"Even if your "Pharoah" or "Atem", to me you'll always be Yugi! My best friend! Even if one thousand years we'll always be friends!" -Joey Wheeler
Fr tho why did Atem's return to the afterlife gotta hit so hard
This surprised me.. truly one of my favorite characters, he’s done a lot of help and doesn’t deserve to be called a “milf hunter” just because he called jotaros mom nice. Like you know okuyasu? I assume that his comment about josukes mom is more “milf hunter”
“You were always there for me, and that’s all I needed. Just you. For some reason, I didn’t feel sad or broken up, it just didn’t seem real. But slowly I realized it was real — that you were gone. And little by little, I slowly felt something inside me go numb.” — Jet Black
as a dbz fan, that was so sad. kakarot really perfected the scene with gohan's final kamehameha (final as in last, not vegito's signature move) really containing all his power, but it wasn't. then seeing adult gohan in super being all happy like that, really bad time for the roof to start leaking.
Rengoku is one of my characters and as much as I hate that it happened, I think the way his character went out (protecting tanjiro and going 1v1 against an upper moon) is awesome
What got me crying is the fact he knew he was going to die there. He was just trying to get to sunrise to deflate that basketball but sadly it bounced when it got the chance. Also it made me cry harder when Tanjiro yelled into the forest and even threw his damn sword. I couldn’t sleep that night
I'll admit, a character dying while smiling knowing they did good, and going out on their own terms. In this case Rengoku staying human. Hits me so much harder than a tragic sudden death.
The going Merry's 'death' was knowing that you had to put down your old dog. The dog ends up running away before you can put it down. Then the dog comes back to save you and dies saving you.
Oda has earned every one of those tears.
This is what I site when I say One Piece is the peak of emotional story telling. No other series could make me cry this hard over a boat. It's placement in the arc and the story in general was masterfully done.
Yeah, the way the rain both means he doesn’t want to admit he’s crying, and the deeper meaning of how he is powerless during rain, and how powerless he feels during that scene just ruin me.
Imagine my shock when I found out that Johnathan's death ended up being a sacrifice for Dio to get a new body. The revelation that Dio not only survived their fight, but actually won and successfully stole Johnathan's body was pretty impactful.
The first 1/4 or so of the original, I feel, is better than brotherhood but I think brotherhood is better as a whole. Any scenes that they share it is like brotherhood rushes through them, expecting you to have watched the original first.
Some of the saddest moments I can remember came from “Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai”.
Even more so cuz you really wouldn’t expect it to be that kind of anime based on the title and thumbnail.
The ending still gets me to this day.
Actually it was the bit shortly before this that really gets me. I had forgotten about that scene when I read the manga, having watched Brootherhood years ago, and I actually had to stop reading after forcing my way to the end of the chapter after the pages started to get wet. I thought I was through it and fine after >!Hughes was killed!< since I remembered that being really sad years ago. That probably made it worse, because when >!His daughter started crying and begging them not to put her dad in the ground because he had a lot of work to do!< fucking destroyed me.
It just broke me. I think it was worse that I forgot about it and had already gotten through the worst part just fine, so I had completely let my guard down.
LET ME SEE YOU GRIT YOUR TEETH ~Kamina from Gurren Lagann~
I have used this line so many times on myself to pull myself out of feeling helpless. But whenever I watch it, I end up sobbing.
Rengoku death
Maes Hughes funeral
Nina transformed (FMB)
End of Edgerunners
Mereum death
Lelouch death
Goku saying goodbye before leaving with Cell to die
Vegeta unaliving himself to try and stop Majin Buu
Himmel’s funeral when Frieren cries (on rewatches of Frieren)
Konoha deaths during Pain’s rampage
Pervy Saga aka Jiraiya death
Shikamaru learns Asuma died
Honorable mention for “Leaves on the Vine” from ATLA (anime adjacent)
I’m sure I’m leaving out some good ones. Too many anime to remember. It’s been years since I watched the Ef series, but I remember bawling while watching that series more than any other since.
