mr_beanoz

Seems like shonen series are a hard sell with shows like Mashle hardly reaching 1000 copies on first week, and Yozakura not even reaching 200. You'll have to make a series with massive cultural effect like Jujutsu or Demon Slayer if you wanna have your shonen series sell more than 10k on the first week for each volume. I feel like Red Cat Ramen would get the numbers of Yozakura, or even less.

L_0ken

100gf is marked as a seinen series actually, it published in Young Jump. Also volume 3 having printing defect did had impact on sales, since vol.4 sold 300 more then previous one.

mr_beanoz

My bad.

Ebo87

At this point they'd be happy with anything in the 2 to 5k range, 5k to 10k range is already the domain of super hits, and anything past that is just unreal. Of course price of box also matters, some of these retail for 50 bucks, others are over 100, so that is another thing we have to keep in mind when looking at overall sales.

brzzcode

100GF isnt shonen, use google man lol

steven4869

Yuru Camp sold greatly as well, another season when?

Mitsuyan_

Yuru Camp did really well for what it is, but has now caught up to the manga. Aquors 9 didn't announce an anime of the crossover Aquors have done with Yuru Camp so I think we'll be waiting for a while.

gangrainette

> Yuru Camp did really well for what it is, but has now caught up to the manga. They should just adapt Homura Tamura from the same author. It would work perfectly with the next Madoka movie comming soon.

_Mayama_

Mono anime [was announced](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1bk8lfi/mono_anime_announced_teaser_visual/) a few months ago, also from afro.

stevethebandit

Probably gonna be another 3 years between seasons, maybe another spinoff like Heya Camp or the movie in the meantime

MasterTotoro

If we continue the season every 3 years trend, then 2027. I suspect the manga won't have enough material for another season until 2026 so it honestly makes some sense. We are getting Mono adapted though (another work from the author), and we probably would get some anime original content since there has been quite a lot for the series already between OVAs, the movie, and in the main show itself.

qef15

I hate to be that guy, but the following has to be said: 3,570, as high as that sounds, isn't enough by Manga Time Kirara standards for another season, unfortunately. Unless Houbunsha stops using 5500 BD's (Kirara line) as a benchmark, we ain't getting S4 (GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class and A-Channel both sold around the 5K mark, but never got another season). And thus, Hidamari Sketch remains as the only Kirara anime with 4 seasons. Unless GochiUsa somehow gets a new season. S3 sold well enough for another season, but the VA of a major side character died IRL and that seems to put a stop on it. Hidamari Sketch also never got another season past S4, despite selling well above the Kirara line. I could be proven wrong though if they manage keep the trend of every 3 years a new season going and if Houbunsha stops being archaic.

cutiecheese

None of the series you mentioned tied to the local economy to the degree Yurucamp does though.

qef15

Probably, but Houbunsha at the end of the day holds the cards, since they are the publishers of the original material. Also depends if that local economy (most likely the Yamanashi prefecture tourism board) is either paying Houbunsha or if they are footing the bill (in multiple ways, can be with merch sold at various campsites, can be with hard cash).

Sandtalon

> 5500 BD's (Kirara line) as a benchmark Do you have a source for this?

This is why. Comic Girls at the time of airing also was decently popular here and also never got a new season. This also explains how Hidamari Sketch was able to get a whopping 4 seasons (total amount of episodes more than Aria, because of OVA's), GochiUsa managing to get 3 seasons and Yuru Camp also having 3 seasons. Though you may notice GochiUsa S3 and Hidamari Sketch S4 not having another season, that's most likely because the VA's died IRL (VA's of both Yoshinoya sensei and Tippy are actually IRL dead).

Sandtalon

Given that BD sales in general have been declining in importance for many years, I do wonder how relevant that number is now or will be going forward...

qef15

Every single Kirara adaptation as of today is slice of life and that is a niche genre. It's also one of the genres that has stayed in Japan in general and only few slice of life make it to the west with enough popularity. Everyone keeps saying that overseas and streaming is the future, but I have yet to see the first one for slice of life and the second doesn't have the largest impact. Especially overseas (west), where slice of life just doesn't catch on most of the time (with only few exceptions). This leaves slice of life anime with merch (including collabs) and BD sales most of the times. Most slice of life are geared towards (young) adults. Those are able to bankroll new seasons (lots of disposable income) and this is how slice of life have a small, but very dedicated fanbase. BD's have a massive margin and are true rich-people products.

AnEmpireofRubble

not enough to put the amount of time they did into that comment lol

qef15

I just pulled this up from my own document I have where I track BD sales per season (copy pasting from 5chan usually), so that comment was 5 minutes of work. But you may forget the fact that slice of life is stupidly niche in the west (with exceptions) and that in Japan as well, are not strong enough to just rely on streaming.

