>Don't buy new cars. My dad's Silverado has so much wrong with it (it's a '22). Meanwhile I have a 2011 Silverado and it still works great
My '22 Accord is so much better than my '11 Accord it's hard to even compare them.
Perhaps just be more particular about which cars you buy, might be better advice.
Lifelong Honda guy but wasn't impressed with the '23 CRV. Went with the '23 Outback. Zero regrets thus far so maybe Subaru should be on your radar especially if you offroad or drive in mountains or snow.
I'm hoping it holds up as well as my tank of a '05 Accord.
Does it have all the annoyances of a lot of modern cars? Like the big unresponsive screen and having to go through multiple screens to find the ac controls?
My wife and I bought a brand new 22 Mazda CX-30 and absolutely love everything about it. All the bells and whistles we could realistically need and physical knobs and buttons to control the climate control.
my 2015 has intermittent AC and its fucking infuriating. it just randomly dies out, or its not working and randomly comes back full blast, or its sputtering like its got low voltage.
because it was so intermittent I couldnt replicate while at the dealership, and they wouldnt do anything about it.
I think the annoyances are very make specific. I have a new Volvo. I love everything about it…….. except a feature of many new makes. It has what is essentially a subscription service for certain features. They get away with it by running these features (i.e. remote start, remote lock/unlock, etc) through an app and giving you this app for free for a few years. But eventually this app will come with an expensive annual charge (I think $200 or $300?). I can go without ofc. But it’s an annoying feature of modern day subscriptions for everything.
Right? I went from a '09 Pontiac Vibe to a '22 Corolla and holy shit, new cars are SO COOL. The adaptive cruise control?! That blew my mind the first time I realized what the car was doing.
Hahaha yes. I went from a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am to a 2019 Subaru Forester.
Android auto, adaptive cruise control, heated seats, AC that works, no inexplicable rattling, and I probably won't implode if I crash.
I mean I generally prefer to switch it off as it's a little too sensitive for my liking, but the fact that the car can do it at all was wild to me. The car I had before the '09 didn't even have power windows or locks, so the changes are all huge to me.
I hate it for when a car semi cuts me off and it brakes hard to restore the gap. Otherwise it's great for when the other person isn't using cruise and their speed is wondering.
Yeah the person you replied to was referencing a truck which are definitely more expensive to maintain these days whereas classics like the accord or the civic have only gotten better. They are still a really safe bet on reliability
Don't buy American is the real thing to say. American brands are just awful these days. Best to stick with all things asian except for Nissan, the Chrysler of Japan.
You know, it's possible that there are good new cars and bad new cars, just like there are good old cars and bad old cars. I have a new-ish BMW and everything works great on it.
My husband's Silverado is a 06 and is still chugging along, despite being squished a bit by a tree in May! The tree fully squished my 00 Durango, though, unfortunately.

It was apprehended and turned into firewood. We called our local chainsaw.
I'd seen what they could do many times, but didn't truly appreciate just how much damage they could do until they creamed our cars.