I liked Sachi for the one episode she appeared in, I just wish she got more time with Kirito, not to mention it was her death, along the Moonlit Black Cats, that made Kirito actually want to die during Aincrad
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaah. 😭😭😭
Other sad moments: end of YLIA (OFC)… >! Mayushi !< in Steins;Gate or >! Amadeus Kurisu’s fate !< in Steins;Gate 0, Both >! Kagari and Masaoka !< in Psycho Pass…. I know there are more, but my brain is fried.
Edited to add: Just read through all the comments. Seriously no Steins;Gate or Psycho-Pass fans? Ugh, those animes are getting old lmao.
I did some research on the watch order of Steins;Gate before diving in. So I watched all the way up until episode 23B then jumped into zero without finishing off the last two episodes. Man Amadeus fuckin’ hurt without seeing the conclusion.
Yeah, that's a pretty sad moment in FMA though I'll always give FMAs saddest moment to an entire episode, **Episode 4: "An Alchemist's Anguish"** ... for obvious reasons.
Also the goat coyote stark, there’s not much in his character considering how fast he died but I loved that man every panel he showed up in he was just awesome
For me it's either Reigen being found out and going down a spiral, a LOT of Gintama moments (first to come to mind is Women Who Ask What's More Important Work or Me Deserve a German Suplex, Oboro's last fight, and Gintoki flashbacks), and then there's when Guts finally brings back Casca's memory that shit is ROUGH to read
2 scenes from Anohana that had me sobbing like a fucking baby:
“I see her. I see the river taking my friend. AND I CAN NEVER MAKE IT STOOOOOP!”
&
“Menma! We found you!”
“We haven’t…. even… …HAD A CHANCE TO TALK THIS THROUGH” - marko aot
“Were you watching, Brünnhilde” -Hercules Record of ragnarock
(Not a anime one but) “tell Lloyd im sorry” -garmadon
Just at the top of my head. That moment after Shohoku's first game against Ryonan. Where Sakuragi was still yelling for the pass. He ran and had his sneakers torn coz they were too beat up.
Just got to the first shots of the war with the Spade kingdom in Black Clover. The Golden Dawn being decimated hit hard, but Siren and Hamon dying outright was a nasty shock. Over half of them, just wiped out.
Can’t wait to do this again, JuJutsu Kaisen, Season 2 Episode 16, 19:09 - 21:29, don’t go a second further or you’ll be scared by wat happens to Jogoat
“I’m sorry, Hanami, Dagon”
“There’s still Mahito. Humans fear and loath death, however it is humans who linger beyond it as well. To humans death is a mirror and Mahito is that mirror. Mahito will continue to grow stronger still, isn’t that why you placed him at the top of our ranks?”
“We’ll no longer be the same, especially not after we are reborn, yet even so I eagerly await the day that three of us are together again. Cursed Spirits are the true humans, not them.”
“What’s this now, you wanted to become a human? Oh yeah I know, you don’t want to actually be human, you just want their position, did I get that right? Even though I understand it, it’s so foolish, packs of humans, packs of curses, all of get together and measure your worth against each other, driving all of you to grow weaker and stunted. You really should’ve just burnt everything down, burnt everything down to a cinder without giving it a thought, casting aside race, future, everything until you finally reached Satoru Gojo. That hunger to seize your ideals, that’s what you were truely lacking.”
“Hmm maybe your right.”
“Even so, you managed to entertain me a bit. I fought humans, sorcerers and cursed spirits a thousand years ago and you were still one of the better ones I fought. Stand proud, you are strong.”
“What am i feeling right now?”
“Good question, I wouldn’t know the answer to that”
It was the kind of sad that u watch over and over cuz of how peak it was
Definitely one of the saddest if not the saddest I've seen.
Although, Your Lie in April has one of the saddest ones too.
Jiraiya's death, but it was a necessary one and he had a fighting chance during that time.
Maybe, Goin Merry scene as well?
I never really got into this anime, but I remember seeing this scene and not really understanding what the hell he was talking about. If he’s talking about his tears then it just seems cheesy to me
“If anyone needs to apologize it’s us, merry!
