Hey! I got into watches an year ago. I built a 6 watch collection which I enjoyed but now I have too much watches which I don’t wear enough. So I want to start again, I’ve saved up for good expensive watches and want to have a smaller yet more luxurious collection. So my question… Where could I sell these types of watches in order to at least get some money in return (these are watches like tissot prx, Longines hydroconquest, etc…)

This_Attention_4238

What turquoise dial color watch can you recommend me under 200 USD?

Yikess7

Are there eco drives that look similar to eco drive AO9000-06B with black hands and white dial? Maybe a little smaller too??

Yikess7

Or any quartz watch (newer model preferred)

cwm9

My son keeps popping off the 22mm pins from his watch. (He has Aspergers, and I use the watch to communicate with him and automatically send medication reminders to him.) I know they come in different diameters and 316 steel, but even so, they seem to be pretty flimsy. Does anyone make higher quality pins than what I can get on Amazon? Perhaps case-hardened pins with strong springs?

Zenmf13

I'm looking for a watch with quartz movement because I don't want the high cost maintenance of mechanical watches, just the smooth motion of the second hand(higher than 3600 beats) is enough for me. I also like the chronograph design, and I want a brand that is focused on watches. I've been dating this Seiko, SSB387, what do you guys think? The case is made of titanium, which looks very beautiful in screen, but I'm worried they might not be as resistant as the inox counterparts, and it is hardlex crystal, is that as good as sapphire? Wath do you guys think about this watch? Any other recommendations?

boobumblebee

if you have larger wrist, the bulova lunar pilot is a great watch ( aside from its big size ) sapphire glass, chronograph, high beat quartz, certainly durable ( it was on the moon! ) has history, and can be found new between $3-400 all day long. a slightly smaller version is coming out soon, but I'd imagine it would be awhile before you see pricing discounts on it, and as far as I know, there hasn't been an MSRP released yet. if you do get the seiko and get the crystal scratched up, there is a HUGE after market community for modifications and you can easily get a watchmaker to swap the crystal with a sapphire one.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

Hardlex is not as good as sapphire. It's essentially treated glass so it will scratch over time

arngt

Hi, Any recommendations for finding a strap that can fit this Oris which has an attached lug tube(don't know the correct name)? Here's a picture of the original strap [https://imgur.com/a/IiXfF1n](https://imgur.com/a/IiXfF1n).

psysc0rpi0n

Hi. Up to 600€, which watches would you guys recommend? I want a watch with metal brace, with the usual 3 dials for day/night time, chronometer, etc. I liked Tissot Seastar 1000 Chronograph. I know this is a Quartz movement but that's what my money can buy. What other suggestions similar to this one I have up to the same price?

jamp0g

i just checked some guides and i am overwhelmed with both selections and price. we just want to buy a watch that can last a long time for less than 150$. it would be a gift for our kid’s 15th bday. he wants it semi formal or formal type. i would want if it’s a classic that he can pass on if it last or dont get lost. he likes to dress up a lot so it is easy to wear that is a plus. any tips or suggestions outside the price range will be more than welcome as well. we can use it to google similar watches appropriate for his age and today’s time. tia!

cchiz

Citizen Eco drive. Plenty of styles to choose from. They are solar charging.

jamp0g

ty for helping us narrow it down!

TimeUpAddCoinToPlay

Citizen make great watches that might have something that fits the style and price you want. For $150 you're not likely to get anything that will last generations, but that seems like more a requirement that should be selected for in another decade than now.

jamp0g

we are hmm frugal. it’s more the mentality of last around let’s say 5 years then we will have no problem if needed to look for a repairman afterwards. but i don’t really know anything about this market. my mind is still stuck on those nice pocket watches i seen a while back. anyways it seems that is the brand to check. ty for the tip!

TimeUpAddCoinToPlay

Sure, everyone's got their price point. 5 years will be no problem for quartz watches outside of rare exceptions. Usually repair of a watch will cost more than a new one at that price point. Might also be worth looking at used mechanical watches somewhere like chrono24.

jamp0g

ty will google those!

TimeUpAddCoinToPlay

Someone explain to me how people feel safe transferring thousands of dollars through methods that have no buyer protection? I can't do it. References can be faked, and there's always the option for people with good references to just disappear with a bunch of peoples' money^1, so "buy the buyer" alone doesn't make sense to me. How do you do it? ^1 I've had that happen once on a small thing where I took the chance.

pulse2287

I guess the answer is you can never be 100% sure you won’t be ripped off without escrow or something like that. There are pro dealers on r/WatchExchange and watchuseek with tons of transactions and vouches that are unlikely to rip you off, but if it seems too good to be true it probably is. Sometimes it’s worth paying a little more for peace of mind imo.

nebulousdav

Hi all -- could you recommend a well-made, attractive watch box where I can safety store and display my small watch collection (currently two nice watches, might eventually get a third). There are lots of options on Amazon but most are suspiciously cheap-looking.