That there's the Silverado, she got hit by a branch about as wide as my thigh. That bit up top is where it smashed the windshield and crushed the roof. We replaced the windshield but it wouldn't sit flush, so my husband's buddies went to work on it. Thankfully, the truck wasn't a total loss like the Durango.
My 09 Subaru outback starts up every time ready to go without issues. The biggest problems I have had with it is when I ran over some nails and had to get my tires replaced.
Had 2012 Outback that was a tank and resold for almost what I paid for it
Have a 2017 that is just as amazing
I will drive Outbacks for the rest of my life if they keep this up.
Eh. Don't buy American in general. Very little wrong with the new models of the better Japanese cars. Honda, Toyota and Subaru all have excellentquality and track records (we don't talk about Nissan).
A '22 Taco is gonna be a way better buy than a '22 Chevy.
Toyota makes you pay to use the remote start system that is already installed. Same move BMW pulled with heated seats. Toyota is late to the EV game, but I wouldn't be surprised to see something like this on their cars. Just because they have a good reliability reputation doesn't mean everything they do is good.
100%. My model Y prompts you when parked and you can snooze it..it also tells you approximately how long it will take to update and double checks that it's okay before starting. OP is full of bologna.
I read a story years ago about a guy who died when his corvette caught fire because the electronic locks failed, and he couldn't get to the manual release that was in some stupid, obscure spot.
If it's not illegal, it definitely should be.
That may have also happened but the story I’m familiar with the guy died of heat exhaustion.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2015/06/11/texas-man-dog-die-trapped-corvette/71053474/
Tesla does have emergency manual door unlocks, but they really should make it more known as to where they are and they should put them in more accessible places for safety and efficiency. Kinda scary that some people don't even know they have them.
They’re actually located on the door right below the automatic button. Most people that get in one for the first time actually confuse the manual release as the push button in a Tesla.
I was in a kia ceed while my wife nipped into to the shop about a year ago, she took the keys which with the proximity technology locked me inside, this didn't mean much at the time because every car I've owned in the past you can open it from the inside.
It was a hot day, and as much as I tried I couldn't get the doors open, windows down or click the button to unlock it, I have a pretty mechanical mindset and was searching in vain for any way to open this car, literally nothing works without the keys in proximity, the buttons all go dead and handles don't work, tried double clicking buttons, long pressing everything, nothing on Google that would help.
Honestly I was moments away from smashing the window with the seatbelt. Had it in my hand ready. She came back and I was wet with sweat.
Don't think I've ever been happier to see her haha.
Doesn't the doors automatically unlock if you're parked and pull the door handle? It's how it was in every vehicle I've ever owned that had power locks.
They really need to start shipping cars with window breakers built in. Maybe those bars on the ceiling that you hang on to when you're screaming "holy fuck grandma slow down", maybe they could make them detachable and have a little pin in the end to break windows.
Yeah, like what if there's an emergency? What if the car suddenly catches on fire? What if there's a massive truck barreling down on your position? I guess I'll die. 🤷♂️
I still have enough faith that they mean they won't electronically unlock - that is, you can't open it with your fob, so make sure there's not babies inside. Just opening the handle from the inside will/should/might/god I hope still work.
I just bought a new Silverado and have had two of these updates. You have to option to delay the update indefinitely and choose when to update.
OP is being unreasonable in the way he's making it seem like this update was forced. It absolutely wasn't.
Not only that, the prompt to update only comes up when you’re parked. So he parked, hit “update now”, then took this picture like he’s being inconvenienced
I just got a new to me 3 year old car.
It came with the factory software from 2019, the previous owner never updated the software in 2020, 2021, or 2022, in 66000 km of driving.
What did those software updates add in that time? Android auto, updated maps, and updated controls for the car, and connectivity to the app.
That I needed to do 5 updates in order, and that was a pain meant I sent an annoyed letter to the dealership that they should have done that for me (they've been dealing with me for 8 years). But I'm really glad my car has android auto now... which it would have had from the day the guy bought it if he installed the software the day he bought it.
