Ouch. This much damage from just one drop? I’m still keeping my AVP because I use it daily but I hope future generations of AVP wouldn’t be so fragile.
Exactly, there will be many times more people complaining how their AVP keeps powering off if it has MagSafe.
People don’t realize how weak the MagSafe magnet will need to be for AVP since It is much lighter than even a MacBook Air and the MacBook also has rubber feet that create more friction for MagSafe to overcome. People are not also moving their MacBook around while it is attached to the wall outlet and lastly, the MacBook has internal battery and the AVP doesn’t. MagSafe on AVP is a bad idea
Completely different. The MacBooks have a battery onboard so if MagSafe disconnects, your MacBook isn’t turning off in the middle of you doing something.
Yeah, something that gives you 20 mins of sleep/standby would be nice. Even with 1 battery, it would be nice to have some time to get to an outlet if you were in the middle of something.
They *really* don’t want the headset to ever just cut to black/turn off instantly. This is evident with how robust the locking mechanism for the power cable is on the headset end itself. If the other end was MagSafe, it would circumvent all of that. They have a clear priority here and have decided to make tradeoffs to get it.
This. Imagine if it was MagSafe. So now the battery hits the floor, your view cuts to black causing disorientation, and if you’re in motion while this happens, you’re probably gonna fall and end up hurting yourself, smashing the vision pro, and your battery just fell from 3-4ft. MagSafe would’ve been a terrible idea.
A couple of 18650s is really heavy, but there might be other solutions. Either way, there will always be a trade off and someone has to decide if the trade off is worth it and not everyone will ever agree.
Power density is directly proportional to the size (and weight) of a battery. As devices get bigger and require more power, so do batteries.
Microchips might get smaller and faster, but they require more power. So there is s tradeoff.
> but they require more power.
This part is wrong, as microprocessors get smaller they get more power efficient.
The trade off that ends up happening is either increasing the workload which negates energy saved or a smaller battery is used which results in the same.
The microchips require more power because when they get denser, instead of making a smaller processor with the same capabilities, they tend to make the same size processor with better capabilities. So in the end you just end up with more transistors.
The weight issue other cited here is legit, but it might well have been offset if they’d incorporated batteries into the band instead of the machine itself.
I’m sure they explored that option quite thoroughly though, given how long this thing was in development. The external battery is an unusually clunky solution for Apple in the current era, and practically reeks of “least bad option.”
Nahhhhhh, I like the locking mechanism. There’s been a few times the battery cable has caught on a door or drawer handle and pulled the battery out of my pocket. It just gives my head a little tug, dangles below my knee, and then I go “oh” and put it back in my hoodie pocket
Then you’d need a high discharge lithium ion battery strapped to your face. Much fun if it ever incinerates and you don’t notice because you’re immersed with headphones on.
You don’t need the battery to be on the headset for it to be MagSafe…they can keep the existing form factor and have the connection to the battery pack be magnetic (on either end, but my preference would be the end that is on the battery rather than the one that connects into the headset…would prevent accidental disconnects).
MagSafe only works because the macbooks have their own battery that can take over when the cord disconnects. Power-cuts aren’t good for computing devices.
I don’t disagree, I guess it’s a design decision whether the greater concern is more accidental power cuts because of a magnetic connection vs falls because of being dragged by a pocketed battery.
My response was more to clarify that using MagSafe or not would not force the battery to be on the headset itself.
Whatever internal specification Apple has for MagSafe most certainly doesn’t even allow for the possibility of using it without a battery, so any talk of its theoretical possibility is a moot point. Apple would never release a device that is susceptible to power cuts like you’re imagining.
Have you thought about making your neck magsafe instead? /s
But seriously, is there a market for an aftermarket extension cable which has a break away component?
https://preview.redd.it/ujuh6rd41ptc1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c4cbca5d807d4e1c6d595a95d9fca43be0bf0eeb
Mine fell on a hard floor the same way luckily it was only about 3-4 foot fall and it only got a few small scratches. I’m still gonna go see if Apple can replace it. I DONT have Apple care my Amex Platinum credit card insures accidental damages up to $10k per item 🤓
Link for Credit Card 😉 [https://americanexpress.com/en-us/referral/platinum-card?ref=FRANCGGTZO&xl=cp01](https://americanexpress.com/en-us/referral/platinum-card?ref=FRANCGGTZO&xl=cp01)
honestly, it's barely noticeable.
sure, in a sub full of hyper-vigilant AVP owners, we'll notice any scuff or scratch.
but to anyone else, that looks good as new 🤷♂️
It does. View is little distorted because the cracks are by the lenses but it worked….
I put it away from sadness and don’t wanna look at it. I did a little research and it looks like Apple Store will just give you another unit (I assume they swap the parts to it)
I never thought it’d happen to me, and here we are lol
I was about to cancel it. I got it day one and I’m like, see… 2 months morning happened, Stop wasting money. Was going to cancel it any day lol.
