A cop ran a stop sign (no lights. Just felt like running it) and ran into my friend who was going 5 over. Another cop comes and gives friend a ticket for speeding but the cop doesn't get in trouble. Even though the squad car caught on FIRE. (Charger. Shit engine. It wasn't even that much of an impact)
They probably didn't have evidence of your friend going 5 over that would stand up in court and did that just to avoid consequences for the collision. If your friend didn't dispute the charge, they would have been at fault for the collision. If they disputed the ticket, they'd probably get it dismissed, and there would be less the cops can use to say your friend was at fault.
Friend told him he'd pay for the ticket if they'd file a claim for his truck being a loss. They agreed. There's actually a picture online of the cop car on fire and it makes me happy lol
I love the cover story…
“A second vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the police vehicle. No serious injuries were reported. The Gentry police office had a few scratches and bruises.”
Oh sure that’s what happened 🙄
The Chargers are just the worst idea for cop cars. I don’t know who talked agencies into these things as fleet cars, but it was a bad idea.
I actually like Chargers to drive, they are pretty fun as long as you are going in a straight line. But they are just not designed for fleet use and you cannot make them so without way more equipment.
Same here. Cop hit my friend and 4 people showed up to be witnesses. Cop was really cool and admitted fault and was joking around in a friendly way. He convinced everybody not to write a report and then set my friend up as the at fault driver. Went to court, reversed it, no penalty for the cop. ACAB

There's a podcast on the NPR network called "On Our Watch" which is a group of journalists using California's new law that requires public release of tons of new internal police documents (internal affairs, investigations, etc...)
There is some fucked. up. shit. Being revealed
I recommend the episode "Neglect of Duty" https://www.npr.org/podcasts/1226320906/on-our-watch
Probably doesn’t bring enough clicks. Traffic incidents between emergency services vehicles and civilian vehicles happen all the time. What probably happened is that insurance on both sides saw the dash cam and paid the drivers out without much fuss.
Source: I was sideswiped by FDNY, deemed not at fault and then got paid out. Not much to it.
You mean after all those DANGEROUS CRIMINALS were hauled in by this heroic officer? No, no, no, they have to put him on paid administrative leave and swap him to a county over to really teach him his lesson.
I mean I hate cops, but if you can't come to a full stop without hitting the car in front of you when they do something you're following too closely.
I hate how people act like the rules of the road don't exist. "I should be able to speed and follow too closely and if I hit someone it's their fault"
That wasn’t exactly the issue here. It wasn’t “cop slams on brakes, driver plows into him, cop at fault” it’s “cop makes move to the side which is (fairly) interpreted as pulling over, driver recognizes this and pulls left to pass at normal speed, cop pulls out into him”
There's actual video of this incident. I'm sure I've seen it somewhere...
The vehicle clearly is not following too closely. They're like 3-4 car lengths behind the cruiser. At worst they didn't react quickly and assertively enough, but it's also not unfathomable that they're just unprepared for the cruiser to do something totally outlandish like an impromptu U turn in the middle of traffic, and the driver took too long to figure out and commit to the best response.
Yep this would have been a fucked up case if it was entirely on the cops terms. They already showed they don't care for safety of people on the road why would they now care about proper justice being served.
Never tell anyone you have footage until it has been safely extracted from the camera. Releasing footage should be done on your terms and perhaps after consultation with a lawyer.
The speed limit is cropped out but if the judge requested the original footage (which I'm sure they did), that would be the only issue if the truck was over the speed limit at the time. Overall, the officer should have turned on his lights, pulled to the side, waited for passing traffic then hit the uturn. The officer is still at fault for the accident and it would be unwise for the judge to turn the attention back to the driver of the truck as it would look really biased since he hit an officer's car
Very easy for the judge to claim they were following too closely even though the cop did an illegal maneuver. The truth doesn't really matter when it's the cop and judge vs you ...
Even if it weren't a cop I think the dash cam guy would get hit for following too closely and be at-fault. The other vehicle would get a ticket for illegal u-turn, but dash cam guy 100% didn't leave enough space or reaction time to stop and it's his fault. Doesn't matter if the guy in front of you did it because he's an idiot or an asshole or a cop, if you don't leave enough room to stop, you are at fault.
He had enough space to stop, but it looked like the cop was pulling over so he only slowed down enough to safely pass the cop. Then at the last second the cop flips a bitch without checking his 6, there is no safe distance that can protect you from someone turning directly in front of you.
Exactly, people always arguing about safe following distance like its kind of a miracle bulletproof mechanism. It surely helps your reaction and you should take your distance but you still depend on the morons around you not doing something stupid.
