True, the XS Max back glass was slippier than now which has a frosted more grippy texture, but the phones are so top heavy it wants to flip out of your hand
Alternatively, I stopped using a case with my iphone x, and haven’t dropped it since (previous phones with cases were all cracked). I promise youll be more careful with it.
They sell cases.. they want you to buy a case and Apple Care is already included for the many people who use the iUP program. I’m caseless but this is a corporate conspiracy that doesn’t make sense
I don't use it but I thought the subscription model became kind of the gold standard since it's been launched (whether iUP or through a carrier), maybe that was just my perception.
iUP is the most expensive of the financing options. I think most people just do a trade in with a 0% APR loan from their carrier.
I just don’t think the motivation exists anymore for people to always have the latest iPhone. I honestly struggle to know what the new tentpole features are every year. And Apple doesn’t help. The tagline for last years iPhone was just “titanium.” Ok that’s it? It’s titanium now? This year it’s just “new-phoria.” Like excuse me the feature of this year’s iPhone is just that *it’s new???*
Yup still have my 11 pro max used to upgrade phones every year before apple and after I switched. In the market now only because the camera takes forever to load when I take pictures which is very rare and the battery is dying

Yeah the only reason I upgraded from my 12 was the battery. And also I secretly wanted the pro motion display after having it used on my iPad Pro. The 12 is with my father in law with a new battery.
Then give me a plastic back so I don't feel like the back will shatter if I look at it wrong.
Seriously, plastic phones were great when they had good plastic. Sure they scratched up good, but they never felt unsafe to hold like a glass backed phone with a spiderwebbed back.

The issue I have is that when you’re playing games and there’s no bezel you end up with a lot of false touches that mess with the game. My 11 ProMax has pretty big bezels compared to newer phones and just holding the phone causes issues. I don’t actually mind having space to hold my phone.
This is exactly why iOS needs to enforce a no-touch border around the edges of the display. Apps can still place info/imagery there, but no good app should use the absolute edges for touch controls.
I have an 11 Pro, and similar to you, I hate it when apps put controls too close to the edge. Either you’re accidentally touching them when you don’t want to, or it requires unnatural contortion of the finger to get to the control. Especially with a case. I can only imagine how much worse it would be with thinner bezels.
Most app developers suck and don’t think about these kinds of poor user experience situations, so Apple just needs to enforce it at the OS level. It doesn’t need to be a very wide area.
Massive pain in the ass with tapping the top area to go to the top of any page or app too. Sometimes I hold the phone by the top corner while I grab something out of my pocket and it scrolls all the way to the top
They probably spent thousands of hours in R&D for accidental touch rejection after years of complaints on their curved screens.
My S7 edge had quite a few phantom touches but my S8, S9+, Note 10+ and S22 Ultra were pretty much perfect in that regard.
dbrind grip case is becoming mandatory imo. Once you switch to it you'll never go back to a traditional case tho. I started with an old pixel and still use it for my iphone now, I literally couldn't use my phone without one now.

I actually already run into that problem with the iphone 15 pro. When running a game in landscape mode and holding it two handed, my palms sometimes hit the edges of the screen and cause an unintended input.
And when reading something horizontally I accidentally touch on the status bar and it scrolls to the top 😂 wish they implemented a dead zone or something.
Single tap after accidentally scrolling takes you back. Just tested it.

The really annoying time to do this is in the files app in long pdfs. Apples files pdf viewer is very barebones and having to scroll and find what page I was on is so annoying lol.