I’m def keeping it now.
I usually wait until the 60th day to buy it on the monthly plan, but I think I’m going to pull the trigger because I’d be crushed if I broke mine. At least I saved $50 by waiting lol
Dude pull the entire glass front off of the unit, it will work wonders and wont have any glass in way of cams no which could in turn give you even better visuals, you could even go a step further and get the plastic front cover replacement and put in place of glass.
Hm, that’s interesting. Taking off the glass entirely *might* be okay. It would reduce the weight significantly and also look cool as hell.
But it leaves a ton of sensors and other hardware exposed that Apple definitely covered on purpose. Even the plastic shields I’ve seen would fail to protect the cameras and whatnot, because they have intentional cutouts for them.
We don’t have any way of knowing if the glass is just there as a fancy dust cover, of if the sensors are calibrated to it in specific ways.
The cameras on the bottom are looking through areas where the glass has a specific *curve*, for example, so they might be designed to either take advantage of or offset an associated lensing effect.
Even if the glass is just a dust cover, it’s a pretty thick and tightly sealed one. The bleeding-edge components behind it might well be more vulnerable to damage from things like heat, light, humidity and dust than what you’d find on the back of your phone.
And it’s not like they’re designed to be *cleaned* by the user either.
I really want to be able to do this though, I do have to admit. In terms of aesthetics, I’ll take industrial over streamlined any day.
I believe it can work really well but if you do end up testing with the glass off before sending it back please let me know your results as I truly believe it could actually be a huge bonus for the device. If I ever break my glass I will 1000% pull it off to test lol
I usually keep the battery on the couch for this reason. I was being silly earlier and helped put groceries away with the avp so i forgot it in my pocket
Your repair process will be the following at the Apple Store:
- Verify serial number
- Ask if you want to pick up the repair/replacement in store or shipped to your chosen address. Wait 3-5 business days for repair/replacement. If shipped to you, they will process a charge hold for your care+ deductible. If picking up in-store, you will pay when you pick it up. They cannot send it to another store and they cannot change the address you want it shipped to.
No store actually repairs the vision pro. It’s gonna be like an iPad, repair = replacement. I would be shocked if they had vision pro repair unit to replace it then and there. Has to be shipped.
Yep this is what I keep saying why tf did they do that, it helps to counter the weight of the device when you put it on the back like quest pro, why did they think it was better to make an accessory item that can dangle from the headset it’s so dumb.
Walked into a metal suspension rod I couldn’t see a couple weeks ago. I was in a dark attic using Magic Room to see through my walls, so that I could quickly pinpoint the location an electrician had to go to install a lamp in the ceiling below. Hurt my face much more than the AVP.
Trick worked great though. #worthit
If I were able to own one I would:
A) Wire it through my shirt if I want to put the battery in my pocket and walk around
B) Not put the battery in my pocket (!)
Parents forget their babies in their cars because they can't see them (reversed seat). Don't rely on just remembering what to do....
I cannot imagine people just mindlessly putting the battery in their pocket, and not worry about a loose wire....
Sorry man! I did that one time and I was fortunate to have my head cover for it. It fell from top of the counter and all I heard was a big bang. During that time I didn’t have the AppleCare but I definitely bought one the next day after that. Some people think its not going to happen to them but accidents can sneak up on anyone just like that. Also, since the beginning when I started using the AVP I just got into a habit of putting the head cover all the time. I know it can be tedious but I’m just not comfortable laying the AVP around without the cover. Keep us posted about the repair and best of luck!!!
Yep. I should have put it on no matter what. I thought to myself lemme lay it nicely on the couch I’ll be right back.
Then next thing you you I feel a tug and bam. I realized what was tugging but the avp was flung (not drop, but flung) because of the tug.
Dang. I would have cried and probably call off from work to get my AVP fix if that happens to me. Because I won’t be able to sleep. I’m glad you have the AppleCare to get it fix.
Sorry this happened. And if this has been covered already sorry. But contact the online support team as well. They’ve got an express replacement if you’re eligible for it. They’ll send you a new one right away and you’ve got a little time to shop back the old one.
Oof, I'm sorry that's such a bummer! I think they send these out for repair, I think that's like a 3-5 day turnaround time. If you live near an Apple Store you can just take it in and have them ship it out for you, if you don't AppleCare should ship you a box to mail it out for repair in. If they do swap it out, it's such a new product I doubt they have any 'refurbished' ones, it'll likely be brand new but they may not be able to explicitly state that.
Source: used to work for the Genius Bar (it's been like 6 years so some things may have changed).
This battery is the downfall of this product. I didn’t mind it at first, but between the cable on the battery and the cable to the power outlet, got too many damn cables. I’ve started catching myself making mistakes that lead to this.