Windows always warns me when an update is pending, and it tells me the update is scheduled to happen outside of the hours when I normally use my computer, and it offers me a chance to reschedule. But in fact, no matter what I do, the update never happens until I click "update now."
To get to the screen OP's at, you have to select to start the update. IIRC, it won't even do anything unless you're in park. I've also got a similar truck (slightly older) that does periodic OTA updates maybe once a year. Pretty sure it won't even tell me it's got an update queued up unless it's in park and the engine is off.
Also, all of them have said "May take up to 15 minutes".....but I don't recall one taking more than 2 or 3 at most.
Basically, this isn't nearly as absurd as OP makes it seem. OP had to park their truck and then select to start the update. The last update (december?), I scheduled it to run at midnight....and it ran at midnight. No issues whatsoever.
Do you also say that about your phone? Obviously with the amount of software there is in newer machinery there has to be some downtime for updates and patches.
Just schedule it for 2am while it's charging.
Yeah i dont get it.
If you Update your phone and an emergency Happens, you will not be able to cal 911.
Obviously you start updating when you go to sleep (or arrived at home in case of the car).
Depending on the Update, it’s being flashed in the ECUs of the vehicle - resulting into launching them into bootloader mode and installing the new software. Of course functions are disabled at this state.
The software updating is the least of your worries with new cars. Automakers can and do sell your personal data:
> The study found that automakers are collecting more data than necessary, not just how fast or where we drive, but demographics of drivers and passengers.
> They even went further to say some of the automakers gather deeply personal data, such as sexual activity, immigration status, race, facial expressions, weight, health, and genetic information.
> "Researchers found data is being gathered by sensors, microphones, cameras, and the phones and devices drivers connect to their cars, as well as by car apps, company websites, dealerships, and vehicle telematics," wrote Mozilla.
https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/new-study-finds-that-automakers-collect-too-much-personal-information-about-drivers/
That's where I got the quotes from, but it was all over most outlets last week.
Here's the original study: [https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/blog/privacy-nightmare-on-wheels-every-car-brand-reviewed-by-mozilla-including-ford-volkswagen-and-toyota-flunks-privacy-test/](https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/blog/privacy-nightmare-on-wheels-every-car-brand-reviewed-by-mozilla-including-ford-volkswagen-and-toyota-flunks-privacy-test/)
>The very worst offender is Nissan. The Japanese car manufacturer admits in their privacy policy to collecting a wide range of information, including sexual activity, health diagnosis data, and genetic data — but doesn’t specify how. They say they can share and sell consumers’ “preferences, characteristics, psychological trends, predispositions, behavior, attitudes, intelligence, abilities, and aptitudes” to data brokers, law enforcement, and other third parties.
What? Lmao
Fucking hell, thanks for letting me know to not buy a car that was build after 2015…
But seriously, this kind of data collecting happens so much these days and you can’t avoid it if you don’t want to live in a forest somewhere. Always when read stuff like this I think that I should be more careful with my data but in the end it’s just too convenient to use all of the tech stuff… I hope that the EU laws give me at least some kind of protection compared to Americans
>The software updating is the least of your worries with new cars. Automakers can and do sell your personal data:
lol no, the info selling is the "least of the problem" here.
Being locked in my car and not being able to drive it while stuck on the side of the highway is a much, much bigger deal.
I couldn't give less of a fuck about them selling marketing information. Hijacking the car I paid for, though?
Update is scheduled and can be delayed as much as you want.
OP is just a shitposter.
As for car function during Update - it’s the same with your phone.
Devices need to go into bootloader mode to install an update. In this Time no function is given by the ECU as it need to conecentrate on the Update procedure.
Even if they would allow to Keep the function - there would be a huge Chance to brick the device of your ignition turns off/you somehow disrupt the device with a function call/…
My wife did this with our car. She took the kids to school and put the car in park and missed the do you want to update now message and clicked yes. She had to wait 20 minutes for it to complete before she could leave.
Yep, fuck new cars. I drive a 2015, and that’s about as new as I ever want to go. I want a car for transportation, not a computer on wheels. And I don’t want it surveilling me or arguing with the way I drive.