That's a software problem though. The OS has enough info to estimate hand position and ignore that kind of touch. iPads have had palm rejection forever, hopefully a thinner-bezel phone will have a lot of work invested in ignoring incidental touches from holding the phone.
It matters more around the Dynamic Island. If they can shave off enough of the bezel there, they can shrink it and move the island up. It’s currently deeper than the notch was so 18:9 video is cut off slightly.
Just remove the thing and go square borders. Too spoiled after buying an s24 ultra. That screen is just more functional, bigger and better to look at and use for videos, pictures and apps along with its amazing anti glare while still being glossy and retaining high image quality. A much better user experience
Square corners look god awful for ergonomics, the flat edges on iPhones since the 12 is pretty bad but Apple rounded them on the 15s and they’re actually not terrible to hold like my 14 is without a case.
I will say after owning the s24 ultra, I don’t find the square corners bad at all. The phone is slimmer and feels lighter somehow and easier to hold than my 15 pro max. The screen is so much better than rounded corner screens and having a huge Dynamic Island black blob blocking content when watching videos, playing games, looking at photos etc. vertical videos on instagram, ticktock etc. aren’t also cropped in with worse composition like on iPhone
Square corners look good but they’re not really comfortable. If Apple went back to touchID then they could or they need to figure out a way to hide most of the sensors. Kinda irrelevant to talk about the display surface though.
the bezels being too thin are about the only reason I use a case now with my 14 pro. Apple needs to figure out how to stop accidental touches on the edges like they did with the trackpad and so forth.
My last Android device before I switched to iPhone was a Samsung edge device. I thought I’d like the extra space but I was always accidentally pressing buttons. Felt like a gimmick really quickly. Personally im fine with the bezels as they exist.
I went from an 8+ to a 14 ProMax over a year ago and the lack of dead space near the bottom is my only gripe. I’ve gotten a lot better with it but it’s still a daily inconvenience
Well the iPhone was a test bed for hole punch / notch tech. I believe the folded OLED was in iPhone X first. Conversely the Apple Watch was a test bed for OLED.
So I don’t think it’s fixed on who gets to be a test bed but I doubt they will make it a signature feature on the iPhone. It will probably be a signature feature on the watch tho.
Well because Apple doesn’t just make a single bullet point feature. They envision the roadmaps of products and generate sub-projects that can be progressively rolled out to all the other products. FaceID is one of those that is rollout from iPhones into iPads then MacBooks. Whenever there’s a feature in the iPhone, you can be very sure they have considered putting it in other products. Something like Action button will probably come to iPad too.
It may take multiple generations for product to be on the same functional level but eventually it will get there. The flat edge of MacBooks finally matched the flat edge of iPhones and iPad.
Software wise, sometimes unused features or early designs flow back into iOS. iOS 17’s nightstand mode was so stupidly fully featured for a display mode that some speculated it was probably extracted from the long rumoured HomePod with screen. They did it to prepare widget developers so there’s 3rd party widget for it when the product lunches eventually, rumoured in late 2024z
I agree that Apple rolls out features gradually like that.
But I think standby mode could use some work. Requiring faceID for it to display photos is a little obnoxious. And the widgets could use some work. Also the fact that you can’t edit it except in standby mode.

I'm always saying this. I miss the nice, comfortable, large bezels on the top and bottom of the phone. I miss the complete screen without notches, holes, and cut corners.
The best solution I found is to only use a case when going out. I get to enjoy the beauty of the phone at home and at the same time protect it when going out. Best of both worlds
Can’t make a tech better by not developing on it further. And to develop it further means to include it in consumer devices, flaws and all. I hope to see under display camera tech reach the point they’re just as good as any front facing camera.

Cameras under the display with little to no compromise in picture quality is a pipe dream.
Until we have displays that don’t just go transparent but can be as optically transparent as actual glass. Then there should always be a cutout for the selfie camera.
And with apples switch from notch to pill and the introduction of the Dynamic Island in software. I bet Apple isn’t expecting to get rid of a hardware cutout entirely. Anytime soon.
That said everything to do with FaceID is probably going under the display soon.
I really miss the phones with the pop-up cameras, it's a shame they were only around for a couple years. The pill is one of the main things I dislike about iPhones, sure the dynamic island is kinda cool but I'd rather have a smaller cutout, or none at all.

The reason that made the notch and dynamic island, and that Apple hasn’t adopted whole punch cameras, is because it would be impossible to with current technology. Unlike android Apple has multiple sensors in the truedepth camera system. Sutch ad the infrared dot projector.