CosmicPenguin_OV103

Yeah EP12, [but the only place where I have seen anything that can be described as a real controversy for the ending (plus little things throughout the season), not just some people disagreeing, is China](https://www.reddit.com/r/HibikeEuphonium/comments/1ds7rcc/comment/lb32xyv/)...which very unfortunately turns into a complete rating disintegration for some reason.

They changed episode 12 ?

Sandtalon

Nah, there was definitely some controversy. Granted, I haven't looked for it myself, but I've seen friends of mine [comment on](https://x.com/RabbitHouse_/status/1805576893615555013) and retweet commentary [referring](https://x.com/indigobird0421/status/1805583929816269213) to some amount of controversy

darkmacgf

It's not a controversy just because some people don't like it.

IXajll

No way Toei doesn’t go ahead with that S2 now. For today’s standards that’s pretty damn good, even considering it’s a cheaper than normal volume.

susgnome

[Toei](#katoupls) [They're streaming right now.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D26ItteCWBI) And as soon as I joined, the first thing I hear from them is "***SEASON 2!!***" [](#excitedmao) [They were talking about something else](#frustration)

ExpiredMilknCheese

How cheap is it?

MyMan_290484

Like $30 USD for the deluxe edition. Others go for like $100-$150 range, so it’s incredibly cheap.

ExpiredMilknCheese

Oh wow yeah that’s very cheap

IXajll

It’s literally only the 1st episode though so it makes sense. The 13 eps are getting split up into 7 volumes and the others have 2 eps each and will be more expensive comparatively. If the sales stay this high for the rest of the volumes, they gonna make quite a lot of money.

Muted-Conference2900

13 episodes into 7 Volumes. Don't know what Toei is planning with this.

IXajll

Making some dough probably.

Muted-Conference2900

Yeah I am not complaining as long as that dough is used for season 2.

gvon89

They gotta afford keeping one piece's quality as high as possible, especially since according to manga readers saying the hype train is about to began and there's no brakes on it either.

DegenerateSock

Pretty sure One Piece pays for itself.

Kaxew

That seems fairly standard from my knowledge lol

ExpiredMilknCheese

Still even for a one episode $30 is very cheap

KloppersToppers

Within context of anime blu-rays of course.

Abysswatcherbel

I am not at home, but there's a lot of misinformation going on here, the price for GBC is not cheap at all, it's closer to the higher end of price per episode Unfortunately again, I can't update my sheet right now, [but here's some recent prices and breakdown](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1dxwl7jIQOq7OCBruEe7BzLsgLQE1n0S_b3nmHpUcSVU) Vol 2 of GBC will go for 8,800, because it has 2 episodes instead of one, which will make it 4,400 per ep, which would put it on top of my list as the most expensive show per episode

Muted-Conference2900

I am just happy for Oblivion Battery. Pretty good start also i think the numbers will rise with later episodes. Now I will wait for Mappa to Announce a season 2 today.

CosmicPenguin_OV103

One of probably my biggest misses for the Spring season (still struggling to even understand baseball rules and I haven’t heard people praising the manga) based on reviews that I have seen, time to put it in my PTW list!

Waylornic

I was just kind of watching it to pass the time, but the animation and the story telling in a couple episodes fully sold me. Like, okay, if you’re gonna pull things off like THAT every once in a while, I’ll stick around.

oops_i_made_a_typi

yeah based on post-season comments i think Yatagarasu and Oblivion Battery are two to add to my PTW. hopefully Summer is as quiet as I think it will be

CosmicPenguin_OV103

The 4 that I missed following in season that has been or likely to be added to the PTW are Oblivion Battery, Salad Bowl (added already), Yatagarasu and Tonbo! (waiting for them to be completed this year before making the final call).

oops_i_made_a_typi

Salad Bowl and VA Radio were my two successful mid-season pickups I had, though Whisper got dropped after the first bit of production issues. Jellyfish, GBC, and Train have been all decent to great end-of-season binges in the quiet week too.

iamfroott

I dropped VA Radio because it felt like such a whine fest and a drama fest that it got hard to watch for me. did it get any better or is it still kinda like it was mid season?

oops_i_made_a_typi

i mean i don't share your opinion so hard to say. what makes a show a "drama fest" vs a regular drama?

dododomo

Same! Seems it was more popular in Japan than on this sub. I'm happy that it did well and sold even more than some shows that were quite popular here, like jellyfish, etc. Now, I need a season 2!🙏

fph03n1x

It was unlicensed... so, none of the streaming services had it. Only those who sailed the sea for it managed to watch it (: Else, this anime would've been a consecutive top 3

Muted-Conference2900

I think u are confusing Oblivion Battery with Girls Band Cry here. The Guy which u replied to was talking about Oblivion Battery.

fph03n1x

seems like i indeed am...

zz2000

I don't understand how this series did not get an official licence for Western audiences. Which side caused this to happen?

