I hope it will use an A17 chip, which can décodé AV1 codec (and latest Infuse release is compatible).

Original_Tax_5040

Es-tu du Grand-Est?!

chickentataki99

My guess is they add AV1 and improve the bitrate of streaming. With Apple going for lossless audio I feel like they are slowly inching closer and closer to lossless video.

Inevitable-Fix-1129

That will never ever ever happen. Do you have any idea how big a lossless 4K video file would be? A 2 hour 4K movie using lossless compression would be about 1TB.

chickentataki99

I’m not saying they’re going to flip and a switch and go bit for bit, but with AV1 they can almost 2x the quality with the current streaming bitrate. The ultra rich use a service called kaleidoscope, if Apple could tap into that market and have it available as a premium option it would be a no brainer.

Sofa47

That’s sort of crazy that Apple hasn’t done this given they are a premium brand and already have the infrastructure to distribute movies. It’s be like an Apple TV Pro or something.

Pls-No-Bully

That’s software decoding, not hardware decoding

moschtert

Ok but if current hardware is already good enough for software decoding why do we need anything else?

oneMadRssn

Why? So few services use AV1, it seems hardware AV1 decoders are a waste of die space.

DigiQuip

When Apple removed the headphone jack we didn’t have a lot of options for wireless headphones. Two years later wireless headphones became the preference.

1-760-706-7425

Chicken: meet egg.

EHphonehome

You’re forgetting the most important service of all, a personal NAS. AV1 encoding could save a lot of storage space.

oneMadRssn

Storage is cheap, and it wouldn't save that much. I also strongly disagree that a person NAS is the most important service of all. HEVC has wider support. On the high seas, I practically never bump into an AV1 file. And online, H.264/5/6 have taken the lead in terms of adoption. Mainly, I think AV1 is a ticking time bomb for hardware companies: AV1 is not royalty-free, as its proponents often say. See for example Sisvel. And since much of those IP creators did not participate in the creation of AV1, their IP is not bound by FRAND terms. Google is lying to people about AV1, and this can be seen in two ways. First, if Google truly believed AV1 was royalty-free, an indemnity would cost $0. But Google refuses to indemnifying implementers, which suggests Google knows there are lingering legal problems with AV1. Second, Google itself recently took a license to MPEG-LA, indicating that even Google internally doesn't believe it's own BS about AV1.

Diastolic

I was looking to upgrade from my 1st gen 4K, but I’m in no rush so may as well see how this plays out.

codykonior

Once you got the initial 4K years ago there’s no reason to buy any of the later ones. Nothing changes.

Diastolic

Well for some reason my HDMI-CEC stopped working after the most recent update and I have found the old glass remote a bit shit to use. Plus I can put the spare on in another room.

symlink

Unplug or cycle the power strip on the TV, Receiver and ATV. Make sure they are all without power at the same time. Then back on. This resets the HDMI CEC, which can be finicky. If it continues to come and go, make sure you are using a 2.1 HDMI cable. [This one](https://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Ultra-High-Speed-Cable/dp/B097PGJNWT/) is recommended by Apple and solves many issues.

Diastolic

I have tried that again just now, left it off for about 25 mins and no dice. It’s been working fine for a good few years so I don’t think it’s the HDMI, but for good measure I used another HDMI 2.1 cable I use for my ps5 and that’s the same. Though a few people on the apple support seem to have had the same issue recently. I even reset the Apple TV box and the to with no joy. All a little strange. This all kicked off when the box auto updated to the latest TVOS.

NewDividend

symlink is correct, you need your tv to completely lose power from its capacistors as its phase as gotten screwed up. Unplug your tv directly in the back, push the power button on it (to try to flush its capacistors where any residual energy is stored). Wait 15 seconds. Plug it back in, turn off and turn back on CEC and it should now work.

