There are 24 named aces who require you to meet certain conditions to spawn spread out throughout the game. Killing them gives you a special skin for that ace's aircraft of choice. In this case, it's the MiG-29.
I remember how one of the pilots of those jets took out a cig and started smoking after ejecting when the other pilot collided with his mig. https://youtu.be/fFu1oV_31B4?si=LA444ZsQs9JXiXMU
And they're a real treat to fight, too. Not quite drones from 7 levels of bs ability to do quite literally impossible maneuvers that would break the aircraft in half, but their dogfighting knowledge is top tier. You'll have a heck of a time getting out of their lock and getting them into yours
Yeah their spawns can be weird, but unless you spot em during their takeoff/initiation (before their AI has you as the target and you have an EM rail gun lined up to spawn-kill them) it'll be a fun dogfight, which can't always be said of the targets you're usually picking off
My first ace that I fought against that pulled the pull-flap and dive-turn maneuver, which let me know that it was possible, made me re-evaluate my 3d perception of the battlefield and my ability to move about it. Then I practiced for about 10 hours on how to actually make my plane do it as well because I couldn't match it, learned the inputs for it, and then put it into my arsenal
I'm salty that the in-game flight ceiling doesn't match the real altitude limits for the planes. No matter what plane you're in you'll stall out around 35000-38000 feet... the F-16, your STARTER PLANE, has a ceiling of 50,000. I should be able to chase those missiles longer, damn it.
You shot down Joe “Jester” Barker. On a second play-through (on normal difficulty or higher), enemy aces spawn.
You get this one by destroying the control tower before the drones launch.
You then mercilessly shot him as he immediately came out of the hanger, following the cutscene.
Yeah, I don't know what's up with making ACES which are literal top tier pilots who have shot down multiple of our own just normal enemies with nametag and brighter colours.
Trepang² does something similar and I can't stand it.
If there's an HVT it better be a God-damned miniboss once I fight it.
And some of them spawn out in bum fuck nowhere just to book it out of bounds so you have to spend an eternity straight-lining it there and back, only firing two missiles in between. And the conditions to get them to spawn aren't mentioned anywhere in game as far as I know so you have to look up a guide to do it, further adding to the "yeah whatever it's just a skin" factor.
I wish they would spawn and actually meaningfully try to fuck your shit up like the aces they're meant to be.
In assault records you can get hints on how to spawn them in.
Also some aces AI (not all unfortunately, most are cowards) will lock on and target the player as soon as they spawn in and will make their way forwards the player. Gadfly and Spider are the first that come to mind.
Nope, I have been playing the game since release and i did have to switch accounts at some point before I could finish the story (about mission 9 a had to switch) so the story I finished recently is think took 2 years and I somehow still have under 30 hours.
And this is the first time I've ever seen a named ace
Well, There's about 24 of them, if I remember correctly. You have to meet certain conditions to cause them to spawn and take them down before they exit the combat zone to get their plane skins. I have about 10 as it currently stands.

Odd since he flies an a4
Woo hoo, Jester's dead
Jester's dead, Yee HAW!
Great balls of fire!
Yeah I believe he unlocks the yellow Mig
IRL it was the livery for the two 29As in the aerobatics team from the Gromov Flying Research Institute

Jester spawns on the ground, so hes quite easy to kill. Some aces can be found just running away or flying aimlessly into battle

Well... Looks like I'll have to stop spawn killing jester in my next play through
Oh on the complete opposite side of the map from your current, time sensitive objective

Aces are usually hard-ish to take down, yeah
Jester's dead! Whoohoo!
Get your butts above the hard deck and return to base immediately.
I WANT SOME BUTTS
Damn it! That's twice!
Well that'll just about cover the fly-bys.
I said to Hollywood, “Where’d he go?!” Hollywood said, “Where’d who go?!”
Jester: Ummm no, you’re dead. You busted the hard deck 5 minutes ago

How did you know that I mercilessly shot him down? Even worse: i used the a-10, ended his whole career
Because that's the way we all did, show no mercy to any named target!
Because that’s how we all took out Jester
Making it Normal is kinda weak sauce tbh. Make Aces appear on Ace only again
that's how it's always been since the PS2 era though. Aces always appeared on normal difficulty or above on NG+ playthroughs
At least they would actually fight like people with more than 2 minutes of flight time though.
4 was pretty easy to kill aces, Zero was the hardest. In fact I think Zero is the hardest Game in general
Zero has some real bullshit in it lol
I guess thats what i get for always starting on normal & skipping straight to Hard & ACE like some crazed lunatic
Jesters dead? Who's gonna switch to PSTT and loose lock now?
I got the reference!!!!
I didn't, help pls
Jester is the name of your RIO on the DCS F-14 And soon WSO of the F-4E
Oooh, I never played DCS, tried getting it from steam but my crack laptop can't handle it
Ach yeah, not all laptop can endle it! I hope one day you will discover this game!
Jester was the call sign name of one of the senior instructors in the original Top Gun movie
I know that but apparently it was a DCS reference. Top gun is one of my favorite movies of all time
And who's going to laugh at me for dropping the tomcat onto the deck
Unable
Literally feel the same way about the aces. Just a colorful target that gives more points

Hopefully they become harder in 8
It was me. Awfully aggressive of you to do, but I get it.
Oh damn, sorry dude i didn't realize you were chill like that
You okay, man?
I think Jester had a rough day at the office
Depends on if that plane was insured or not, I suppose. hahaha
Just wait until you face The Jonkeler 😈
[the. W H A T ?](https://images.app.goo.gl/zoF5fWkkMaGXoBH4A)
You’re lost lmao
Kill Jester.

J E S T E R
Bagged your first Fulcrum, hell yeah
From Ace Combat fan, he spawns on the runway and you can’t miss him, he’s bright yellow
Each mission has one named Ace with a unique skin. If you kill him you unlock said skin.
thats quite the jest. its one of the ACES that random spaw.
EJECT EJECT EJECT
Oh man what is the Mighty Nine gonna do now?
