First day on the job for the camera man

TheRealClose

r/KillTheCameraMan

AC465

Yea, fact that the cameraman turned right at impact was mildly infuriating.

Car-Facts

It looks like he is on a wharf that is attached to that bridge that was hit. If that's the case, he probably braced for impact because that big fucker hitting the bridge woukd be like a massive earthquake to any attached structure.

Humledurr

I'd even say it was very infuriating, maybe go as far as extremely infuriating

Sikirash

Mildly!?

[deleted]

The only thing I can think of is that they could have been showing a tug boat was propelling the larger boat. But 1. It was such a quick move away I have no idea if that is even the case. 2. Establish that afterwards.

DominoTimmy

Unbelievable. “Oh hey what’s over there?”

Bromm18

Bad news: bridge is down Good news: boats can get further upriver now.

Mcardle82

The Vikings will be happy

mymorningjacket

Not if the Packers have anything to do with it

JBHedgehog

Oh, geez..you got dat right right 'dere!

[deleted]

Tell yer folks I says hi now.

JBHedgehog

Oh, sure will! And how's yer' Mom doin'? I still have her casserole from the other week. It's all clean, and wrapped up in a nice bag for her...you know...whenever she can drop by. You have a great one, now!

[deleted]

Ah geez, you don't hafta do dat! We're doin' a perch fry if the skeeters aren't too bad, I'll bring you some by and swap dishes. Ma's good just keepin' er movin'. Watch out fer deer now.

JBHedgehog

Oh yeah, always eyes open for the deer! And we'll give you a call when we put the house up on the ice. I heard the almanac call for some good Walleye this year...so that's really nice! Have a good one, now, okay?

[deleted]

Oh you betcha. Just gotta new auger down at the Fleet Farm. Always best to buy off season don'tcha know?

JBHedgehog

Aw, heck ya! Farm and Barn...they took out the seeds so early this year! But I think we're gonna' get a new auger too...'cause I broke the tip off mine last year and it's at the bottom of a lake!

Pepu_Du_Pig

Hey neighbors, we hafin’ a friendly conversation? Ya know, I’m hafin’ a family get together down by down at Billy Bob’s if you two would like ta go. Go ahead and bring a plus one, or even take yer folks, I’m sure they would love ta go.

JBHedgehog

Should I bring pie, cake or casserole?

[deleted]

Spose I'll come by too. I'll bring by some Hamm's.

FarmerLarBear

Youuu betcha!

Tbagjimmy

Da Bears

JBHedgehog

Oh, golly...are you from down there in Illinois? Well...you have a great day anyway! We'll see you in October!

Real_King_Of_Nothing

Aww damn, why'd you have to remind me I'm a Vikings fan? I *was* happy that it's Friday. ^(Everyday of the week is depressing when you're a Vikings fan.)

The structure on the right side of the video looks like a lock. Ships could probably go further up this waterway anyways.

mountaineer04

Probably not since the river will be more shallow now.

YourLocal_FBI_Agent

It's a bridge, not a dam right?

ThePerfectAwesome

Maybe both… Captain was definitely thinking “Damn Bridge!”

soullow13

More shallow since there is a bridge and bridge debris in the water now. Also, the river is likely naturally more shallow in that direction which is why such a low bridge was installed in the first place. If the water was deeper, they would bring boats into there, but they’re not.

GooberSmoocharoo

Nah, engineers don't care about location, location, location. Look where they put our nations tech and research hub, right on a fault line!

condscorpio

Dam right!

ThiagoCururu

Also may be something for the folks at r/fuckcars

[deleted]

Or r/shittyskylines

EvoTivo82

Probably not, most likely it's too shallow up river for any vessels to go.

alfonseski

Ya what was the goal there? "We need you to bring this ship down this river and over to this town. Only problem is there is a bridge in the way. Any ideas guys?" "Nope none" "Just figure something out, we are paying you enough for this job"

Mohecan

The moment of impact missed… r/killthecameraman

Rammoses

It's the shipvolution! Burn all the bridges! Waterways must be free! Genuinely though, where I live there's a conspiracy theory that captains keep running into bridges in order to cut down on travel time for other ships. Not having to wait for every bridge to open/close on their path means they can just speed along

noscopy

Seems perfectly reasonable for a benevolent cabal of water faring adventures. I bet they draw lots for who's gotta punch the next hole for freedom.