Diastolic

I have already tried that method unfortunately. I don’t think it’s the TV as the CEC connection for my PlayStation works totally fine, and I’m able to scroll menus with my tv remote like I have always done. I have even put the Apple TV into the ps5 port on the tv and still no dice. For me this limits the issue with the Apple TV and not the TV itself.

stevenpfrench

My CEC also stopped working. Messed with settings and couldn’t figure it out. I eventually discovered that the remote was constantly sending a volume down signal that seemed to be overriding any other button presses. Reset the remote and everything works fine again.

scaredywookie

Still broken for AppleTV 4k gen 1, since update to 17.4

stevenpfrench

my-sims-are-slobs

Yeah the metal remote is 100% superior to the glass. Glass remote is what happens when fashion is valued over function.. i had to put tape over the smashed glass on someone I know’s glass remote. And it’s too thin to pick up at times, may as well use the 2005 iPod dock remote instead

AdrianW3

Well, they did add HDR10+ last time. Which would be useful if your TV supports that (e.g. Samsung TVs).

justwatching301

Mine does and this is why I’m holding out on the newest release….I have a first gen 4k

Electronic-Trick2678

It won’t do hdr10+ just hdr10 and dv

AdrianW3

u/justwatching301 means his TV does HDR10+ and his first gen ATV4K doesn't. The upcoming ATV4K (and the previous one) *will* both do HDR10+.

Electronic-Trick2678

I see I took mine does as his tv does hdr10+

justwatching301

Thanks dude this was very helpful

Penguinboy123446

My TV supports hdr10 but I never use it. Unless it's Dolby vision I don't watch HDR. Normal HDR just looks wrong to me and would rather watch upscaled 1080p or DV

captain_finnegan

* Noticeably better WiFi for those who can’t run ethernet. * A better remote. * HDR10+ support for compatible TV’s. * HDMI 2.1 with Quick Media Switching support. * Dolby Vision support at 4K 60fps. * Better storage options and more RAM as standard. Savvy buyers have a few things to consider there.

Tree06

I couldn't agree. I used every iteration of the Apple TV 4K, and the third Gen is my favorite. The original Apple TV 4K doesn't support YouTube 4K60. The only reason I bought the latest Apple TV 4K is for HDR10+ support which my S95B and S95C supports. If I didn't have those TVs, I would've been content with my Apple TV 2nd Gen. I gave away my original Apple TV 4K because they still work.

SeaLonely3504

Not correct. The latest generation is compatible with additional sound and video codecs and will allow you to have improved picture and sound quality depending on your devices.

AnOoglyBoogly

My remote doesn’t respond or is slow to respond especially when changing the volume on my HomePods that are eArc’d. Sometimes the remote doesn’t turn on tv or turn it off despite HDMI-CEC “working”. The problem is deeper because if I turn on the tv, I can see the Apple TV Home Screen but not the remote doesn’t respond. It just stays frozen for almost 5 mins. I got a new remote to be sure but same result when using the remote app from my iPhone. I did a factory wipe but no joy…

0nly0bjective

Only reason I would by a 3rd gen or newer is support for Apple Music Sing. Game changer if you enjoy karaoke! For now I just use screen mirroring, but that obviously has its limitations.

Exavion

Been waiting to get a unit for our bedroom setup, so I'll probably move the 4k unit out of the living room and upgrade, if this one fixes the CEC BS. I route the HDMI-out to a Samsung Soundbar, then to the TV (for some reason the TV can't pass uncompressed 5.1 audio nicely to the system if I try through it) Everytime I turn the ATV on, the LG TV picks it up, then drops it thinking the TV has it's own signal, and i need to spam the Menu button on ATV to get it back on the Soundbars output signal.