I kinda want them to stop making it bigger. The size of the 15 Pro Max is honestly perfect IMO -- especially since it became lighter this generation. It feels great in the hand and the bezels look pretty slim as it is.
I like big phones but there's a limit.
I just wish it was easier to pick “your size”. Steve Jobs said the original 3.5 inch screen was the perfect size and he would never compromise on that. I think all of us agree it should be bigger.

A lot of people do things only on their phone these days too. So in a way makes sense people just want the biggest screen they can to watch content, read, sign documents, write emails.
Is it crazy, yea give me a laptop at least, but I know people that do everything on their phone.
Of course they don't sell when companies constantly pack all the features into the larger sizes. Not to mention the natural cutoff of battery life due to size limitations.
Instead of discontinuing the mini, Apple could have kept it available but separated it from the yearly iPhone update. Update it when there’s significant progress on battery tech.
Apple is big enough of a company to have one model to cater to the minority who want small one hand phone.
I wouldn’t put mini as an SE. SE should be a budget option that works for most people, and most people want at least a 6 inch screen. Mini is a niche model for a minority, and that minority wants a premium compact phone that only small in size but big on other features. And in tech, it often actually costs more to make a compact product. Small doesn’t mean cheap.
I still think it’s possible Apple is planning a return of the mini with exactly this kind of long term strategy. Something that sits between the iPhone SE And yearly iPhone updates at a price that’s comparable to the standard phones but with the cadence of an SE
And as it won’t have those yearly update flagship specs. And might trade away some of the nice things like a second camera. Then it would make sense to kill the 12/13mini for a bit so when they do relaunch the mini it isn’t compared so directly to those and can be evaluated as its own thing
Create a mini, improve battery life on smaller phones, stop making the Max just a blown up Pro and instead make the resolution larger for people who want to utilise all the wasted space. Instead the iPhone 15s main selling point was Titanium like anyone actually notices or gives a crap about that. Now we're getting a minuscule improvement on the screen which is likely going to encourage involuntary inputs and more durability issues.
No wonder people are still rocking iPhones Xs/11s. There really is little to no change anymore.
Beyond a point I think the bezel reduction will have to stop. Because we have already moved on from curved screens, so for structural integrity there has to be some bezel.
It's already hard to hold an iphone to watch youtube because of the silly thin bezel. If you even touch a tiny amount of the corner, youtube goes into 2x playback mode. This is youtube's UI problem, but I still want to be able to hold my phone in a comfortable way.
I already suffer from the occasional accidental touch with my palm on the bottom right corner (right handed), so even smaller bezels actually sounds worse for me
They need to go back to releasing S models of their existing phone, because really iphones 12 to 15 have just been the same phone with slight improvement. And now add to it 16. It’s getting ridiculous and boring.
What im saying is that if its minor changes they should just release them as 15s or 15r or whatever like they did with iphone x, xr and xs and the ones before it.
Since they stopped doing this there hasn’t been any significant changes between every years “new” phone release. It was all slight bezel changes and slight camera enhancements. The bar has been set low for whats worthy of a release and it suppressed their motivation to be creative. And it’s not just Apple other brand are guilty of this too.
The hardware innovation has kind of died down with apple and they had to compensate with software features. They’ve even got rid of the silent button on 15pro that everyone liked. thats a hardware downgrade in return for a software upgrade! Same with the in your face pill dynamic island.
If they for example re-added the touch ID, or changed the whole design, or made a foldable variant or massively improved the battery life, then thats worthy of a new phone release in my opinion.
Personally I prefer just releasing the numbers in order than having random s releases. For a time it made sense because it was a faster version of the same phone and the other release was a new design. We won’t get new designs every other year so why name them that way. Every phone is faster than the last so s doesn’t mean much. I don’t think they have pressure to release more because of a name
I just hope this doesn’t come at the cost of durability.
I think the majority of people given the choice between 1 or 1.5mm of bezel or extra drop protection would pick the latter.

I hate that the DI takes soo much usable screen space by making the status bar larger when other phone manufacturers are maximizing screen space.
I went to the 15 to get USB-C but then they made the screen micro-curved again which makes putting on a screen protector look like shit with the black borders. Can’t they just make it a flat glass screen? Most people put on a case and never feel the screen edge.