I bought a new 2016 civic and the salesman tried to sell me on the model with all the “safety features,” extra cams, built-in GPS, contact storage, media hub, proximity sensors… I said naw I just want a car that goes forward and sometimes backward. I ain’t rolling around in a car that’s gonna lock up because the fuse that controls the espresso maker blew.
Hate to break it to you, but most cars since the 2000s have been computers on wheels. My 03 has nearly 20 computers in it lol.
Granted, nowadays those computers are connected to the internet so auto makers can sell your data.
My GMC Sierra gets these and I get to choose when to do it, I have never had this happen without clicking the start button. Why did you stop on the side of the highway and start it, for clicks? ;)
Because he did. I’ve got a 2022 Silverado and if it’s not convenient for me to update, I’ll hit “install later” and do it when I get home
It doesn’t just happen out of the blue, but this post lets redditors continue to rage against the machine like it’s 1984
I have a 2023 sierra elevation, you have the option to update it will not automatically run. It gives you two warning screens before hand and it warns you about not being able to use the vehicle during the update.
You can also REFUSE the update and have a dealer do it for you on your next service. The last update that rolled out I installed it last week was for the recall and was supposed to rectify the issue even those would not automatically update you still had to agree to it and confirm it.
Oh i can never see this becoming an issue….
Wife giving birth? Wait, your seat warmer software subscription is expired!
Kid broke their arm? Hold on, your over-due for your last tire rotation!
Heart attack? Let us just complete this vital software update first….
This post is exaggerating the problem. The car won’t update if it’s being driven period. The car will allow you to push back the update infinitely unless it’s a safety patch. The car won’t update in certain conditions like excessive heat or cold if a passenger is inside.
I don't want anything to do with this, not that I could afford a new car, anyway.
I don't have a doorbell camera, I just never answer the door.
My car is a '96, the computer tells me the gas mileage I'm supposedly getting. I ignore it. All the controls are buttons and knobs, I like that, no touch screens for me.
Probably, my highest piece of tech is my iPhone. I make actual phone calls on it, text my son, and use it for the GPS navigation once in a while. Rarely, I'll take a picture or a video with it.
I've never used ChatGPT, or any of the other "AI" things, but I'm well aware of them.
Excuse me, I'm currently exploring Arane II in Starfield, and I can't figure out why my survey amount is stuck at 96%. I guess I gotta take off and land somewhere else, for a third time?
all these new horseshit features on cars is so backwards. give me a car where i can turn the key, has A/C, bluetooth, and a fucking engine and i’m good to go. i don’t need lane assist, voice control, heated steering wheel, or fucking automatic headlights
Why do we live in a world where a vehicle needs to update? Just like TV's, coffee makers, refrigerators and a bunch of other modern appliances that need updates to work correctly.
I have a car from 1977 that's never needed an update, and it still runs like new.
Yeah, but a 1977 car is missing countless safety and comfort driving features available in modern cars. You might be fine with that, but let me tell you that adaptive cruise control and lane keeping tech reduces effort by 90%...
You might as well say that your 1977 telephone never needed updates like it does now.
Theres a matching comment somewhere on Reddit that starts "I dont understand why this isnt updated yet...."
Wanna know a secret? My TV has apps and I want them to work well. I want my TV to have bug fixes and new features. If I paid for a new car with fancy features? I want them tuned and updated to reflect the price I paid.
As many have pointed out (and no one is upvoting), OP opted for this update. It wont force an update when youre driving your pregnant wife, or ever.
But that all doesnt let us piss and moan about our cool, expensive toys that are just SO awful. :)
Well to be fair, you are the one who bought the truck which needs updates and oven which need wifi. It’s annoying companies are doing this but people are buying this shit soooo
I too own one of these trucks - You opted to start the update, it will never force one without you first giving approval. You didn’t read the message on the screen and agreed to do the install.
Also, you’re trying to make it seem like it forced you to the side of the road and trapped you there which isn’t possible either. How desperate for fake internet points are you???
less electronics in the car,
the cheaper it is to repair,
the less problems there are if anything will go wrong.
if I had to buy a car it would be a older one
This is just pure insanity to me. OTA updates are OK for some things, but the idea that basic vehicle functions can be affected is crazy. The thing jeep had a while back where the AC and heater were unusable because of an OTA and you couldn't roll back or block it and just had to wait for a fix would have had me fuming