Schminimal

Pass… through… audio… please

mattwaddy

This is the one thing that makes me continue to use the Nvidia Shield

UniqueEnigma121

Definitely a feature I need. Hence why I’m holding off buying one at the moment.

chickentataki99

They won’t do this until they add lossless video and audio streaming to their catalogs/Apple TV plus content… but I’m hoping that is coming.

buzzedewok

I thought it already supported pass through

DrJubalHarshaw

It doesn't pass through Atmos as-is

chunkychowder32

Has anyone actually got close to filling up the 128 gigs?

montyman77

Infuse player seems to when caching thumbnails and meta data on top of all my other apps taking space. I think it would help with caching of data so you're waiting less for apps to load

fyonn

If your data is served up by plex then the new infuse version makes better use of the plex connection and doesn’t need to cache as much

divergentnate

I have had much less issues since using the new direct library in Infuse

montyman77

I think I turned that on. Using jellyfin

montyman77

Jellyfin I forget why I even switched from plex initially

fyonn

The new infuse is also a front end for jellyfin and emby too

bfume

the client? or server too?

Rasmus_Larsen

Our 128GB version is close to full. We’re a big family with kids, so we have lots of games installed + Infuse metadata.

Res1362429

Where do you look to find out how much storage is used?

2b_squared

There isn’t really a place to see that absolute number, but you can see how much each app takes space.

coprax84

What are the chances it comes with better audio capabilities? I really want a pass-through for trueHD atmos but my current atv and also the newest one cannot do it.

AdrianW3

It should be at the top of the list - but it's highly unlikely knowing Apple.

CapcomGo

Why would they be against having it? Not super familiar with audio.

AdrianW3

One reason is that they can inject audio into the stream when interacting with Siri.

EEightyFive

This site says it already supports audio pass-through...LOL. >**Audio Passthrough**: Apple TV 4K can send audio in its raw form to home theater systems and soundbars, supporting a full spectrum of sound formats. That's the only "feature" I want out of this thing, so I can finally get rid of my Shield Pro.

shawnshine

Not TrueHD Atmos, unfortunately. And Plex / Jellyfin / Emby videos are stripped of their Atmos data and exported in Multichannel PCM surround.

shawnshine

EEightyFive

I know this...hence the LOL and desiring pass-through

Dick_Lazer

There were a ton of rumors last year that it would be releasing early 2024. I thought it'd be released by now so I'd take these rumors with a grain of salt.

TheRatPatrol1

How about true audio and video output, or whatever it is everyone complains about over on AVSForms. Would an M1 chip be beneficial in an Apple TV?

MAD_BOSSS

I think an M1 would only be beneficial if Apple got its head in the game for console-quality games on Apple TV. I could see an Apple TV Pro, with an M1 chip and extra ram, that is meant to run some heavier gaming titles that Apple could get ported from other consoles.

Electronic-Trick2678

I pray that one day we get the ability to use true Dolby Atmos and we get dts

Jaidon24

DTS is probably a stretch but it would be a game changer that would actually cut into Nvidia’s market share.

Electronic-Trick2678

Agreed, I know a few people who won’t get an Apple TV because of lack of truehd atmos and dts support. Also I hope this improves Plex performance I tire of having to flip flop between Plex and infuse.

ASimkins17

Most powerful streaming box - shame it cannot pass audio to an AVR.

Adalbdl

At least one usb-c port please.

roba121

I thought that they had a huge miss not having a port for a webcam and FaceTime. Seems so basic to let you run FaceTime right from the atv

Klhoe318

I just bought one two days ago 😭😭😭

Pee_Shivering1

Where did you buy it from?

Klhoe318

Target!

Pee_Shivering1

You have 13 days left to return lol. Just keep an eye out. I have one, and I’m pleased with it…probably would hold off on the next gen for a while.

Kazsud

The one in the article?

Blofse

I bought mine a week ago from Argos UK! So should be good for a return soon, when will they actually formally announce?

Arthaei

The latest gen is still very powerful, they may not come out with anything this year at all, it’s all just rumours. Some people point to a March release (that hasn’t happened) others a June announcement/release, the previous gen was announced in October and released on November so only Apple knows. I couldn’t wait so picked up the 128gb latest gen last month and it’s superb.