I thought you had to maintain enough space to stop before hitting the car in front of you? Sure the cop pulled across all lanes but had they panic stopped for wildlife running on the road, still would have been rear ended.
isnt it amazing how the *heroic* defenders of law and order suddenly turned into incompetent violent sociopaths at exactly the same point of history where cameras became ubiquitous.
Didn't your driving instructor tell you not to make assumptions about what other drivers are doing?
"always treat every other driver like they are an idiot"
Pretty sure the highway patrol was flipping a u turn to pull over the black SUV going the opposite direction. You can see the cop flip his lights on right after it passes them and immediately trys turning.
I don't think anyone doubts that, but why the fuck would he flip a U turn without ANY warning? He flips his lights on and goes to the shoulder, my FIRST thought would be he's getting over to let you pass so he can quickly and safely turn around to follow the black SUV in the opposite direction. Instead he pulls off to the side for barely a moment and veers wildly back into the center of the street with no warning at all.
Total lack of thought.
no shit
the point is that this is not predictable behaviour. When you see someone pulling to the sidelane your first thought isnt going to be "oh he's gonna do a U turn." You do what you always do, you steer away because they seem to be pulling to the sidelane.
Lol. Local cop struck and killed a lawyer in a crosswalk. Lawyer had the right of way. I think the cop paid $34 in fees. He's still employed. Mf has a *track* record as well.

Bro, we've had cops on film murder people and they don't get charged until months of national protests...
I have a feeling that the good ol' boys are gonna let negligent manslaughter slide.
This exact thing happened to me and the u turn driver tried to say that I wasn't at a safe distance behind her so in reality it was my fault. Luckily the cop didn't accept that explanation but I always thought that maybe that explanation is right?
Looking like you're pulling over and stopping suddenly are not the same.
If that cop had stopped and then tried to u-turn, it probably wouldn't have ended this way.
(Maybe boat guy would still have ended up jackknifed in a ditch)
Instead, cops acted like they were pulling in on the shoulder and then veered across the road. There was no reason for the dashcam driver to stop UNTIL the cop decided to drive across the road at 90°. At which stage the gap had closed and it was too late.
Ludicrous behaviour.
it has happened to me enough times that now when i see someone pull to the right i just slow/stop until i figure out what in the hell they are doing. However.. Clearly it's a dangerous maneuver, and the cop is in the wrong.
I mean, technically and legally that would be the case in my country. If the cop had just slammed on the brakes because there was a deer. He would've rearended him too. That would've been an open and shut case. Pretty sure that could be applied here too
I think the guy could've stopped if the cop had only hit the brakes. The cop goes to the right side like he's pulling over though and the guy seems to move slightly left to go around him rather than attempt to come to a complete stop. Probably had his foot fully back on the gas by the time the cop started pulling into the middle to U-turn
Is that really the case?
I'm not American, so it may be different for you, but where I come from, the following driver must maintain the appropriate distance to still be able to stop even if the car in front makes an emergency / full stop.
Since the cop car signals before braking and making the turn, I believe it would be 100% the following drivers fault in this case here.
The cop did the equivalent of performing a U-turn from the right lane (the shoulder), across the left lane, and into the opposing direction, without significant warning. If somebody did such a thing on an actual two lane road, they would be at fault if an accident occured. It's on the cop for not checking their left side mirror also.
Without warning? He put his lights and sirens on, cammer didn't even slow down whatsoever. Lights and sirens literally mean caution, are you going to blame the ambo who's goes through a red light woth their sirens and lights as well?
None of the people in this video are fit to drive. The cop did a stupid, and the car behind him did a stupid. And the truck who veered off the road was especially stupid for following that close while towing a boat.
Always assume everyone on the road is dumb as shit if you want to avoid accidents.
...and they made that mistake because they were following too closely and didn't give themselves enough time to judge it properly.
On paper it will be marked as driving too closely.
Following too closely wasn't the issue, its that when the cop pulls off to the side to begin his move, the driver attempts to cross a double solid to go around him rather than use his brakes
Yeah I don’t think this is the cops fault. Someone does something sudden and unusual on the road, just slow down. There’s zero reason to speed up and pass so quickly under the assumption the cop is pulling over to the side. Crazy how common this is too, people leave no room for error
Yeah everyone is blaming the cop but the lights are flashing so like that's just an emergency vehicle and you need to give it more room and expect it to do things like that
The law in most places is 2 seconds behind the car in front of you. At the beginning of the video the cop passes a small post on the right side of the road. It takes the dash cam vehicle 2 seconds to reach that point. Legally, that was not tailgating.