Yeahh this is why I never have the battery pack in my pocket when sitting down now. It’s so easy to accidentally take the headset off while the battery is still in your pocket. Happened to me twice but luckily the glass didn’t shatter like this; only a small chip near the bottom left camera. If the chip were to be just a few millimeter to the right, it would have obstructed the camera in that area. Super lucky on this one, thank goodness
https://preview.redd.it/f61n1lctmntc1.jpeg?width=1645&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=38580002e07d48edc3dfe4348946976b30d0df45
This is the chip from mine. Barely missed the camera. Recommend you get a TPU screen guard like mine, just for more peace of mind, if it ever drops again.
Hope you get your replacement soon! Luckily you live in states (I’m assuming) where you could get Apple Care. I live in a third world country; if my Vision Pro were to crack like yours, I would ball my eyes out. Pretty much garbage at that point.
In store repair/replace is tricky and will vary by store. This thing is still so new many stores have no idea what to do. I had a faulty fan on mine that was so loud you couldn’t even use the thing. Apple Store refused to touch the device, claimed they would only replace it if they could recreate the issue without touching it..
They then tried to tell me that they would not replace the device but instead would mail it out, have it torn down, attempt to be repaired and I would be nailed with the cost and was unable to give even a rough window on replacement. I said unacceptable, device needs to be replaced clearly, I had to argue for a good 30 mins to have them replace it with a new unit. Whatever happens make sure they don’t mess you around, it seems my local store didn’t really care to deal with it well. I filled out the feedback form that was emailed to me and received a call back from the store profusely apologizing, they did tell me the process shouldn’t be difficult at all but most employees are still learning the policies for Vision Pro so there may be some road bumps. Overall wish you the best of luck getting a quick replacement!
Man, I’m sorry to see that, but I can relate. This is not on you. This is on Apple. I have a quest three and I use it tethered battery and I can’t count how many times I’ve done the exact same thing. Luckily the quest can take a fall.
Why did they make it like this? I really want an AVP but this is one of several things giving me pause. Why a big piece of fragile glass? Help me understand this because it only seems stupid.
With my Q3 I take it off and literally throw it in a drawer. Plastic seems like the ideal material in terms of strength and weight.
Usually they will give you a new one and take your old one, repair it, and sell it as refurbished. Makes it a lot easier for everyone and you get a new one right away. Unless they don’t have your exact specs in stock, in that case they’d order one and you’ll wait for it to arrive then make the swap.
According to website, for a cracked cover glass, it’s $799 when you don’t have an AppleCare+, $299 when you have it. So it will cost $299 for you unless there are other damages and as far as I know you will get the replacement device.
Sad to see this but glad you have Apple care+. what is the process like? Will you be getting the glass fixed or get the entire new device as a replacement due to the complexity of the repair ?
I got one of the clip-on holders for the battery and clip the battery to the back of the dual-strap. No more need to put it in my pocket. HOWEVER for longer sessions I often plug in the battery puck so I’m STILL tethered to the wall.
Ouch! that totally sucks! I am so sorry you are going through this! Glad you still have the AC+
This made me wonder… Those clear covers they are selling all over the place. They are a semi-solid clear plastic that is supposed to protect the lens. I wonder if it would have done anything to protect.
I am guessing no. They seem to be a bit thin and just a piece of plastic/rubber. But I'm not a chemical engineer and wouldn't know for sure, but maybe there is a type of plastic that could absorb the kinetic energy of the impact?
Has anyone seen this type of cover in action?
https://preview.redd.it/2b1b20qswktc1.png?width=550&format=png&auto=webp&s=ce79973083285ece4ea790a2a1550a0dcc4535fc
I’ve seen those. They seem ugly and I’m not sure if there is enough cushion to protect it. Maybe scratch resistance… this thing went flying though man. I was walking and it just came off the couch and not drop but flung to the floor LOL
The way you describe it… It's like a 30 car pile up accident… you don't want to look at the horrible carnage, but the insane way it happened you can't help but want to see it!!! LOL
I have one of these on mine, don't think it'll help from a large drop, but I do feel like it'll help prevent the massive shatter from the safety glass breaking on a small impact point. Better safe than sorry I'd say.
I'm still thinking about getting one
they aren't expensive
edit: Just bought one =) Amazon… regular price $19.99 after the discount, coupon and the additional coupon, $4.27 with tax. For that much, I'll check it out.
I like it. I had to cut out the vent part on the bottom to match the holes, but it wasn't hard and I think it's worth the protection. Really doesn't look that bad either.
Just bought one =) Amazon… regular price $19.99 after the discount, coupon and the additional coupon, $4.27 with tax. For that much, I'll check it out.
I think out of all the Apple products, AVP makes the most sense to have Apple care for. It’s just too expensive and niche to not have protection. Maybe in future generations it won’t be as bad due to easily available parts and resources on how to fix/replace commonly broken parts but for now Apple care is 100% necessary in my opinion. Anyway sorry this happened. Let us know what action Apple takes. Very interested to see if it gets replaced with a brand new one.