Mine hasn’t budged. It’s more like the precision of the black border vs the screen protector glass and placing it in JUST the right spot which is annoying because if it’s a hair off it looks weird from all angles.

They should use LIPO, or low-injection pressure over-molding, to inject more LiPo, or lithium polymer, for bigger batteries into the phone for our wallets to get lipo, or liposuction.
My 15 pro max is so good I’m not sure what would get me to upgrade to a 16 pro max. Honestly I might even just wait a few months after release when you can find great deals on FB marketplace.
I find use out of the thing. I’d actually want it to be *more* incorporated into daily use. Right now it’s an easy-to-use taskbar, especially when driving.

Apollo (the Reddit app) had it if I remember correctly. Double tapping the status bar brings you back to where you were.

Yeah this happens a lot on the youtube app. My videos go 2x speed because a piece of skin is resting on the screen
And when an ad starts/ends it keeps it at 2x, so you have to go into the settings to go back to 1x.

It matters more around the Dynamic Island. If they can shave off enough of the bezel there, they can shrink it and move the island up. It’s currently deeper than the notch was so 18:9 video is cut off slightly.
I could definitely go for a smaller Dynamic Island.
Just remove the thing and go square borders. Too spoiled after buying an s24 ultra. That screen is just more functional, bigger and better to look at and use for videos, pictures and apps along with its amazing anti glare while still being glossy and retaining high image quality. A much better user experience
Square corners look god awful for ergonomics, the flat edges on iPhones since the 12 is pretty bad but Apple rounded them on the 15s and they’re actually not terrible to hold like my 14 is without a case.
I will say after owning the s24 ultra, I don’t find the square corners bad at all. The phone is slimmer and feels lighter somehow and easier to hold than my 15 pro max. The screen is so much better than rounded corner screens and having a huge Dynamic Island black blob blocking content when watching videos, playing games, looking at photos etc. vertical videos on instagram, ticktock etc. aren’t also cropped in with worse composition like on iPhone

the bezels being too thin are about the only reason I use a case now with my 14 pro. Apple needs to figure out how to stop accidental touches on the edges like they did with the trackpad and so forth.

I’ve had that problem for a few generations of iPhones now.
My last Android device before I switched to iPhone was a Samsung edge device. I thought I’d like the extra space but I was always accidentally pressing buttons. Felt like a gimmick really quickly. Personally im fine with the bezels as they exist.
I went from an 8+ to a 14 ProMax over a year ago and the lack of dead space near the bottom is my only gripe. I’ve gotten a lot better with it but it’s still a daily inconvenience
These tech is expected to flow into mainly other products. Like Apple Watch. The iPhone is just a convenient test bed.

Well the iPhone was a test bed for hole punch / notch tech. I believe the folded OLED was in iPhone X first. Conversely the Apple Watch was a test bed for OLED. So I don’t think it’s fixed on who gets to be a test bed but I doubt they will make it a signature feature on the iPhone. It will probably be a signature feature on the watch tho.

Well because Apple doesn’t just make a single bullet point feature. They envision the roadmaps of products and generate sub-projects that can be progressively rolled out to all the other products. FaceID is one of those that is rollout from iPhones into iPads then MacBooks. Whenever there’s a feature in the iPhone, you can be very sure they have considered putting it in other products. Something like Action button will probably come to iPad too. It may take multiple generations for product to be on the same functional level but eventually it will get there. The flat edge of MacBooks finally matched the flat edge of iPhones and iPad. Software wise, sometimes unused features or early designs flow back into iOS. iOS 17’s nightstand mode was so stupidly fully featured for a display mode that some speculated it was probably extracted from the long rumoured HomePod with screen. They did it to prepare widget developers so there’s 3rd party widget for it when the product lunches eventually, rumoured in late 2024z
I agree that Apple rolls out features gradually like that. But I think standby mode could use some work. Requiring faceID for it to display photos is a little obnoxious. And the widgets could use some work. Also the fact that you can’t edit it except in standby mode. Just a little venting about standby because I was messing with it last night. It needs work.