Outlaw2k21

Hi, I'm a watch novice, and while I own several watches, I've never bought a mechanical watch. So my question is, is it worth it? Or are they a pain having to wind up every day etc. I'm thinking about purchasing a Hamilton Khaki watch (inspired in part by Joel's watch in Last of Us) but as it is £430 I want to make sure it's the right decision. Thanks

boobumblebee

the khaki line is great, and a really good watch for the money. The winding doesn't get annoying, it last about 80 hours, and so really you only have to wind it ( which takes like 15 seconds ) every 3 days or so.

Outlaw2k21

Thanks, that's the only thing I was worried about to be honest, it being a chore to wind up all the time but sounds like an easy job. I'm looking at Khaki now from Hamilton and a Seiko series 5, not sure what to go for

boobumblebee

Both are good, the Hamilton is good but the seikos come in more styles, the retro military field watch style isn’t for everyone. You’ll be happy going with either.

Jessica_T

In my experience with an automatic watch, if you move your arm around enough during the day it stays topped off anyway. If you're going hand-wound, depends on the movement in question. Personally, I don't mind winding a watch though.

StickShift5

Current Hamiltons have 80 hour power reserves, so you don't have to wind it every day if you don't want to.

Abydin98

Is this site legit ? https://topperjewelers.com/

vanillamode

yes; they're an authorized dealer for all the brands they carry. i've never bought from them online, but i've shopped at their physical location. they're friendly, knowledgeable, and pretty passionate about watches, so sometimes it almost feels like going to a watch collector meetup when you go there

onevstheworld

Just google them. You'll find a physical store front, reviews and several brand websites listing them as authorised dealers.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

I always just look companies up on Trustpilot. That's always a good way to tell.

TimeUpAddCoinToPlay

They have an address, check for any other references to their name or location on google maps or a search engine.

ObfuscatedAnswers

I'm looking to get my first watch that is a bit pricier. After looking around I've found a Tissot that I feel is my style. [TISSOT COUTURIER AUTOMATIC CHRONOGRAPH](https://www.tissotwatches.com/media/catalog/product/cache/aaadd316e453df5b08f7f4246fad1a9c/T/0/T035.627.16.051.00_R_1.png) T035.627.16.051.00 Is this a good watch? As I'm quite new to this I want to check if anyone here might have other suggestions in the same style and price range that I might have missed. My only real requirements are to be automatic and have either a light or glowing hands so that I can check it at night. The rest is down to my personal style preferens.

MSBAIH

Hey. Saw this watch ( Michael Kors MK8280 blue ) in a local shop and it's around 150 $, is it a good watch ? Is it worth its price ?

boobumblebee

eh.. its definitely more of a fashion watch than a what most people here would consider a real watch. for $150 you could find a much much better watch at /r/ChineseWatches or stick with some of the more reputable brands such as timex, casino, etc. that watch is also MASSIVE. if you don't have large wrist, its going to wear very uncomfortably.

MSBAIH

What good type of real watches I could get for around 300$ to 400$ , and the size in the middle?

boobumblebee

what kind of style are you looking for? something formal, something more rugged and outdoorsy? something a bit casual that can be worn in any occasion? the go-to in that price range is the hamilton khaki mechanical or the automatic if that's your style. Swiss made, sapphire crystal, really really good finishing, and not bulky at all which makes them comfortable to wear all day. I have both, but slighly prefer the automatic over the mechanical, and both can be found much less than their MSRP. seiko is always a great place to start, affordable, well made, have automatic and quartz options, and have lots of different styles. The Seiko 5 series is always popular

MSBAIH

Thanks a lot , guess I'll look into Seiko watches then. Tbh this will be the first watch I'll buy, I'm trying to start a collection

boobumblebee

good luck, hopefully you find something you like and enjoy.

MSBAIH

Thank you I appreciate it

tundra_tea_party

im loking for a budget quartz chronograph with date AND day indicators? (around 300 usd). all the chronographs i'm liking don't seem to have a day indicator. is this the norm? coz i haven't bought a chronograph yet.

mlsteinrochester

It's unusual, especially for quartz. Lots with dates, very few day/date ones.

Over_Tea4610

Trying to find a watch for my partner, budget of around £2k, and I know she likes steel bracelets, dark dials and wants the weekday on it. I’ve been looking at Tudor Prince day dates which are great but so similar to the Rolex I’d worry it might be stolen (she lives in a semi rough area). Also been seeing Omega cosmics and Seamasters with weekday but they are generally on leather bands. I suppose I could get the bracelet separately? Oh and I think she’d prefer second hand, for sustainability reasons

Naewanz

Stumped between 3 watches for fist watch, 6 inch wrist. Between Seiko Snkl45k1, Tissot Seastar 1000 Quartz and Tissot Prx 35

discrepancies

Looking for something minimal and automatic. Classy but not dressy. I like Nomos and Panarai as examples. My budget is up to $3k.

TokyoUmbrella

what-do-heck

I saw a beautiful watch posted here maybe 6 months ago but l've not been able to find it again. Could you guys help me find/identify it. The thing that stood out about it was a blue squiggly seconds hand. Unfortunately that’s all I can remember. It might have been a breitling watch. I remember looking it up and seeing it was around 18,000 when they pop up at auction. Other than that I don't really know any more. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Zanpa

something by Alain Silberstein?

what-do-heck

Those are cool but I think it looked more like the timex fly back chronograph with the squiggly blue hand

ReverseAids

recommendations for a classic dress watch (patrimony/calatrava like) no more than 38mm, simple dial, no seconds or with small seconds, manual winding at 3000 usd?

