around like a pet, said he doesnt mind it staying if it keeps the mice away
> to loose your fingers
Did you mean to say "lose"?
Explanation: Loose is an adjective meaning the opposite of tight, while lose is a verb.

Not legal to keep a stoat as a pet in many countries, like the US, but ferrets are relatively similar looking and make popular pets. It's legal to have either in the UK but it's recommended to register the pet here - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/ferret-and-other-mustelinae-register/guidance-ferret-and-other-mustelinae-keepers-register
Like, in my heart I know that petting a weasel is a bad idea. I have seen what they can do to flesh. ^(I still wanna pet the little furry snakes. Maybe I will find a friendly one...)
Domesticated Ferret breeds are quite pettable. Not the easiest pets (they're stinky noodles, they get into everything, they steal and cache anything they can, they can be hard to house train, and they really need somewhere to dig) but very cute.
They're my absolute favorite. I think it really depends on how you care for them though. I've known quite a few people with ferrets and they're definitely not always stinky. It just really depends on how you care for them. I will agree with you though if they're not easy pets. They're pretty high maintenance, especially if you don't want them, or their cage/your house, to smell. They also require a lot of time and energy.
They're also expensive. I don't even just mean the cost of them, which it's a lot of money to get a decent setup and a couple ferrets (preferably they would have at least one companion). When I looked into it, when all was said and done, It would have cost me like $1,000 to get a good setup and 2 ferrets. Then there's their monthly maintenance bill. As much as I want them I don't think I'll ever get it.
Yep. I love them.
The care does change the stinkyness, but there's always some smell.
Personally I don't have ferrets, I have birds. Even higher maintenance than ferrets.
We have 4 ferrets and yes the care does matter! Very slight musky smell when kept clean. They are so awesome though! Fun fact a group of ferrets is called a business
Oof, I couldn't do birds. I like them but between my cats and the work caring for them, I couldn't do it.
I really do love pocket pets though, which I'll include ferrets in here although I don't know if they're actually considered a pocket pet. Yea there is some smell but it's not as bad as people try to make it out to be. Since I couldn't get a ferret, which my kids also wanted, we compromised and got guinea pigs.
In my ignorance I thought they would be basically be like big hamsters... Well I was wrong. They are so much more work, and money, then I thought they would be. And there is definitely a smell from their cage but as long as you clean it often it's really not bad at all. My issue is I can't find a water bottle that doesn't leak so it ends up destroying their bedding and it brings a worse smell than there'd normally be. I really kind of wished I'd saved up double the money and gotten the ferrets instead.
Same. If this had been me in the video I probably would have gotten fucked up. They're just so cute! But no honestly I would have thought this was a ferret, like maybe somebody's pet got lost. Unless it acted aggressively I probably would have tried to pet it and maybe lost a finger lol. I mean look at how it comes out of the wall. It didn't look mean or aggressive it just looked adorable.
Ermine are much bigger ! The other name for Ermine are Mink and its not quite killing for fun. Cats do notably play with their prey items while Mink do not.
Mink being small predators which are often times prey themselves in the wild can go without food for a long time. Their adrenal systems are also absolutely juiced ( as with most mustelids ! They are from the same family as badgers, wolverines and otters ! )
When they encounter prey- especially in high quantities their brain goes into overdrive and they just start killing wantonly intending to go back for more food later. This behavior in nature is the rather rare surplus killing
This is most notably done when they break into livestock areas for say chickens or ducks as the area being full of prey that can’t escape sends them into a little fuzzy berserker frenzy.
But again our friend in the Video is a stoat as pointed out by another commenter ! They don’t tend to excess kill much but they *do* funny dances when they hunt.
I Hope this was informative and I wish you a great day
I think you have that mixed up a bit. Ermine is actually another name for a stoat. Minks do not get a white winter coat either.
https://www.britannica.com/animal/ermine-mammal
Now, I've had my fair share of run-ins with pests over the years - rats, mice, cockroaches, you name it. But this latest surprise really took the cake.
So there I was, minding my own business in my living room, when I heard a strange scratching sound coming from the wall. At first, I thought it was just one of my neighbors being a little too enthusiastic with their power tools. But as the scratching persisted, I knew something wasn't right.
So I did what any sensible person would do - I grabbed a saw and started cutting a hole on the wall. And what do you know, out popped a weasel! Now, I don't know about you, but I never expected to find a weasel in my wall. I mean, who even knew they could climb walls?
Now, some people might be scared or disgusted by this unexpected visitor. But me? I was impressed. I mean, this weasel had some serious skills.
But of course, I knew I couldn't let the weasel stay in my wall. So I cut the hole and safely removed the little guy. And you know what? I felt a little sad to see him go. I mean, he may have been a surprise pest, but he was a damn impressive one.
And you know what? It just goes to show that life is full of surprises. You never know what you're going to find in your own home. Maybe next time it'll be a kangaroo in the attic. Who knows?
I would be kinda stoked if a weasel was the answer, tbh. Obviously it sucks to have to cut the wall open, but out of all the answers, weasels are badass and adorable.
Surprisingly all the Karens I have known are nothing like a Karen. One of my sorors from college named Karen was one of the chillest, sweetest people I knew. Everyone loved her because she was just a good friend. Our sorority was attached to an organization, and she would always hang outside the building with everyone, always good for conversation. She would think it was hilarious that Karen had become such a negative thing now and I can just imagine her mocking it.
Stoat! Sounds like stout. Ermines also. Fun fact, they do not like their fur to be dirty at all and that's why royal people used to make scarfs out of those animals.
Just checked comments then did research, definitely an Ermine, same family (weasels, Mustela), different species. Still cute little bastard none the less!