I’m bad at steering and broke your sails, zoro and sanji fought like idiots and broke thing, usopp tried to fix them but he wasn’t any good at it.”
…
“But I was happy, you always treated me well. Thank you”
I watched this shit when I was like 10 the week after losing my dog. Shit hit the feelings
Either senior pinks backstory and why he wears what he does, the backstory of crona in soul eater and the abuse causing them a multitude of mental health issues, or when ash had to say goodbye to butterfree
This is anime is usually forgotten today but, the entirety on Clannad After story made my cry like a baby. Especially the Ushio and Tomoya train scene. It's one of those animes that I wish was remastered because the story and its message had so much potential.
"I'm so happy. To be killed by you all.." -Korosensei
'No... no.. this can't be real.. it's not fair.. Gohan! GOHAAAAAAAAN!" -Trunks
"Even if your "Pharoah" or "Atem", to me you'll always be Yugi! My best friend! Even if one thousand years we'll always be friends!" -Joey Wheeler Fr tho why did Atem's return to the afterlife gotta hit so hard
"NOW! SET YOUR HEART ABLAZE!" -Kyojuro Rengoku
"This is it, my final Emerald Splash.." -Nagoriyiki Kakyoin
This hurt a lot, knowing that even in his final moments he still thought about his friends and family
This surprised me.. truly one of my favorite characters, he’s done a lot of help and doesn’t deserve to be called a “milf hunter” just because he called jotaros mom nice. Like you know okuyasu? I assume that his comment about josukes mom is more “milf hunter”
What anime is this?
Jojo
“You were always there for me, and that’s all I needed. Just you. For some reason, I didn’t feel sad or broken up, it just didn’t seem real. But slowly I realized it was real — that you were gone. And little by little, I slowly felt something inside me go numb.” — Jet Black
It’s “Noriaki”
This one hurt, I have been binging all of the anime, done will all of Season 0, DM, GX, BBT, and half of 5Ds
as a dbz fan, that was so sad. kakarot really perfected the scene with gohan's final kamehameha (final as in last, not vegito's signature move) really containing all his power, but it wasn't. then seeing adult gohan in super being all happy like that, really bad time for the roof to start leaking.
😭
Yeah, this sucks even more because weve known it had to happen
Tabidachi no uta
God dammit I’m getting emotional over this again
When I first watched it I was crying in my room until I fell asleep 😭 even though I read the manga I wasn’t ready for this
This is the very first moment that popped into my head.
SHIIIIIIIIZAAAAAAAAAAAAA
“Sir, I just asked what salad you wanted. No need to shout.”
A Shiza salad, huh? I'm more of a Cobb salad man, myself.
Set your heart ablaze
Rengoku is one of my characters and as much as I hate that it happened, I think the way his character went out (protecting tanjiro and going 1v1 against an upper moon) is awesome
What got me crying is the fact he knew he was going to die there. He was just trying to get to sunrise to deflate that basketball but sadly it bounced when it got the chance. Also it made me cry harder when Tanjiro yelled into the forest and even threw his damn sword. I couldn’t sleep that night
Every time I read that sentence I hear his voice and my eyes swell up
To me this wasn’t a sad moment, this was a man fulfilling his duty and dying as he chose to.
I'll admit, a character dying while smiling knowing they did good, and going out on their own terms. In this case Rengoku staying human. Hits me so much harder than a tragic sudden death.
This takes the cake after Sanemi’s backstory
I know it's a bit cheesy but in One Piece when the Clown pirates destroy the pet store that Chouchou is protecting for his dead owner.
That is in no way cheesy. Chouchou’s pet store was his home, and destroying it made me loathe buggy.
yeah Buggy def deserved to go to impel down for that
I almost broke down watching that scene
And yes, even for you… Kakarot.
>And yes, even for you... Best Buddy. FTFY
Vegeta no!!!
Vegeta.... YEEEEEEEEEES!!!!!
real
Gave me goosebumps remembering this just now.
And just before that too: "Trunks, you are my only son, and yet I haven't held you once since you were a baby, have I? Come here, son".
