These kinda statements always make me wonder what the dividing line for future generations will be. Like for my parents computers/connectivity is the line that separates their youth from mine. What will my kids think is the dividing line between them and me?

UhDeMix

I guess we'll have to see what the future holds to truly find out.

DaylanDaylan

My guess is the difference will be people in our generation that “prefer old school tech” over the new meta verse, VR and AR tech that will start to take over

UhDeMix

Never tried VR but it looks like a lot of fun. But there's something magical about growing up with a Super Nintendo and Gameboy and blowing out cartridges because sometimes they wouldn't load. I have an old school heart and origin. Haha.

DaylanDaylan

Totally, IMO I think there will always be respect for the retro-vibes! I’m learning to program on a “fantasy console” right now which kinda replicates something a bit after the NES, super cool stuff! It’s called PICO-8, I love that sort of ode to the classics/simpler times but still very engaging

UhDeMix

That was my SNES gaming experience. I remember this game like yesterday. That intro gives me chills. Looking back on this and playing a game like Elden Ring really gives you some perspective on how far graphical improvements and hardware have come. darthbane97

what ages me is the fact the kids today don't really use vhs tapes, and have never used a CRT TV. I legit have a quite vivid memory of my mom buying me a vhs tape of the land before time at Walmart. Walmart don't even have vhs tapes anymore and they're even slowly phasing out DVDs

[deleted]

I had a VHS tape of “ThunderBirds” which I absolutely loved. My grandma used to have a super rewinder too which was elite.

darthbane97

never even heard of a super rewinder, but that's super cool

UhDeMix

Or monitor with floppy disc drives. I used to watch Home Alone, Gremlins, and Ernest often on VHS.

darthbane97

yeah, I remember when my vcr broke I was trying to watch Spider-Man(2002) and I was so sad I didn't get to watch Spider-Man that day :( I got the DVD years later because I remember my parents didn't get a DVD player for a while, but they got me a ps2 for my 8th birthday party, without realizing the ps2 could also play movies, so I ended up getting a game console and DVD player in one that day

UhDeMix

Life back in the day felt like a damn fantasy land as a kid. I wish I was born around 90-92 bare minimum so I could've had the majority of my childhood then to be honest. I really prefer it to nowadays. Now everybody is taking pictures of their food like wtf?

darthbane97

yeah i agree, the 90s seemed like such a magical time to be a child i feel like social media is the fantasy land now, people make there life look like it's perfect on there, but its all smoke and mirrors

of_patrol_bot

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

kidfrom15

Fucking hell. There will be high school graduates next year who were never alive in a time where there wasn’t YouTube.

UhDeMix

Jeez...

[deleted]

A shame ain't it

UhDeMix

It really is, gives you much needed perspective. But I guess they'll have their moment eventually of 'kids nowadays don't know...'

[deleted]

Kids nowadays would have very vague or no memories of Obama.

TrueMLGPlayer_69

Lol, I remember the day of his election and hype over it. And now it's a part of history already.

firebird7802

I remember my mom telling me he got elected, and everyone talking about in in school after winter break. I was 6 then, I just turned 20 today. I remember his entire presidency.

TrueMLGPlayer_69

Oh, congrats with Birthday then. :)

I-scream-to-smile

I barely remember significant cultural events before YouTube to be honest. I do vividly remember what life was like before everyone owned a smartphone but that doesn’t make me feel old since everyone started adopting them fast when I was still in middle school You guys seem to fetishize being old lol

UhDeMix

Not neccesarily about age, about how fast times change. It's terrifying bit gives you much needed perspective about your finite existence.

I-scream-to-smile

We've grown up with rapid change in culture and technology, we've never known a perpetually lasting culture without fast change. That's the beauty of the 21st century, everything grows and grows, it's irrelevant to your mortality I mean you're comparing your youth to literal middle schoolers, in 5 years they'll say the same thing how they once knew a life before fortnite became huge as if it's a legitimate testament to how ancient they are when big changes happen every few years anyways

UhDeMix

I understand what you're saying there's just a disconnect here. I'm looking through a philosophical lens, not a reality one. And yes, every generation will have those moments - it's only natural.

tragedywillfindus99

None of these youngins know the pain of basically having to rewatch a movie backwards while rewinding a VCR while also having to stand there to wait for it to finish

UhDeMix

Gremlins and Home Alone were probably my favorite films on VHS. Good times.