WTF?
Don't buy gmc
Don't buy new cars. My dad's Silverado has so much wrong with it (it's a '22). Meanwhile I have a 2011 Silverado and it still works great

It's a 23'. You SHOULD have zero regrets so far.
Exactly. Why is that the standard lmfao
I went from Subaru (3x) to Toyota. Best decision ever.
Don’t sleep on Mazda my friend. Better than Honda right now IMHO
Does it have all the annoyances of a lot of modern cars? Like the big unresponsive screen and having to go through multiple screens to find the ac controls?
'23 CRVs have wonderfully responsive touchscreens. Even better, they have *knobs on the dashboard* to control the AC.
Cars NEED to keep physical buttons and knobs Can’t operate a touchscreen without looking at it!
My wife and I bought a brand new 22 Mazda CX-30 and absolutely love everything about it. All the bells and whistles we could realistically need and physical knobs and buttons to control the climate control.
I hope they completely redesigned the ac system from the previous generation, you’ll know in about 2 years or around 45k….

Yes! I love my 23 CRV! I upgraded from a 14 in the spring.

I have a 22 frontier and sonata. Might be American car makers cars.
My 22 accord has manual AC controls. It has the big touch screen, but nothing is more than 1-2 taps away. 10/10 highly recommend this car.
As does the CRV. It’s extremely practical with very little reliance on the touch screen.
[удалено]
I think in general you can really only expect those annoyances on American brands. They somehow haven't caught up to the rest of the world.
Get back to us in a few years. That's still too fresh to make the "best ever" category.
Right? Who owns a brand new car and says "it's the best car I've ever owned" before it's even paid off.
The new crvs are soooo nice. It was hard to pass on one.
I will buy Honda for the rest of my life. Last 3 cars were Honda and they’re still on the road.
Do new CRVs have CVT transmissions?
Right? I went from a '09 Pontiac Vibe to a '22 Corolla and holy shit, new cars are SO COOL. The adaptive cruise control?! That blew my mind the first time I realized what the car was doing.

It’s annoying in anything but main highway driving. When driving on the intestate though it’s a godsend.

That's where electric comes in. Stays exactly the speed you set it at all times unless there's traffic in front of you.
Which is the only place I use cruise control anyway.
I hate it for when a car semi cuts me off and it brakes hard to restore the gap. Otherwise it's great for when the other person isn't using cruise and their speed is wondering.
Yeah pretty wild statement to say "don't buy new cars" because of one or two personal anecdotal experiences.

Wow, it really did take out that Durango. I never appreciated what a pain in the ass something as simple as a tree can be until I owned property.
I'd seen what they could do many times, but didn't truly appreciate just how much damage they could do until they creamed our cars. https://preview.redd.it/ek5s7jwcdaob1.jpeg?width=3120&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=189bcc0aaab99280d423aa69179262acdcd7bb90 That there's the Silverado, she got hit by a branch about as wide as my thigh. Had 2012 Outback that was a tank and resold for almost what I paid for it Have a 2017 that is just as amazing I will drive Outbacks for the rest of my life if they keep this up.
I've got an '07 with 260,000. It's indestructible lol
Our 2017 Silverado is complete garbage. Air conditioner broke after year 1, transmission started failing after year 3.
I have a 17 Silverado and it's amazing. Going on 4 years now and only needed new tires and oil changes.
The new GM trucks are apparently an electrical nightmare
and the ugliest vehicles on the road & some of the most dangerous (to others) vehicles on the road. Great combo....
Over 450 people can't think of a nuanced solution other than not buying a new car?
Eh. Don't buy American in general. Very little wrong with the new models of the better Japanese cars. Honda, Toyota and Subaru all have excellentquality and track records (we don't talk about Nissan). A '22 Taco is gonna be a way better buy than a '22 Chevy.

Well yeah obviously. That's been obvious for like 30 years dude.
Um, I drive a platform-mate to that vehicle and you can decline the update and defer it until you're parked at home. This is just rage bait.
Why buy American at all?
You either want a giant truck or want the least expensive thing possible.
Isn’t gmc getting rid of apple car play or did they already do that
We know that as all of GM sucks.

A good friend of mine drives a 1931 Ford Model A Coupe. The car was built before the word ‘computer’ existed!
Fun fact: Before computers were machines, it was a job title of someone who would compute.
Laughs in Toyota 😏
That's one perk of having an interior from a decade ago in brand new cars
Beats replacing the entire car every 70k miles 😂
True. GM vehicles do be shit. Not so much Ford's tho
Toyota makes you pay to use the remote start system that is already installed. Same move BMW pulled with heated seats. Toyota is late to the EV game, but I wouldn't be surprised to see something like this on their cars. Just because they have a good reliability reputation doesn't mean everything they do is good.
Lmao. That fucking remote thing. I was considering getting a taco, then I found out a subscription is needed for fucking remote start lol.
Jesus. I have to use the app to remote start my Ford, but it's at least free.

"locked doors will not unlock" That has to be illegal

That's the one. I thought it caught fire. I just remembered it was a heat related death Edit: a word
I think it was a Tesla that someone couldn’t get unlocked while it was on fire
Tesla does have emergency manual door unlocks, but they really should make it more known as to where they are and they should put them in more accessible places for safety and efficiency. Kinda scary that some people don't even know they have them.

