*One in three players who took part in this year's World Cup still earn less than $30,000 a year from football, while one in five needs to work second jobs in order to make ends meet.*
I mean is this a shock? It’s well known that a lot of women’s leagues around the world aren’t highly funded. In terms of the fixture congestion, isn’t this the case for the men’s leagues/WC as well?
Surely it’s the players choice to play for their club so soon after the tournament, or am I missing something?
It’s from an iconic aussie song/poem called ‘Waltzing Matilda’. They used to be referred to as the ‘Female Socceroos’ but obviously that’s not a great name, so there was a public vote with a few name options and ‘Matildas’ was the winner.
I know that song even though I'm American and grew up in America. We sang it all the time in elementary school. We also sang the Kookaburra song though I don't know if that's Australian.
Fun fact: Kookaburra was the subject of a huge lawsuit between the copyright owners and rock band Men at Work

Let’s be honest, no one is shocked by low salaries of women’s soccer stars. Saddened? Sure. Shocked? Nope.

I think that actually shows a pretty good development. 10, 20 years ago the majority would have been on salaries like that, no?
Sure, or potentially unpaid completely. It’s progress but it’s still disappointing.
that figure is combined club and national salaries

Why are they called Matilda’s?

“Female Socceroos” would be a great name for a punk rock album though.

Named after ‘Waltzing Matilda’, a very famous Australian bush song, kind of the country's unofficial national anthem.
