I find out what plane I'm on when I book and look at the seat map to pick my seat. In the end these days, they're all just different versions of Greyhound buses that fly.

rfjordan

The honest answer here is you’re one of like 15 total people that give a shit.

2cb6

So...? All I care about is comfort and safe, 321T and 321neo are the best

MrBenedick

I understand the general sentiment - although the A321 transcon American operates on NY-LA is more unique than the UA/DL wide-bodies

eelynek

But that unique configuration is going away 😭

EJR994

They’re being replaced with the A321 XLRs with the new flagship suites though. If anything, it’ll be an improvement minus no first class.

Bloc_Party43

Maybe but if you’ve ever flown a CRJ145 while hungover it’s a real treat to watch overpacked white women jam things into the glove box sized overhead bins while stale warm air gently caresses your face. Live a little!

Yes, the state of AA's fleet is truly horrible. Who cares about improving on-time performance? Why bother getting upset about pay off flight crew? What about lack of reliability? Too many canceled flights? Naeh, the fleet needs to be more diverse! Why focus on a few types of planes if you can split your pilots into even more type ratings? Seriously, with as many issues as AA has, a less streamlined fleet wild probably sink them. I rarely align with the views of AA top management, but getting rid of that old iron was the right choice. So is not losing more money and focusing their wide bodies on the routes that make money

zeneker

Would it sink it or the diversity to help avoid widespread manufacturer defects, or manufacturers unable to deliver planes on time? AA is still waiting on 789 and 321xlr. That 737 max 10 order is NEVER going to happen at this point. What happens now? Flying ancient 737 ngs that are starting to need a lot more down time and breaking down. Running planes into the ground because they don't have anything else. The 777s are in constant use. The 777 can't even get refurbished because there's nothing to replace them. AA is handicapped with expansion (particularly internationally) because they can't get new planes. AA could have gotten plenty of a350s by now thanks to us air's early order as well as plenty of a321. In the homogeneous mindset, AA should retire all Airbus aircraft and be Boeing only. Diversity in suppliers is an asset when used properly

tag4424

You have a good point here about the Boeing delivery issue, but I'll only respond to the last statemen: Do you trust aa top management to do anything properly? That's where it all falls apart...

zeneker

I agree with you completely. I've questioned AA choice to use the a321xlr transcontinental, it's overkill. The whole point of getting rid of the 321T was to eliminate at subfleet. Adding in the 321xlr... Creates a sub fleet. I'd rather dedicate those planes to European expansion which would actually use it's range. AA has the mindset of a ULCC while being a flag carrier. Those two don't match well.

EJR994

The 321xlrs will be used for some transatlantic flights though. Mostly out of ORD, JFK, and PHL during off season when larger 787/777 wouldn’t be economical. If anything, it’s going to allow AA to start and sustain these routes more.

zeneker

That's what they should be used for not jfk to lax/SFO. Range overkill at that point

Icy_Huckleberry_8049

AA got rid of their 757 & 767 fleets. There was no use keeping them with 737's and A321's being delivered weekly. 737 & A321 are more fuel efficient than the 767 or 757 that they replaced. 717 is an old plane as is the 757 & 767.

YMMV25

They’re welcome to dump as many 737s as they’d like in favor of… anything else (well, except the CR1/2). Hate those things and everything about them.

weatherinfo

I agree. AA has the least variety in their fleet out of all 3 majors. At least it’s not WN or NK with one-plane fleets

Gusearth

lol i thought i was the only one who did this. if there isn’t too big of a price difference i’ll always try to find those 757 or domestic widebody flights whenever possible, especially since the 757/767’s are probably all getting retired in the near future

Training-Material155

Dude if this is what you’re thinking about you have way too much free time.

OAreaMan

What I miss most about the 757 is turning *left* at the door and not getting bumped by everyone else boarding.

aggiepino

Haaaaaaaave you met the AA 777s or 787s…? lol

RyanAirhead

I used to fly on Delta 757s and 767s and realized I hated those planes. I would always get off the plane feeling tired, deaf, and gross. The narrow body A321Ts that American uses to fly between LAX and JFK have become one of my favorites since I've only ever had lie-flats on the front half of the plane and sometimes am lucky to be able to be able to fly Flagship First without the possibility of a neighbor next to me. Those planes are showing their age a bit though (for American's standard), and while I'm glad they will be replaced by the new Flagship Business product, I will miss having a dedicated Flagship First. Then again, at the end of the day they are just buses in the sky, so I don't really care that much

Speedbird223

Showing their age? They’re barely 10yrs old…

RyanAirhead

Yeah the Flagship First seats oftentimes don't work well. The IFE's are small and slow and also often don't work well. You can tell many of the seats have been used a lot. To be fair the planes themselves are still in good condition and that's why they are being converted to the normal fleet configuration so they would look new again. I feel like the new Flagship Business products on the XLR's will stand up better over time, fingers crossed

Daddyg2019

The 717, 757, and 767, are all aircraft that are "long in the tooth." Don't expect to see them for much longer. All the airlines are looking to consolidate and standardize their fleets to the models that make the most economic sense.

adjust_your_set

Yeah, but they have the youngest fleet (right now) and fleet simplicity means the operation runs better.

EJR994

How is that a bad thing? It means you’re know what you’re getting more or less with cabin layout. 777/787 are great planes as well. Also, I love the E-175s used for regional jets.