Another reason why everyone should have an easily accessible escape tool. That way he could have at least broken the window.
Doesn't the doors automatically unlock if you're parked and pull the door handle? It's how it was in every vehicle I've ever owned that had power locks.
Thats how it should work. I've never owned a vette so I can't confirm that though
They really need to start shipping cars with window breakers built in. Maybe those bars on the ceiling that you hang on to when you're screaming "holy fuck grandma slow down", maybe they could make them detachable and have a little pin in the end to break windows.
Sure, but you also shouldn't have to *break your fucking window* to avoid death because your car decides you're no longer allowed to leave.
Yeah, like what if there's an emergency? What if the car suddenly catches on fire? What if there's a massive truck barreling down on your position? I guess I'll die. 🤷♂️
This is why you have a window breaker easily accessible in any vehicle.
I mean yea but it shouldnt be mandatory to simply exit your vehicle when its not damaged.
It's why you're able to delay updates in every car I've ever seen. This is a post for karma
I still have enough faith that they mean they won't electronically unlock - that is, you can't open it with your fob, so make sure there's not babies inside. Just opening the handle from the inside will/should/might/god I hope still work.
I’m sorry, what? There’s no way to force it to not update and just drive? What about if it’s an emergency?
I just bought a new Silverado and have had two of these updates. You have to option to delay the update indefinitely and choose when to update. OP is being unreasonable in the way he's making it seem like this update was forced. It absolutely wasn't.
Not only that, the prompt to update only comes up when you’re parked. So he parked, hit “update now”, then took this picture like he’s being inconvenienced
As if the fact that a car needs software updates that render it unusable isn't an inconvenience in the first place.
Id rather this than our old method of software updates. You used to have to leave the car at the dealership and make it unusable for a day or more!!
I'd rather have no updates at all, just functioning cars
I prefer my cars to have actual electronics in them.

You can just delay the update until a time when you don't need to use your car for 15 minutes. It's a mild inconvenience.
You can choose to schedule these updates. Someone didn't.
If working with PC's everyday has taught me one thing, its that update schedulers like to just ignore your suggestions sometimes...
All my homies hate windows updater.
Android too. It'll harass you for a couple of days, then it'll just update itself out of nowhere when it's not in use and has enough battery.
Keep the battery below 25%, problem solved.
Windows always warns me when an update is pending, and it tells me the update is scheduled to happen outside of the hours when I normally use my computer, and it offers me a chance to reschedule. But in fact, no matter what I do, the update never happens until I click "update now."
Scheduled or not, if there’s an emergency, it should never prevent the car from being operated.
Oh, I agree entirely. I was just pointing out that OP's situation could have been avoided.
I have a 2020 Sierra and it never tries updating while driving but who knows, maybe the 2023/2024\~ models just update differently now?
Yeah that was what I was thinking, OP definitely had chances to update earlier. No way you get this message without earlier warnings
So what, why is there an update to begin with?
It's just a regular software update like you get for anything that runs software that can be updated.
It shouldn’t require the vehicle to not be driven. Or better yet, have it set to be done when getting an oil change

