You didn't have to listen to it. There were AT codes to turn off the speaker. I think the speaker was mainly for troubleshooting, when the line might have been busy or you got the wrong number.
Its not nonsense. The lines are sending specific instructions to each other, so that the receiving and sending line know each others specification. The massive all out noise you hear, is it saying "Listen, this is my capacity ... TTTRSTSSCCFFCS FCSSSFCFF"
I love that there are old school engineers on here who know what each tone is for! Hold the torch high boys and girls! You have lit the path for us all!
Same. I was a pre-teen when my family first got dial up internet, and this is one of those sound memories that's so visceral even just mentioning it conjures the sound in my brain.
Wikipedia has this nice diagram describing the stages and contents of the conversation that the two modems are having during dial-up: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dial_up_modem_noises_explained_final.png
Officially this process is called a "handshake", because it's two modems "greeting" each other. I called it a "conversation" because they are using what are essentially voice frequencies to communicate with each other, much like what humans do when they use telephone lines.
Weird question but how do I decorate my house like this?
Download all the internet and put it in a 3D printer
To me as someone who grew up needing to use this type of Internet, it's wild that the computer forced us to hear this nonsense every time
But it was oddly pleasing every time
It was the dopamine anticipation, your/our brain was already releasing it.

True. It was always funny when someone was on the line because you would hear talking on the computer be interrupted by this madness of squeels
`ATM0` I liked the defaultra `ATM1` because after a while you could diagnose connections issues or know your connection speed just by listening.

BEE-EERRR-EEE-EERRR-EEEE

Had my sound off but I could still hear this.

I desire the forbidden rainbow frosting
Ooo frosting. Mmm snacks
I'm totally saving this for "later"
So did I and I'm watching it over and over again
Might as well enjoy it now because you'll forget it exists later.
As slow as those connections were, it was still impressive for just using voice-frequencies on a network not made for data at all.
And modern DOCSIS (cable internet, like from Comcast) is still laid over analog frequencies over copper.

I wanted to sleep, now I have to study this
Oh my gosh that's why they call it a conversation! I thought it was a phrase of speech. My mind is blown that's so cool.

It's beautiful.
All I can think about is how much it would cut my feet if I stepped on it. I don't want that, but it's in my head regardless
“Hello! You’ve got mail!”
Thank you for sharing, this has truly enriched my life and I am not even joking!
It's amazing!!!
Verifying user name and password. Logging into network.
Damn you. You and the Pi guy killing my productivity 😵💫🤣
You're welcome. Become a master and don't even get productive, you can't kill what isn't there!
it’s the machine spirit talking
That gave me good tingles
Oh yeah!
I could hear this watching it with the video muted
I love this and i love the noise it makes, istg my brain does the exact same thing sometimes lmfao
Yes, the sound starting at 5 seconds, sometimes when I only fall half asleep
You're as beautiful as the day I lost you.
Everything about this makes me uncomfortable
I did not grow up with this but I love it so much :)
Istg this is the exact sound (almost like an earworm) that plays in my head when I’m spending a lot of time comprehending something
Weird question. How can i be in this? Like i want to feel this on my body. Like I want to be that sifter thing on the back
Can someone tell me what frequency the bears at the 25 second through 27sexonds
Maybe you can find it here, other user commented this above https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dial_up_modem_noises_explained_final.png
Oh how I have missed this sound, 1993…take me back.
Why is chaos so peaceful???