TokyoUmbrella

NOMOS Orion or Montblanc 1858 manual?

75footubi

That's actually tough. There's the Hamilton Intramatic but it has a date (no seconds hand though). The Sinn 1739 is 39mm but otherwise very simple

johnjust

Looking for a 22mm curved end rubber strap with a deployant clasp, similar the the one on this watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSbVxm5LtLk&t=44s Everything I've found so far hasn't been all three of those things (or are made specifically for a Rolex, costing upwards of $200ish), just curious if anyone knows of where I might find one for a reasonable price? [I also found these](https://www.ebay.com/itm/274378002930) with "links", but I'd like it to not have those.

Christian159260

How do I change the battery on a watch like this [Back of the watch](https://i.imgur.com/yM85pDK.jpg) The lcd isnt visible directly from the front but only from certain angles. How can I find out whether the is issue is the battery or polarizer (or could it be something else)? I think the watch is from 1994. [Direct view](https://i.imgur.com/3lLFMPJ.jpg) [Side view](https://i.imgur.com/F4YnqdY.jpg) It seems to keep time well on the digital but I haven't tested the analogue

boobumblebee

thats a screw on case back, you'll either need a tool, or if you happen to have a rubber toy ball, or even a wad of ductape, you can unscrew it with that, several youtube videos will show you.

Christian159260

Thank you! Will it affect waterproofing if I unscrew and rescrew?

boobumblebee

generally, no. there may or may not be an o-ring, if so, just inspect that it isn't torn and is in the proper place when you reassemble it.

GoodWilling1648

I recently bought a Hamilton Khaki Field Auto Silver Dial and put it on a navy NATO strap. It came on a light brown leather strap originally. I can’t decide if I should keep the leather strap on or go with the NATO. What do y’all think? NATO - https://imgur.com/a/wmVb1KR Leather - https://imgur.com/a/tQH86UT

boobumblebee

i think leather looks good on it, but I'm not that big of a fan of the stock leather bracelet, its pretty thick and stiff, I feel like its too thick for how thin the watches are, but leather always looks nice.

Acrobatic_Item3685

Leather looks much fancier

Main_Elderberry6092

Hey all - found a local guy selling a Baumé et Mercier Classima 10332 with the white dial and black leather band. Comes with box and purchase auth. He said it was a gift that has been worn maybe less than 5 times, and he had the engraving on the back buffed out. Currently listed at $725 ($1950 MSRP). Is that a good price? Should I offer lower due to the engraving being buffed? New to the resale market so any recommendations/best practices are appreciated!

75footubi

Seems like a reasonable price (less than 50% of MSRP). If you like it, buy it. But don't expect to make a profit if you want to sell it.

Main_Elderberry6092

That was basically my train of thought, and not looking for resale value on my end, just wanted to make sure I wasn’t overlooking anything that should affect my offer. thanks for the reply!

Public_disc

Any problems with wearing an automatic watch such as Hamiltom Khaki as daily beater? I'm talking 24/7, showers, yard work, exercise, beach trips, carpentry ect. Would I be better off sticking with quartz?

boobumblebee

Thats the beauty of the hamiltons, they can be beater watches, but also work well in nicer settings. automatic vs quartz is more of a personal thing, no doubt the quartz will be more durable, but I have automatic watches that I treat as absolute beaters with no issues.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

No real issues for that kind of work. The watch is water resistant enough for showers and the beach. Just make sure you rinse off any seawater. I don't know how aggressive you'd be with exercise and carpentry. If you're boxing I'd probably leave it off, same if you are hammering and wearing the watch on your dominant wrist. Mechanical watches can take a degree of shock, but strong continuous impacts can affect its timekeeping, in the same way if you were to drop the watch. For the really punishing stuff, I'd say wear a quartz. Less risk of damaging the watch since a service on a mechanical watch isn't cheap.

GaddockTeegFunPolice

If you wear them for showering and such I would look that the watch has a water resistance above 100m to be safe

Accomplished-Ad-5655

100m for a shower is overkill. But yes, for a watch it's nice to have 100m for the reassurance for long term. But people have done more with a Casio F91 that's "only" water resistant.

boobumblebee

you're crazy if you shower with anything less than a rolex deepsea. you absoultly need at least 1500m of water resistance.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

I like to live my life on the edge

ScholarWooden5620

Yeah hi, trying to build a pretty reasonable watch collection as a (year 11) high schooler, currently own a few casio and seiko digital watches, a vostok amphibia, and am recieving a vintage automatic seiko sometime soon. I (very) recently got scammed out of a nice red seiko (got a full refund) and am looking for a "rebound" watch. Anything red is interesting for me, i like manual or automatic mechanisms. Is it too much to ask for under $200 aud? And i'd love any recommendations if possible. Pre-owned is fine.z

GaddockTeegFunPolice

Orient has a great range of red dial watches for that price

ScholarWooden5620

Thanks!