Blofse

I'm really enjoying it too, great little device

v1pzz

It’s a great streamer. But as long as it doesn’t support bitstreaming audio, I will still have to switch to something like a Shield TV for movie watching…

OmegaPoint6

Bitstream audio & DV Profile 7 support would make it perfect. Neither of which seem in any way likely

v1pzz

Well at least the next revision should actually support true bitstreaming from a HW perspective. Instead of just AC3 with metadata… So then it’s really a software thing. Which could be sorted with a jailbreak if Apple still wants to be an ass about it.

OmegaPoint6

Is it actually a hardware limitation? I assumed it was just tvOS not supporting it

Ecsta

Keep dreaming lol I've been requesting that since Infuse came out. Many others too.

Meep87

Yeah, I kind of hate having to go back to shield for this, but would gladly buy a new gen if bitatreaming audio was included

OcelotEnvironmental1

It would be awesome if they put a fan in it again so it doesn't thermal throttle the CPU/GPU when you play games for too long.

justwatching301

You actually game on this thing???

OcelotEnvironmental1

Not the 3rd gen. It starts overheating and throttling the CPU/GPU after any meaning amount of play with games that tax it. The 2nd gen is better at playing games overall, despite being a slower CPU/GPU.

justwatching301

I have a first gen. My niece and nephew are at the introductory age of gaming. I might have to let them game on this before they can put their crusty fingers on my Xbox and PC

RED-DOT-MAN

Planning on getting my first oled and will need another Apple TV. Let’s see what Apple dishes out this time around.

garylapointe

Obvious guesses more than rumors. Of course, it’s going to come with a newer processor! I’m not sure why it would be much more storage unless they’re going to give it more gaming capabilities, and if that’s the case, it’s probably going to have an even better processor.

Willylowman1

hope they fix Home Sharing ! so damn buggy

DannoMcK

The topic comes up pretty regularly, either with links to MacRumors or the few-times-weekly "Should I buy now or wait?" posts. [https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/apple-tv/#whats\_next\_for\_the\_apple\_tv](https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/apple-tv/#whats_next_for_the_apple_tv)

MoTown83

I see a lot of people talking about “true bit-stream” and/or “pass through audio”. For someone who’s more of a layman; would these additions provide a solution for the fact that different streaming apps require me to change the audio settings on my LG G2 tv in order to get Dolby Atmos on my Sonos Arc surround sound? Also, some apps like Disney plus will just randomly decide to stop playing audio out of nowhere. My assumption has always been that these problems were on account of my Apple TV and Sonos not liking each other.

cmay91472

Pass through audio will enable people to be able to play files ripped from 4K UHD discs in DolbyAtmos TrueHD instead of the files being down converted to uncompressed PCM. Pass through won’t have any effect on Apple’s current DolbyAtmos that is compressed.

MoTown83

Thanks. I think my real question is: will it make my shit work like it’s supposed to?

MoTown83

Clarification: by “Shit” I mean my $6,000 entertainment center setup that is accompanied by $300/month in fees and NEVER works correctly.

cmay91472

Unfortunately no. Pass through will have no bearing on how anything operates other than allowing ripped files to play DolbyAtmos TrueHD… but for users with large libraries of ripped files this addition is huge. For those that stream through subscriptions it won’t add anything new or improve a systems performance.

jimrasch

All I want is High Res audio out

dlweninger

Hell yah!

Cliper11298

I am glad I saw this post because I was thinking of getting the gen 3 ATV4K but I am happy to wait if there is a new one coming around the corner

Fionn_MacCuill

Classic I just bought an Apple TV 😅

Infamous_Bee_7445

If it doesn’t pass though audio via HDMI I’m moving on, and you should too. It is pure greed and literally nothing else.

MechaZain

The only thing I’d add is maybe a built in camera/mic for FaceTime. Never had any problems with the 4k outside of specific app issues.