Milliseconds before destruction as the cat watches it unravel and doesn’t even give me a heads up 😤
I will post with an update on Thursday. I’m curious myself.
That being said I was going to skip on it thinking I’ll be careful. Wife insisted I get it so I did.
When it broke she looked at me and says aren’t you glad you got care plus? I said yeah and I almost cancelled it. Her jaw dropped. lol
Same thing as the other post. I can’t believe how you manage a $3500 device. It’s like playing around with a Sony Fx3 with a 24mm 1.4 lens.
I know things happen, but dude …come on!!!
I mean… I used my Fujifilm X-Pro3 to take photos of the eclipse. 500mm reflector lens pointed directly at the sun.
A boat is safe when sitting at the dock in a harbor - but that’s not why boats are made.
That’s why you don’t make the battery a separate accessory for this exact reason, battery should have been attached to the device to balance it out like quest pro, I’m so glad I saved my money cause this AVP has been one of the biggest fails the more posts I see about it
Lmao that is not the problem I have everything from Apple and was planning on getting it, also my tv in my gaming setup is the same price as this headset so yes I can afford it but choose not to get it after seeing what a piece of shit product it is.
Ouch. This much damage from just one drop? I’m still keeping my AVP because I use it daily but I hope future generations of AVP wouldn’t be so fragile.
I wish it was MagSafe. I’d rather it accidentally disconnect than get dragged.