Recommendations for a sub-500 dollar watch with a in integrated rubber strap? Something like the seamaster with a rubber strap or the aquanaut

GaddockTeegFunPolice

The citizen promaster diver BN0205-10L could be good fit I have a similar model on bracelet and it’s been confused with a seamaster two times

jayhooly

looking for a good, tough watch for winter camping. prefer a field watch but pilot or divers would be ok too if necessary. long lume is a key requirement here, doesn't need to be the brightest. i am aware that tritium is probably the ideal solution but i have a small UV flashlight so i think i can get away with standard lume as long as it's visible for a few hours after recharging. preferably £300 or less. any suggestions?

js999111

Field watch: SWC ARK, Marathon General Purpose (tritium), Citizen BM6400, Timex Indiglo, one of the new (2022?) Seiko field watches (I think the lume doesn't last as long compared to the others though). Diver: Seiko Monster, Citizen Promaster Aqualand NY0040-50W (or a different Promaster), Wise Adamascus AD8, Farr + Swit Wayfinder, Seiko Turtle Flieger: Escapement Time Flieger (the hands last a long time)

UserM16

Any Swiss movement divers with aluminum bezel, 38-40mm, 12mm or thinner, under $1000? If micro brands, something in-stock?

vanillamode

the 39mm aluminum hydroconquest?

UserM16

Thx! That looks very promising.

vanillamode

full disclaimer though, i used to own one, loved it in pictures and videos, got cocky and bought it without seeing in person, ended up hating it for mostly subjective reasons, but objectively speaking i didn't really have any issue with it aside from the fact that i didn't like how it looked in person, which, again, is entirely subjective, so not trying to scare you off it or anything, jus sharing my experience with it

UserM16

What didn’t you like about it?

vanillamode

it didn't really know what it wanted to be, like longines as a brand has a design language and identity of "elegance" and it tries to do that with the hydroconquest, but it also tries to be overly sporty for some reason, and a lot of design elements just clash without any real cohesion. it's almost as if longines asked tag heuer to design a dive watch for them

UserM16

I see. Ok gotcha. Thx.

raustin33

Does anybody else out there need long watch straps? Where are you buying yours? I’m having a hell of a time finding anything interesting and long. I don’t even care how much it costs. Just very few options.

GolemancerVekk

watch-band-center.com They ship from Germany. Search for "XL" or "long" and the lug width, eg. "22mm long".

556595252e

What watch should I buy? I mostly wear white sneakers, shorts and a tee shirt. And I am 22, male, Australian. In winter I wear jeans and a hoodie/jacket with the same outfit.

GolemancerVekk

It doesn't matter what style of watch you get because (a) nowadays all watch fashion is out the window and anybody can wear anything with any outfit and (b) people don't notice watches. If anybody ever comments on your watch once in a blue moon they're just trying to make conversation. The important thing is for you to like the watch, to feel good when you put it on, and to be eager each day to go out with it on your wrist. Some tips for choosing a watch: * The following brands are a safe bet: Casio, Timex, Seiko, Citizen, Orient. You literally can't go wrong with any watch from these brands, even if it's $10, it will keep time well and work fine. * I recommend getting a quartz watch rather than automatic. Quartz is electronic, it's more exact than automatics and needs very little maintenance (just change the battery once every 5 years or so). * You can also look at solar powered watches like Citizen Eco-Drive or Casio Solar, they don't need battery change, but they stop working if you leave them in a drawer too long and it can take a while to charge it back up. They're alright if you plan to wear it often. * Get a watch that you absolutely love, not one that you just like. There are thousands of models, there's no need to compromise. * Find a local online shop in your country. Don't buy used and try to avoid Amazon too. * Pay attention to your wrist size. A watch that's too late or too small may be uncomfortable to wear or look weird. If you tell us your wrist size (measure around it) we can suggest a watch size.

Admit-to-IM

Probably a good GADA (go anywhere, do anything). Not too flashy. A field or pilot watch would be a good option. Without knowing your price range A few options: Hamilton [Khaki Field](https://www.hamiltonwatch.com/en-us/h70455533-khaki-field-auto.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiAw8OeBhCeARIsAGxWtUwc3xKdiAvUR7TLwTqMYc0rnwSgde8kMzAwfW4PGS1su9gRrrqmlccaAnMSEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds) (they can be found for under $400). Very classic. [Boldr Venture](https://www.boldrsupply.co/collections/venture-automatic)\- a bit more modern. Made out of titanium. A solid watch, well priced and spec'd. [Any Islander. Lots of styles. Well made. good price.](https://longislandwatch.com/islander-watches/) Any [Vaer](https://www.vaerwatches.com/collections/all-vaer-watches?gadid=589955467848&gclid=Cj0KCQiAw8OeBhCeARIsAGxWtUwJD_2zWCsGamPMdIisNf4NZvZvfOi2pjJKKRPc_Hh955yClOdFWlAaAtAFEALw_wcB&utm_campaign=16709646686&utm_content=143500836628&utm_medium=paid&utm_source=google&utm_term=vaer%20watches). -FiveSeveN-

Oh yeah that definitely doesn't sound right lmao. From a quick search it looks like you need to set a baseline altitude - assuming I got the right instructions try the following: In altimeter mode, hold E until "Alti"appears. Use A(+) and C(-) to set the reference altitude, or hold A and C simultaneously to clear the set reference value.