SuccessfulBroccoli68

I hope something parallel with 9/11 becomes a thing.

jakedesnake

Well this video is years old so....

wino12312

I thought so. How old?

euclid0472

Years old

Natural-Definition-7

Enough to add "many" ?

why would there be a collection of \*not\* filmed incidents?

For the same reason a bar near me has a photocopy of every fake driver's license on the wall behind the counter. Shame.

Rooster_Ties

Yeah, if only the cameraman had kept the ship in the frame the entire time, just think how much he could have sold that video for!!

thismissinglink

How are ppl so bad at taking videos honestly?

A_1337_Canadian

Because we naturally want to watch with our eyes, not with the camera screen.

thismissinglink

Its not hard to line up the shot and then watch lmao. He had a pretty bug target.

[deleted]

Yeah generally I'll agree with the above sentiment, but this was the easiest putt I've ever seen someone miss

Littleman88

Many people are just bad at *everything*. This is how focused this bloke is with a camera anticipating disaster. Imagine how they are behind the wheel during a routine drive?

TheHarpyEagle

Or, OR, in the moment they were more concerned about their immediate safety and checking their footing than they were about a candid video.

fruitmask

already posted there. 2 years ago, in fact: https://www.reddit.com/r/ThatLookedExpensive/comments/ibxnhp/chinese_ship_crashing_into_a_pedestrian_bridge_at/

I have nothing against repost, but it sucks if they leave out really relevant information, like here: >Chinese ship crashing into a pedestrian bridge at the Ecuadorian Naval Shipyard. Ecuador 16/06/2020

TheDarthSnarf

First day for the tugboat captain pushing it from the stern? First day for the pilot?

From when this was first posted I believe it was a mechanical failure that prevented the ship from slowing down

Im_ArrangingMatches

https://www.reddit.com/r/CatastrophicFailure/comments/ibp0ro/comment/g1ygx41/

ItsSomethingLikeThat

Well that's depressing.

upsidedownbackwards

I was thinking "How could it be that depressing? The bridge looks empty and the boat probably wasn't damaged too bad". Best guess was that the captain had a heart attack and that's why things went south. But wow, that is pretty awful/depressing.

nolan1971

Thank you! I knew that I'd seen this before. These comments should be much higher.

imtourist

Chinese ship destroying a bridge in Ecuador. The link from the story originally stated that this ship was caught illegally fishing in another countries waters and on top of that was fishing protected species of shark and other animals. China really is a cancer on the world.

m7x3

How do this things happen? Dont they see it comming like 300m away?

athleticoskinwah

Takes a long long time to slow down a ship that big.

Beingabummer

Sure. But, it's a bridge. It's not that the bridge jumped in front of the ship. It's a bridge. If you're getting surprised by a bridge being where it is, don't operate ships.

Redman5012

This bridge wasn't here yesterday!

DarkKimzark

Well, it won't be there tomorrow for sure

punkindle

Cue the Looney Tunes clip where she gets her hair done and they installed a fire hydrant in front of her car while she was inside.

It was a funny angle!

havik09

Funny angle? When you drive forward, thing come from in front of you

cake__eater

You’re a famous boat driver, ain’t ya Tyrone.

havik09

Bahahah. I can hear this. One of my favourite movies. I backed into a snowbank at work and a co worker said WTF, I replied "it was a funny angle" and he just smiled and FUNnY angle, when you're asking up things come from behind you" we laughed so hard. We became good friends

Ser_Lebron_Targaryen

It's too tight.

I_Am_Vladimir_Putin

You could park a fucking jumbo jet in there

kid_sleepy

Don’t move it now, they’ll see the damage.

ricktencity

Looks like maybe a malfunction? You can see some tugs behind the ship presumably trying to slow it down. Maybe the throttle got stuck on?

trotski94

They lost control and/or power. Nobody intentionally did this.

feffie

Hitting a bridge helps though.