It looked like the cop was pulling off onto the shoulder. The dash cam car moved over to the left to give him room. Then the cop pulled the U unexpectedly.
They were following too close. Same thing would have happened if the cop car would have had to emergency stop. If you are driving a huge barge on the road (truck and truck+boat) make sure to leave enough space.
Errrr, he was following him too closely. You should give yourself enough distance where you should be able to stop in time if someone slammed on their brakes. What the police did was unsafe, the dashcam driver was also unsafe.
Failure to yield to an emergency vehicle most likely. They had a ton of time to stop or even slow down but likely thought he was going to the curb and tried to go around by the way they started to veer over the double yellow.
Cop car should have checked before and after sticking his lights on to make sure it was safe to turn, but the cam car should have been further back and not assumed the cop car was pulling over to stop, especially after the lights went on. The truck with the trailer was either too fast, close, or not paying attention to the road. Only a fool breaks the 2 second rule. I still say it to myself when I'm driving, and it's worked well so far. Also saves a lot of unnecessary braking, especially on motorways.
Checking back, it’s just over 2 seconds between the cop popping their lights and the collision - so the cammer was following the rule, if only just.
Being further back would have avoided the crash, but it’s mostly on the cop to check their surroundings and give more warning.
The cop started braking and pulling off well before the lights went on. I counted 4 seconds between braking and impact. I believe the cop should be at fault here; lights don’t give you immunity to do something unsafe and that’s what happened. They should have signaled right, pulled off out of the lane, waited for tailing vehicles to pass, engage lights, perform u-turn only when safe.
Everyone forgets the safe distance rule. Yes cop sucks for not checking surroundings properly, but people behind him suck for not being further behind when their reaction time is clearly delayed.
Yep, cop is wrong here, but I also expect dash cam driver to start braking sooner instead of first swerving. Boat tower was too close to dash cam driver considering his load and tow. They shouldn t get the legal blame here, but the headaches from accident should be a lesson.
Good, then he won't be tailgating you anymore and creating a dangerous situation, while you only get to your destination .1 seconds later than if he hadn't passed you.
Obviously the cop doing a sudden turn like that is at fault, but I don't think it's a good first instinct to try to pass a car over double yellow when it suddenly starts doing something unexpected.
Your first reaction to something strange happening in front of you should always be to slow down. Not necessarily stop, but at least moderately press on the brakes, it will also act as a signal to start paying attention for everyone behind you.
Yeah this video needed to show mph and real time, otherwise we cannot tell the drivers intent. If the driver had been proper stopping distance, they should have stopped rather than pass? Looks a bit like the driver tries to pass, or perhaps just was too close and had to veer left to avoid. Either way, it's "too close" or "tried to pass recklessly/prematurely".
What if the cop car instead was having an accident rather than a u-turn? Driver would have just been too close to have a proper reaction, something they could have prevented.
I mean....a few people are for sure saying otherwise. There's already several comments saying he was following too closely or that he should have pulled over for the cop and other nonsense that makes literally zero sense
The cop was in the wrong but also the guy with the boat was following way too closely. Both things can be true. Not every situation has one person 100% at fault and everyone else 100% fault-free. More than one person can be criticized if you use your brain.
If an animal ran into the road and dashcam guy had to suddenly break, the boat guy would still run off the road because he was following too closely. If it's impossible for you to safely break in an emergency, you're following too close for conditions.
Keeping safety distance makes zero sense?
No idea how it's handled in the US but over here if you rear end someone it's always your fault. You have to keep enough distance for emergency braking. Which the dash cam driver and the truck with the boat both didn't do.
Feel like I'm going crazy reading all these comments. I think because it's a cop car and Ameicans hate the police so they want to blame it on them. Those 2 trucks were 100% not maintaining a safe following distance. In my country too the person who rear ends someone is always at fault because the rule is that you should follow at a distance that allows you to safely brake even if the car infront of you comes to a sudden stop.
Nah, I don't know why so many people are defending both trucks. Maintaining a safe distance is exactly for the unexpected. Even if cam thought the cop was pulling to the shoulder, he should have been slowing way down until he knows for sure what the situation is. I learned my lesson a month after I got my license. It was raining and the car in front of me juked a stalled car in our lane at the last minute. I missed the stalled car, barely, and ended up on the median buried in mud up to the floorboards.
Boat guy also has no excuse. I tow 50k+ miles a year with a trailer with tandem axles, great brakes (can lock all 4 wheels), and electronic brake controller that uses an accelerometer and custom application curves. I still drive as if the trailer had none at all. It takes a few seconds and saves so much headache
i truly wonder if everyone is at fault here. the cop for doing a dangerous maneuver, the car with the camera not following from a safe distance, and the pickup with the boat for again now following at a safe distance ( and probably not driving at a safe speed with heavy load)
please no hate I'm just curious
The dash cam car's following distance was fine, it looks like less because the cop broke hard and pulled off to the right. Dash cam car tries to pull to the left until he realizes the cop is doing a U-turn and can't do anything.