GPS apps on the phone can tell you the altitude too.

Looking for a sub $5000 business formal dress watch with a minimalist dial, but a retrograde date complication. No brand/country of origin preference, but it must be mechanical. The only watch I’ve seen at this price point with a retrograde complication is the Longines Master Collection, but it’s 44mm! Dress watches should be <=38 IMO, and there’s just too much going on with the dial. Thank you!

StickShift5

Seiko makes a movement with a retrograde date (plus day and power reserve) that came in a bunch of watches. It's called the 6R24. [Here's one model featuring that movement.](https://www.seiyajapan.com/collections/seiko/products/seiko-automatic-presage-sard011-urushi-limited-edition)

SenileSexLine

Titan is an Indian brand which borrows heavily from Rado when it comes to design. These go for $80-100 brand new although you can definitely find them cheaper if you look enough. The second hand ones are listed around $30 on ebay.

azzura-dei

Hello everyone. I'm kinda new to watches. So I've been searching watches with heart rate alarm monitor that beeping when our heart rate are in the maximum zone we set. It's like Edward Norton Bruce Banner Hulk's Polar F5 Movie Prop kinda. Can you guys gives me some choices and recommendations? I don't have any preference other than that feature. Thank you so much

mlsteinrochester

This is a sub for more traditional watches. You'd be better off with one devoted to smartwatches.

isthmusofkra

Dumb question: I'm looking to replace the spring bars on my Seiko 5 that's 18 mm lug-to-lug. Do I also need 18 mm spring bars, or slightly longer?

GolemancerVekk

Lug-to-lug is typically used to mean the distance between the spring bars, across the dial. It's a large number in the 30-50mm range. It's useful to tell if a watch will work well with your wrist size. What you probably mean is the lug size, the length of one spring bar, which are smaller numbers in the 16-24mm range. If your watch specs say the size is 18mm then that's what you should get. Since there's springs involved they're technically longer but you don't need to worry about that, just get the exact size.

isthmusofkra

My apologies, it's lug size! Thank you!

cchiz

Spring bars are described by the lugs they are sized to fit, so buy 18mm spring bars.

Does anyone have any watchmaker recommendations in the Charlotte, NC area? If not a full fledged watchmaker, then anyone you would trust to do a bezel or crystal swap? I know I can buy a simple watch press and try it myself, but it's just advanced enough that I would rather give it to a professional.

Jonnathanames

Does anyone know where I can get extra links for this SEIKO 5 7009-876A? It's slightly too small... [https://www.ebay.com/itm/295409012290](https://www.ebay.com/itm/295409012290)

Zanpa

The easiest way I can think of would be to buy another full watch. Or just give up on the bracelet and get a different strap.

Western-Damage6952

Does anyone have opinions on the JLC Reverso classic sizes? I’m curious how it might look. I have fairly small wrists. 7.5 inches. Wife is looking for our anniversary and I’m nowhere near an AD.

lactoseunintolerant

I just got an automatic watch, and I think I might have damaged the crown when setting the watch. I feel resistance in certain positions when turning the crown. Is this normal?

Accomplished-Ad-5655

Not normal. You may have bent the crown stem. It's easy to do, I've done it before on a watch that doesn't have a screw-down crown. I presume yours is the same. It can be replaced easily enough. If the crown stem is bent it may compromise the seal of the gasket in the crown tube so might want to get it pressure tested if you know you'll be in the water with the watch. Most jewellers/watchmakers can air pressure test a watch to 100m.

lactoseunintolerant

Could it be that it’s because It’s already winded the watch and the resistance means it’s fully wind?

StickShift5

To a degree, yes. I've found that with ETA 2824s (and it's clones) when winding the watch from dead it has little resistance, but by the time you've found it enough that the watch is running there is some resistance. The crown can still be wound, but there is resistance from the mainspring. Considering that the watches were intended to be wound just enough to get going and then be wound from wearing it, it makes sense. The winding gears in those movements are also fairly fragile, so I wouldn't heavily wind one of them.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

Not for an automatic watch. The rotor is always turning and winding the mainspring. To prevent the mainspring from being over wound and snapping there's a clutch of sorts that lets the mainspring slip incrementally. The only difference you might notice is a very faint clicking noise when fully wound. You might have to hold the watch to your ear to hear it. You wouldn't feel anything different.

lactoseunintolerant

Got it, thank you

GaddockTeegFunPolice

Thats the hand winding mechanism automatic watches have them too

BlackBeast3612

How do you know when to replace a quartz battery in a watch aside from it completely stopping? I'm interested in some watches with quartz movements, such as chronographs, and gmt movements, but having my watch die when I need it and am using it annoys me. I know some ronda quartz movements have this function but do any of the miyota chronograph or ronda gmt movements have any signs indicating that the battery is about to shut off? I've been looking at some watches by lüm-tec and sangin instruments that I'm interested in.