Yeah, something that gives you 20 mins of sleep/standby would be nice. Even with 1 battery, it would be nice to have some time to get to an outlet if you were in the middle of something.
Surprising it doesn’t have it, even if it was tiny, say 30secs. Would be convenient.
Nah, magsafe is a horrible idea as this unit doesnt have an internal battery like a macbook lol
Says the entire universe. WtF were they thinking I’m wondering / and how has this not been fixed via a 3rd party yet?
They *really* don’t want the headset to ever just cut to black/turn off instantly. This is evident with how robust the locking mechanism for the power cable is on the headset end itself. Yes but that happens significantly less than if it was MagSafe, which basically invites users to use that as an “off” switch.

That’s great about American Express coverage but it’s only for within 90 days, right?
Mark my words, that’s going to be the look the cool kids are after a couple of years from now.
Like ripped jeans right lol
More like my daughter’s perpetually cracked iPhone screen. Status symbol.
Balling so hard you can afford to treat your gadgets like sh*t

Sorry that sucks! The real question… does it still work?

So it’s useable like this? I’d just leave it this way. Totally cosmetic.
Yes, just pull glass from front of unit, take glass completely off. There are videos on it during stress test
Kinda. There is a line on the right side on passthrough also now tv screens flicker
Did that once, but luckily for me, my floor is carpeted. I always remember now, if I take it off, to put the battery right beside it.
I usually keep the battery on the couch for this reason. I was being silly earlier and helped put groceries away with the avp so i forgot it in my pocket
same here, mine also dropped and also on the carpet.
Does anyone sell “Croakies” style loop so you can just hang the unit from your neck when not using it? Too many people are doing this.

Some YouTube videos on aviation. Nothing crazy lol
I’ve been really into pilot debrief
Mentour pilot and pilot debrief are my two faves.
Mentour is awesome, I’ve also gotten into watching Noel Phillips and his crazy journeys via obscure airlines and planes lately
seems like you were watching the best content
Oh no, apple care+?
Apple care is important!

Yeah. I would have been ok on the strap. Or like I said, at least make it where it can disconnect. A good yank like this would have def unplugged it
That sucks bro
Big time. I really wish I can get it replaced tomorrow because it’s bugging me. 300 dollar mistake…
Express replacement service could be an option you want to consider

They will do a full replacement maybe even right there in the store
It will likely get sent to offsite repair facility
Does it still work the same but just have a smashed glass front? Curious…
Yeah it works. The pass through it little wonky because the cracks are all over including the cameras
Ah… didn’t think about the pass through. Good luck getting it fixed. Wasn’t sure if it was just cosmetic
Cosmetic but pass through it little wonky lol. It’s killing me. I wish my Apple Store was 24/7 so I can get it fixed now
How I feel… unfortunately we’re going out of town for the day lol
Oh man. I don’t think I could handle the wait. But I guess you have to do what you gotta do.
Make sure you don’t put the bra on while it’s still plugged in I’m thinking
Happened to me too. I was lucky I had the cozy on the front as it dropped right onto concrete.
I will always put it on when I’m not using it from now on. Lesson learned.
You’ll most likely get a new piece
Sorry this happened. And if this has been covered already sorry. But contact the online support team as well. They’ve got an express replacement if you’re eligible for it. They’ll send you a new one right away and you’ve got a little time to shop back the old one.
I just went through exactly this. They're probably going to replace your head-unit. You'll probably have to pay the deductible.
I’ve done that twice now fortunately only a scuff even though I dropped it on hardwood both times
Ski season ended early :(
Nice smash
Wired battery + glass visor. Apple knew what the tradeoffs were and that folks would blame themselves if the glass broke.
Does it work?
It does. I used it a little after…
This battery is the downfall of this product. I didn’t mind it at first, but between the cable on the battery and the cable to the power outlet, got too many damn cables. I’ve started catching myself making mistakes that lead to this.
That's why I do the battery strapped to the solo band. It's so much easier and safer. Just can't lie down with it on
AC is 500 and glass deductible is 300. No AC repair is 800. So I guess for AC if you break it twice it’s worth it. I’m still in window, debating it.
You can just peel that off and it’s fine if you didn’t actually crack the screen underneath
Honestly that should have been an easy fix. Maybe make those magnetic too
I know it should almost be like a zaag shield you can just pop off
It’s there to protect the inner screen thing anyways.
I don’t either. I got up earlier with it on and forgot to take it back out of pocket.