Irythros

If I recall for this one, they lost power.

t00sl0w

Most likely a mechanical failure. Places like this also tend to have local experts go on board and pilot the ships into port.

ricktencity

Seems that way to me too, there's tugs behind trying to slow it down so maybe throttle got stuck open or something.

Galaghan

It takes a lot more than 300m to stop a boat of this size.

[deleted]

on3day

The bridge is under construction so might not be on maps. Here in the west most rivers are overseen and you get a lot of intel. Looks like a less developped country where this is taking place.

on3day

Also somewhere in the backhand of China?

pungentsoup

It takes kilometres to stop a ship

Its_General_Apathy

Miles, even.

_invalidusername

Nautical miles even.

sundark94

I wouldn't put it on the captain of the ship, at least not entirely. Looks like he's arriving at some sort of wharf or canal. He needs to have a pilot vessel guiding him along the path because it's impossible to steer a large ship in a small area like that. I see a tugboat behind him, but no tugboat in front.

[deleted]

Every collision is *always* on the captain. As a former ship driver, there is always a way to avoid hitting *anything*. Even if they lost all power, then it can probably be attributed to poor maintenance from the engineering department, which is still the captain's responsibility. Edit: to clarify, other people can still have some degree of fault attributed to them as well, but at the end of the day, the ship is the captain's responsibility.

Ak47110

As a current ship driver, it's definitely not always on the captain. That was a dock they crashed into with a tug connected to them. They definitely would have had a pilot on board as well. There were many failures here and it's not all going to be on the master of the ship

[deleted]

I didn't say it was all on the captain, but he will be found at fault to some not-insignificant degree. Case in point: the Cosco Busan. The ship allided with the Bay Bridge in San Francisco with a pilot onboard, but guess who was still found at significant fault and fired? Well, the pilot *and* the captain. Having a pilot doesn't absolve the captain of responsibility. A captain is always responsible for his/her ship, regardless of tugs, pilots, weather, power, etc. I've *never* done a case study of a collision/allision that didn't end with a captain being fired.

fruitmask

> Every collision is always on the captain. then >I didn't say it was all on the captain, lol ok

Titan_Astraeus

Amazing how people feel so smug while missing all nuances/point of a comment.. It doesn't even matter if there's a pilot on board, the pilot is still under the authority of the captain and typically liability will fall on the captain. Have you ever seen star trek or something? Notice that captains don't actually pilot the vessel? They give orders, the pilots just replace the ships navigator, not the captain..

[deleted]

Also, every pilot ticket will state "pilot acts in advisory role only" or some such. It always comes down to the captain. If the pilot gives the order that is obviously an unsafe maneuver, the captain doesn't have to follow it.

[deleted]

I don't think you understand how maritime investigations work lol. There's enough blame to go around but a significant amount always lands on the captain because it's his ship, his responsibility.

Its_General_Apathy

I'm guessing control failure?

CaptJM

There is defined a mechanical failure happening here. They had speed as they were trying to sail into the lock. Likely the steering gear failed and they couldn’t turn into the lock and as someone pointed out. It takes a long time to stop a ship. Honestly the worst part is the tug boat that’s behind the ship could have helped if there was enough time.

Wirbelfeld

Captain had a heart attack and died

zyon86

More like last day on the job ! Lol

Camera man, you had one job

nvincent

Apparently this is a Chinese fishing ship, found with something like 300 tons of illegally caught sharks and other fish. Honestly, it is time to just flat out ban Chinese fishing vessels everywhere. They are all illegally fishing, and destroying ecosystems throughout the entire world.

The sheer amount of mass those things have is difficult to comprehend until you see videos like this. Went right through that what seems to be concrete? Bridge like it was nothing. Love big engineering feats like that, shame they are so bad for the environment etc.

jaylong15

The complete opposite of “Michael there’s a lake there!”

Sylux444

When two people refuse to move on a simple action

tehsecretgoldfish

in many cases there’s a pilot who knows the waterway and guides the ship in as the captain stands back and watches. this must be some backwater.

macronancer

Some people just park like this all the time. I think they call it "contact parking". You just back up until you hear a crunching sound.

Obviously ships like that take a long time to stop and change direction, but how do you not see that coming from crazy far away or on a map? I have to assume something malfunctioned in the ship itself.