GolemancerVekk

Some chronographs have a battery check function. I have a Casio where you hold down a button and one of the subdial hands will point at an area with High-Medium-Low markers. Have you considered a solar watch? They never need the battery replaced but you need to expose them to light regularly instead.

the4thderivative

Some watch movements have the second hand pause for a second then tick twice quickly when the battery gets within a close range of going dead. They keep time correctly, but the double tick is very noticable so you definitely wouldn't miss it and be aware that the battery should be changed

BlackBeast3612

Isn't that an end of life indicator found in only some ronda quartz movements? Or does that apply to quartz movements in general? Thanks for the reply btw.

SenileSexLine

I've seen it on citizen and casio as well so some miyota movements use it too.

onevstheworld

You'll find the same behaviour on Grand Seiko and Longines VHP quartz.

the4thderivative

I don't think it's exclusive to Ronda movements, but I don't know enough about specific quartz movements manufacturers to say which do and do not have it. From personal experience, I have an Epson solar movement that does feature it as well as an Armitron watch with an unmarked movement that does too

The_John_P

This Seiko is close to what you're looking for. Doesn't have a gold case, but gold numerals. And no sapphire, but their hardlex mineral crystal. Look for model # SRPE45 or SARY167 [https://seikousa.com/products/srpe45](https://seikousa.com/products/srpe45)

WatchandThings

Orient does have bambino model in 38mm with gold case, but it's not green dial. There isn't any bambino 38mm in green dial as far as I'm aware. I also wanted to add detail to the 'mechanical lasts longer' fact. Mechanical can technically last longer than quartz due to the ability to repair the movement, but that servicing/repair cost begins around $200-300+. For watch in Bambino price range you'll likely just buy a new watch rather than go through that costly servicing/repair process. On the other hand a well made(<- key detail) quartz movement will only require battery change without special servicing. It would end up being much more affordable to maintain and you may end up using the watch for longer than the mechanical option.

mishkasm173

Orient makes a 36mm Bambino. The Timex Marlin also comes in a green with a gold plated case. I think there is a green Seiko Cocktail Time too.

I would look up Swatch watches. They are meant to be less expensive and have really interesting and fun design.

Thanks!

Please help me choose my first watch. [Orient Kamasu Blue](https://imgur.com/a/braZtph) Reference : `RA-AA0002L19B` OR [Orient Ray Raven](https://imgur.com/a/fUoyTI4) Referenct: `FAA02003B9` I am looking to get one of these as my daily driver. Thank You

eudaimonean

In terms of styling, the Raven is more a historically styled diver and subdued and the Kamasu is sportier and shinier. The Kamasu also has higher specs on paper with the sapphire crystal, which suits the overall shinier/glossier design, though IMO softer mineral crystals can sometimes be very aesthetically fitting for historically styled watches even if shinier sapphire is more performant. Which one is more suited to your style is up to you. Kamasu probably holds value a little better if you go to flip out of it in the future should that be a consideration for you.

thepenginator

Question: Are there any watches with a rotating bezel that isn't a diver watch? Currently use an SKX013 and am looking for something lighter. For context I work as a teacher and like using the rotating bezel to mark the end of my class.

GolemancerVekk

There are Casio models that are very cheap and very light (40-50g) with rotating bezel, for example the [MRW200H](https://www.casio.com/us/watches/casio/product.MRW-200H-2BV/) or [MRW-200HC](https://www.casio.com/ph/watches/casio/product.MRW-200HC-2BV/) series.

Quality mechanical movements these days are not what I would consider fragile. Especially if they are in a sport watch case. That said, at baseline mechanicals are not as accurate as quartz generally speaking (there are some exceptions).

[deleted]

improvthismoment

You can get durable mechanicals at that price from Seiko, Tissot, Baltic, Vaer… The Seiko Prospex diver line should be plenty durable for most people for example. For more accurate mechanicals look for the chronometer or master chronometer certifications. I can’t think of any at that price range. And even those are something like +/- 2-4 seconds per day, which is not as good as most decent quartz watches.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

Most quartz are pretty durable. But if you're really talking about something that will take some rough and tumble then I agree with the others regarding the Victorinox Inox. Also perhaps the [Citizen BN0118](https://www.watchshop.com/watches/citizen-watch-bn0118-04e.pdp), [Vaer C3](https://www.vaerwatches.com/products/c3-korean-field-usa-quartz-36mm)?

WatchandThings

I'm seconding the INOX recommendation. INOX and G-shock are the only watches that I can think of that's gone through torture test as part of their design process. Well... I guess you can add Omega Speedmaster into that torture tested list too because of the NASA testing.