Yeah I think I will. I wonder if it woulda saved it
Hope you get your replacement soon! Luckily you live in states (I’m assuming) where you could get Apple Care. I live in a third world country; if my Vision Pro were to crack like yours, I would ball my eyes out. Pretty much garbage at that point.
Yeah I hear ya man. There. 4 Apple stores within 30 mins of me lol.
oof did the same but fortunately it landed on a carpet...
Ouch. I hope your credit card has some accidental coverage.
Death by snu snu
Not to be that guy, but Jobs would have brought his smashed AVP out to engineers and told them to fix this shit.
I wish
I wonder how much the deductible is to get fixed
I don’t believe you. This looks like it was dropped from a skyscraper. Look at the impact area.
lol scroll around here. You’ll see the second before impact 🥲
Oh my god! lol. One day we will look back at Gen 1 and laugh at the fact that we literally have a freaking wire attached a giant battery pack lol.
No MagSafe on these I guess
F
Now it’s custom bro!
this happen to me at Starbucks
If you peel off the front layer, it will still work.
Cautionary tale if I ever read one.
Just for anyone here who doesn’t have an AVP and not sure what it’s supposed to look like: the glass is supposed to be smooth and not shattered.
man extended battery is so bad , they should included that in back pf head as counterweight
![gif](giphy|tfUW8mhiFk8NlJhgEh|downsized)
Usually they will give you a new one and take your old one, repair it, and sell it as refurbished. Makes it a lot easier for everyone and you get a new one right away. Unless they don’t have your exact specs in stock, in that case they’d order one and you’ll wait for it to arrive then make the swap.
The fragile front glass and the short battery cord is such a bad combo!
We’re gonna find out today when I stop by at Apple store
Dang I feel for ya
I got one of the clip-on holders for the battery and clip the battery to the back of the dual-strap. No more need to put it in my pocket. HOWEVER for longer sessions I often plug in the battery puck so I’m STILL tethered to the wall.
Can you put a link for me? I don’t like the dual strap, that’s the thing. I really like the single one. It is so comfortable for me

No I mean the battery mount. lol
I think the clip is made by Belkin

Posts like these is making me lean towards next generation
I phone 20 years later still breaking and more fragile lol
iphone doesn’t cost 4k or $500 to repair
Oh right. It is ok for it to break if it doesn’t cost 4K. That’s exactly what we’re looking for in the market. Lol
Ouch! that totally sucks! I am so sorry you are going through this! Glad you still have the AC+ This made me wonder… Those clear covers they are selling all over the place.
LOL
I kinda wanna watch it on the camera but I will get ptsd lol
Post it and we can all be traumatized together! 😄
I’ll have to put it on YouTube or sm lol
I have one of these on mine, don't think it'll help from a large drop, but I do feel like it'll help prevent the massive shatter from the safety glass breaking on a small impact point. Better safe than sorry I'd say.
I'm still thinking about getting one they aren't expensive edit: Just bought one =) Amazon… regular price $19.99 after the discount, coupon and the additional coupon, $4.27 with tax. For that much, I'll check it out.
I like it. I had to cut out the vent part on the bottom to match the holes, but it wasn't hard and I think it's worth the protection. Really doesn't look that bad either.

Did your dog take this photo?
No, our turtle
I have to say, he’s got quick reflexes for a turtle.
Not fast enough to save the avp
Shit happens…
That external battery, in the way it was implemented, was a mistake.
Bro I’d actually kill myself 😭😂 I’m so sorry that happened to you I can’t even imagine
That’s why you don’t make the battery a separate accessory for this exact reason, battery should have been attached to the device to balance it out like quest pro, I’m so glad I saved my money cause this AVP has been one of the biggest fails the more posts I see about it
Don’t front. The truth is you can’t afford it. 😎
Lmao that is not the problem I have everything from Apple and was planning on getting it, also my tv in my gaming setup is the same price as this headset so yes I can afford it but choose not to get it after seeing what a piece of shit product it is.
Lol. Good product design i would say. Thanks apple.
Sorry. Too fragile and thanks for testing for us. With how cheaply made this is, I’d demand they fix for free.
Doubt they will fix for free. Hopefully next gen they realize how much they’re having to fix and come up w a better solution
Seeing as they probably have thousands of unsold units, I would say they will replace your unit lol
It baffles me why people even buy these things. What do you use them for? I'm genuinely curious.
So I can tell ppl I broke it on accident lol

I'm not, I saw this post in my feed. I just wondered why people actually spend this much money on a useless gimmick.