The best solution I found is to only use a case when going out. I get to enjoy the beauty of the phone at home and at the same time protect it when going out. Best of both worlds

No you’re exactly right. And imagine how real people would react if their brand new iPhone took selfies that were substantially, obviously and objectively worse than their previous phone. Cameras under the display with little to no compromise in picture quality is a pipe dream. Until we have displays that don’t just go transparent but can be as optically transparent as actual glass. Then there should always be a cutout for the selfie camera. And with apples switch from notch to pill and the introduction of the Dynamic Island in software. I bet Apple isn’t expecting to get rid of a hardware cutout entirely. Anytime soon. That said everything to do with FaceID is probably going under the display soon.
I really miss the phones with the pop-up cameras, it's a shame they were only around for a couple years. The pill is one of the main things I dislike about iPhones, sure the dynamic island is kinda cool but I'd rather have a smaller cutout, or none at all.

I kinda want them to stop making it bigger. The size of the 15 Pro Max is honestly perfect IMO -- especially since it became lighter this generation. It feels great in the hand and the bezels look pretty slim as it is. I like big phones but there's a limit.
I just wish it was easier to pick “your size”. Steve Jobs said the original 3.5 inch screen was the perfect size and he would never compromise on that. I think all of us agree it should be bigger. To parrot what every person seems to say, I wish it was thicker and had a larger battery

I was anti-max iPhones due to weight… then I held the 15 pro max and loved that it wasn’t super heavy… and became a first time Max guy lol
Same thoughts but then I had to stick a case on it and it doesn’t feel that compact or light anymore. So I’m sort of having buyers remorse. But the extra battery life is great.
Spigen ultra hybrid I think is the one I use. Barely adds any weight at all. And it doesn’t add much bulk.
I'm the opposite. I think thin bezels on a ~~small~~ perfectly normal!! (sub-6") phone would be awesome. I am forever missing the Mini.
I'm on a 13 Pro and while I do notice the thicker bezels when comparing to newer iPhones, I really, really don't mind. Like what are a couple of pixels going to do for me, except, look prettier while also potentially making the phone harder to hold without involuntary input? I also don't mind the notch and don't really see the point of the dynamic island, especially since you can't tell it to not call attention to itself all the time.

I wish they would bring back the mini. I have an iPhone 13 mini and the thing is perfect. It stops me from getting a new phone because that size isn’t offered anymore.
Smaller phones dont sell though. Shrinking bezel size, increases the screen while keeping the same overall size in the hand though.

A lot of people do things only on their phone these days too. So in a way makes sense people just want the biggest screen they can to watch content, read, sign documents, write emails. Is it crazy, yea give me a laptop at least, but I know people that do everything on their phone.

Instead of discontinuing the mini, Apple could have kept it available but separated it from the yearly iPhone update. Update it when there’s significant progress on battery tech. Apple is big enough of a company to have one model to cater to the minority who want small one hand phone.

I wouldn’t put mini as an SE. SE should be a budget option that works for most people, and most people want at least a 6 inch screen. Mini is a niche model for a minority, and that minority wants a premium compact phone that only small in size but big on other features. And in tech, it often actually costs more to make a compact product. Small doesn’t mean cheap.
I still think it’s possible Apple is planning a return of the mini with exactly this kind of long term strategy. Something that sits between the iPhone SE And yearly iPhone updates at a price that’s comparable to the standard phones but with the cadence of an SE And as it won’t have those yearly update flagship specs. And might trade away some of the nice things like a second camera. Then it would make sense to kill the 12/13mini for a bit so when they do relaunch the mini it isn’t compared so directly to those and can be evaluated as its own thing
At this point it’s like pushing beyond 120Hz.
Create a mini, improve battery life on smaller phones, stop making the Max just a blown up Pro and instead make the resolution larger for people who want to utilise all the wasted space. Instead the iPhone 15s main selling point was Titanium like anyone actually notices or gives a crap about that. Now we're getting a minuscule improvement on the screen which is likely going to encourage involuntary inputs and more durability issues. No wonder people are still rocking iPhones Xs/11s. There really is little to no change anymore.
Beyond a point I think the bezel reduction will have to stop. Because we have already moved on from curved screens, so for structural integrity there has to be some bezel.
For profit integrity, they gotta sell people Apple Care+.
It's already hard to hold an iphone to watch youtube because of the silly thin bezel. If you even touch a tiny amount of the corner, youtube goes into 2x playback mode. This is youtube's UI problem, but I still want to be able to hold my phone in a comfortable way.
I already suffer from the occasional accidental touch with my palm on the bottom right corner (right handed), so even smaller bezels actually sounds worse for me