Was that a weasel or a ferret?
It’s a stoat, it is related to the weasel.
Love all the limousine rodents 🤟
New favorite term
Capybara are just SUV rodents
I kinda want a capybara
They are not rodents though
Correct, they are mustelids, which are a kind of cousin to seals. Edit: thanks to those who helped correct me 🙂
limousine mustelids just doesn’t have the same ring to it like limousine rodent
Not even close to rodents
Really? I thought most of those (racoon family, rodents, mustelids, etc) were actually pretty close geneticallly.
Cool. Noodle Bears has ring to it
Ferrets, stoats, and weasels are now called Noodle Bears. Make it so.
r/properanimalnames
I've always called them tube rats, knowing full well they aren't rodents, I was happy to pick up limosine rodents as a new name for them. Now I get Noodle Bears as well, talk about a double win!
Cool, that's really interesting!
There's an addendum to my previous comment now that elaborates further.
i think you're confusing mustelids with lagomorphs. lagomorp is the family of the rabbit and it is a close cousin to rodents.
I might like that better than cat-snake.
Cat snake is still my fav term. I’d love one, but we don’t have them in Australia, just a wider variety of chickens. Eg; giggle chicken or stilt chicken, bastard chicken or even crackhead chicken. Ah, the noble stoat...
Total misplay.
This stoat is gorgeous too.
Immediately went looking for this comment
it's stotally different
Whereas a weasel is weasely wecognised.
Cool. Thanks for telling me about it.
It was the *least* ~~weasel~~ they could do....
I learned something new, never knew there was such something called a stoat.
The only reason I know about Stoats is because of the Redwall books.
For me it's the game Inscryption
Ah yes a person of culture, finally. Love that series
*Brian Jacques and Martin the Warrior stand up and begin a slow clap from the back of the room...*
The difference between a stoat and a weasel is that ones weasel-y recognised and the others stoat-ally different
It's a cutie.
It’s a noodle boy
That my friend is a tiny little killer. Does it for fun.
Fuck yeah, new friend
Came out like “good morning gentlemen🎩
He really should be wearing that top hat
The most wholesome comment here....good for you random redditor!
Poor cat must have been stuck there for ages - seems to have lost a lot of weight…
I mean this is clearly an iguana
No it's a beaver. Iguanas have spines on their heads
No, it's a pelican. Beavers have big flat tails.
Well you can't really see. It could be flattish. Maybe it's an adolescent
Well, obviously, you're not a golfer. It's a groundhog.
Ah, common mistake. Young beavers can look a lot like groundhogs. But that, actually, is a sea ottor! They look very similar to beavers, but they are not good carpenters. A beaver would have built a ladder to escape.
Actually its not an otter since it doesnt have webbed hands and feet. Clearly this is a baby tiger.
It’s a bat. You can tell by the way it was upside down.
No it is a common misconception, the animal is actually a brontosaur
Perhaps it's a river otter
>Well, obviously, you're not a golfer. Nice marmet
Gopher
Clearly a mountain whale