Meruem and Komugi’s last moments in HxH have me in shambles every time…
Ugh this is so good too
Going Merry's funeral. This made me cry buckets.
I came here for this. Everybody else talking about their favorite characters dying. One Piece had me crying over a fucking boat!
Holy fuck I'm so glad I watched it alone, shit fucking SHATTERED me
Bro I had to stop watching. I’m on thriller bark now. Water 7 just hit so different
Water 7 and Enies Lobby were fucking emotional roller coasters.
This exact fucking scene
Yeah, the way the rain both means he doesn’t want to admit he’s crying, and the deeper meaning of how he is powerless during rain, and how powerless he feels during that scene just ruin me.
I see you also understand the true meaning of his words as well. Still that man didn’t have to die
It was his daughter's reaction shortly before hand that absolutely destroyed me.
This scene, but when his daughter ask "why are they burying daddy? Dear Lord, that fucking destroys me.
Agreed
Johnathan's death Caeser's death Kakyoin's death Shigechi's death Abachio's death Everyone's death All these JoJo deaths were essentially sacrifices.
Imagine my shock when I found out that Johnathan's death ended up being a sacrifice for Dio to get a new body. The revelation that Dio not only survived their fight, but actually won and successfully stole Johnathan's body was pretty impactful.
Fuck you, why did you not mention IGGY
I did one death per part (except SO)
“Big brother Edward” Nina did not deserve it and to anyone who hasn’t seen the original scene go watch it it’s more brutal then brotherhood’s version
The first 1/4 or so of the original, I feel, is better than brotherhood but I think brotherhood is better as a whole. Any scenes that they share it is like brotherhood rushes through them, expecting you to have watched the original first.
Oh man that is one of the best scenes
Then ending of if I want to eat your pancreas actually had me crying
On god. I bawled
Maes Hughes
For me it is the end of Your lie in April
Yes.
You know you cried during Clannad S2. At some point you cried, don’t deny it.
Bawled my eyes out
Last episode of Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again
Damn I'm sad now
You know you are tearing up when your vision is blurring. If I had to say, rengoku death made me actually tear up
Some of the saddest moments I can remember came from “Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai”. Even more so cuz you really wouldn’t expect it to be that kind of anime based on the title and thumbnail. The ending still gets me to this day.
Attack on Titan finale…
Actually it was the bit shortly before this that really gets me. I had forgotten about that scene when I read the manga, having watched Brootherhood years ago, and I actually had to stop reading after forcing my way to the end of the chapter after the pages started to get wet. I thought I was through it and fine after >!Hughes was killed!< since I remembered that being really sad years ago. That probably made it worse, because when >!His daughter started crying and begging them not to put her dad in the ground because he had a lot of work to do!< fucking destroyed me.
>! “Mommy, why are they burying Daddy? He has work to do!!! !< ugh so rough.
It just broke me. I think it was worse that I forgot about it and had already gotten through the worst part just fine, so I had completely let my guard down.
Fair enough.
An underrated sad scene is >!the part before Nanami dies when he's fighting the curses and also imagining he's on the beach!< Imo
If there is going to be spoiler then you should say what anime it is
it’s jujutsu kaisen for anyone wondering. spoilers for part of the shibuya arc.
Cried myself to sleep after watching his death
so far for me it has been the last episode of **Plastic Memories** when >!they got on the ferris wheel!< it was game over for my feels
Now I miss Isla
>!Kuma’s backstory had me crying multiple different times, it’s so unbelievably sad!<
Iggy's death in JJBA still makes me tear up to this day
When the Elric brothers find out what Shou Tucker did to his wife, daughter and dog
Nina and Shou. But also since no one talks about it hearing Gluttony beg Pride not to eat him and saying it hurts was so sad.
Or envy’s end.
Yes that one two
The final voyage of the Going Merry.
Bro bro fight the powuh
Do the impossible. See the invisible.
Later... buddy.
