I had a manager ask me to start documenting my job. It was a new manager for the department. Company started reorganizing the management, etc, blah blah. You know the drill. Manager said he’d like me to document my job so he knew everything I did. I had noticed in a few meetings prior to this that anytime I volunteered for projects or made any mention of my longevity at the company he would avoid the subject. Message received! I documented nothing. Changed all my passwords. Integrated all the remote infrastructure into my stuff with the new passwords so all the stores now ran from the new stuff I built over the years. Well, the day came and they fired me. Idiot didn’t have the passwords so they just shut off the servers. Damn. Too bad those services weren’t set to auto start. Would have been nice if he knew Linux. Do not help those people who would do you harm. Fuck them.
A guy in California was jailed for 4 years and ordered to pay 1.5 mil restitution for doing this. It sounds very satisfying, but it is very illegal in some places.
He did that to the city of San Francisco. The city of San Francisco [sent him to jail](https://www.computerworld.com/article/1514194/network-admin-terry-childs-gets-4-year-sentence.html). Don't fuck with the city, because they have the power to throw you in jail. But a random company? No, not the same thing.
Pretty sure that was a situation where a killswitch tied to his employment status caused critical systems to delete themselves. Sounds like OP just didn't document how to do his job. Different outcomes.
This is bad advice, I’ve seen a company go after someone for deleting history. “Destruction” of company files (the history log)
Would not do this, I would on the other hand create documentation that is in fact bullshit. I would leverage GPT for this
It’s not advice. It’s a statement. I wouldn’t advise anyone do this either. Especially if you have anything to lose. In this case I had given the manager his password multiple times. The old manager, who still worked there, did have access. I doubt he remembered it. I didn’t damage anything. It was they who shut the servers off not knowing what they were for. If they had just spent some time they could have easily gotten shell access. They were just incompetent.
do not steal secrets. that can land you in a heap of debt. instead, you just file for unemployment, cite constructive dismissal, you have years of trouble free employment and meeting goals.
A mentor told me that if you die, your job is looking for a replacement the next day. Business must go on. Hope you’re already on LinkedIn searching for something else.
Make sure you don’t sign ANYTHING they give you, even if they try and refuse your final check until you do, just call the DOL and don’t inform them that you did.
One plus side, they’ve acknowledged they are terminating you in 7 days, which means you’re still employed despite knowing they want to terminate you, so getting unemployment should be relatively easy since what you did wasn’t so bad they had to terminate you right away, but decided to keep you on for their benefit.
constructive dismissal. look into it. let them fire you, collect unemployment, keep records of the reason for the PIP, but also the fact that you have 11 years at the company without having issues, and you were meeting goals. start gathering records now, because in a week you lose access and they can "oopsie" any data bout you.
Write down the bare minimum of information you can provide, change all device passwords to things with lots of capital Is and lowercase Ls and O and zeros and bs and ds… maybe make the passwords 50+ characters long then write them all by hand on a piece of paper for them and hand it over. Make sure to know the line between PITA and illegal and stay just to the inside of it.
Yeah, don't quit, make them fire you, then file for unemployment.
Even if you only get a week's worth of UI in a state where the payout is negligible, it bugs the shit out of them. And they can wave their stupid PIP around all they want, but inability to do the job doesn't disqualify you from UI.
PIPs are not 'work on getting better'. It is advanced notice you will be gone at the end. They are simply documentation to get you out for cause. Anytime you get PIPd you need to coast while you interview and move on.
PiPs with a termination shortly after is considered constructive dismissal here, especially if you have years of trouble free employment. OP should have no trouble getting unemployment in a decent Dem run state.
unemployement is usually well lower than what you would have made from working. California is the only state with constructive dismissal - PIPs give you an end date. That is the date you will be fired. It's usually 4-6 weeks.
Yep, many companies have a… if you build it on company time it becomes our copyrighted program/script/etc so if try to pull that you can be sued into oblivion.
Pretty sure being placed on a PIP is of your own accord not anyone else’s. You’re in charge of your own metrics. If you need help again it’s up to you to reach out and get that help
Mmmh no. While some PIPs are valid, it is a common practice to fire an employee with justification. My husband was put on a PIP, and no one knew why. Except his manager HATED him. She just so happened to be away when his review came up, and her boss handled my husband's pip review. She said she had no idea why he was put on one. He was meeting/exceeding expectations. There must have been a mistake. He was off pip and kept his job. Until she put him on another one and this time she did fire him.
If his bosses boss said he was doing great, it clearly wasn't a lack of his work ethic or abilities. It was a personal issue she had specifically with him.
I had an incompetent manager put me on a PIP because I "talked back with attitude", except he was an idiot, I was a union collective agreement employee covering for an ill salary worker in a different department. The owner got rid of the loser manager the next year. Big balls make less profit.

What case was that? That sounds highly suspicious.
I'm guessing this: https://www.computerworld.com/article/1514194/network-admin-terry-childs-gets-4-year-sentence.html

resetting the root password is ez pz as long as you can console the server.
You use company provided encryption software and forget the password.

PIP plan? Isn't PIP = Performance Improvement Plan?
PIP plan! "Performance improvement plan" plan. The plan without the quotations is the real one. The plan to fire you.

Don’t do a damn thing at work for the next week except look for another job.
A mentor told me that if you die, your job is looking for a replacement the next day. Business must go on. Hope you’re already on LinkedIn searching for something else.
That was being generous. Most employers have the ad up internally before the coroner arrives and publicly by the time the family is notified.
Same day in a lot of cases.
7 days paid to look for another job
I never believe in loyalty to a company. I am out for number 1. Me
Sidenote: a PIP is a job performance improvement plan.
It's funny how performance improvement plans never include a plan on how to improve your performance.
I'm reading here that they are mostly used as a pretext to fire a worker. Yet another scam cooked up by MBAs.

>Remember, a company can fire you in a heartbeat. Not if I quit first they won't.
Don’t quit, make them fire you.

time to do nothing in 7 days and laugh on your way out, make sure your personal items are out.

lol, most states have constructive dismissal rules. MN observes it as a condition, you just need to go argue it with a preponderance of the evidence.
I’m in a red state…
you are fucked sir. good luck.
☹️
If you KNOW you're getting fired in 7 days and have PTO, I'd take them days now.
unless you are in a state that requires they pay out PTO, then save it
Yep, many companies have a… if you build it on company time it becomes our copyrighted program/script/etc so if try to pull that you can be sued into oblivion.
I wouldn’t feel to bad just move on most work places are going to be toxic like this now.

I actually just reported my manager for doing exactly this to a coworker. It’s pretty clear-cut harassment/retaliation/favoritism (pick your poison).
Lol, sweet summer child.