TheKiwiHuman

I uploaded Girls Band Cry to reddit on r/Reddit_Sized_Chunks

Thrasher439

Lottery entry codes are so powerful. Buying up all the duplicate copies just to get a chance at buying a ticket to a concert.

RobotiSC

Wow, that comes quite close to how much Bocchi Vol 1 sold in its first week ([16,793 copies](https://x.com/Nakayasee/status/1611181495187644418)). It'll probably shoot up too with subsequent volumes, not bad at all.

CommanderZx2

You do need to keep the price in mind with these numbers. Girls Band Cry vol. 1 BD deluxe release is $30. Bocchi BD vol. 1 limited edition was $47. That's 36% difference in price per volume.

Ebo87

Yep, people often forget some of these BD boxes can vary in price from as low as 30 to as much as 200 bucks in some rare cases. So just looking at the numbers sold is not even half the story. For example the latest JJK and Frieren volumes had something like just shy of 10k (BD+DVD) versus maybe 6700 or so for the weird elf, but JJK volumes also retailed for half as much with 3 cursed episodes per volume versus 4 in the case of the racist elf. So in essence Dungeon Meshi made more or less about as much money from its new volume as Girls Band Cry made here, despite selling 4 times fewer copies. And that's because that volume retailed for 4 times as much money.

Zagily

I read in this thread it’s only one episode though, does it mean it’s expensive or cheap?

Ebo87

Very cheap (at least for Japan blu-rays), like I said, it's 30 bucks, 1/4 of what Dungeon Meshi is. But the cost for the total 13 episodes will be through the roof at the end of the season.

qef15

Has to be said that Bocchi did something insane and kept selling well **past week 1 and week 5 sold 2698 copies**. This is a feat that rarely happens, most anime are week 1-heavy. Also, Girls Band Cry costs 4950 JPY and Bocchi costs 7700 JPY, with both having similar amounts of volumes (7 for GBC and 6 for Bocchi).

Abysswatcherbel

The Next 6 volumes of GBC are going to be 8,800. The first one is cheaper because it only has 1 episode

domogrue

I heard the whole Bang Dream! franchise is also a big hit in Japan. Looks like that the market is keen on **Cute Girls Doing Rock Things**, plus the whole fact that these projects are turning into multimedia efforts (meaning that merch etc. is a big avenue for sales) means that we will probably see more of this down the line.

Abysswatcherbel

Less about turning and more that they are planned as multimedia projects to begin with

AnEmpireofRubble

it was 4,000 less at a cheaper price. also, Blu Ray doesn't tell enough these days.

MapoTofuMan

Wow, even better than the predictions, I've seen people estimate anywhere from 6-9k. ^(Though the real success metric should be) [^(Nina that looks at you like trash)](https://i0.wp.com/anitrendz.net/news/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/girlsbandcry_ninafigure-e1716395252675.jpeg?resize=696%2C393&ssl=1) ^(sales)

Still not sure why this didn’t get a picked up by Crunchyroll etc.

I wonder there is any other CGI TV anime that sold more copies. This outsells Arpeggio of Blue Steel, Land of the Lustrous or Knights of Sidonia, all of them were from the era when the market of physical discs was much bigger.

ErebosGR

It only sold well because of the lottery tickets.

deserved it, truly deserved it, i'm so happy about them, this was a big bet and brings me hope for a 2nd season, but even without one, this show really deserved it to be successful

pester41

Aside from the other comment, it's also available in Korea and soon, Thailand.

In France and Indonesia.

Fluffychimichanga

Feels like this show changed public perception of 3d anime for the better

Figerally

GBC hasn't gotten a proper English release so it is kind of amazing how well it was received by English viewers. I hope Toei put out a proper sub and if they do season two that a Western streaming service will pick it up.

Well that's encouraging!

Girls Band Cry is my AOTS and I was never expecting it to be. And the best full cgi anime I've seen. It's that good. Well deserved sales imo.

No_Possible_7095

CGDCT has always dominated Blu-ray sales.

steven4869

Massive massive numbers, majority of the anime doesn't sell this high in current standards though it's at a discounted price compared to other but still quite big for any anime.

ConversationProof505

That's a great start.

charredchord

Still baffled that this never got picked up by streaming services. Who knows what numbers it could do if it did.

BK456

Should force myself to watch this with all the hype. See if I can come around on it. The premise itself is up my alley but I've not really enjoyed the visuals from the clips that people have posted. The animation and expressiveness of the characters has been very impressive. I just haven't found myself liking the overall look of the show regardless.

VTuberFadeaway

that's actually fucking insane. 12k? are we back in 2014 or something?