My Drill will Pierce the Heavens
LET ME SEE YOU GRIT YOUR TEETH ~Kamina from Gurren Lagann~ I have used this line so many times on myself to pull myself out of feeling helpless. But whenever I watch it, I end up sobbing.

I'm surprised I had to scroll this far to see anything from Naruto. I will always be sad about Jiraiya's death. It feels like losing a grandfather.
really any major death in Jojo’s
Angel Beats! The scene where Hinata promised Yui that he would marry her and she passes on to the next life. That one really broke me.
Same
I can't believe I had to scroll this far to find something from Angel Beats. I cried so hard watching that show that I had to change my shirt.
SHIIIIIIIIZAAAAAAA!
Lelouch dying and this scene were way too heavy man
Escanor's death was sad as all hell.
The end of edgerunners. I was fucking changed by that show. It was one of the first animes I watched… but god my entire personality changed from that.
If the word "mitsuketa" doesn't make you cry, you're heartless.
Made in abyss episode 13
Ep ten in violet Evergarden *Ann..*
I’ve only seen the first one. Got some catching up to do.
I am disappointed I had to scroll down this far.
A backstory in one piece egghead
All deaths in 86
“…Meat…”
Korosensei death Sachi death Eugeo death
Sachi why?!?!?!? lol. Eugeos death hit me much harder, though. You didn’t get to meet sachi enough.
I liked Sachi for the one episode she appeared in, I just wish she got more time with Kirito, not to mention it was her death, along the Moonlit Black Cats, that made Kirito actually want to die during Aincrad
It wasn't her death that made me cry but her Christmas message, her last words
Look mom, I'm here at the very top of Arasaka Tower
I still can't listen to that fucking song
I'll be vibing to the most optimistic song, that song comes on and I just have an existential crisis
Saddest moments in anime is when you finish a goated 12 episode anime and realize they’re never going to make season 2
Future gohan final stand
Later... Buddy Kamina
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaah. 😭😭😭 Other sad moments: end of YLIA (OFC)… >!

The family meal in Erased hits hard
Every death in JJBA
Also the goat coyote stark, there’s not much in his character considering how fast he died but I loved that man every panel he showed up in he was just awesome
This is it! 20 metre radius, emerald splash!
Don’t know if young justice counts but when >!kid flash dies saving the world!<
I remember seeing that episode in 4th grade and not being able to enjoy anything for the rest of the weekend because I was so sad.
Gather up all the crew it’s time to ship out Binks brew Yo-hohohohooooooooooo
Not just a moment but the ENTIRE ANIME. cyberpunk edgerunners
Last episode of your lie in April is the saddest moment in anime to me lol. Broke me.
scrolled to see this
This moment, the gundam ibo deaths, and Cesar’s death in jojo were really heart breaking
last couple of episodes of anohana
Hide in Seek in Anohana had me bawling, partially because of what was going on in my life around the time I watched it but still
Arrowsmith's fly-by at the end of golden wind.
Last episode of the Swordsmith Village Arc in Demon Slayer. That or Rengoku.
2 scenes from Anohana that had me sobbing like a fucking baby: “I see her. I see the river taking my friend. AND I CAN NEVER MAKE IT STOOOOOP!” & “Menma! We found you!”
Ai hoshino at the end of episode one of Oshi no Ko, she didn’t deserve that man
The end of edgerunners.
Lights death
“We haven’t…. even… …HAD A CHANCE TO TALK THIS THROUGH” - marko aot “Were you watching, Brünnhilde” -Hercules Record of ragnarock (Not a anime one but) “tell Lloyd im sorry” -garmadon
Violet evergarden...."Okaa-san!!!"
Just at the top of my head. That moment after Shohoku's first game against Ryonan. Where Sakuragi was still yelling for the pass. He ran and had his sneakers torn coz they were too beat up.
Lowkey I think the ending to Darling in the Franxx is really sad/bittersweet. It's the only show that has ever actually made me cry
For me it's gotta be when Violet ran across the water for that author in Violet Evergarden
The going merry burning scene
Just got to the first shots of the war with the Spade kingdom in Black Clover. The Golden Dawn being decimated hit hard, but Siren and Hamon dying outright was a nasty shock. Over half of them, just wiped out.