Don’t tell us, it’s… operator error?!
The software updating is the least of your worries with new cars. Automakers can and do sell your personal data: > The study found that automakers are collecting more data than necessary, not just how fast or where we drive, but demographics of drivers and passengers.
I don't doubt you I just want to read all of it
https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/new-study-finds-that-automakers-collect-too-much-personal-information-about-drivers/ That's where I got the quotes from, but it was all over most outlets last week.
Ty ty I really appreciate it
Here's the original study: [https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/blog/privacy-nightmare-on-wheels-every-car-brand-reviewed-by-mozilla-including-ford-volkswagen-and-toyota-flunks-privacy-test/](https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/blog/privacy-nightmare-on-wheels-every-car-brand-reviewed-by-mozilla-including-ford-volkswagen-and-toyota-flunks-privacy-test/)
What? Lmao
Never wanted a Nissan anyways. Ever.
Full on Westworld crap right there.
Gracias man I appreciate it
Fucking hell, thanks for letting me know to not buy a car that was build after 2015… But seriously, this kind of data collecting happens so much these days and you can’t avoid it if you don’t want to live in a forest somewhere. Always when read stuff like this I think that I should be more careful with my data but in the end it’s just too convenient to use all of the tech stuff… I hope that the EU laws give me at least some kind of protection compared to Americans
>The software updating is the least of your worries with new cars. Automakers can and do sell your personal data: lol no, the info selling is the "least of the problem" here.
Disgusting
They know when I’m jerking off while driving? That should be illegal
My wife did this with our car. She took the kids to school and put the car in park and missed the do you want to update now message and clicked yes. She had to wait 20 minutes for it to complete before she could leave.
Omg was she in a parking spot or just in the drop off line? I can imagine the stress if she was stuck in the drop off line!
Luckily it was just in a parking spot. If it was in dropoff she would of died.
Yep, fuck new cars. I drive a 2015, and that’s about as new as I ever want to go. I want a car for transportation, not a computer on wheels. And I don’t want it surveilling me or arguing with the way I drive.
Idk man, I'm pretty annoyed my 16 outback can't connect properly to my phone, it has just enough computer in it to be super unhelpful
Replace your head unit.
Totally agree. It's a work truck so it's even worse. Got places to be!
So why didn't you delay the update?
Well I'm a dumb farmer and I hit the button thinking it wouldn't interfere with basic vehicle functions like driving
Why did you stop on the side of the highway and start it, for clicks? ;)
Not to mention the X in the top left corner that would most likely cancel this.
Exactly this. I guarantee you OP approved this update
Because he did. I’ve got a 2022 Silverado and if it’s not convenient for me to update, I’ll hit “install later” and do it when I get home It doesn’t just happen out of the blue, but this post lets redditors continue to rage against the machine like it’s 1984
99% of the posts on /r/assholedesign could be resolved with some critical thinking or some minor problem solving
Funny how they reply to lots of other comments apart from these ones.
Rage bait makes for the best posts
Yeah cmon guys you have to click the yes button before the car updates for 15-20 minutes and you can drive again. It’s perfectly reasonable
100% or is scared of big technologically advanced vehicle 🥺👉🏻👈🏻
Oh i can never see this becoming an issue…. Wife giving birth? Wait, your seat warmer software subscription is expired! Kid broke their arm? Hold on, your over-due for your last tire rotation! Heart attack? Let us just complete this vital software update first….
Please complete the survey to open your passenger side door.

Well, at least it gave you 21 seconds to find a safe place to pull over. What if you were on a highway in say, California, in the far left lane? Geez.
This post is exaggerating the problem. The car won’t update if it’s being driven period. The car will allow you to push back the update infinitely unless it’s a safety patch. The car won’t update in certain conditions like excessive heat or cold if a passenger is inside.
I will NEVER in my life buy a car that needs to be connected to the internet for whatever fucking reason all the time.
Good luck with that in 10 years. Seriously though, good luck and let me know if find one cause I will buy it then lol
Spent his car money on a GPU.
check the waters, there might be fish
These updates aren’t forced, you choose when too. OP is doing this for karma.
I can't wait until they replace the steering wheel with a screen. 🙃
With ads.
Logitech controller like the Titan
all these new horseshit features on cars is so backwards. give me a car where i can turn the key, has A/C, bluetooth, and a fucking engine and i’m good to go. i don’t need lane assist, voice control, heated steering wheel, or fucking automatic headlights
Theres a matching comment somewhere on Reddit that starts "I dont understand why this isnt updated yet...." Wanna know a secret? My TV has apps and I want them to work well. I want my TV to have bug fixes and new features. If I paid for a new car with fancy features? I want them tuned and updated to reflect the price I paid. As many have pointed out (and no one is upvoting), OP opted for this update. It wont force an update when youre driving your pregnant wife, or ever. But that all doesnt let us piss and moan about our cool, expensive toys that are just SO awful. :)
Right!? Even my oven is on wifi
Well to be fair, you are the one who bought the truck which needs updates and oven which need wifi. It’s annoying companies are doing this but people are buying this shit soooo
Its a work truck. I'd never buy this crap
Please park in a secure area. You have 21 seconds to comply.
less electronics in the car, the cheaper it is to repair, the less problems there are if anything will go wrong. if I had to buy a car it would be a older one
Are you untethered yet & your rage knows no bounds?
Underrated reference
You know what don't require updates? Old cars.
I’m far more curious about the plate carrier. Law enforcement?
Lol he's wearing Carhartt overalls.