CosmicPenguin_OV103

I do wonder if Toei’s (and maybe Universal Music’s who signs the real life band members) higher-ups understand what that really means, given that’s probably a drop in the bucket for them and, well, the strange way how GBC is being advertised. (There are more peculiar things than just slow licensing of anime worldwide. Like, their Bleeding Hearts MV last year somehow ends up with 2 million visits on YouTube in just 2 weeks when others are at 60000, did Toei get the views from some other “methods”?) Can we really trust them for an anime sequel to happen?

Mitsuyan_

> given that’s probably a drop in the bucket for them ~$360,000 income from these BDs (12,000 x $30) is indeed a drop in the bucket for Toei.  With the BDs and merch you'd expect it to make a profit. With the nature of how TogeToge came to be I imagine this was a *very* expensive project (still negligible expense for Toei) and will take a whole to show a profit.  > Can we really trust them for an anime sequel to happen?  I'd be betting on a VN next. With the franchise established I would bet on a VN, especially with DLC, to be a better money spinner than a season 2.

pgr_fan

It's not from BD alone. Its mix of DVD and BD. Their merch sold out faster than my eyes can keep.

Did a band/band-like franchise ever make a VN instead of or even in addition to a gacha game? I'm pretty sure gacha would be a much safer bet if you already have a strong audience. Way easier entry bar for the players (VNs are more niche as a medium), and way easier to get money from those who want to spend big.

Abysswatcherbel

Don't know if OP meant that, but 90% of the gacha plots are in VN format, so technically they could do a gacha but the story progress would be in a VN format ~~with alt routes as event bonuses so we can make Nina x Hina real~~

gangrainette

>~~with alt routes as event bonuses so we can make Nina x Hina real~~ The Symphogear gacha did that to give us Chris X Tsubasa. Well, we also got Chris X moon Hitler shota clone.

MapoTofuMan

X WHA- ah right, Symphogear.

gangrainette

Well, as you know the Nazi ran away to the far side of the moon. There they cloned Hitler to be their new Furher. But this clone still a child (and not a bad guy) escaped and met Chris and they became friend. Then someone on Pixiv made it into a ship with quite a lot of fanart.

Gamerunglued

Revue Starlight is literally doing that right now, a visual novel sequel to the movie (god only knows how/if it ties to the gacha game) releases this August.

lenne18

Music-related gacha games aren't very feasible rn, mostly because it will be competing with ProSekai, which is massively popular

rscape5910

honestly i would buy the crap out of a vn for gbc if it gets translated or i can dl a translated patch for it. that actually sounds really fun if the script writer is the same.

MapoTofuMan

Bleeding Hearts was used as an ad that popped up on YouTube from what I heard, and somehow that counted towards the views. It went up to 10-11M before it stopped. Can never be sure about an anime sequel, but I think this is a 99.9% sure sign of the franchise continuing in some way at least, even if they were originally planning to make it as an ad for the band.

Trobis

Haven't seen the show, i heard its yuri, is it true?

Ritchuck

So far it's vague. There is definitely a canon ship but S1 didn't make it official.

Let's just say that it's pretty clear both characters love each other, but it's up in the air if it's romantic. I won't speculate on the reasons but this season wasn't a romance, so it's understandable why it wasn't the focus.

zadcap

No, not unless you want to read a lot into some friendships.

Webknight31

Another big hit for Toei at this point season 2 should be locked in.

Adventurous-Exit5832

Nijiyon sold 7,998 copies in its first week... Wtf theres like 12 episode of 3 mins why does it sold that much?

mr_beanoz

lottery tickets for Nijigasaki 7th live and 3 extra unaired episodes

Ayam__goreng

Is this normal? I am too used to see kpop albums selling in millions

mr_beanoz

Can't really compare music CD and TV shows...

EGLLRJTT24

Very different mediums. Buying anime (or anything really) on DVD or Blu-ray is usually only done by more serious collectors.

steven4869

Not normal in current standards. This is actually the sales for a single episode of the show and that too for over $30. More than a quarter of a million for a single episode to show their appreciation for this anime. Usually for successful series, it gets 3K sales in current standards, though a decade back the benchmark was 10K.

MyMan_290484

>Other successful series have 3k sales Yeah but those series generally have their volumes going for like $150-200 or so, they aren’t really comparable here

steven4869

GBC is only for one episode, usually the volume contains like 3-4 episodes, numbers will be different by the time they release the next volume to get better picture as it might contain 2-3 episodes since they are going with 7 volumes for 13 episodes.

MyMan_290484

Well it’s good to think it positively. someone’s already made a comparison but they compared Bocchi the rock week 1 sales (16,000) when it had cost like $100 for also only 2 episodes. But yeah you are right, numbers will be different for the 2-3 episodes because of the price. Which will still be pretty cheap judging by pre orders. GBC I feel will get 4-5K copies sold. Which is still successful, but not crazy compared to what everyone thinks. But ofc that’s just my prediction

WobbleKun

damn. animate everything by hand if it prints that kind of money lol