"Sorry, man... I couldn't keep the promise we made... from one man to another..." -Mondo, DRV1
The ending of Death Parade fucking got me so bad ngl
I haven’t watched as much anime as I have read manga, but for me it’s Transformers Armada when Starscream sacrifices his life.
Trigun and the death of Nicholas D. Wolfwood
Lmao
"Later, Buddy."
IMO the saddest part isnt with the Colonel, but Hughes’ daughter. “Why are they burying daddy? He still had work to do.”
Going Merry's Funeral
"You are my irreplaceable friend"
Prushka the poor child
End of Your Name. Or most somewhere in most of Shinkai’s films. End of Shinsekai Yori and Code Gaess got me also.
Zabuza Momochi dying the first time I cried for anything anime and it was the last.
Can’t wait to do this again, JuJutsu Kaisen, Season 2 Episode 16, 19:09 - 21:29, don’t go a second further or you’ll be scared by wat happens to Jogoat “I’m sorry, Hanami, Dagon” “There’s still Mahito. CHIZZZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Nina - Fullmetal Alchemist
All of the Akame ga Kill deaths of night raid were rough. "Let go and scream, Tatsumi! With all the fire in your soul!"
Definitely one of the saddest if not the saddest I've seen. Although, Your Lie in April has one of the saddest ones too. Jiraiya's death, but it was a necessary one and he had a fighting chance during that time. Maybe, Goin Merry scene as well?
The Magnificent Steiner - he became human again 😭😭😭
I never really got into this anime, but I remember seeing this scene and not really understanding what the hell he was talking about. If he’s talking about his tears then it just seems cheesy to me
I'm pretty sure he never said "yes it is" he just stood there in silence Riza was in a mild shook looking up at mustang notice he was crying
“Without You I’ll Never Be King Of The Pirates!”
"For now the final daimyo serving Kozuki... Nay, the friendly oddball of Ebisu Town, shall make the final grand journey!"
"Ed...ward"
"I want to eat your pancreas" when the MC reads the book made by the girl after she died
“Ed…ward…” That scene broke me. Or the scene in Made in Abyss when the two girls are pulled up together….
that violet evergarden episode. you all know it
For me, one of them has to be the aot ova "no regrets" when >!levi finds out his friends are dead and goes apeshit on that titan!<
“If anyone needs to apologize it’s us, merry! I’m bad at steering and broke your sails, zoro and sanji fought like idiots and broke thing, usopp tried to fix them but he wasn’t any good at it.” … “But I was happy, you always treated me well. Thank you” I watched this shit when I was like 10 the week after losing my dog. Shit hit the feelings
Surprised nobody has said Ai’s death in Oshi No Ko when that was the defining moment of the first episode
Either senior pinks backstory and why he wears what he does, the backstory of crona in soul eater and the abuse causing them a multitude of mental health issues, or when ash had to say goodbye to butterfree
“Do you think I deserved to be born?” “That’s something you’ll learn by living” garp responding to ace
"Anne, happy eighteenth birthday"
The second Ash was stabbed, and then just went back into the library..
Dango dango dango
“Dedicate your heart…” “Haha, didnt think id ever hear you say that..”
Steinsgate: the inevitability of dododooo
What a unit
Elfen lied took me on a bit of an emotional rollercoaster
Only Animes to ever get me shedding tears were Clannad and Dusk Maiden of Amnesia. Just ignore the last 2 minutes of DMoA.
Luffy hitting the ground crying seeing >!his friends disappear!<
Soon to come. But even pandas cry
This is anime is usually forgotten today but, the entirety on Clannad After story made my cry like a baby. Especially the Ushio and Tomoya train scene. It's one of those animes that I wish was remastered because the story and its message had so much potential.
The grave scene in violet evergarden when she goes to see the last place she saw major. Also the ending of Angel Beats
I finished your lie in april I may need a bit of RR right now
The only time I actually cried in an anime was Akame Ga Kill.