Zanpa

victorinox INOX is a line of durable analog watches

Thecleverbear

What’s a good watch for a Muslim that helps to remind of the five daily prayers. Tia

SenileSexLine

Casio prayer alarm CPA-100 is the default option. Casio Prayer Compass CPW-500 has more features but it was discontinued in 2015 and might be difficult to source one at a reasonable price. The built in prayer times are fairly close to actual prayer times as it uses data from a Saudi institute and it is preprogrammed till 2099. There are present cities but you can also punch in your latitude and longitude to set your location. You can also use any gshock or casio with 5 alarms which are most digital models but you'd have to readjust every now and then. The Bluetooth models would be the most convenient way to readjust multiple alarms as you set it directly through your phone rather than using the menu system on the watch. The gshock app is not the best but it is decent enough for this purpose. If you want accurate timings with no set up, the solution would be using a smart watch or a fitness band. This requires an app on the phone or watch but it's fire and forget and you can be sure that you are getting accurate alarms.

Thecleverbear

I don’t want a smart watch since I don’t want to have to constantly charge it

Thecleverbear

Thank you very much!!!

L_J_X

Has anyone ever broken a casio g shock before ?

the4thderivative

Yes, about 20 years ago I broke the lugs on one. I was playing basketball in a gym and tripped, hitting a wall. The lug broke when my arm hit the wall bracing my fall and the strap came out

WatchandThings

I haven't personally broken it, but I have seen a broken g-shock at one of those mostly junk and garbage flea markets. The watch looked alright from the outside so I was interested, but then realized one of the buttons was not fully functioning and it had a weird glitchy screen(when button was being pressed). I also recall a military vet on youtube that mentioned that he's destroyed multiple g-shocks. Essentially whenever he sent a g-shock in for battery change it would eat water upon return. That seems to be a watchmaker error with the gaskets, but he's gone through multiple g-shocks that way.

eudaimonean

They're tough but they're still a physical object so yes, they have been broken. From what I've seen usually the outer shell will fall apart before the actual module goes, though.

Zanpa

The strap on the cheapest models isn't super durable.

No_Swimming2101

What about the brand Elyssee from Germany? I can get a HERITAGE II - 18015 for 100. I'm on a budget (+-150) and want to start collecting. Shall I go for it as a daily at the office?

PurpleCinnamon

What are your favorite watches that come on an integrated rubber strap from the factory?

raustin33

Omega for me. Their deployant clasps also make it so so good.

PurpleCinnamon

You talking about the 300M?

raustin33

That or the planet ocean. I believe the Aquaterra as well.

WatchandThings

Oh, I hate myself for this, but I do like the Patek Aquanaut on the rubber strap. I'm not a hype watch guy and I do not like the hype that the aquanaut has, BUT it really is a good looking watch and one that pulls off the rubber strap well. I also like Doxa on a rubber strap, but I think I'm just really liking that bright color on the dial and strap. It's just purely a color thing and not design thing, and you could probably do the same bright color rubber strap on a Mark XX or something and I'd love that too.

PurpleCinnamon

Yeah it’s annoying how good looking the aquanaut is… Doxa is an interesting one. Definitely very unique.

Admit-to-IM

Not necessarily a favorite, but Islander just released a new titanium diver with an integrated rubber strap. As far as personal favorites, the Doxa sub 300 and Sinn U50 come to mind.

PurpleCinnamon

Sinn is a good point… Looks like they do the 103 and 104 on rubber too.

Apart from the hamilton of course Maybe there's a specific name for the way the day is displayed?

mattlange214

Looking to get into watches. What are some good budget brands?

Admit-to-IM

[Islander](https://longislandwatch.com/islander-watches/). Well made. Lots of different options. Good customer service.

L_J_X

Really depends on what is your definition of budget

mattlange214

Around 300 or less

L_J_X

1. Seiko (Specifically Seiko 5) 2. Orient (Orient Mak 2 and Orient Bambino) 3. Casio (Duro, Gshock and F91W) 4. Timex (Weekender) The brackets are just suggestions.

GolemancerVekk

Casio, Timex, Citizen, Seiko, and Seiko's sub-brands (Lorus, Pulsar and Orient).

L_J_X

TIL Orient is a Seiko sub brand

WatchandThings

From what I understand the watch brand Seiko is a brother company to Epson who is the parent company of Orient. The parent company of both Seiko watch brand and Epson(full name seiko-epson corp) is also called Seiko, but that parent company isn't the watch brand company that we are thinking of. So there is the Seiko Sr. that has the kids Seiko Jr.(watch brand) and Epson(Seiko-Epson). Epson has a kid named Orient. Seiko Sr. is Orient's grandfather, and Seiko Jr. is Orient's uncle. Seiko Jr. and Orient is in the same line of profession.

GolemancerVekk

[Check this out](https://www.oldswisswatches.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/FB_IMG_1532166781045.jpg), it's interesting.

L_J_X

Wow some of those are insane. Very interesting indeed.

L_J_X

TIL Orient is a Seiko sub brand

Competition_Lower

Mechanical wise, Seiko and Orient, depends on the watch type you're looking for

mattlange214

Not sure on type lol just whatever looks good I guess haha don’t really know anything about watches

Competition_Lower

Well, there're different watches for different use cases. *Dive Watches*: it's a built-to-last type of watch, used originally by scuba divers to keep track of how much they've spent underwater. It's a a durable watch and used nowadays as the beater type, I use mine as my work watch (also bc I only own one). *Dress watch*: as the name suggests, it's meant to be weared if you're dressed up, wearing a suit and tie for instance. There's no tool type here, just a watch to be used a jewel imo. Still they look damn fine (looking at you Grand Seiko SLGA007 and Seiko Presage serie!) *Complications*: I'm making this a category of it's own as there're way too many for different uses. Rn my fav complication is the perpetual calendar in the style of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak RD 2 Perpetual Calendar Ultra-thin. There's also the chronograph, which lets you use your watch like a stop watch. Complications go from basic like a day date, up to very complex like a gyro tourbillon.