IDK how you're making ANY inferences about the truck with the boat, as you cannot see it until it passes.
Point is, the cop should not have made that move, plain and simple. If we wanted to get the guy, he should've pulled off to the side and made the U-turn when the coast was clear.
"The trooper initiated his emergency equipment and made a U-turn on the vehicle. The trooper failed to observe the traffic behind him. The driver of the truck directly behind the trooper was unable to avoid the collision," according to a statement from the Utah Highway Patrol.
at least the Utah Highway Patrol is admitting the negligence of the trooper, and the unavoidability of the crash. I feel like this bodes well for the POV truck in terms of a legal outcome.
Both the camera truck and the later boat pulling truck were following too closely. I know this because they were unable to come to a stop.
The cop turned on his flashers, he did not fully depart the roadway and began his turnaround. When you see a police car turn on the lights you give them room. This truck instead crossed the double yellow to go around the police car.
So while it's fun and sometimes justified to blame the cops, the cop wasn't in the wrong here.
It is very very obvious the truck is overpassing, not attempting to stop because why would he? The cops actions can be interpreted as:
1. pulling over
2. changes mind
3. wildly endangers everyone on the road by turning in the opposite direction
4. turns straight into another car, this is a serious violation as he does not have control of his own vehicle, is not aware of his surroundings, and is now going all over all sorts of lines
5. illegal U turn in the middle of the road after changing mind without even looking at traffic coming from EITHER direction
You have to go with what actually happened, not with what was in the cop's very small, crime-causing brain.
Change the situation to a non police car and a sudden stop in traffic for an object in the road. The filming vehicle is following too close. And the truck with the boat is way too close. Neither one could stop safely. You’re all just hating on the officer because he is an officer. If that is want you want to do then just write fuck the police and stop trying to justify it.
Cop is also on fault here...but. Passing a cop car suddenly stopping in front with the intention to cross double line without meaningful deceleration is the bigger problem here. Dashcam driver could have stopped easily but stayed on the pedelal.
If he had just done the turn without pulling off to the right first he would’ve had plenty of room and gotten out of the way. This cop is a terrible driver.
Cop probably got a promotion after he gave them all tickets for dangerous driving.

Actually [this one](https://www.businessinsider.com/indiana-cop-ticket-hitting-killing-lawyer-with-car-fort-wayne-2023-9#:~:text=A%20police%20officer%20in%20Indiana,be%20charged%20in%20Najdeski's%20death.) but absolutely insane it happens this often.
Ah, all the careless cops slaughtering people blur together for me
Bro, we've had cops on film murder people and they don't get charged until months of national protests... I have a feeling that the good ol' boys are gonna let negligent manslaughter slide.
This ain't that world, friend.
Yes, agreed. Anyone who makes even one single mistake should never work again and die in poverty and shame.
Hahahaha it is, because he's going to get promoted to Chief of Police probably.
you must be new to planet earth.
Cop is clearly wrong, didnt even verify if there was a car behind him. Just imagine if the other truck has family inside and sustained injury.
(Maybe boat guy would still have ended up jackknifed in a ditch) Instead, cops acted like they were pulling in on the shoulder and then veered across the road. There was no reason for the dashcam driver to stop UNTIL the cop decided to drive across the road at 90°. At which stage the gap had closed and it was too late. Ludicrous behaviour.
Agreed, cop should’ve pulled over and came to a complete stop, let the cars behind him pass then whipped his U-turn when the roadway was clear.
Or oncoming was 2 lanes and clear, he could have slowed down in his current lane and whipped to the *other* shoulder to complete the u-turn.
it has happened to me enough times that now when i see someone pull to the right i just slow/stop until i figure out what in the hell they are doing. However.. Clearly it's a dangerous maneuver, and the cop is in the wrong.
Better safe than sorry yeah.
Considering the cop has his lights on, putting your foot back on the gas is pretty idiotic.

[удалено]
The dash cam driver and the truck with the boat didn't keep safety distance tho.
Even with the dash camera video the police will say you were following to closely.
The guy towing the boat was definitely following too closely.
Yeah, he definitely didn't leave enough stopping room. Fucked himself on that one. Looks like a Raptor as well which is a shitty tow vehicle.

Raptor around the bed of his truck.