They need to go back to releasing S models of their existing phone, because really iphones 12 to 15 have just been the same phone with slight improvement. And now add to it 16. It’s getting ridiculous and boring.

What im saying is that if its minor changes they should just release them as 15s or 15r or whatever like they did with iphone x, xr and xs and the ones before it. Since they stopped doing this there hasn’t been any significant changes between every years “new” phone release. It was all slight bezel changes and slight camera enhancements. The bar has been set low for whats worthy of a release and it suppressed their motivation to be creative. And it’s not just Apple other brand are guilty of this too. The hardware innovation has kind of died down with apple and they had to compensate with software features. They’ve even got rid of the silent button on 15pro that everyone liked. thats a hardware downgrade in return for a software upgrade! Same with the in your face pill dynamic island. If they for example re-added the touch ID, or changed the whole design, or made a foldable variant or massively improved the battery life, then thats worthy of a new phone release in my opinion.
Personally I prefer just releasing the numbers in order than having random s releases. For a time it made sense because it was a faster version of the same phone and the other release was a new design. We won’t get new designs every other year so why name them that way. Every phone is faster than the last so s doesn’t mean much. I don’t think they have pressure to release more because of a name
I just hope this doesn’t come at the cost of durability. I think the majority of people given the choice between 1 or 1.5mm of bezel or extra drop protection would pick the latter.
People have been saying they want a bit more size for more battery or gripping surface or whatever. Apple keeps giving us slimmer, thinner devices. I don’t think what the people want is much on Apple’s collective mind.

Well I remember Jobs once saying if you try to give the people what they want, you’ll go broke. But then again, Apple gave back the MacBook’s ports and MagSafe charging port. They’re no longer using the butterfly keypads. They ditched the touchbar. So at some point, they do listen I guess, if they figure not listening will cost them more than listening and modifying.

I think the only iPhones where the bezel has been genuinely noticeable is the XR and 11. Not that this isn't a good thing, but I don't think I've ever looked at my X and thought that I wish it had less bezel, especially with the case eating a solid half-mill

Please rework or remove the Dynamic Island. I hate that the DI takes soo much usable screen space by making the status bar larger when other phone manufacturers are maximizing screen space.
Tech isn’t there yet and the DI makes the dead screen space actually functional.

I went to the 15 to get USB-C but then they made the screen micro-curved again which makes putting on a screen protector look like shit with the black borders. Can’t they just make it a flat glass screen? Most people put on a case and never feel the screen edge. It’s always one step forward two steps back.
My screen protector works great. Hasn’t budged in 6 months.
Mine hasn’t budged. It’s more like the precision of the black border vs the screen protector glass and placing it in JUST the right spot which is annoying because if it’s a hair off it looks weird from all angles.
I'm looking at this on my pixel 8 and didn't even realise phones still have bezels... I mean if mine does I can't say I can even really see it and/or care...
They should use LIPO, or low-injection pressure over-molding, to inject more LiPo, or lithium polymer, for bigger batteries into the phone for our wallets to get lipo, or liposuction.
My 15 pro max is so good I’m not sure what would get me to upgrade to a 16 pro max. Honestly I might even just wait a few months after release when you can find great deals on FB marketplace.

I find use out of the thing. I’d actually want it to be *more* incorporated into daily use. Right now it’s an easy-to-use taskbar, especially when driving.

might be an unpopular opinion but i don’t want my phone being super light weight. i want it to feel just a bit heavy so im holding something. i have the 15 pro max and it was super light before i put the otter box on.