SmolockHolmes

General Question: What is the best place/places to buy watches? I’m having a tough time trying to figure out what is bootleg vs what is not. Where do people go to find a good deal?

vanillamode

depends on what it is you're buying, like, for example, your approach to buying a widely available $200 watch is going to be very different from a highly desired $10,000 watch authorized dealers are going to be the safest place to buy watches, since they're backed by the manufacturers themselves and guaranteed to be authentic with warranty. authorized dealers typically won't advertise discounts, but they'll give discounts if you ask, and the amount will vary a lot with many factors, such as the specific model, the particular dealer, your negotiating tactics, the salesperson's mood, etc any retailer that sells brand new watches but is not an "authorized dealer" is going to be considered grey market. grey market can range from large retailers with their own websites (eg, jomashop, creationwatches, etc) to third party sellers on amazon to independent sellers on ebay or chrono24. grey market dealers will typically show you the discounted price up front, but they cannot offer you the manufacturer warranty, and the manufacturer will not take care of you if the watch ends up being a lemon or a fake

SmolockHolmes

I’m a young professional so I’m gonna be starting out small (under/around $100) and grow into that 250-500 range I’ve been looking at some local pawn shops for cheap models and some awesome comments talked about Chrono24 which turned out to be a great website for looking at stuff

js999111

r/WatchExchange is pretty good

GolemancerVekk

Local online shops will probably be the cheapest. By local I mean inside your own country. You can also watch for sales. The prices on the brand's own website are usually greatly inflated. You can find deals on Amazon but they're not great and it should be sold directly by Amazon not a third party, otherwise all bets are off. For used watches you can use eBay or Chrono24 but you have to be very careful with the seller's reputation, and you still take your chances, but at least you have something to do on. This method is best used for vintage models that are not made anymore, or specialty models like Japan-only watches. Don't buy from places like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. Personally I also buy from CreationWatches in Singapore because I've been buying from them for 10 years and it's a good mix of all of the above (decent model selection and prices, some harder to find Japanese models, original pieces, they ship with DHL, they follow your country's tax and duties etc. all legit).

Competition_Lower

Online i'd say Chrono24 is good place for non luxury brands. If you're getting higher in class get it from and ad

OVERALL question: I need a watch that’s colorful/funky and does it all, what do y’all recommend? So for context: I’m currently using a black G-Shock 2900 I got used off of ebay or whatever because I worked summer camp and needed something that was - primarily digital (no analog, no smart watch) - waterproof - have a backlight feature - stopwatch (not the most important) - timer - hourly beeper - can stand up to getting knocked around - easy to put on and take off with one hand - has date and day of the week (i am what the kids call ~forgetful~) - soft band (plastic or fabric, no metal) My G-Shock works fine, but I’m looking for a replacement for the following reasons - too bulky (I started rock climbing and I can’t get as flat against the wall as I’d like, also because it’d get caught on my shirt and the excess band, which is under the little loopy thing, still gets caught under stuff) - not as aesthetically pleasing (not super important) What I’m looking for in a new/replacement watch - lower profile - all of the features I liked about the gshock (is the stopwatch a huge deal?) - funky colors (if i’m gonna buy a new one, its gonna be pretty) - outdoor friendly (climbing, swimming, hiking…) Watches I’ve looked at and why I didn’t get them (yet) - Evora company (love their colorways and how customizable everything is and the shape is low profile) -> new company -> not sure of quality -> no timer(?) -> maybe kitschy? -> favored colorway: Maui, and also their orange strap w the pink detailing - Freestyle (love their color schemes as well and the shape is more low profile) -> doesn’t have a flexible timer (only 1 minute, 3 minutes, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 45, 60. Is that a huge issue?) -> Sea Glass colorway Ideally I’d spend up to $50 on it, but also I’d be ok with spending AT MOST 100

WatchandThings

I was kind of thinking Casio A168 the whole time I was reading that. Technically a downgrade from g-shock, but I think it addresses everything you wanted and personally I think it looks better for general wear than the g-shock as well. Only thing I'm concerned about is water resistance, as I'm not sure what it is rated to off of my head. (P.S. Just read no metal bracelet requirement. This one's metal.) But just in case that one doesn't have enough water resistance my back up recommendation is Casio AE1200. That should address all the issues you had with the g-shock as well, and that one has 100m water resistance rating if my memory serves me correctly. Edit: Also check out Timex Ironman line in general.

75footubi

Swatch

GolemancerVekk

If you've looked through all of Casio's watches and didn't find anything you want, have a look at Timex too. But I'd check Casio again, they have smaller models in their Sport, Vintage and Youth Digital collections. You can replace the strap if needed.