![gif](giphy|i1H8G49C3XunpEBfQW)
Raptor is fine as a tow vehicle. Just doesn't have the capacity of a regular F-150 because of the jumpy jumpy parts.
And his reaction time is on par with elderies that shouldnt drive
He doesn't seem to be attempting to stop though. He thinks the cop is pulling over to the shoulder and he can just drive around him
Can't imagine a cop turning on their lights and me thinking "I'm just going to quickly pass him".
If they weren't able to stop in time, then they were following too closely
That's not the mistake here. Here the mistake was assuming the cop car was parking on the right AND not slowing down to overtake.
...and they made that mistake because they were following too closely and didn't give themselves enough time to judge it properly. On paper it will be marked as driving too closely.
Cause it is. The cop had his lights on and didn’t fully leave the lane while the driver barely slowed down if at all before the cop hung a uturn.
Following too closely wasn't the issue, its that when the cop pulls off to the side to begin his move, the driver attempts to cross a double solid to go around him rather than use his brakes
[удалено]
Yeah I don’t think this is the cops fault. Someone does something sudden and unusual on the road, just slow down. There’s zero reason to speed up and pass so quickly under the assumption the cop is pulling over to the side. Crazy how common this is too, people leave no room for error
Yeah everyone is blaming the cop but the lights are flashing so like that's just an emergency vehicle and you need to give it more room and expect it to do things like that
Brake. And cammmer was following too closely for his mental processing speed.
That's because he didn't have time to properly assess the situation.
Because he was too close.
lol. Seems pretty easy doesn’t it?
The law in most places is 2 seconds behind the car in front of you. At the beginning of the video the cop passes a small post on the right side of the road. It takes the dash cam vehicle 2 seconds to reach that point. Legally, that was not tailgating. It looked like the cop was pulling off onto the shoulder. The dash cam car moved over to the left to give him room. Then the cop pulled the U unexpectedly.
Believe the law is adequate stopping distance for conditions. No lawyer would approve a time behind a vehicle due to liability.
If you're coming to a situation like that, your first point of assessment should be to brake
They had a ton of time to stop or even slow down but likely thought he was going to the curb and tried to go around by the way they started to veer over the double yellow.
but he was? there is reason for safe distance yes more than one can be at fault
You leave a 2 second gap here, and the guy behind you is on your ass and overtakes to get into the gap you're leaving 🤦♂️
Good, then he won't be tailgating you anymore and creating a dangerous situation, while you only get to your destination .1 seconds later than if he hadn't passed you.
Where are you getting 2 seconds? The recommended is 3
Obviously the cop doing a sudden turn like that is at fault, but I don't think it's a good first instinct to try to pass a car over double yellow when it suddenly starts doing something unexpected. Your first reaction to something strange happening in front of you should always be to slow down. Not necessarily stop, but at least moderately press on the brakes, it will also act as a signal to start paying attention for everyone behind you.
The fact that he tried to cross a double solid instead of slowing down is damning
I agree, there is no harm in keeping a good bit of distance and if something unexpected starts happening, slow down even more.
Had to scroll TOO far down to find the right take...kudos
a slight forward tilt seems to start pretty early on. just because brakes exist doesn't magically make your car stop instantly.
Nah this is the cops fault, I don’t care what any of y’all say
No one is saying otherwise.
Bros fighting his own demons
The whole comment chain above this disagrees...
Am I the only one suprised the cam driver isnt braking or way too weak and late? wtf
Guess the dude in the Porsche isn’t getting a ticket today
could you imagine seeing that in your rearview mirror? i'd probably mash the gas lmao
Tbf you should always be able to stop if someone suddenly stops in front of you.
He clearly expected the cop to pull over and moved over to the middle of the road to give the cop space as he passed him
He shouldn't cross double yellow lines.
You shouldn't *pass* on double yellow lines. People cross them to avoid shoulder hazards all the time. Thousands, probably millions of times a day.
i truly wonder if everyone is at fault here. the cop for doing a dangerous maneuver, the car with the camera not following from a safe distance, and the pickup with the boat for again now following at a safe distance ( and probably not driving at a safe speed with heavy load) please no hate I'm just curious

The cops actions can be interpreted as: 1. pulling over 2. changes mind 3. wildly endangers everyone on the road by turning in the opposite direction 4. turns straight into another car, this is a serious violation as he does not have control of his own vehicle, is not aware of his surroundings, and is now going all over all sorts of lines 5. illegal U turn in the middle of the road after changing mind without even looking at traffic coming from EITHER direction You have to go with what actually happened, not with what was in the cop's very small, crime-causing brain.
The only lucky driver was the one the cop was about to chase down.
Driver is at fault. You see the blue light and still driving after him without any caution.