ZOMBiEZ4PREZ

Or even an output for a webcam would be so sick, I’d love to FaceTime with my LDF on my TV, could do it for hours

luchod

You can use iPhones as webcams on Facetime.

ZOMBiEZ4PREZ

Yeah I know but the angles all funky.

metalandmeeples

Not that helpful if the Apple TV is your only Apple device.

shawnshine

Built-in would be nice, but it works fabulously with Continuity Camera.

rambo1286

120hz?!!!!

furin_kazanski

I will buy it if they add a USB port for me to abuse it for a jailbreak.

NotAsSmartAsKirby

Make me not need my shield pro. Please.

diablette

As someone just beginning to compare options, why? Do you think Nvidia is going to exit this market? I’m tired of buying stuff and then having the company abandon it (Fire TV Recast). That’s not likely with Apple.

NotAsSmartAsKirby

I just mean the shield pro does a LOT more with your media content, way more compatibility. I’d love for its capabilities to be in the ATV and me only need one device.

diablette

Ok thanks! I’ll probably give it a couple more months to see how it all shakes out, but the Shield is looking nice.

Tums425

Definitely looking forward and in the market for an Apple TV. I'm using another streaming device at the moment, which still works okay after a couple, but I think I might give it to my parents as their device is a bit slower. Anyways can definitely wait until June or whenever this comes out. From what I've seen and read most people seem to enjoy their Apple TV's. Hopefully we hear more about this soon.

steveo82

Just give me audio pass through please

[deleted]

120hz support please

[deleted]

I have these in the den library office kitchen and all 4 bedrooms. I would love to see Apple develop its own TV/Monitor with the iOS built in.

AXXXXXXXXA

Backlight redesigned remote please god please god With blank keys for customizable Shortcuts.

xxirish83x

Would also really like one with an input button.

ericjuh

Only reason to not upgrade to an Apple TV is because of Kodi. I know you can sideload, but jailbreaking a device isn’t what I wanted to do in 2024.

Saisinko

In the market for my first Apple TV, but such an awkward timeframe right now. I’ll probably just buy the existing one from Costco and return/swap with latest if it comes soon.

cerebud

The article above is just speculation, and even if any of it is true, you’re totally fine for years to come with the existing ATV. Nobody needs 8K. The current processor is plenty fast (and still way faster than competitors). Just get the current one, it’s great.

Blog_Pope

Honest the processor in my ATV HD is still doing fine. I’ll likely upgrade when the TV finally goes, not when the ATV can’t handle it

Ecsta

Also they hold their value decently well you can sell it used and get back a good chunk of what you spent, or keep it in good condition and its a great present.

leo-g

Yes but but he won’t get the “full” software lifespan of a new Apple TV. He may be shortchanged of 1 year of latest software.

cerebud

Doubtful. Vast majority of people just use it for streaming, and all the streaming services plan to support the current configuration for a long, long time. I wouldn’t doubt if the old school Apple TVs can still stream certain apps. We’re talking almost a decade down the line.

natemac

These aren’t rumors these are guesses, rumors are credited towards someone, e.g. Mark Gurman or Ming Chi Kuo, a source as Apple says…

justwatching301

YES I KNEWWW IT ![gif](giphy|2RGhmKXcl0ViM) I have been waiting, I have a first gen that keeps lagging. This is great news, I hope it’s legit.

Jenings

Probably an input on your tv. I have a frame too and I don’t think Apple TV does anything with motion smoothing.

BBDBVAPA

Yeah, this is the right answer. Confused me a lot when I got my new TV a few years ago. Each HDMI input on your new TV will have default settings. So you'll have to turn it off on each one. You can actually change the video quality on the Apple TV though. But your TV settings will override that if you want.

markhewitt1978

Quite often those settings are on a per input basis. Which is entirely reasonable as you may want to have different settings per input.