No it’s a platypus. Pelicans have chin pouches.
nah it's a mink
I think it's actually an ermine/stoat
Nah it's probably a baby cow
it’s a freakin baby whale jay
da Vinci's The Lady with an ....
It's a mink/ermine I found one in my dryer
Minks are way bigger it’s. Stote, but since it’s in its winter colormorph it would be called an ermine. They hunt mice like a lion hunts gazelle
Thank you, I should have qualified that the one that fell into my dryer vent and eventually into my dryer was a baby. You are correct the adult mink in the brook near my house are much bigger. I've never seen a skoat, maybe we don't have them in Nova Scotia

They are amazing I have one in my house. My mouse problem and rat problem from my livestock are not an issue.
An albino hairy beaver, you say? Now those are a rarity.
I prefer my beavers to be hairless
No the spines are in their backs
No, that's clearly a rat that ate a snake whole!!
Are you blind that's clearly a squirrel
Covered in dust bunnies
That's Rikki-Tikki-Tavi of course. He just killed a cobra for you.
:’(
my favorite movie as a little kid
Indeed
You’re absolutely right. Poor thing is all skin and bones. I hope they nursed it back to health or took it to a cat shelter.
Cats do not abide by the laws of nature
Y'all are Wrong that's a snake 🐍
Yeah but, snakes don't have armpits so it must be a hedgehog..
It's a long cat
Pole Cats are always that thin!
It’s skinny as a pole.
*Pole-cat
Weird looking albino meerkat
so much weight it became a weasel...
Everybody knows the only way to get a cat out of your wall is to send another one in after it.
Cat in a wall, eh? Now you’re talking my language
Must’ve flattened itself out and slipped right through a seam in the wall
Cats don't abide by the laws of nature.
awww beat me to it
Jesus Christ Dee, your timing is terrible!
typical bird timing
Yeah but then those 2 cats may become friends and then you gotta send in a 3rd and so on. I mean unless you had an unlimited supply of cats I don’t see that going well.

I loved my pet ferrets. Little thieves though. I wonder how much weed is still under my parents china cabinet.
They're related to ferrets, so you probably could, but I wouldn't recommend it. They're bitey and they stink.
In an enclosed space. It doesn't look like a cub, it probably won't get used to humans fast, if at all.
That thing is one of the most murderous animals on the planet. No joke, they go out and murder for fun. I think it’s called an Ermine.

It’s a stoat. But they are insanely strong. They kill rabbits 10x their weight and drag them back to their dens up to a kilometre away over obstacles
I assume its a pet stoat they put in themselves for tiktok? A wild one would have run away hard as soon as it saw Humans on the other side.

According to legend, if you hold an ermine to the side of your head and listen closely you can hear what it sounds like to get attacked by an ermine.
That made me laugh so hard 🤣
Nice to see PO3 made it out of the card again
your stoat stands unopposed

Stoat is coming back from Narnia
Why, hello there.

I saw one of these up close running through the snow once. Cutest little thing ever.
Jim wasn't lying, there *are* ferrets in the walls!
I thought it was a Marten
It’s a varmint. They spawn naturally in walls of the world.
His name is Fret.

Are these things brave? Cuz it just climbed right out of that hole like "Sup guys, I gotta get to my 9:00a.m. class, excuse me."
It’s a ferret or some kind of weasel definitely not what I expected.
A cat? Even dumber than the challengers i see, they can actually know what animals are what, And thats only because its clearly labeled on the card.
Hmm stoats look pretty cool actually like a ferret.
And here is Stanley Stoat with the 6pm mews…
He's just a lil guy!!
That looks exactly like our worksite mouse killer we named Milky. In the summer his name changes to Chocolate Milky.
It’s a ferret!!!!!! they are so cute but they will steal your keys they love to play with keys so watch out for your keys lol
Stoat! Sounds like stout. Ermines also. Fun fact, they do not like their fur to be dirty at all and that's why royal people used to make scarfs out of those animals.
